summary Our ability to delegate the most intellectually demanding tasks to machines improves with each passing day. Even in the fields of architecture and design, which were previously thought to be exclusive domain of human creativity and flare, we are moving the first steps towards developing models that can capture the patterns, invisible to the naked eye, embedded in the creative process. These patterns reflect ideas and traditions, imprinted in the collective mind over the course of history, that can be improved upon or serve as a cautionary tale for the new generation of designers in their work of designing an equitable, more inclusive future. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) give us the opportunity to turn style and design into learnable features that can be used to automatically generate blueprints and layouts. In this study, we attempt to apply this technology to urban design and to the task of generating a building footprint and volume that fits within the surrounding built environment. We do so by developing a Pix2Pix model composed of a ResNet-6 generator and a Patch discriminator, applying it to satellite views of neighborhoods from across the Netherlands, and then turning the resulting 2D generated building footprint into a reusable 3D model. The model is trained using the national cadastral data and TU Delft 3D BAG dataset. The results show that it is possible to predict a building shape compatible in style and height with the surroundings. Although the model can be used for different applications, we use it as an evaluation tool to compare the design alternatives fitting the desired contextual patterns.

summary The use of artificial intelligence (AI) engines in the design disciplines is a nascent field of research, which became very popular over the last decade. In particular, deep learning (DL) and related generative adversarial networks (GANs) proved to be very promising. While there are many research projects exploring AI in architecture and urban planning, e.g., in order to generate optimal floor layouts, massing models, evaluate image quality, etc., there are not many research projects in the area of landscape architecture - in particular the design of two-dimensional garden layouts. In this paper, we present our work using GANs to generate optimal front- and backyard layouts. We are exploring various GAN engines, e.g., DCGAN, that have been successfully used in other design disciplines. We used supervised and unsupervised learning utilizing a massive dataset of about 100,000 images of front- and backyard layouts, with qualitative and quantitative attributes, e.g., idea and beauty scores, as well as functional and structural evaluation scores. We present the results of our work, i.e., the generation of garden layouts, and their evaluation, and speculate on how this approach may help landscape architects in developing their designs. The outcome of the study may also be relevant to other design disciplines.

title D-ART for collaboration in evaluating design alternatives

summary Evaluating design ideas is an integral part of designing built environments. It involves multiple stakeholders with diverse backgrounds reviewing design solutions by studying their form and performance data. Although there are computational systems for supporting evaluation tasks, they are either highly specialised for designers or configured for a particular workflow with limited functions. We developed a Design Analytics method aiming at a collaborative and data-driven evaluation of alternatives in the design-evaluate-feedback cycle. Adopting this approach, we introduce D-ART as a prototype system composed of customisable Web interfaces for presenting design alternatives, enabling stakeholders to participate in data-informed discourse on alternatives and providing feedback to the design team. Its system design considers requirements gathered through literature review, critical analysis of the existing systems and collaboration with our industry partners. Finally, we assessed D-ART’s design through an expert review evaluation, which generally reported positive results on the system’s goals.

summary District-scale energy demand models can be powerful tools for understanding interactions in complex urban areas and optimising energy systems in new developments. The process of coupling characteristics of urban environments with simulation software to achieve accurate results is nascent. We developed a digital twin through a web map application for a 170ha district-scale university campus as a pilot. The impact on the built environment is simulated with pandemic (COVID-19) and climate change scenarios. The former can be observed through varying occupancy rates and average cooling loads in the buildings during the lockdown period. The digital twin dashboard was built with visualisations of the 3D campus, real-time data from sensors, energy demand simulation results from the City Energy Analyst (CEA) tool, and occupancy rates from WiFi data. The ongoing work focuses on formulating a resilience assessment metric to measure the robustness of buildings to these disruptions. This district-scale digital twin demonstration can help in facilities management and planning applications. The results show that the digital twin approach can support decarbonising initiatives for cities.

summary Data-driven urban design processes consist of iterative actions of many stakeholders, which require digital participatory approaches for collecting data from a high number of participants to make informed decisions. It is important to evaluate such processes to justify the necessary costs and efforts while continuously improving digital participation. Nevertheless, such evaluation remains a challenge due to the involvement of different stakeholders including participants, designers, and policymakers in decision-making processes, and the lack of a systematic method to generalize participation outputs that are mostly situated and context based. By addressing this challenge, this paper introduces a Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) based framework to measure the effectiveness and quality of digital participation systematically and quantitatively. To achieve such evaluation, we conducted a digital participation experiment and investigated such processes with the help of participants, designers, and policymakers from Singapore and Hamburg. By formulating this framework, we aim to reveal perspectives of different stakeholders towards digital participation and enable the evaluation and comparison of digital participation processes based on the introduced digital participation criteria.

summary The new construction that is projected to take place between 2020 and 2040 plays a critical role in embodied carbon emissions. The change in material selection is inversely proportional to the budget as the project progresses. Given the fact that early-stage design processes often do not include environmental performance metrics, there is an opportunity to investigate a toolset that enables early-stage design processes to integrate this type of analysis into the preferred workflow of concept designers. The value here is that early-stage environmental feedback can inform the crucial decisions that are made in the beginning, giving a greater chance for a building with better environmental performance in terms of its life cycle. This paper presents the development of a tool called LearnCarbon, as a plugin of Rhino3d, used to educate architects and engineers in the early stages about the environmental impact of their design. It facilitates two neural networks trained with the Embodied Carbon Benchmark Study by Carbon Leadership Forum, which learns the relationship between building geometry, typology, and construction type with the Global Warming potential (GWP) in tons of C02 equivalent (tCO2e). The first one, a regression model, can predict the GWP based on the massing model of a building, along with information about typology and location. The second one, a classification model, predicts the construction type given a massing model and target GWP. LearnCarbon can help improve the building life cycle impact significantly through early predictions of the structure’s material and can be used as a tool for facilitating sustainable discussions between the architect and the client.

summary Digital design processes are increasingly being explored through the use of 2D generative adversarial networks (GAN), due to their capability for assembling latent spaces from existing data. These infinite spaces of synthetic data have the potential to enhance architectural design processes by mapping adjacencies across multidimensional properties, giving new impulses for design. The paper outlines a teaching method that applies 2D GANs to explore spatial characteristics with architectural students based on a training data set of 3D models of material-labelled houses. To introduce a common interface between human and neural networks, the method uses vertical slices through the models as the primary medium for communication. The approach is tested in the framework of a design course.

summary This paper describes the proposal and results of a multilingual shape grammar to describe the designs of three architects, precursors of the ‘International Style’. A shape grammar is a generative process that allows the recreation of designs that follow a language. Grammars are useful mechanisms to describe patterns and generative processes that can be used for analysis or design exploration. Most grammars represent one language. This study focuses on three independent languages within the same movement. The proposed grammar is parametric and allows the independent recreation of each independent design. Its difficult application can be linked to the difficult evaluation process. This research proposes a quantitative and a qualitative method of grammar evaluation, using respectively Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and user questionnaires. The results are then discussed and assessed using hybrids that fall in between languages and help delineate parametric spaces.

summary This study presents generative adversarial networks (GANs), a machine-learning technique that can be used as an urban design tool capable of learning and reproducing complex patterns that express the unique spatial qualities of non-planned settlements. We report preliminary experimental results of training and testing GAN models on different datasets of urban patterns. The results reveal that machine learning models can generate development alternatives with high morphological resemblance to the original urban fabric based on the suggested training process. This study contributes a methodological framework that has the potential to generate development alternatives sensitive to the local practices, thereby promoting preservation of traditional knowledge and cultural sustainability.

summary This project examines how interconnected artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted workflows can address the limitations of current language-based models and streamline machine-vision related tasks for architectural design. A precise relationship between text and visual feature representation is problematic and can lead to "ambiguity‚ in the interpretation of the morphological/tectonic complexity of a building. Textual representation of a design concept only addresses spatial complexity in a reductionist way, since the outcome of the design process is co-dependent on multiple interrelated systems, according to systems theory (Alexander 1968). We propose herewith a process of feature disentanglement (using low level features, i.e., composition) within an interconnected generative adversarial networks (GANs) workflow. The insertion of natural language models within the proposed workflow can help mitigate the semantic distance between different domains and guide the encoding of semantic information throughout a domain transfer process.

Despite the promisingpotentials, the utilization of AI, particularly reinforced learning (RL), to support multidisciplinary designendeavours in the AEC industry is still in its infancy. summary Studies have shown that walkable communities reduce traffic-related pollution and the risk of chronic illnesses, promote economic growth and prosperity, and stimulate community participation and the growth of social capital. To assess the walkability of urban areas, various methodologies have been developed around shortest-distance calculations between various points of interest (POIs), yet their outcomes do not guide potential urban design improvements. The absence of appropriate measurements and procedures that may give quantitative and actionable feedback to support design decision-making is one of the primary issues in building walkable neighborhoods. The work presented in this paper revolves around a new workflow, that employed Urbano, a mobility simulation and assessment tool, and integrated it within a generative design process to allowing for the quantitative evaluation on amenity accessibility for several alternative design scenarios for a case study site in Mong Kok, Hong Kong. The results show how this data-driven urban design process benefits from generative techniques to produce solutions with improved contextual connectivity, energy-efficient urban form, and good quality public spaces that contribute to the walkability of neighbourhoods.

summary The space layout problem encompasses challenges that rely on a diverse range of contexts regarding urban planning and architectural design, during the traditional design phases which require immense effort and time for the evaluation of the spatial elements’ characteristic needs. In order to eliminate the burden of considering all multidimensional design aspects at the same time, this research presents a three-bodied computational method for locating the spaces of the given architectural design program in a project site, according to the defined list of design objectives and criteria. Besides the determination of the layout according to the requirements of the spatial elements, this research proposes an integration of the space syntax theory’s analytical compounds in terms of Justified Graph Analysis and Integration Values as the fitness criteria for the multi-objective evolutionary optimization in the computational model. To satisfy the integrity levels of each various characterized element within site organization, that are implied inherently by the architectural design program and generate a sustainable space network layout for the project site

summary Artificial Intelligence is a field that is able to learn from existing data to synthesize new ones using deep learning methods. Using Artificial Neural Networks that process big datasets, complex tasks and challenges become easily resolved. As the zeitgeist suggests, it is possible to produce novel outcomes for future projections by applying various machine learning algorithms on the generated data sets. In that context, the focus of this research is exploring the reinterpretation of 21st century urban plans with familiar artist styles using different subtypes of deep-learning-based generative adversarial networks (GAN) algorithms. In order to explore the capabilities of urban map transformation with machine learning approaches, two different GAN algorithms which are cycleGAN and styleGAN have been applied on the two main data sets. First data set, the urban data set, contains 50 cities urban plans in .jpeg format collected according to the diversity of the urban morphologies. Whereas the second data set is composed of four well-known artist’s paintings, that belong to various artistic movements. As a result of training the same data sets with different GAN algorithms and epoch values were compared and evaluated. In this respect, the study not only investigates the reinterpretation of stylistic urban maps and shows the discoverability of new representation techniques, but also offers a comparison of the use of different image to image translation GAN algorithms.

summary The present study, Nanotectonica SEM-GAN, focuses on two processes for image production, one based in the field of nanotechnology and the other in machine learning: Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN). It establishes commonalities of these routines as they pertain to aesthetics and design methodology, and it explores methods of spatializing and materializing images produced in their interaction. The study of transposing rich image material to three-dimensional geometry and material artifact is considered relevant not only to the particular study at hand, but also to the general problem of image-based machine learning techniques when applied in the spatial design disciplines. A third process, Robotic Incremental Metal Forming (RIMF), advances the aesthetic language of SEM-GAN through the sculptural method of the relief.

summary This paper presents an application of parametric techniques and tools to assess urban compactness in the city of Juiz de Fora, Brazil. A literature review identifies the objective metrics' role in urban design and how they are associated with the urban compactness paradigm. The case study provided results that characterize aspects of the built urban density and the mix of uses in the samples, exploring how parametric resources can help urban design. This research shed some light on how metrics can assist parametric urban design allowing performance measurement in the early design stages. It also highlights potentials, future studies, and challenges, establishing discussions about developing this field of knowledge in Brazil and even in Latin America.

summary The development of machine learning technology gives architects and urban planners a new tool that can be used for research and design. The topic of this paper is to analyze the rural space of Jilin Province with the machine learning algorithms and space syntax theory, and to obtain the inherent formation and development laws of rural spatial forms, which can be used as a reference and evaluation system for subsequent rural development, and also can emphasize the locality and continuity of rural development. First, based on geographic information data, researching the connection between the distribution of villages and geographic data at a macro level and to classify them. Then, from each category, selecting one township and use all villages in its area as samples for the more specific study. Spatial features of individual village are extracted based on space syntax theory, and representative spatial features which can as feature values for cluster analysis are selected through comparative analysis. Then classify villages from high-dimensional data and explore their type characteristics. Finally, we hope the result of this study can help provide useful theoretical references for rural construction and nature conservation in the future.

summary Romance awakens fond memories of the city. Finding out the relationship between romantic scene and urban morphology, and providing a prediction, can potentially facilitate the better urban design and urban life. Taking the Yangtze River Delta region of China as an example, this study aims to predict the distribution of romantic locations using deep learning based on multi-source data. Specifically, we use web crawlers to extract romance-related messages and geographic locations from social media platforms, and visualize them as romance heatmap. The urban environment and building features associated with romantic information are identified by Pearson correlation analysis and annotated in the city map. Then, both city labelled maps and romance heatmaps are fed into a Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) as the training dataset to achieve final romance distribution predictions across regions for other cities. The ideal prediction results highlight the ability of deep learning techniques to quantify experience-based decision-making strategies that can be used in further research on urban design.

summary Our cities are facing different kinds of challenges - in parallel to the urban transformation and densification, climate targets and objectives of decision-makers are on the daily agenda of planning. Therefore, the planning of new neighbourhoods and buildings in high-density areas is complex in many ways. It requires intelligent processes that automate specific aspects of planning and thus enable impact-oriented planning in the early phases. The impacts on environment, economy and society have to be considered for a sustainable planning result in order to make responsible decisions. The objective of this paper is to explore pathways towards a framework for the environmental performance assessment and the optimisation of high-rise buildings with a particular focus on processing large amounts of data in order to derive actionable insights. A development area in the urban centre of Vienna serves as case study to exemplify the potential of automated model generation and applying ML algorithm to accelerate simulation time and extend the design space of possible solutions. As a result, the generated designs are screened on the basis of their performance using a Design Space Exploration approach. The potential for optimisation is evaluated in terms of their environmental impact on the immediate environment.

summary This paper presents an approach for AI-based autocompletion of graph-based spatial configurations using deep learning in the form of link prediction through graph neural networks. The main goal of the research presented is to estimate the probability of connections between the rooms of the spatial configuration graph at hand using the available semantic information. In the context of early design stages, deep learning-based prediction of spatial connections helps to make the design process more efficient and sustainable using the past experiences collected in a training dataset. Using the techniques of transfer learning, we adapted methods available in the modern graph-based deep learning frameworks in order to apply them for our autocompletion purposes to suggest possible further design steps. The results of training, testing, and evaluation showed very good results and justified application of these methods.
