title Immersive Technologies in Architectural Education: A pedagogical framework for integrating virtual reality as the main design tool in a fully virtualised architectural design studio environment

summary Given the increased accessibility and utilization of VR tools in architectural education, embracing a fully virtualised design process still remains taboo. The recent covid-19 pandemic has forced universities to fully adopt remote learning/teaching systems that showcased a disconnection between direct interaction, communication design methods and tools. Immersive tools like VR could play a unique role in closing that gap, allowing users to collaborate and design using avatars in the online virtual space. With this paper, we aim to examine the possibility of a fully virtualised, architectural design studio framework and explore its outcomes throughout the design process. It incorporates multiple digital 3D exercises deriving from manually-driven techniques including sketching and collage-making. We then test the framework for one semester within the Immersive Design and Collaboration Design Studio Unit, which runs in parallel to non- virtualised studio units, working on the same site and context. Our findings highlight the strengths and challenges of the implemented framework and its evaluation through student surveys and student portfolio submissions, to compare the student output developed in both the virtualised and non-virtualised design studio.

summary This project explores the advantages of employing continuum material topology optimization in a 3D non-standard lattice structure through fiber additive manufacturing processes (Figure 1). Additive manufacturing (AM) has gained rapid adoption in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC). However, existing optimization techniques often overlook the mechanical anisotropy of AM processes, resulting in suboptimal structural properties, with a focus on layer-by-layer or planar processes. Materials, processes, and techniques considering anisotropy behavior (Kwon et al. 2018) could enhance structural performance (Xie 2022). Research on 3D printing materials with high anisotropy is limited (Eichenhofer et al. 2017), but it holds potential benefits (Liu et al. 2018). Spatial lattices, such as space frames, maximize structural efficiency by enhancing flexural rigidity and load-bearing capacity using minimal material (Woods et al. 2016). From a structural design perspective, specific non-standard lattice geometries offer great potential for reducing material usage, leading to lightweight load-bearing structures (Shelton 2017). The flexibility and freedom of shape inherent to AM offers the possibility to create aggregated continuous truss-like elements with custom topologies.

summary Over the past several decades, the conception and construction of formal complexity has disregarded the realities of material waste, costs, and accessibility. By engaging the isometric relationship between flatness and three-dimensional form, the research shown here investigates how waste-conscious approaches to geometric innovation can create new architectural languages. Specifically, the work deploys a subset of curved-crease folding that uses planar reflections referred to as sectional mirror operations to create unique forms comprised of composite cylindrical and conical surfaces (Figure 1). Whereas known studies in curved-crease folding typically explore singular (one-off, figural) compositions (Davis et al. 2013), this process develops a module aggregation strategy to suggest large inhabitable structures as both figural and field-like conditions.

Wildfires, drought, and extreme temperatures are occurring throughout the world, and are projected to get worse. These environmental changes affect all species on this planet. Due to the overwhelming, depressing, and complex subject matter that is climate change, people can feel apathetic or tune out when it is being discussed, in addition to having feelings of hopelessness surrounding the future. These feelings are categorized as eco-anxiety (Ágoston et al. 2022, 1-3).

summary Two thousand bricks, made from locally recycled materials, are manually assembled into a meandering vault in the garden of the Palazzo Mora in Venice, Italy. The project merges the new and the old, both in a physical and metaphysical sense. It is the first attempt to leverage self-balancing masonry patterns and Augmented Reality (AR) for the construction of a form-found vault on minimal centering, creating an active relationship between the timelessness of an ancient material and the accelerating speed of our technological present.

summary The intent of this research is to study potential improvements and optimizations in the context of robotic fabrication paired with Augmented Reality (AR), leveraging the technology in the fabrication of the individual part, as well as guiding the larger assembly process. AR applications within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry have seen constant research and development as designers, fabricators, and contractors seek methods to reduce errors, minimize waste, and optimize efficiency to lower costs (Chi, Kang, and Wang 2013). Recent advancements have made the technology very accessible and feasible for use in the field, as demonstrated by seminal projects such as the Steampunk Pavilion in Tallinn, Estonia (Jahn, Newnham, and Berg 2022). These types of projects typically improve manual craft processes. They often provide projective guidelines, and make possible complex geometries that would otherwise be painstakingly slow to complete and require decades of artisanal experience (Jahn et al. 2019). Building upon a previously developed robotic tube bending workflow, our research implements a custom AR interface to streamline the bending process for multiple, large, complex parts with many bends, providing a pre-visualization of the expected fabrication process for safety and part-verification purposes. We demonstrate the utility of this AR overlay in the part fabrication setting and in an inadvertent, human-robot, collaborative process when parts push the fabrication method past its limits. The AR technology is also used to facilitate the assembly process of a spatial installation exploring a unique aesthetic with subtle bends, loops, knots, bundles, and weaves utilizing a rigid tube material.

title Task and Motion Planning for Robotic Assembly

summary When programming robotic assembly processes, it is often necessary to create a sequential list of actions. Some actions are robotic motions (requiring motion trajectory), and some are for controlling external equipment, such as grippers and fastening tools. The act of planning these actions and motion trajectories is called Task Planning and Motion Planning. Existing literature in robotics explored many different planning algorithms for planning a single trajectory to planning a complete sequence of tasks where continuity is maintained [Garrett et al, 2021]. Many application literature focused on the TAMP for service robots, medical robots, and self-driving cars, while there are few examples for architectural applications. For digital fabrication and automated construction, the planning method has to be adapted to the needs of architectural assemblies and the scale of construction [Leung et al, 2021]. Some of the unique challenges are the highly bespoke workpiece and assembly geometry, the large workpiece (e.g., long beams), and a dense collision environment. This three-day hybrid workshop addressed the needs of the architectural robotics community to use industrial robotic arms to assemble highly bespoke objects. The objects do not have any repetitive parts or assembly targets. The workshop leaders shared their experiences using industrial robots to construct large-scale timber structures. One of the most useful techniques is the recently published “Flowchart Planning Method,” where task sequence is planned using a flowchart, and motion trajectories are planned in a second pass [Huang et al, 2021].

summary The material balance of the Earth is being challenged. The year 2020 was marked as the year when the total weight of human-made materials globally surpassed the weight of all life on Earth, while it is estimated that in the years to come the growth rate of mass added to the anthroposphere will increase exponentially (Elhacham et al., 2020). In this context of hypergrowth coupled with the climate emergency, the growing rate of urbanization and the increasing social and political awareness on the matters of the Anthropocene, the topics of resource depletion or insufficiency are being reframed. This keynote lecture at ACADIA 2023 highlights the importance of redefining resources and is introducing a new cultural, design and construction paradigm. Operating from an abundance mindset rather than from scarcity (Gausa et al., 2020) presents a new paradigm, particularly relevant in the design and production of the built environment. This approach expands the definition of resources, encompassing raw, non-raw, renewable, and recyclable materials. Shifting attention to the Anthroposphere as a source rather than just a destination for processed goods has the potential to disrupt linear design patterns and enhance circularity in cities and the built environment.

summary This paper explores the potential of material, computation, and fabrication methodologies broadly engaging a critical understanding of the human epoch, also known as the anthro- pocene era, and its impact on Earth’s geology. Man-made materials have arguably become ubiquitous and a massively distributed part of the environment, while also placing an involuntary burden on local ecologies. Nature has taken its course and swallowed these synthetic materials to create new compositions of complex conglomerations, thereby blur- ring the boundaries between the agency of man, nature, and technology (Corcoran et al. 2014). The discipline of architecture, too, must reconsider its own boundaries, and evolve to design and fabricate with these techno relics, defined here as a remnant of the techno- logical impact on our planet. In order to understand how these techno relics can be used by designers, this paper pres- ents a general framework for the research, discovery, and validation of computational and fabrication processes. This is done through the examination of the background research in using aluminum waste by leveraging pre-existing digital and physical processes. Furthermore, the paper situates the background work within the broader context of how these techno relics can be mined, or collected. This is done through the examination of a case study that follows plastic waste in the Pacific Northwest through an Indigenous lens, providing possible architectural solutions that are relevant to the building typology in the remote communities most affected.

summary This research project, conducted at the University of Montreal School of Architecture, presents an innovative approach to the construction of reticulated structures, focusing on the development and application of a novel, ultralight aluminum node. The node, constructed from a folded, laser-cut, 1-mm aluminum sheet, is designed to accommodate wooden linear members with varied rectangular sections, making it adaptable to bespoke geometries and low valence nodes. This innovative design offers a solution to the long-standing challenge in the construction industry of balancing cost, customization, and weight for reticulated structures through novel node designs (Abdelwahab and Tsavdaridis 2019; Dyvik et al. 2023; Chilton 2007; Rochas 2014; Hassani et al. 2020).

summary Previous research projects (Adel, Agustynowicz, and Wehrle 2021; Adel Ahmadian 2020; Craney and Adel 2020; Adel et al. 2018; Apolinarska et al. 2016; Helm et al. 2017; Willmann et al. 2015; Oesterle 2009) have explored the use of comprehensive digital design-to-fabrication workflows for the construction of nonstandard timber structures employing robotic assembly technologies. More recently, the Robotically Fabricated Structure (RFS), a bespoke outdoor timber pavilion, demonstrated the potential for highly articulated timber architecture using short timber elements and human-robot collaborative assembly (HRCA) (Adel 2022). In the developed HRCA process, a human operator and a human fabricator work alongside industrial robotic arms in a shared working environment, enabling collaborative fabrication approaches. Building upon this research, we present an exploration adapting HRCA to nail-laminated timber (NLT) fabrication, demonstrated through a case study exhibition (Figures 1 and 2).

summary The construction industry faces numerous challenges related to productivity, sustainability, and meeting global demands (Hatoum and Nassereddine 2020; Carra et al. 2018; Barbosa, Woetzel, and Mischke 2017; Bock 2015; Linner 2013). In response, the automation of design and construction has emerged as a promising solution. In the past three decades, researchers and innovators in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) fields have made significant strides in automating various aspects of building construction, utilizing computational design and robotic fabrication processes (Dubor et al. 2019). However, synthesizing innovation in automation encounters several obstacles. First, there is a lack of an established venue for information sharing, making it difficult to build upon the knowledge of peers. First, the absence of a well-established platform for information sharing hinders the ability to effectively capitalize on the knowledge of peers. Consequently, much of the research remains isolated, impeding the rapid dissemination of knowledge within the field (Mahbub 2015). Second, the absence of a standardized and unified process for automating design and construction leads to the individual development of standards, workflows, and terminologies. This lack of standardization presents a significant obstacle to research and learning within the field. Lastly, insufficient training materials hinder the acquisition of skills necessary to effectively utilize automation. Traditional in-person robotics training is resource-intensive, expensive, and designed for specific platforms (Peterson et al. 2021; Thomas 2013).

summary What produces this sense of aliveness as proposed by the authors of the book ""Cultivating Communities of Practice"" (Wenger et al., 2002, chap. 3), are design principles, which are intentional and strategic. These are activities and practices that have the underspecified goals to enable a community to develop, to maintain the fluidity of its boundaries, to enable differing levels of participation, to orchestrate group events and encourage interpersonal webs of relationships, to provide value to its members, to be simultaneously familiar and exciting, and to find the right rhythm of activities. ACADIA is simultaneously a formalized organization, as well as a community of practice, that embodies that very sense of “aliveness.” This has been produced not only because ACADIA has incorporated many of the principles that are characteristic of thriving groups, but primarily because of the people involved in producing, reproducing, and building anew that which we call ACADIA. The members of this community generously bring their curiosity, excitement, knowledge, and their willingness to share to each gathering and to ACADIA’s activities. This, for me, is what I most deeply value about ACADIA—the colleagues, friends, collaborators, role models, and agitators—whose conversations, debates, and collaborations nourish and inspire my work, who challenge me to continually think about our work in new ways, and who help me think about work that we should produce together.

summary This study explores the potential of mycelium composites as a sustainable and eco-friendly material for landscape architecture in the context of today's global climate and environmental crisis. Mycelium, the vegetative part of fungi, has shown promising properties such as acoustic and thermal insulation, biodegradability, and environmental performance (Vasatko et al., 2022). The central remit of this research is in proposing bespoke computational and robotic fabrication methods and workflows for investigating the performance of mycelial materials and observing their properties and growth response. Taken together, the topic of this paper is to illustrate the application and composition of such fabrication techniques as an integrated multi-material system, capable of combining the complex, organic relationships between clay, lignocellulosic substrate, and fungi with a focus on the potential of such composite materials for implementation within the built environment. Outlined here are the processes and procedures essential to this multi-material fabrication framework, including a detailed account of a series of substrate material mixtures and printed clay scaffold geometries, both of which exhibit properties informed by the material synthesis and fabrication process. We foremost propose the strategic mixing of different substrate types to be 3D printed with clay as a strategy for probing the optimization of mycelial overgrowth and binding to the 3D printed geometries. Subsequently, we proceed in detailing the study’s approach and process of 3D printing the mixtures of recycled material, drying the geometry, and sterilizing the final design once inoculated with the mycelium. Ultimately, we motivate this research in pursuit of further understanding of mycelium's material and mycoremediation capacities in service of more environmentally responsive and responsible architectural applications.

summary Point cloud processing has come a long way in the past years. Advances in computer vision (CV) and machine learning (ML) have enabled its automated recognition and processing. However, few of those developments have made it through to the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. Here, optimizing those workflows can reduce time spent on early-phase projects, which otherwise could be spent on developing innovative design solutions. Simplifying the processing of building point cloud scans makes it more accessible and therefore, usable for design, planning and decision-making. Furthermore, automated processing can also ensure that point clouds are processed consistently and accurately, reducing the potential for human error. This work is part of a larger effort to optimize early-phase design processes to promote the reuse of vacant buildings. It focuses on technical solutions to automate the reconstruction of point clouds into a digital twin as a simplified solid 3D element model. In this paper, various ML approaches, among others KPConv Thomas et al. (2019), ShapeConv Cao et al. (2021) and Mask-RCNN He et al. (2017), are compared in their ability to apply semantic as well as instance segmentation to point clouds. Further it relies on the S3DIS Armeni et al. (2017), NYU v2 Silberman et al. (2012) and Matterport Ramakrishnan et al. (2021) data sets for training. Here, the authors aim to establish a workflow that reduces the effort for users to process their point clouds and obtain object-based models. The findings of this research show that although pure point cloud-based ML models enable a greater degree of flexibility, they incur a high computational cost. We found, that using RGB-D images for classifications and segmentation simplifies the complexity of the ML model but leads to additional requirements for the data set. These can be mitigated in the initial process of capturing the building or by extracting the depth data from the point cloud.

summary The ASCAAD 2023 theme focuses on Computation, Culture, and Context; a triad that is increasingly informing and reshaping the emerging dynamics of design and construction in the built environment of several regions in the Global South. Socio-cultural spheres, heritage roots, contextual relevance, and art and material culture have historically been the primary sources for design and construction innovation and uniqueness in such regions and contexts. Complex geopolitical events however have resulted in a shift towards a perplexed practice of post-modernist styles or imported Western models of design and production, coupled with some attempts to rebrand modernist and post-modernist approaches through critical regionalism and revolts against orientalist movements. Technology and computation have always been an active factor and tool in reflecting these practices. Advancements in computational design have in some ways sparked a latent intent to revive the character and heritage of rich civilizations. While this has led to growing interest within communities belonging to such rich history to adopt computational methodologies and practices, it has equally raised questions regarding authenticity, innovation and identity. Many of the recent attempts to shift away from Western-centered orientalist approaches have in reality not been that far, but have often further accentuated the superficial use of geometrical practices and pattern-based approaches in art, architecture, and urban design, characterized by stereotypical schemes in building interiors, façade screens, and spatial configurations.

summary Although simulation models have been recently employed to model and examine pedestrian behavior in urban areas, comparable research has not been pursued in campus environments despite their importance as a critical area of inquiry. Those models' paucity and methodological limitations suggest investigating new research and design strategies to objectively assess and describe how the qualities of campus spaces and zones influence human behavior and, hence, predict the patterns of users' interaction and space usage. Those patterns and their impact on health have been pointed out as critical to the relationship among public space and quality of life due to Covid-19. There is an urgent need to develop decision support tools that would support interactive design processes and enhance the quality of open space design in terms of sense of space, place-making, and user interaction. To that goal, this study has proposed the integrated parametric BIM-based campus life simulation "CampuSIM" as a method for parametrization of the qualities of pedestrian campus zones and spaces. The study proposed the use of multi-objective optimization methods to fulfill various campus quantifiable and non-quantifiable design objectives. The significance of the proposed tool will result from its potential application in a wide range of complex, dynamic pedestrian behavior scenarios such as flows, social simulations, and design.

title Catenary Wooden Roof Structures: Precedent knowledge for future algorithmic design and construction optimisation

summary The timber industry is expanding, including construction wood product applications such as glue-laminated wood products (R. Sikkema et al., 2023). To boost further utilisation of engineered wood products in architecture, further development and optimisation of related tectonic systems is required. Integration of digital design technologies in this endeavour presents opportunities for a more performative and spatially diverse architecture production, even in construction contexts typified by limited means and/or resources. This paper reports on historic precedent case study research that informs an ongoing larger study focussing on novel algorithmic methods for the design and production of lightweight, large-span, catenary glulam roof structures. Given their structural operation in full tension, catenary-based roof structures substantially reduce material needs when compared with those relying on straight beams (Wong and Crolla, 2019). Yet, the manufacture of their non-standard geometries typically requires costly bespoke hardware setups, having resulted in recent projects trending away from the more spatially engaging geometric experiments of the second half of the 20th century. The study hypothesis that the evolutionary design optimisation of this tectonic system has the potential to re-open and expand its practically available design solution space. This paper covers the review of a range of built projects employing catenary glulam roof system, starting from seminal historic precedents like the Festival Hall for the Swiss National Exhibition EXPO 1964 (A. Lozeron, Swiss, 1964) and the Wilkhahn Pavilions (Frei Otto, Germany, 1987), to contemporary examples, including the Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre (HCMA Architecture + Design, Canada, 2016). It analysis their structural concept, geometric and spatial complexity, fabrication and assembly protocols, applied construction detailing solutions, and more, with as aim to identify methods, tools, techniques, and construction details that can be taken forward in future research aimed at minimising construction complexity. Findings from this precedent study form the basis for the evolutionary-algorithmic design and construction method development that is part of the larger study. By expanding the tectonic system’s practically applicable architecture design solution space and facilitating architects’ access to a low-tech producible, spatially versatile, lightweight, eco-friendly, wooden roof structure typology, this study contributes to environmentally sustainable building.
