summary This research project, conducted at the University of Montreal School of Architecture, presents an innovative approach to the construction of reticulated structures, focusing on the development and application of a novel, ultralight aluminum node. The node, constructed from a folded, laser-cut, 1-mm aluminum sheet, is designed to accommodate wooden linear members with varied rectangular sections, making it adaptable to bespoke geometries and low valence nodes. This innovative design offers a solution to the long-standing challenge in the construction industry of balancing cost, customization, and weight for reticulated structures through novel node designs (Abdelwahab and Tsavdaridis 2019; Dyvik et al. 2023; Chilton 2007; Rochas 2014; Hassani et al. 2020).

title Machine learning applied in the evaluation of airport projects in Brazil based on BIM models
source García Amen, F, Goni Fitipaldo, A L and Armagno Gentile, Á (eds.), Accelerated Landscapes - Proceedings of the XXVII International Conference of the Ibero-American Society of Digital Graphics (SIGraDi 2023), Punta del Este, Maldonado, Uruguay, 29 November - 1 December 2023, pp. 875–887
summary In a country with continental dimensions like Brazil, air transport plays a strategic role in the development of the country. In recent years, initiatives have been promoted to boost the development of air transport, among which the BIM BR strategy stands out, instituted by decree n-9.983 (2019), decree n-10.306 (2020) and more recently, the publication of the airport design manual (SAC, 2021). In this context, this work presents partial results of a doctoral research based on the Design Science Research (DSR) method for the application of Machine Learning (ML) techniques in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) subarea, aiming to support SAC airport project analysts in the phase of project evaluation. Based on a set of training and test data corresponding to airport projects, two ML algorithms were trained. Preliminary results indicate that the use of ML algorithms enables a new scenario to be explored by teams of airport design analysts in Brazil.

summary The construction industry faces numerous challenges related to productivity, sustainability, and meeting global demands (Hatoum and Nassereddine 2020; Carra et al. 2018; Barbosa, Woetzel, and Mischke 2017; Bock 2015; Linner 2013). In response, the automation of design and construction has emerged as a promising solution. In the past three decades, researchers and innovators in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) fields have made significant strides in automating various aspects of building construction, utilizing computational design and robotic fabrication processes (Dubor et al. 2019). However, synthesizing innovation in automation encounters several obstacles. First, there is a lack of an established venue for information sharing, making it difficult to build upon the knowledge of peers. First, the absence of a well-established platform for information sharing hinders the ability to effectively capitalize on the knowledge of peers. Consequently, much of the research remains isolated, impeding the rapid dissemination of knowledge within the field (Mahbub 2015). Second, the absence of a standardized and unified process for automating design and construction leads to the individual development of standards, workflows, and terminologies. This lack of standardization presents a significant obstacle to research and learning within the field. Lastly, insufficient training materials hinder the acquisition of skills necessary to effectively utilize automation. Traditional in-person robotics training is resource-intensive, expensive, and designed for specific platforms (Peterson et al. 2021; Thomas 2013).

summary The material balance of the Earth is being challenged. The year 2020 was marked as the year when the total weight of human-made materials globally surpassed the weight of all life on Earth, while it is estimated that in the years to come the growth rate of mass added to the anthroposphere will increase exponentially (Elhacham et al., 2020). In this context of hypergrowth coupled with the climate emergency, the growing rate of urbanization and the increasing social and political awareness on the matters of the Anthropocene, the topics of resource depletion or insufficiency are being reframed. This keynote lecture at ACADIA 2023 highlights the importance of redefining resources and is introducing a new cultural, design and construction paradigm. Operating from an abundance mindset rather than from scarcity (Gausa et al., 2020) presents a new paradigm, particularly relevant in the design and production of the built environment. This approach expands the definition of resources, encompassing raw, non-raw, renewable, and recyclable materials. Shifting attention to the Anthroposphere as a source rather than just a destination for processed goods has the potential to disrupt linear design patterns and enhance circularity in cities and the built environment.

title Towards a Genome for Zero Carbon Retrofit of UK Housing
source Dokonal, W, Hirschberg, U and Wurzer, G (eds.), Digital Design Reconsidered - Proceedings of the 41st Conference on Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe (eCAADe 2023) - Volume 2, Graz, 20-22 September 2023, pp. 197–206
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2023.2.197
summary The United Kingdom has some of the worst insulated housing stock in Northern Europe. This is in part due to the age of housing in the UK, with over 90% being built before 1990 [McCrone 2017, Piddington 2020]. Moreover, 85% of current UK housing will still be in use in 2050 by which stage their Government are targeting Net Carbon Zero [Eyre 2019]. Domestic energy use accounts for around 25% of UK carbon emissions. The UK will need to retrofit 20 million dwellings in order to meet this target. If this delivery were evenly spread, it would equate to over 2,000 retrofit completions each day. Government-funded initiatives are stimulating the market, with upwards of 60,000 social housing retrofits planned for 2023, but it is clear that a system must be developed to enable the design and implementation of housing-stock improvement at a large scale. This paper charts the 20-year development of a digital approach to the design for low-carbon domestic retrofit by architects Constructive Thinking Studio Limited and thence documents the emergence of a collaborative approach to retrofit patterns on a National scale. The author has led the Research and Development stream of this practice, developing a Building Information Modelling methodology and integrated Energy Modelling techniques to optimise design for housing retrofit [Georgiadou 2019, Ben 2020], and then inform a growing palette of details and a database of validated solutions [Moorhouse 2013] that can grow and be used to predict options for future projects [D’Angelo 2022]. The data is augmented by monitoring energy and environmental performance, enabling a growing body of knowledge that can be aligned with existing big data to simulate the benefits of nationwide stock improvement. The paper outlines incremental case studies and collaborative methods pivotal in developing this work The proposed outcome of the work is a Retrofit Genome that is available at a national level.

summary Previous research projects (Adel, Agustynowicz, and Wehrle 2021; Adel Ahmadian 2020; Craney and Adel 2020; Adel et al. 2018; Apolinarska et al. 2016; Helm et al. 2017; Willmann et al. 2015; Oesterle 2009) have explored the use of comprehensive digital design-to-fabrication workflows for the construction of nonstandard timber structures employing robotic assembly technologies. More recently, the Robotically Fabricated Structure (RFS), a bespoke outdoor timber pavilion, demonstrated the potential for highly articulated timber architecture using short timber elements and human-robot collaborative assembly (HRCA) (Adel 2022). In the developed HRCA process, a human operator and a human fabricator work alongside industrial robotic arms in a shared working environment, enabling collaborative fabrication approaches. Building upon this research, we present an exploration adapting HRCA to nail-laminated timber (NLT) fabrication, demonstrated through a case study exhibition (Figures 1 and 2).

summary Our everyday environment plays a significant role in shaping our social and emotional interactions. It has been empirically evidenced that natural daylight mitigates depression, insomnia, and other disorders (Weber, 2022). This resonates with the fact that individuals with disrupted circadian rhythms are more susceptible to mental health perturbations (Menculini et al., 2018). The current investigation delves into the correlation between luminosity and spatial configuration within the Guillermo Grantt Benavente Psychiatry Service in Concepción, Chile. The contention is that proficient spatial connectivity and exposure to natural daylight can potentially enhance therapeutic dimensions. The overarching objective is to comprehend this nexus for formulating an architectural design methodology. Specific objectives encompass: 1. Defining the communal spaces under scrutiny; 2. Analyzing luminosity and spatial attributes. The methodological approach encompasses a hybrid framework encompassing interviews, spatial analysis, and illuminance measurements. An intricate interrelationship among preferred spaces, illuminance, and spatial characteristics is anticipated.

title Parametric environment for internalization and classification of models generated by the Shap-E tool
source García Amen, F, Goni Fitipaldo, A L and Armagno Gentile, Á (eds.), Accelerated Landscapes - Proceedings of the XXVII International Conference of the Ibero-American Society of Digital Graphics (SIGraDi 2023), Punta del Este, Maldonado, Uruguay, 29 November - 1 December 2023, pp. 1689–1698
summary Computing has been increasingly employed in design environments, primarily to perform calculations and logical decisions faster than humans could, enabling tasks that would be impossible or too time-consuming to execute manually. Various studies highlight the use of digital tools and technologies in diverse methods, such as parametric modeling and evolutionary algorithms, for exploring and optimizing alternatives in architecture, design, and engineering (Martino, 2015; Fagundes, 2019). Currently, there is a growing emergence of intelligent models that increasingly integrate computers into the design process. Demonstrating great potential for initial ideation, artificial intelligence (AI) models like Shap-E (Nichol et al., 2023) by OpenAI stand out. Although this model falls short of state-of-the-art sample quality, it is among the most efficient orders of magnitude for generating three-dimensional models through AI interfaces, offering practical balance for certain use cases. Thus, aiming to explore this gap, the presented study proposes an innovative design agency framework by employing Shap-E connected with parametric modeling in the design process. The generation tool has shown promising results; through generations of synthetic views conditioned by text captions, its final output is a mesh. However, due to the lack of topological information in models generated by Shap-E, we propose to fill this gap by transferring data to a parametric three-dimensional surface modeling environment. Consequently, this interaction's use aims to enable the transformation of the mesh into quantifiable surfaces, subject to collection and optimization of dimensional data of objects. Moreover, this work seeks to enable the creation of artificial databases through formal categorization of parameterized outputs using the K-means algorithm. For this purpose, the study methodologically orients itself in a four-step exploratory experimental process: (1) creation of models generated by Shap-E in a pressing manner; (2) use of parametric modeling to internalize models into the Grasshopper environment; (3) generation of optimized alternatives using the evolutionary algorithm (Biomorpher); (4) and classification of models using the K-means algorithm. Thus, the presented study proposes, through an environment of internalization and classification of models generated by the Shap-E tool, to contribute to the construction of a new design agency methodology in the decision-making process of design. So far, this research has resulted in the generation and classification of a diverse set of three-dimensional shapes. These shapes are grouped for potential applications in machine learning, in addition to providing insights for the refinement and detailed exploration of forms.

summary The hybridization of architectural, biological and robotic agencies Situated in the field of architectural biodesign, InterspeciesForms explores a closer relationship between the fungus Pleurotus ostreatus and the designer in the creation of form. The intention of hybridizing mycelia’s agency of growth with architectural design intention is to generate novel, non-indexical crossbred designed outcomes that evolve preconceived notions of architectural form. Mycelium are threadlike fibrous root systems made up of hyphae, that form the vegetative part of a fungus (Jones 2020). Known as the hackers of the wood wide web (Simard 1997) mycelia form complex symbiotic relationships with other species that inhabit our earth. Michael Lim states “Fungi redefine resourcefulness, collaboration, resilience and symbiosis” (Lim 2022, p. 14). When wandering around the forest to connect with other species or searching for food, fungi form elaborate and entangled networks by spreading their hyphal tips. Shown in Figure 1, this living labyrinth results in the aesthetic formation of an intricate web. Due to the organisms ability to determine the most effective direction of growth, communicate with its surrounding ecosystem, and connect with other species, fungi are indeed an intelligent species with a unique aesthetic that must not be ignored. In drawing on these concepts, I refer to the organism’s ability to search for, tangle, and digest its surroundings as ‘mycelia agency of growth’. It is this specific behavioral characteristic that is the focus of this research, with which I, as the architect, set out to co-create and hybridize with.

summary In recent years, there has been a growing interest in adopting circular approaches in the built environment, specifically reusing existing buildings or their components in new projects. To achieve this, drawings, laser scanning, photogrammetry and other techniques are used to capture data on buildings and their materials. Although previous studies have explored scan-to-BIM workflows, automation of 2D drawings to 3D models, and machine learning for identifying building components and materials, a significant gap remains in refining this data into the right level of information required for digital twins, to share information and for digital collaboration in designing for reuse. To address this gap, this paper proposes digital guidelines for reusing precast concrete based on the level of information need (LOIN) standard EN 17412-1:2020 and examines several CAD and BIM modelling strategies. These guidelines can be used to prepare digital templates that become digital twins of existing elements, develop information requirements for use cases, and facilitate data integration and sharing for a circular built environment.

summary Robotic Timber Construction has been widely researched in the last decade with remarkable advancements. While existing robotic timber construction technologies were mostly developed for specific tasks, integrated platforms aiming for industrialization has become a new trend. Through the integration of timber machining center and advanced robotics, this research tries to develop an advanced timber construction platform with multi-robot system. The Timber Construction Platform is designed as a combination of three parts: multi-robot system, sensing system, and control system. While equipped with basic functions of machining centers that allows multi-scale multifunctional timber components’ prefabrication, the platform also served as an experimental facility for innovative robotic timber construction techniques, and a service platform that integrates timber structure design and construction through real-time information collection and feedback. Thereby, this platform has the potential to be directly integrated into the timber construction industry, and contributes to a mass-customized mode of timber structures design and construction.

title Machine learning in the discipline of architecture: A review on the research trends between 2014 and 2020
source International Journal of Architectural Computing 2023, Vol. 21 - no. 1, pp. 23–41
summary Abstract Through the recent technological developments within the fourth industrial revolution, artificial intelligence (AI) studies have had a huge impact on various disciplines such as social sciences, information communication technologies (ICTs), architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC). Regarding decision-making and forecasting systems in particular, AI and machine learning (ML) technologies have provided an opportunity to improve the mutual relationships between machines and humans. When the connection between ML and architecture is considered, it is possible to claim that there is no parallel acceleration as in other disciplines. In this study, and considering the latest breakthroughs, we focus on revealing what ML and architecture have in common. Our focal point is to reveal common points by classifying and analyzing current literature through describing the potential of ML in architecture. Studies conducted using ML techniques and subsets of AI technologies were used in this paper, and the resulting data were interpreted using the bibliometric analysis method. In order to discuss the state-of-the-art research articles which have been published between 2014 and 2020, main subjects, subsets, and keywords were refined through the search engines. The statistical figures were demonstrated as huge datasets, and the results were clearly delineated through Sankey diagrams. Thanks to bibliometric analyses of the current literature of WOS (Web of Science), CUMINCAD (Cumulative Index about publications in Computer Aided Architectural Design supported by the sibling associations ACADIA, CAADRIA, eCAADe, SIGraDi, ASCAAD, and CAAD futures), predictable data have been presented allowing recommendations for possible future studies for researchers.

summary Parametric Design and Fabrication are highly collaborative fields. In most projects, many people are involved with different backgrounds, skill levels, and scripting methods. The collaboration platforms currently available for these fields are primarily cross-software frameworks. They seem to miss out on the nuances of parametric design thinking, namely, focusing on the "how" rather than the "what" in creative projects. In addition, this research identifies "lack of real-time communication" as the most problematic issue with collaborative projects in Parametric Design and Digital Fabrication. This paper introduces "RemoSharp" as a platform for remote interactive collaboration in parametric modeling. This research provides qualitative and quantitative case studies that showcase the capabilities of RemoSharp as a tool for remote interactive collaboration. We demonstrate how users with different skill sets can interactively participate in projects, providing evidence ofhow RemoSharp may encourage modes of communication that improve group work in parametric design workflows. Altogether, this research showcases how RemoSharp provides a generalizable solution for remote collaboration in computational design and digital fabrication.

summary AI-assisted urban design software can streamline development processes by focusing on massing studies that satisfy legal provisions, providing high-quality and optimized estimations. However, designer-oriented technical tools for urban and architectural design prevent some stakeholders, such as policymakers and citizens, from participating in the design process, potentially leading to poorly negotiated proposals, delaying their execution, and causing social deadweight loss. This paper presents Speedy Facade, a framework to enable the active participation of all stakeholders, by converting human verbal descriptions into textured 3D building facades inside traversable urban models. Speedy Facade consists of (1.) an interactive user interface for verbal inputs and keyword selections, (2.) an augmented reality environment with projected façade reference images that can be modified by mask projection selections and regenerations, and (3.) an editable three-dimensional model for experience and design development. The paper discusses the implementation approach and contribution to the urban design process of this work and showcases its applications, and prospects for future expansion.

title Walkability: Digital Parametric Process for Analyzing and Evaluating Walkability Criteria in Peripheral Central Regions of Belo Horizonte
source García Amen, F, Goni Fitipaldo, A L and Armagno Gentile, Á (eds.), Accelerated Landscapes - Proceedings of the XXVII International Conference of the Ibero-American Society of Digital Graphics (SIGraDi 2023), Punta del Este, Maldonado, Uruguay, 29 November - 1 December 2023, pp. 397–408
summary According to one of the Sustainable Development Goals (UN, 2018), it is important for cities to be inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Therefore, it is necessary to value pedestrians and consequently active mobility, giving priority to the concepts of the Transportation Oriented Development (TOD) methodology. Although the Master Plan (BELO HORIZONTE, 2019) proposes that areas located in regional centralities are enhancing active mobility, can residents actually benefit from these resources at a walkable distance to access basic services? Thus, the aim of this research is to utilize digital technologies to visualize, analyze, and assess pedestrians' access conditions to commerce and basic services, identifying areas lacking infrastructure. The goal is for the model to serve as a reference for the development of public policies. To achieve this, metadata was used for parametric modeling to study walkability in the peripheral region of the city of Belo Horizonte.

title Correlations between urban and demographic data and COVID-19 data: a case study in Fortaleza, Brazil
source García Amen, F, Goni Fitipaldo, A L and Armagno Gentile, Á (eds.), Accelerated Landscapes - Proceedings of the XXVII International Conference of the Ibero-American Society of Digital Graphics (SIGraDi 2023), Punta del Este, Maldonado, Uruguay, 29 November - 1 December 2023, pp. 1667–1678
summary COVID-19 was a sanitary crisis of international impact. However, its effects weren’t experienced equally. In Fortaleza, epidemiological reports (2021;2022) point to different infection patterns between high Human Development Index (HDI) and low HDI neighborhoods, which surfaced the hypothesis that certain territories’ characteristics could correlate to COVID-19 data. This article describes a phase of a three-phase research, whose objective is to identify correlations between urban and demographic (UD) data to COVID-19 data. To this, a literature review was done to select seven UD variables and four COVID-19 ones, then, Spearman’s correlation was applied in four pandemic time frames (TF). Results show that literacy rates, monthly income and energy have either low or moderate positive correlations with contamination rates in most TF. However, they’ve shown low or moderate correlations with lethality rates in three TF. Population density showed low positive correlations to either lethality rates or total number of deaths in three TF.
