summary Thank you to the ACADIA team for extending the invitation to come here. For me, it's a really fantastic moment to reconnect with the ACADIA community. I've been dipping in and out of it since -- I think my first ACADIA was in Savannah, Georgia. Does anyone remember what year that was? 2001? 2002? I've been dipping in and out. And I really see this community as a model. You know, we could talk about the Mississippi and how it meanders, and passages of energy and matter and information begin to change. And the ACADIA community meanders across these different territories, but somehow it maintains its particular identity. And that identity, I think, is shrouded within ideals of sharing -- knowledge sharing -- and within a kind of creative design research, you know, rigor, which I find really fascinating.

summary Well, hello. Thanks for having me. Hopefully, not everyone is too exhausted. But we'll get through it. So, you know, in some ways I feel like a guest, an intruder -- there's different words -- to a conference such as this. I am trained as a graphic designer and a photographer. But somehow, you know, I find myself between disciplines. And one of them is architecture. What we will talk about today is a project that started around 2018 called ""Model Home"", which is sort of the larger chapter. Most of the work I do is either in writing essays, as well as film. There's not enough time to show the film today, but if you are interested, just come and ask me after.

summary Transforming a single, flat sheet of material into a rigid, three-dimensional structure through folding seems simple and straightforward. However, it is precisely that self-explanatory nature of folding that is so attractive. When reflecting on my research in the area of foldable structures and materials, a series of conceptual ideas resonates with the work beyond the literal technical contributions (images 1 to 4). There is nothing worse than seeing a student sitting at their desk, scratching their head, not knowing what to do. If you do not know what to do, do something. Sometimes within my research I do have a specific idea or problem which I am trying to solve. For example, designing an ultra-thin folded formwork for concrete casting. However, many times I just fold paper as a means to openly explore the unknown without any pragmatic agenda. In the end, both approaches (conceptually-driven and tool-driven) are equally valuable.

title Multi-approach integration of ALS and TLS point clouds for a 3-D building modeling at LoD3

summary Registering, documenting, updating, revitalizing, expanding, and renovating old urban buildings require proper documentation. The adoption of 3D survey techniques is essential to grant efficiency and agility to such purposes. This article discusses a multi-approach integration of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data collected by aerial and terrestrial platforms, meant for the 3D modeling of a building at Level of Detail 3. The selected building presents challenging elements for modeling, such as blocks with different heights and indented facades. It is located on the campus of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) in Curitiba, Brazil, on a site with irregular terrain and surrounded by trees, what made the terrestrial laser scanning process difficult. For its three-dimensional reconstruction, data from an Aerial Laser Scanning system were integrated with data from a Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS). Based on the 3D modeling, an as-is Building Information Modeling model of the building’s exterior was created. To validate the results, measurements of the building were obtained by means of an Electronic Distance Measurement (EDM) device and they were then compared with measurements extracted from the point cloud-based BIM model. The results demonstrate that there was a correspondence between the EDM and the LiDAR-derived measures, attaining a satisfactory statistical agreement. The article focuses on the accuracy of LiDAR models for the cadastral update of buildings, providing information for decision making in documentation projects and construction interventions. The main contribution of this work consists in a multi-approach workflow for delivering an effective and precise solution for accomplishing an as-is BIM documentation, highlighting advantages, drawbacks, and the potential of this set of methods for integrating multi-source LiDAR point clouds.

summary The conference logo is a bird’s eye view of spiral stairs that join and separate – an homage to the famous double spiral staircase in Graz, a tourist attraction of this city and a must-see for any architecturally minded visitor. Carved out of limestone, the medieval construction of the original is a daring feat of masonry as well as a symbolic gesture. The design speaks of separation and reconciliation: The paths of two people that climb the double spiral stairs separate and then meet again at each platform. The relationship between architectural design and the growing digital repertoire of tools and possibilities seems to undergo similar cycles of attraction and rejection: enthusiasm about digital innovations – whether in Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Energy Design, Robotic Fabrication, the many Dimensions of BIM or, as right now, in AI and Machine Learning – is typically followed by a certain disillusionment and a realization that the promises were somewhat overblown. But a turn away from these digital innovations can only be temporary. In our call for papers we refer to the first and second ‘digital turns’, a term Mario Carpo coined. Yes, it’s a bit of a pun, but you could indeed see these digital turns in our logo as well. Carpo would probably agree that design and the digital have become inseparably intertwined. While they may be circling in different directions, an innovative rejoinder is always just around the corner. The theme of the conference asked participants to re-consider the relationship between Design and the Digital. The notion of a cycle is already present in the syllable “re”. Indeed, 20 years earlier, in 2003, we held an ECAADE conference in Graz simply under the title “Digital Design” and our re-using – or is it re-cycling? – the theme can be seen as the completion of one of those cycles described above: One level up, we meet again, we’ve come full circle. The question of the relationship between Design and the Digital is still in flux, still worthy of renewed consideration. There is a historical notion implicit in the theme. To reconsider something, one needs to take a step back, to look into the past as well as into the future. Indeed, at this conference we wanted to take a longer view, something not done often enough in the fast-paced world of digital technology. Carefully considering one’s past can be a source of inspiration. In fact, the double spiral stair that inspired our conference logo also inspired many architects through the ages. Konrad Wachsmann, for example, is said to have come up with his famous Grapevine assembly system based on this double spiral stair and its intricate joinery. More recently, Rem Koolhaas deemed the double spiral staircase in Graz important enough to include a detailed model of it in his “elements of architecture” exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2014. Our interpretation of the stair is a typically digital one, you might say. First of all: it’s a rendering of a virtual model; it only exists inside a computer. Secondly, this virtual model isn’t true to the original. Instead, it does what the digital has made so easy to do: it exaggerates. Where the original has just two spiral stairs that separate and join, our model consists of countless stairs that are joined in this way. We see only a part of the model, but the stairs appear to continue in all directions. The implication is of an endless field of spiral stairs. As the 3D model was generated with a parametric script, it would be very easy to change all parameters of it – including the number of stairs that make it up. Everyone at this conference is familiar with the concept of parametric design: it makes generating models of seemingly endless amounts of connected spiral stairs really easy. Although, of course, if we’re too literal about the term ‘endless’, generating our stair model will eventually crash even the most advanced computers. We know that, too. – That's another truth about the Digital: it makes a promise of infinity, which, in the end, it can’t keep. And even if it could: what’s the point of just adding more of the same: more variations, more options, more possible ways to get lost? Doesn’t the original double spiral staircase contain all those derivatives already? Don’t we know that ‘more’ isn’t necessarily better? In the original double spiral stair the happy end is guaranteed: the lovers’ paths meet at the top as well as when they exit the building. Therefore, the stair is also colloquially known as the Busserlstiege (the kissing stair) or the Versöhnungsstiege (reconciliation stair). In our digitally enhanced version, this outcome is no longer clear: we can choose between multiple directions at each level and we risk losing sight of the one we were with. This is also emblematic of our field of research. eCAADe was founded to promote “good practice and sharing information in relation to the use of computers in research and education in architecture and related professions” (see ecaade.org). That may have seemed a straightforward proposition forty years ago, when the association was founded. A look at the breadth and depth of research topics presented and discussed at this conference (and as a consequence in this book, for which you’re reading the editorial) shows how the field has developed over these forty years. There are sessions on Digital Design Education, on Digital Fabrication, on Virtual Reality, on Virtual Heritage, on Generative Design and Machine Learning, on Digital Cities, on Simulation and Digital Twins, on BIM, on Sustainability, on Circular Design, on Design Theory and on Digital Design Experimentations. We hope you will find what you’re looking for in this book and at the conference – and maybe even more than that: surprising turns and happy encounters between Design and the Digital.

title Can Architecture Be Cybernetic Machine: From Cedric Price’s Fun Palace to the Pompidou Centre

summary An early and basic definition of cybernetics is the study of "circular causal and feedback mechanisms in biological and social systems". Generally, the key of cybernetics is communication and control, in another words, information transmission and feedback mechanisms. According to that, we can put forward a definition of “cybernetic machine”, that is an object which can obtain information, deal with information and eventually give a feedback. About 13 years after the birth of cybernetics, as a representative of the second generation cybernetics scholars, Gordon Pask took part in Cedric Price’s Fun Palace, which brought cybernetics to the architecture field. What Cedric Price try to achieve in the Fun Palace is to make architecture become a cybernetic machine and from then on, many architects keep exploring on this. However, the Fun Palace, along with many works influenced by it such as Archigram's Plug-in City, are paper architecture. So, can architecture really be a cybernetic machine that can be built? In this article, that question is discussed through analysing Cedric Price’s Inter-Action Centre, which is regarded as the closest built work to the Fun Palace, and the Pompidou Centre, which was influenced by the Fun Palace and show the ambition of becoming a cybernetic machine in its competition stage. The article will introduce how cybernetics comes into architecture field with the key architect Cedric Price and how the idea of making architecture become a cybernetic machine develops after that, focussing on the paper architects the Archigram and the built work the Pompidou Centre.

summary Reconsidering CAAD, it can be stated that the technical possibilities are no longer an obstacle to accomplishing what one wants to achieve. The reflection and the discourse now concern rather the product that is produced with its aid. The second digital turn is thus one back to the matter. The digital is ubiquitous. But this does not apply to its teaching by a long shot. Here, it is essential to continueto reflect on the specifics of the digital, above all the danger of automatisms. Nevertheless, at the core of the research on the use of the CAAD is the content, and here the authors have developed a method for visualising uncertainty in the knowledge of archaeology, historical building research and art history. It is a translation of vague verbal hypotheses into the visual. This is obviously done via CAAD, since the hypotheses are statements about space, about architecture. What is special about this method is the balance between scientificity and vividness. Usually, a great adherence to scientificity leads to schematic diagrams, far from any architectural expression, informative but not immersive. Vivid visualisations, on the other hand, are usually speculatively charged life pictures, based in a scientific statement, but enriched by pure fantasy to such an extent that the scientific content is either drowned out or even distorted. The way in which the authors translate scientific statements into the visual therefore utilises two traditional and genuine sub-disciplines of architecture, model building and photography. While the CAAD model follows the scientific hypothesis in its abstraction, it is the rules of architectural photography that create a vivid and thus architecturally interpretable vision from this abstract geometry. The distinctive characteristic is that CAAD is not used to construct or simulate architecture, but to translate verbal hypotheses, so basically it is Computer Aided Mental Modelling.

summary What does it take to run the ACADIA conference? The answer, unsurprisingly, is coffee. Volunteers brewed fifty gallons of it over the course of three days this year in Denver. You will also need a lot of iced green tea, diet coke, and chocolate. The theme this year is caffeine -- leave the instant decaf and herbal teas at Costco, thank you. But before you start the coffee maker, you will need to assemble swag bags. Once the swag arrived, it took hours to fill the bags -- dozens of cardboard boxes emptying as volunteers slowly lost ground to the “sea of red” overtaking every square inch of the storage room.

summary The larger visual identity of a city is often a blend of smaller and distinct visual character zones. Despite the recent popularity of street-view imagery for visual analytics, its role in uncovering such urban visual clusters has been fairly limited. Taking Mumbai as a demonstrative case, we present what is arguably the first city-wide visual cluster analysis of an Indian metropolis. We use a Dense Prediction Transformer (DPT) for semantic segmentation of over 28000 Google Street View (GSV) images collected from over 7000 locations across the city. Unsupervised k-means clustering is carried out on the extracted semantic features (such as greenery, sky-view, built-density etc.) for the identification of distinct urban visual typologies. Through iterative analysis, 7 key visual clusters are identified, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is used to visualize the variance across them. The feature distributions of each cluster are then qualitatively and quantitatively analysed in order to examine their unique visual configurations. Spatial distributions of the clusters are visualized as well, thus mapping out the different ‘faces’ of the city. It is hoped that the methodology outlined in this work serves as a base for similar cluster-based inquiries into the visual dimension of other cities across the globe.

title Open AI in the Design Process - To what extent can text-to-image software support future architects in the early design process?

summary The laborious creation of digital images could soon be a thing of the past. Text-to-image software generates images from text descriptions through artificial intelligence, the AI can map entirely new concepts and create images in a variety of artistic styles. Existing text-to-image software is already publicly available, but does it live up to its promise, and can it be more useful to architects in their search for inspiration than previous software that uses visual search to display images? In this paper, we address the opportunities and problems of text-to-image software. To answer our question, we use a key study, this is divided into two user groups. The subjects of group A are to use DALL·E 2 to search for inspiration for a design whose task is: Design a museum with a boat dock. The same design task is also given to the subjects of group B, with the difference that they are to use Pinterest to find inspiration.We will then contrast the results of these surveys. We will document the differences of the user experience and the output of DALL·E 2 to Pinterest as well as about advantages and disadvantages of DALL·E 2 and possible future developments, and application areas of text-to-image software.

summary This article presents a novel architecture design workflow that explores the intersection of Big Data, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and storytelling by scraping, encoding, and mapping data, which can then be implemented through Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies. In contrast to conventional approaches that consider AI solely as an optimization tool, this workflow embraces AI as an instrument for critical thinking and idea generation. Rather than creating new AI models, this workflow encourages architects to experiment with existing ones as part of their practice. The workflow revolves around the concept of ""Canonical architecture,"" where data-driven techniques serve to traverse dimensions and representations, encompassing text, images, and 3D objects. The data utilized consists of information specific to the project, gathered from social media posts, including both images and text, which provide insights into user needs and site charac- teristics. Additionally, roughly 9,000 3D models of architectural details extracted from 38 different architectural projects were used. The primary objective is to assist architects in developing a workflow that does not suggest starting from scratch or a tabula rasa, but to work with already hyper-connected objects, be it text, images, 3D models, et cetera. These conceptualizations can then be enacted in game engines and/or experimented with in AR/ VR platforms, while keeping their connections alive. Through this process, the framework aims to develop a sensibility of working with large amounts of data without losing focus, and letting the electric grounds of the internet help us in articulating projects.

title Reinterpreting the Courtyard in Modern Indian Architecture: A Computational Study on Configurations

summary India is a land of significantly varying cultures, climates, and hence, a myriad of architectural styles and elements. Courtyard, one such element, had emerged as a result of multiple factors including not only climate and its context but the community and its culture as well. It is true reflection of the diversity that the country showcases. From the Havelis in Rajasthan and Gujarat to the Wadas in Maharashtra, it has always been an integral part of Indian architecture and its heritage. However, despite being such deeply rooted in the country's heritage, it has started to go missing in modern construction. Various changes in social, cultural, and climatic patterns have made courtyards either an element of luxury or a lost element of the past. What exists today is a vague notion of this element, whose origin is muddled, and the science behind it is lost. One needs to understand that leaving an empty space or a cut-out is neither the true identity nor the authentic form of a courtyard. This configuration depends on a plethora of factors, one of which is Enclosure, governed by width, length, and height. Configurations formed with varied enclosed proportions not only have a psychological influence on the user owing to volume change but also affect air circulation and temperature change. However, the modern application of courtyards is often theoretically examined, resulting in a lack of practical application of its methodologies and design techniques. Hence, different spatial possibilities create an opportunity to use computational methods such as modeling and simulation techniques to form cases of varying degrees and forms of enclosures. It enables the research to reinterpret courtyards in today’s modern context using computer-aided design for a more data-driven exploration for higher human well-being in designed spaces, optimized microclimate, and a more sustainable building. Thus, the paper aims to understand the age-old concept of the courtyard through a scientific lens with the help of modern computational techniques. It will evaluate different configurations formed through simulations graphically. Through the case of Bengaluru, Karnataka, a modern city that experiences a temperate climate in India, the paper will showcase how changing enclosures and various positions of openings can incorporate the true essence of a courtyard in today’s modern architecture. Further, a similar study of different climatic conditions can bring back the lost heritage to the country in its truest form through a futuristic design process that is not only data-driven but also more human and community-centric.

summary According to one of the Sustainable Development Goals (UN, 2018), it is important for cities to be inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Therefore, it is necessary to prioritize pedestrians and promote active mobility, giving them priority and encouraging walking, as presented in the concepts of TOD (Transit-Oriented Development). Although the master plan suggests that areas located in the regional centrality of Belo Horizonte are enhancing active mobility, residents may still need to use individual or public transportation due to long distances when accessing basic services on foot. In peripheral areas of the city of Belo Horizonte, are there favorable walkability conditions for the residents? Thus, the aim of this research is to use digital technologies to investigate, through a parametric performative model, the quality of the existing routes, with a focus on the peripheral areas of the city. Based on the results obtained, it will be possible to conclude whether there are discrepancies between what is presented in the master plan and, ultimately, to identify potential solutions for the area based on metrics that qualify and enhance active mobility. These solutions may vary according to the specific needs of the location.

summary Hi. I have three questions for Simone. They are kind of built on top of each other. I will try to be as brief as I can. The first is about language. You talked about how object recognition algorithms have these kinds of different categories, such as the difference between iPod and media player. So how much of the kind of errors we are seeing in the case of the chairs are contributed by the limits of the language? And the second question is kind of built on top of that. It's like the matter of context. When those chairs, as shown without background, they are kind of floating objects. So how would multi-modal inputs, such as image to image, or video to 3D, will contribute or improve the algorithm's understanding of the context? And the third one is something that you haven't talked about as much as the matter of user agency. I was thinking about the diagram between the cup and the bowl. And something similar, such as a glass used for drinking water when it's tall enough. At some point, it can be used as a vase. What kind of situation would enable users to make different decisions about what the object is used for?

summary In the Neret language, ‘Yamal’ denotes “the land’s end”, which is precisely what the peninsula is – an arctic lowland in Northwestern Russia, sparsely populatedwith burgeoning, oil-based infrastructure. This land is the site of a multi-front war between ice and oil (Figure 1). Behind closed doors, the Arctic Consortium took on the challenge of geo-engineering the Yamal Peninsula. This document contains evidence of their interventions within the Yamal Peninsula, specifically as this anonymous group of individuals got to work, as a speculation on the possibilities of geo-engineering of the shifting environment (Figure 2).

summary In this paper, we intend to analyze Donald Judd’s “100 untiled works in mill aluminum” to see whether they belong to a system, and, if so, what that system is and what delimits it. Our hypothesis is that there is a system driven by shape data, but the system is tempered by improvisational moments at multiple junctures in the project. We are interested in deciphering the systematic, but also the moments of artistic improvisation. To that end, we will look at the roots of data-driven design in the “serial” artworks of the early 1960’s documented in two Artforum essays by Bochner and Coplans, both citing Donald Judd. This period of artistic production is critical in the context of the development of shape grammars in computation which followed in the early 70’s with Stiny and Gips’s Shape Grammar essay. In 1983, Knight used shape grammar to describe the transformation of design languages. In the same period, Donald Judd, without the aid of computation or knowledge of shape grammar, developed a grammar towards the design of “100 untiled works in mill aluminum.” We intend to explore Judd’s 100 works as an example of the utilization of information and its analysis towards design and innovation, and to highlight the role of artistic improvisation in a systemic design process.

summary The MSc Bio-Digital Architecture at Kent School of Architecture & Planning is a post-professional program developing a specialist approach to architectural thinking and design execution, encouraging students to engage with broader theoretical debates that are pertinent to contemporary practice. The program emphasizes the conundrum of “what is space” and provokes students to explore the concept of space and the problem of configuring space in architecture. Taking an interdisciplinary approach (spanning theoretical biology, social science, systems theory, cybernetics, semiotics and computation) students are expected to establish ways and means of rethinking and designing architectural space. In the current situation, where the integrity and primary role of architecture is seriously challenged by specialized research and partial interpretations of the discipline, there is a growing need to articulate a body of knowledge and understanding capable of reconciling the fragmented areas of knowledge within the given reality of current contemporary architectural practice. The aim of the course is to establish a comprehensive understanding of architecture rooted in the humanities, with an emphasis on the digital turn in architectural discourse and theory, to integrate knowledge of specialized disciplines into a unified and meaningful whole. The integrative nature of the student investigation’s opens the possibility to come to terms with the situational structure of architecture and can serve at the same time as a foundation for a more fully developed human ecology.

summary In 2018 I was invited to visit the archipelago of Kiribati, located in the Pacific Ocean around 1000 miles from Hawaii. A big ocean state, Kiribati holds a land mass of around 315 sq. miles and an oceanic economic zone of 1,328,890 sq. mi. Tarawa, the most inhabited of the islands peaks at around 3 m above sea level. I went to Kiribati in part to meet with Dr Teweiariki Teaero, a renowned scholar, poet and educator who had directed the Oceania Center at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji for many years before returning to his homeland where at the time he had been planning on running for government. Teweiariki spoke with me at length about the status of Kiribati as one of the already most critically affected frontline nations. I asked him what was a lesson for non-Pacific Islanders to learn about understanding everyday life there. He said to me “Two ears, one mouth, don’t talk too much. Learn to listen more. Not only to hear, but to be able to develop another thing and that is to be able to interpret. These things are different, they occur at different levels. The hearing and the interpretation of the sound…it’s very much part of our world” (Teaero 2018).

summary My work is research focused. Broadly speaking, I’m interested in the “How” of creative production, as opposed to the “What”. I ask “How is this?” not “What is this?” I am interested in “How” designs and things are made or become, in the processes or paths to form, whether abstract or material. As a process carried out over time, computation offers a unique means for understanding and describing the “How” of design and making. I explore this potential with shape grammars and, most recently, with making grammars. The unique visual and spatial nature of the rules and computations of these grammars is aimed at unveiling the “How” in design.
