title A formal approach for the interpretation of cultural content(s): evolution of a Korean traditional pattern, Bosangwhamun
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2010.019
source Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / Hong Kong 7-10 April 2010, pp. 19-28
summary This paper develops a formal approach to investigate the evolution of a Korean traditional pattern, Bosangwhamun. The approach employs the structure of symbolic memes embedded in the pattern as a framework of hierarchical decomposition of a pattern to describe an evolutionary development process of a given pattern with a set of rules in shape grammar as style changes. Further, the formal descriptions of the given pattern become the basis for generating its variations. With this process, the validity of the rules and their appropriateness in the representation of Bosangwhamun are examined.

summary Physically-based manipulation can be recognized as a promising approach to implement interactive computational tools to solve the user participation problems. To support the designer’s justifications as well as to clarify the innately ambiguous expressions provided by the clients, we propose to build a fuzzy-based expert system integrated with a 3D physically based manipulation. This paper focuses on a system prototype for the client customization process in apartment plan design to exemplify our concepts.

summary Can artificial intelligence be used for design behavior of human beings? Human designer’s behavior and design thinking are extremely complicated. There is still argument about the relationship between the two until now. Therefore, this research only investigates regular and common design behavior. This essay is taking Mondrian of Neo-Plasticism as an example and neural networks systems as a tool to illustrate the core idea. It is hoped that we can simulate the design thinking ability, such as memory association and recognition of human designers. Computation of neural networks systems, as a result and the difference between human designers and computer, can be discussed too. Also, since the work of Neo-Plasticism Mondrian influences contemporary architecture design, industrial design, andvisual design directly or indirectly, floorplans of architect John Hejduk’s works were taken as an example to discuss the application of Neural networkss in the design field.

title Developing the Reinforcement-Learning Child Agents for Measuring Play and Learning Performance in Kindergarten Design
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2023.1.069
source Dokonal, W, Hirschberg, U and Wurzer, G (eds.), Digital Design Reconsidered - Proceedings of the 41st Conference on Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe (eCAADe 2023) - Volume 1, Graz, 20-22 September 2023, pp. 69–78
summary Although kindergarten design requires promoting play behaviours related to physical and social development and ensuring safety of children to support a child-oriented design, the systemic evaluation of design performance remains challenging because of the children’s dynamic play behaviours. As one solution, agent-based simulations have been applied in the design field, but there are limitations in reflecting children’s behavioural richness. To overcome this shortcoming, this study developed reinforcement learning (RL) child agents to compute the dynamic play behaviours associated with physical and social development. Several iterations were conducted to implement the RL agents’ play behaviours, and the results were incorporated into the simulation. To validate the play behaviour model, we conducted a case analysis with authentic and unbuilt kindergarten designs and measured the quantifiable design performance in terms of physical and social play behaviours and safety. The results indicated that the RL child agents enabled a holistic analysis and the calculation of generative behavioural responses, depending on physical variations. By facilitating an unknown design affordance, the RL-powered simulation model is expected to provide data-driven evidence to support a child-oriented design.

source T. Fukuda, W. Huang, P. Janssen, K. Crolla, S. Alhadidi (eds.), Learning, Adapting and Prototyping - Proceedings of the 23rd CAADRIA Conference - Volume 2, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, 17-19 May 2018, pp. 411-420
summary This study applies self-organization as a methodology to understand the complex process of city networks caused by interactions between spatial structures and individual behaviors. The agent-based simulations have been conducted to investigate the visible and invisible networks understanding the self-organized aspects of city development processes. To develop optimal future networks providing connectivity and accessibility this study investigates spatial network configurations from internal individual behavior and movement. As results, it was found that the spatial configurations of the agent movement trails match to the current district boundaries and the similar network patterns were seen in various control values of agent behavior settings. This study contributes to searching out the hierarchy of network structures which is an important factor for re-planning of the way system.

doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2018.2.143
source T. Fukuda, W. Huang, P. Janssen, K. Crolla, S. Alhadidi (eds.), Learning, Adapting and Prototyping - Proceedings of the 23rd CAADRIA Conference - Volume 2, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, 17-19 May 2018, pp. 143-151
summary The unique integration of geometries and techniques allows the natural organisms to adapt to different environments in creative ways. In this study, a bio-inspired pneumatic facade is presented as a strategy to improve the efficiency of natural ventilation performance by controlling the adaptive openings. The Computational Fluid Dynamics simulation has been conducted to visualize airflows in order to explore how the changing configurations of openings enhance natural ventilation efficiency. The airflows are investigated with changes in wind speed and direction to find out the opening configurations which provide indoor airflows at the comfort level of velocities. As results, it was shown that indoor air velocities were modulated by controlling opening sizes, geometries and positions of the openings, and it was a beneficial strategy to apply the optimized opening configurations implementing automatic control. Also, the air distribution can be enhanced by changing opening configurations in changing conditions of wind speed and direction. An effective methodology for an intelligent façade opening control to encourage natural ventilation is presented in this study to deliver users comfort and efficiency.

title Agent-driven Accessibility and Visibility Analysis in Nursing Units
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2019.1.351
source M. Haeusler, M. A. Schnabel, T. Fukuda (eds.), Intelligent & Informed - Proceedings of the 24th CAADRIA Conference - Volume 1, Victoria University of Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand, 15-18 April 2019, pp. 351-360
summary This study investigates the nursing unit design for care quality and efficient operation, evaluating visibility and walking distance of nurses in the different form of layout. Sufficient visibility from nurses' station to patient rooms and corridors can increase nurses' care abilities to understand the needs and movements of patients. The workload and time caused by nurse's walking can be diverted to patient care. Isovist analysis and agent-based simulation are experimented to investigate the effects of spatial layout on visibility and nurses' accessibility to patients. In the isovist analysis, the nurses' station facing patient rooms were more effective in nurse-to-patient visibility. In the nurse's walking trail analysis, uneven walking distance of each nurse appeared due to the asymmetric patient room layout centering the nurses' station and heavy room allocation plan. Understanding the potential impacts of design parameters enables designers to predict possible behaviors in each design alternative and to make effective and efficient design decisions for the occupants. This study underlines the role of the physical environment in the delivery of patient care and nurse's well-being. It presents an evaluation framework integrating syntactic analysis and agent-based simulation to predict the effect of the spatial layouts on the hospital activities.

title An Intuitive Heritage Education System for Learning Architectural Structures and Styles - Focusing on the historical Korean architectures
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2016.2.529
source Herneoja, Aulikki; Toni Österlund and Piia Markkanen (eds.), Complexity & Simplicity - Proceedings of the 34th eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, University of Oulu, Oulu, Finland, 22-26 August 2016, pp. 529-537
summary Although national and international attention toward the cultural heritage is on a rise, there is a lack of public attention toward cultural heritage sites. One of the main problems is the lack of interaction and the visualization of cultural heritage on the sites. Especially Korean historical architectures are structurally complex and are not easily understood by common people. To improve the public awareness of architectural heritages, we propose a model-based diagnosis system to educate the visitors and tourists. The system is designed to guide the users to model an appropriate architecture in accordance with the era, location, and the usage. For the system, we built a robust set of cases based on the ontological structure we designed especially for architectural heritage education. It basically enables users to reconstruct buildings intuitively in six steps from bottom to top. A system evaluation was conducted on the affective, cognitive, operative aspect of the system at a heritage site. The results show well in terms of cognitive aspect but was evaluated poorly in terms of the operative aspect.

title A context immersion of mixed reality at a new stage
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2011.199
source Proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / The University of Newcastle, Australia 27-29 April 2011, pp. 199-208
summary This paper presents a novel approach to the potential of mixed reality embodied in smart phones and ubiquitous environments. We analyzed the related works to the concept of context and mobile computing and then investigated into leading companies by interviewing senior manages of the mixed reality (MR) projects in Korea. As a result, the concept of context immersion is proposed for describing the various context relationships among the real locations, objects and persons. By considering the MR environments as a converged world, this paper characterizes the context immersion as the combination of the time & location-based, object-based and user-based contexts. Through the context immersion, users can be connected to the real life, not limited to the imagery world, thus experiencing strong immersion in the MR environments. At the end, we present the development direction for the future with a focus on the MR contents rather than the technical aspects.

title Rethinking and Designing the Key Behaviours of Architectural Responsiveness in the Digital Age
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2018.1.359
source T. Fukuda, W. Huang, P. Janssen, K. Crolla, S. Alhadidi (eds.), Learning, Adapting and Prototyping - Proceedings of the 23rd CAADRIA Conference - Volume 1, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, 17-19 May 2018, pp. 359-368
summary In the late 1960s the architect Nicholas Negroponte introduced that the physical environment could exhibit reflexive and simulated behaviours, an idea that has since been widely explored. Despite of this wider interest, there is not, however, a systematic approach to understanding architectural responsiveness in the digital age. This paper aims to provide a formal way to facilitate designing smart and interactive artificiality in the built environment. This paper presents a conceptual framework, through exploratory studies on recent architecture, highlighting four key behaviours: (1) tangible interaction, (2) embodied response, (3) ambient simulation, and (4) mixed reality. In addition, two essential enablers, collectiveness and immersion, are proposed to enhance these key behaviours. This framework can be used as a tool to systematically identify and characterise the responsiveness of "responsive architecture". The creative mixtures of the key behaviours will contribute to the development of unique responsive environments.

source P. Janssen, P. Loh, A. Raonic, M. A. Schnabel (eds.), Protocols, Flows, and Glitches - Proceedings of the 22nd CAADRIA Conference, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Suzhou, China, 5-8 April 2017, pp. 365-374
summary This paper uses a Space Syntax approach - a computational and mathematical method using graph-based measurements - to undertake a comparative assessment of the visibility properties of three architectural plans with unusual spatial requirements. Specifically, the method is used to compare the spatio-visual properties of an idealised plan for a residential aged-care facility with the actual plans used for two facilities. The purpose of this analysis is to begin to examine the ways in which syntactical values and isovist properties can be used to capture spatial and social characteristics of plans designed for the physical and cognitive needs of an ageing populace. The application of this approach seeks to support a better understanding of the relationship between spaces and their social properties in the design of aged-care facilities.

title The language of design: Spatial cognition and spatial language in parametric design
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 14 - no. 3, 277-288
summary This article develops a new research framework and method combining cognitive and linguistic approaches to investigate parametric design. At the core of this new approach is a dual-coding system for protocol analysis, which can formally capture both cognitive and linguistic characteristics of the design process. In this article, the method is applied to the analysis of the results of a design experimental undertaken by a set of Australian and Swedish architects working individually in a parametric environment. The results of the experiment demonstrate the effectiveness of the dual-coding system and, with the support of linkography, facilitate the in-depth exploration of design cognition and its relationship to spatial language. This method directly contributes to a new insight into the role of language in design.

source Open Systems: Proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2013) / Singapore 15-18 May 2013, pp. 489-498
summary This paper deals with the generative and evolutionary aspects of parametric design. We aim to provide a better understanding of individual design strategies to support creativity in parametric design via protocol analysis. An in-depth analysis conceptualises subjects’ creative strategies into two models: problem-driven strategy and solution-driven strategy. The solution-driven strategy progress design in the solution space resulted in the highest value in the level of creativity. This is one of potential aspects of parametric design. title Understanding Cognitive Activities in Parametric Design
source Global Design and Local Materialization[Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures / ISBN 978-3-642-38973-3] Shanghai, China, July 3-5, 2013, pp. 38-49.
summary Parametric design offers a new paradigm in the field of ComputerAided Design; a paradigm focused on the potential for producing design variations. However, despite this potential, the cognitive activities associated with parametric design are not well understood. The authors of this paper present a formal method for capturing cognitive activities via protocol analysis. To support the interpretation of this method, this paper evaluates creativity implicit in design products by way of a consensual assessment technique. The findings identify two cognitive activities (‘making generation’ and ‘changing existing parameters’) as potential critical to divergent thinking and the restructuring of design components. These activities facilitate the generative aspects of parametric design. The paper concludes with a discussion of three cognitive levels (physical, perceptual and conceptual) that support an understanding of cognitive activities in parametric design.

title Parametric design strategies for the generation of creative designs
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 12 - no. 3, 263-282
summary As one of the emerging Computer-Aided Design (CAD) technologies for digital design and visualisation in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) domain, parametric design potentially offers an innovative way of generating new design solutions. Despite this potential, design strategies associated with algorithmic scripting are not well understood. This paper provides a comprehensive understanding of individual design strategies supporting creative solutions in parametric design, using the combined application of protocol analysis and Consensual Assessment Technique (CAT). The article examines the generative and evolutionary aspects of parametric design that play an important role in the generation of creative designs. An in-depth analysis conceptualises designers' parametric design strategies into problem-forwarding strategy and solution-reflecting strategy. The solution-reflecting strategy focusing on the solution space of designing has potential to produce creative solutions by parametric design. A more in-depth understanding of parametric design strategies supports its effective adaptation to better serve the needs of digital design and visualisation in the AEC industry

title Principles of CAD/CAM/CAE Systems
source New York: Addison-Wesley 1999
summary An Introduction to CAD/CAM/CAE is a timely text with coverage of many modern topics, including: rapid prototyping, virtual engineering, NT-based solid modeling systems, and Web-related issues. This book provides balanced coverage of CAD/CAM (with slightly more emphasis on CAD topics) and bonus coverage of computer-aided engineering (CAE). This book's emphasis on the integration of three related disciplines-CAD, CAM, and CAE-makes it a great theoretical introduction to all subjects from geometric representation to the most sophisticated CAE subjects. Many illustrations and references ground the theory in practical examples. The book also features a unique illustration of the whole product development process through a practical case study that gives readers a clear idea how CAD, CAM, and CAE systems are integrated to accelerate the product development process. This book is carefully targeted toward today's students; topics are introduced in a concise, efficient manner, with mathematical terminology that is kept to a minimum. A background in programming, calculus, and matrix and vector algebra is helpful when using this text.
