summary This essay is related to the research project "The immersive experience in 360°: investigation, representation and digital immersion in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the 19th and 20th centuries", developed at PROURB in FAU-UFRJ, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil. This work will investigate the Panorama of Rio de Janeiro looking for memories and historical truths in its context: Which part represents a historical point of view? Which part is invention? How were the city and its landscape represented on the canvas? As the most well-known Rio de Janeiro's panorama, which project was idealized by the Brazilian painter Victor Meirelles de Lima (1832-1903) and the Belgian photo-painter Henri Charles Langerock (1830-1915), it was exhibited in Brussels 1888, Paris 1889, and Rio de Janeiro 1891-1896, with great recognition in all these cities. This paper will explore this Panorama, its initial studies, its landscape and the architecture depicted, newspapers descriptions of its exhibitions, and mainly, distinguishing among memories, historical truths and verisimilitudes. In order to achieve these objectives, digital and analogical systems of representations, sketches and computer graphics techniques, specially, tridimensional models will be developed and applied.

summary As the Web grows in the Education area, the new Information and Communication Technologies have been introduced to improve quality in remote education, and more interaction among students through a collaborative environment that helps the learning process. In architecture, many experiences have occurred among schools, giving their students the opportunity to experience this new reality. Like a virtual “field trip”, students with different cultures and oriented under different methodologies, have the opportunity to be part of an inter-institutional group to design together. The social-history theories of Lev Vygotsky (1896-1934), Russian psychologist that dedicated his life to education, seams to fit the new forms of virtual interaction among students. summary The influence of digital media and information technology on architectural design education and practice is increasingly evident. The practice and learning of architecture is increasingly aided by and dependant on digital media. Digital technologies not only provide new production methods, but also expand our abilities to create, explore, manipulate and compose space. In contemporary design education, there is a continuous demand to deliver new skills in digital media and to rethink architectural design education in the light of the new developments in digital technology. During the academic years 2001-2003, I had the chance to lead the efforts to promote an effective use of digital media for design education at Department of Architecture, Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST). Architectural curriculum at JUST dedicated much time for teaching computing skills. However, in this curriculum, digital media was taught in the form of "software use" education. In this context, digital media is perceived and used mainly as a presentation tool. Furthermore, Computer Aided Architectural Design and architectural design are taught in separate courses without interactions between the two.

summary Surrogate models (SM) present an opportunity for rapid assessment of a building's performance, surpassing the pace of simulation-based methods. Setting up a simulation for a single concept involves defining numerous parameters, disrupting the architect's creative flow due to extended simulation run times. Therefore, this research explores integrating building energy analysis with advanced machine learning techniques to predict heating and cooling loads (KWh/m2) for single and multi-zones in buildings. To generate the dataset, the study adopts a parametric generative workflow, building upon Chou and Bui's (2014) methodology. This dataset encompasses multiple building forms, each with unique topological connections and attributes, ensuring a thorough analysis across varied building scenarios. These scenarios undergo thermal simulation to generate data for machine learning analysis. The study primarily utilizes Random Forest (RF) as a new technique to estimate the heating and cooling loads in buildings, a critical factor in building energy efficiency. Following that, A random search approach is utilized to optimize the hyperparameters, enhancing the robustness and accuracy of the machine learning models employed later in the research. The RF algorithms demonstrate high performance in predicting heating and cooling loads (KWh/m2), contributing to enhanced building energy efficiency. The study underscores the potential of machine learning in optimizing building designs for energy efficiency.

summary Epigraphy in Islamic architecture represented an indispensable element in its conceptual design and structure. Our research investigates this unique role, which epigraphy played in Islamic architecture as a tool singularizing this architecture and the sensuality it inspires inside a building while bestowing on it its particular identity. This how SADEPIG came to being: it is a virtual database regrouping all the information about the monumental epigraphy which date from the Sa‘dian period in Morocco (1527- 1660). The digital corpus of monumental Sa‘dian inscriptions provides also buildings plans, virtual tour within the monument, construction details, information about the identity of patron and builders.

summary Based on a university teaching-research-extension experience in Sao Gonçalo do Baçao (Minas Gerais, Brazil), this article discusses the use of digital technology as a way to expand the virtual, understood as an event in latent state, as a process of problematization and not of problem solving. Three digital interfaces developed with the common goal of encouraging questioning and the exercise of autonomy from different approaches and themes are presented. The interfaces seek to articulate the Flusserian idea of 'responsibility', regarded as the act of responding to others in a way that promotes an opening for people to continue the design process dialogically. In short, the interfaces indicate possibilities provided by digital technologies and exemplify ways in which they might drive processes towards social-spatial transformation.

summary Different criteria need to be considered for optimal strategies in the early design stages of urban developments. Under the influence of climate change, the urban heat island effect (UHI) is a phenomenon that gains importance in the early design stages. Here, different parameters, for instance, vegetation ratio in the city district and building density, play a significant role in the UHI effect. These parameters need to be quantified through different simulation tools for optimal climate adaptation and mitigation measures on the urban district scale. However, not all parameters and their influence are clear to the decision-makers and actors in the early design stages. Hence, we propose a Monte Carlo based sensitivity analysis (SA) and uncertainty analysis (UA) to show the significance of different parameters and quantify them. The SA aims to identify the major influencing parameters, whereas the UA quantifies the effect on the energy performance and indoor thermal comfort of occupants. The workflow is integrated into a collaborative design platform and applied in a case study to support decision-makers in the early design stages for new developments, densification, or refurbishment scenarios.

summary The concepts and applications of Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) have a predominant presence and impact on architectural design innovation and creativity. ASCAAD, in its 6th international conference, invited the learnt society of academics, researchers and professionals to debate the ubiquitous emerging role of CAAD in underpinning innovative design thinking processes and research in design education. The conference theme covered the following issues:  Computational research in design pedagogy and in practice  Intelligent agents, generative and parametric design  Building Information Modeling and Computer-supported design collaboration  Ubiquitous computing and interactive environments  Urban/ City/ regional planning and digital Modeling  Digital tools in design and construction  Mass customization Selected papers have been updated in this publication to reflect the constant quest to balance architectural thinking with operative techniques. It is well acknowledged that the advent of computation and information technology had profoundly altered architectural thinking. Design software and numerical fabrication have recast the role of form giving and shaping environments in architecture and opened up unprecedented opportunities of investigation and links with other scientific domains such as biomimcry, parametric design and modeling of urban and building environments. In this issue authors suggest a continuum between architectural analytical thinking and CAAD systems. Looking at the collaboration between authors of various backgrounds also strengthens this narrative that architecture is expanding beyond its traditional enquiry into historical and theoretical aspects into the world of multi-desciplinarity. It is evident from the diverse publications that CAAD is designed and utilized to expand the architectural pedagogy and practice into initiating and opening up the exploratory grounds of creation and productivity in design.

summary Research highlights that architectural design is a social phenomenon that is underpinned by critical analysis of design precedents and the social interaction between designers including negotiation, collaboration and communication. CAAD systems are continuously developing as essential design tools in formulating and developing ideas. Researchers such as (Rosenman, Gero and Oxman 1992) have suggested suggest that knowledge based systems can be integrated with CAAD systems to provide design knowledge that would enable recalling design precedents that maybe linked to the design constraints. Currently CAAD systems are user centric being focused on architects rather than the end product. The systems provide limited assistance in the production of innovative design. Furthermore, the attention of the designers of knowledge based systems is providing a repository rather than a system that is capable to initiate innovation. Most of the CAAD systems have web communication tools that enable designers to communicate their design ideas with colleagues and partners in business. However, none of these systems have the capability to capture useful knowledge from the design negotiations. Students of the third to fifth year at College of Architecture, University of Dammam were surveyed and interviewed to find out how far design tools, communications and resources would impact the production of innovative design projects. The survey results show that knowledge extracted from design negotiations would impact the innovative design outcome. It highlights also that present design precedents are not very helpful and design negotiations between students, tutors and other students are not documented thus fully incorporated into the design scheme. The paper argues that the future CAAD systems should be capable to recognize innovative design precedents, and incorporate knowledge that is resulted from design negotiations. This would help students to gain a critical mass of knowledge that would underpin informed design decisions.

summary GENE_ARCH is a Generative Design System that combines Pareto Genetic Algorithms with an advanced building energy simulation engine. This work explores its integration with a Shape Grammar, acting as GENE_ARCH’s shape generation module. The urban patio house typology is readdressed in a contemporary context, both by improving its energy-effi ciency standards, and by rethinking its role in the genesis of high-density urban areas, while respecting its specifi c spatial organization and cultural grounding. Field work was carried out in Marrakesh, surveying a number of patio houses which became the Corpus of Design, from where a Shape Grammar was extracted. The computational implementation of the patio house grammar was done within GENE_ARCH. The resulting program was able to generate new, alternative patio houses designs that were more energy effi cient, while respecting the traditional rules captured from the analysis of existing houses. After the computational system was fully implemented, it was possible to complete different sets of experiments. The first experiments kept more restrained rules, thus generating new designs that closer resembled the existing ones. The progressive relaxation of rules and constraints allowed for a larger number of variations to emerge. Analysis of energy results provide insight into the main patterns resulting from the evolutionary search processes, namely in terms of form factors of generated solutions, and urban densities achieved.

summary This paper describes a project within the authors’ ongoing research in the field of Generative Design. The work is based on the premise that computer-aided design (CAD) should evolve beyond its current limitation of one-way interaction, and become a dynamic, intelligent, multi-user environment that encourages creativity and actively supports the evolution of individual, mass-customized designs which exhibit common features. The authors describe this idea by illustrating the implementation of a research project, which explores the notions of mass-customization in design by using evolutionary and parametric methods to generate families of simple objects, in our case a door handle. The project examines related approaches using both complex CAD/CAM packages (CADDS, CATIA) and a proprietary software tool for evolutionary design. The paper first gives a short historical and philosophical background to the work, then describes the technical and algorithmic requirements, and concludes with the implementations of the project.

summary The process of architects exploring the program with clients often take place through face-to-face oral discussions and visual aids, such as photos and sketches. Our research focuses on two communication mediums: language and sketch. We employ machine learning techniques to assist architects and clients to improve their communication and reduce misunderstandings. We have trained a Naive Bayesian Classifier machine, the language assistant (LA), to classify architectural vocabularies with associations to design requirements. In addition, we have trained a Generative Adversarial Network, the sketch assistant (SA), to generate photo quality images based on architects' sketches. The language assistant and sketch assistant combined can facilitate architect-client communication during the pre-design stage.

summary This study aims to investigate the stages involved in document creation during the architecture and design project phases, through the integration of the Briefing with the assistance of ChatGPT-3.5, with the purpose of assessing the relevance, correspondence, and coherence of data generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI). The research involved the use of two distinct prompts: one featuring a more generic nature, and the other defined by a higher level of detail. It was found that the generic prompt yielded innovative options – not foreseen in the reference sources –, however with lower correspondence. The detailed request was limited to the predefined structure, resulting in greater correspondence and partial consistency with the parameters established in the reference literature. It was possible to conclude that, while AI automates the briefing stages, the input and critical analysis of the generated text require substantial subject knowledge for consistent results.

summary The research presents an application of HBIM to the recovery process and design, which allows to highlight some potentialities and criticalities of what has become an important instrument in the documentation and conservation of architectural heritage. The object of the research is the Temple di Bacco, built by Lord Girmthorpe as his final resting place and located within the gardens of Villa Cimbrone, Ravello (SA).The survey has presented several difficulties due to the particular configuration of the site, very steep, with very limited space around the object. If on the one hand the TLS obvious to the lack of edges of cylindrical objects, on the other hand it poses problems for the tangency of the scan points. The Scan to BIM methodology has proven to be effective and has allowed to overcome the difficulties associated with the conformation of the artefact and of the site, in the study of the analyzed object. In conclusion, some assessments and results are reported, aimed at sharing and defining strategies and methodologies of scientific validity regarding the application of the HBIM model to a process of recovery and consolidation of an existing building object.

summary Location-based mobile applications have been a rising theme for academics in the field of urbanism and in urban and transportation, because of the potential of transformation they might bring to the urban landscape (De Souza e Silva, 2013). One of the possibilities we study here is to observe social encounters fostered by commuting rides. In this paper, we try to examine the practice from the broad perspective of estimating the environmental benefits, in a context where digital information technology is wielded to address problems old and new (Townsend, 2014). This paper aims to analyze the potential of transformations that new ICTs bring to urban mobility, using as case study the official ridesharing system of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, the Carona? project. The system was developed focusing on the reduction of the number of motorized trips to the University, as well as the amount of CO2 generated by them. Here we analyze the dynamics of ridesharing, using the system data, and also try to observe the role it may play towards the promotion of integration in the UFRJ community.
