summary The purpose of the present work is to virtually rebuild the city of san juan that was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1944. From an audiovisual, multimedial approach, it tries to be a contribution to the recovering of the collective memory. Through virtual reality techniques, a three dimensional model of the city central area has been built, as it was before the earthquake. It has been achieved a multidisciplinary, open model that sums up a great deal of information and allows: 1.) From a pedagogic approach: an opened window to new ways of knowledgement transmission, through visual virtual information. The virtual rebuilt has been reconsidered as a pedagogic and communicational tool; 2.) From a historic and morphologic approach: to obtain multiple readings and to revolution the way to manage categories in different analysis scales; 3.) In the future, the model would allow the possibility of an unlimited improvement by working in different scales. Furthermore it would allow to add information, an so to increase the research area or to go deeper into details not only in the phenomenological dimension of the objects but also in their logic significant dimension.

summary This paper will discuss an unconventional methodology for using physical and digital media strategies interchangeably in a tightly structured framework for the integration of environmental control systems (ECS) principles into a third year design studio. An eight-step methodology enabled architectural explorations of rich tactile and luminous engagement. The principles that provide the foundation for these integrative strategies between a design studio and building technology course, spring from a systematic approach that follows the tradition of the Bauhaus principles (e.g., Albers, Moholy-Nagy, Kandinsky and Kepes) of craftsmanship and visual perception.A series of intense short workshops focused on day lighting, electric lighting, and skin vocabulary to lead students to consider these components as part of their form-making inspiration. Examples of student work and their feedback on this methodology process will show how the exercises were linked to allow for a clear design progression.

summary San Juan city was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1944. The present work intends to show a series of readings about urban space of the pre 44 city. Our purpose is to find out the variation of its qualities at different levels of formatization of the spaces; and the tales of constants that could be operating in the symbolic construction of the city, by the inhabitant’s mental representations. To describe the missing city, to rebuild it as a digital patrimony in order to understand its identity features, means to search for into its history , qualities and uses of its places and shapes. With a new video which resumes the results of the digital reconstruction of the city, the present research intends to share our questions about the ruptures and mutations at the urban level in order to build a possible answer from the urban virtuality.

summary Throughout the history of art the position of the artist towards his goals and his product has been constantly redefined. The two opposing views in the above quotation, those of . German Romanticism and Classicism, are typical of the temperamental nature of the state of the art. Today's artist uses intuition as well as reason in his creative work. Similarly, whether we consider the architect an artist or a scientist, he is constantly required to use his intellectal as well as emotional resources while designing. I do not intend to endorse an attitude for the architect which condones only one of those sources at the expense of the other. Today there i s a real opportunity for understanding the reasoning used in problem-solving and applying these to the area of architectural design, the opportunity arises due to a large amount of knowledge accumulated in the area of ' human problem-solving, methods of anlayzing and developing models for human problem solving behavior. The most frequently refered points of departure in this area are Simon's pioneering work in the area of decision-making (1944) and Newell, Shaw and Simon's work on "heuristics" (1957).

summary While patterns have a spotty history in architecture, their definitions and uses in other fields offer new possibilities for design. This paper examines those definitions and uses—including theories put forward by architectural theorist, Christopher Alexander; art educator, Gyorgy Kepes; chemist, Ilya Prigogine; and anthropologist, Gregory Bateson. Of particular interest is the shift from eternal, essential, universal, and fundamental patterns to fleeting, superficial, specific, and incidental versions. While endemic to many contemporary architectural practices, this multifaceted view of patterns was anticipated by Bateson, who saw them as agents of evolution and learning. His desire to combine redundancy and noise offers architects new ways to understand patterns and use them to link form and information, matter and thought.

Wassily Kandinsky developed a method of analytical drawingthat breaks a still life composition into diagrammatic forces to express tension and geometry. Theseschematic diagrams provide a method for students to examine and analyze the implications of elementplacements in space (Bermudez, Neiman 1997). Gyorgy Kepes's Language of Vision provides a primerfor learning basic design principles. Kepes argued that the perception of a visual image needs aprocess of organization. According to Kepes, the experience of an image is "a creative act ofintegration". All of these principles provide the framework for the studio investigation.The quarter started with a series of intense short workshops that used an interchangeable use of digitaland physical media to focus on ECS topics such as day lighting, electric lighting, and skin vocabulary tolead students to consider these components as part of their form-making inspiration.In integrating ECS components with the design studio, an nine-step methodology was established toprovide students with a compelling and tangible framework for design:Examples of student work will be presented for the two times this course was offered (2001/02) to showhow exercises were linked to allow for a clear design progression.

summary Digital media are transforming the practice and teaching of design. Information technologies offer not only better production and rendering tools but also the ability to model, manipulate, and to understand designing in new ways. This paper outlines a thirteen-step methodology used in a seminar that teaches design students how to see, think, and form space using both digital and physical media.

The paper describes a systematic approach that follows the tradition of the Bauhaus principles of craftsmanship and visual perception. Precedents are drawn from the use of light, color and texture in the visual arts such as the glass collage assemblages of Albers and Moholy-Nagy’s camera-less photogram. References are also drawn from Kandinsky’s diagrammatic analysis of still life drawings and Kepes’s idea of the language of vision.

The focus of the paper is how digital media and physical material can be used interchangeably as instruments in a design environment. The investigation centers on developing teaching methods for seeing, thinking and making of spatial design. A sequence of experimental exercises stimulates students’ intuition and powers of analytical observation. This systematic approach helps students explore how space can be perceived and informed by using types of media that are significantly different in their nature. The methodology explores the concerns and techniques of making and exploring space through the use of light, shadow, motion, color and transparency.

summary Responsive architecture is one of the growing areas of computational design that is not getting adequate attention in CAAD curricula. A pedagogical approach to designing responsive systems requires more than the typical knowledge, tools or skill sets in architectural design studios. This paper presents a framework for integrating responsive and kinetic systems in the architectural design studio. The framework builds on findings of two design studios conducted at The American University in Cairo, Egypt. In both studios, students were asked to design elements of responsive architecture that work towards the development of their projects. The paper demonstrates the process and outcomes of both studios. It then demonstrates how concepts of integrated project delivery are incorporated to propose a framework that engages students in designing, fabricating and operating responsive systems in different phases of the design process. A discussion follows regarding dynamics of design studio in light of the proposed framework.

summary AUTOMATED COST ANALYSIS OF CONCEPT DESIGN BIM MODELS Interoperability: BIM models and cost models This paper introduces the automated cost analysis developed for the General Services Administration (GSA) and the analysis results of a case study involving a concept design courthouse BIM model. The purpose of this study is to investigate interoperability issues related to integrating design and analysis tools; specifically BIM models and cost models. Previous efforts to generate cost estimates from BIM models have focused on developing two necessary but disjoint processes: 1) extracting accurate quantity take off data from BIM models, and 2) manipulating cost analysis results to provide informative feedback. Some recent efforts involve developing detailed definitions, enhanced IFC-based formats and in-house standards for assemblies that encompass building models (e.g. US Corps of Engineers). Some commercial applications enhance the level of detail associated to BIM objects with assembly descriptions to produce lightweight BIM models that can be used by different applications for various purposes (e.g. Autodesk for design review, Navisworks for scheduling, Innovaya for visual estimating, etc.). This study suggests the integration of design and analysis tools by means of managing all building data in one shared repository accessible to multiple domains in the AEC industry (Eastman, 1999; Eastman et al., 2008; authors, 2010). Our approach aims at providing an integrated platform that incorporates a quantity take off extraction method from IFC models, a cost analysis model, and a comprehensive cost reporting scheme, using the Solibri Model Checker (SMC) development environment. Approach As part of the effort to improve the performance of federal buildings, GSA evaluates concept design alternatives based on their compliance with specific requirements, including cost analysis. Two basic challenges emerge in the process of automating cost analysis for BIM models: 1) At this early concept design stage, only minimal information is available to produce a reliable analysis, such as space names and areas, and building gross area, 2) design alternatives share a lot of programmatic requirements such as location, functional spaces and other data. It is thus crucial to integrate other factors that contribute to substantial cost differences such as perimeter, and exterior wall and roof areas. These are extracted from BIM models using IFC data and input through XML into the Parametric Cost Engineering System (PACES, 2010) software to generate cost analysis reports. PACES uses this limited dataset at a conceptual stage and RSMeans (2010) data to infer cost assemblies at different levels of detail. Functionalities Cost model import module The cost model import module has three main functionalities: generating the input dataset necessary for the cost model, performing a semantic mapping between building type specific names and name aggregation structures in PACES known as functional space areas (FSAs), and managing cost data external to the BIM model, such as location and construction duration. The module computes building data such as footprint, gross area, perimeter, external wall and roof area and building space areas. This data is generated through SMC in the form of an XML file and imported into PACES. Reporting module The reporting module uses the cost report generated by PACES to develop a comprehensive report in the form of an excel spreadsheet. This report consists of a systems-elemental estimate that shows the main systems of the building in terms of UniFormat categories, escalation, markups, overhead and conditions, a UniFormat Level III report, and a cost breakdown that provides a summary of material, equipment, labor and total costs. Building parameters are integrated in the report to provide insight on the variations among design alternatives.

summary The Saudi government is taking the initiative to modernise the country and address critical challenges. One of its primary goals is to relieve the housing deficit. One of the challenges in supplying the houses is that potential inhabitants have denied and refused to accept them due to their design failing to meet their demands. Furthermore, the government suffers from providing high-quality housing in line with people’s needs because only a few enterprises can meet the client’s needs, but only at the price of lengthy planning and building times, in addition to increased construction expenses. This research aims to propose a mass customisation design-to-fabrication workflow, which targets environmental optimisation, reduction of construction time and reduced cost and incorporates client involvement. Our research method includes conducting a survey with Saudi Arabian architecture firms to collect data about contemporary clients’ needs, analysing and reviewing mass-customisation tools & techniques, developing a bespoke algorithm capable of mass-customising housing and evaluating the algorithm through design experiments. Our findings present the advantages and challenges of our tool as well as a shape grammar of mass customised floor plan solutions.

summary This paper presents a method for organising urban data inside the CAD environment into a hierarchical structure, which promotes the ease of transferring information between all available urban elements, from streets to buildings passing by the plots and blocks. This is done using parametric methods that map the urban data using the available CAD and GIS records. Finally, the paper presents a couple of example scenarios where such methods are most needed and how much they could facilitate more detailed and complex data to be accessed, compared, and analysed.

summary This paper presents research on the design challenges in refugee camps where “temporary" shelters often evolve into permanent homes and larger communities. These transformations convey an informal design process, a phenomenon evident in Irbid Camp for Palestinian refugees in Jordan. To study this site and design process in detail, shape rules based on the transformation of ten individual housing units are developed, with consideration of area and growth limitations inside the refugee camp. The Irbid Camp Grammar reveals a modular, grid-based logic at play in the incremental and spontaneous design of refugee housing from temporary shelters to permanent homes. This study is one step forward in helping us understand how formalizing this growth logic can contribute to the design of better emergency housing interventions in the future.

title Generic representations : an approach for modelling procedural and declarative knowledge of building types in architectural design

summary The building type is a knowledge structure that is recognised as an important element in the architectural design process. For an architect, the type provides information about norms, layout, appearance, etc. of the kind of building that is being designed. Questions that seem unresolved about (computational) approaches to building types are the relationship between the many kinds of instances that are generally recognised as belonging to a particular building type, the way a type can deal with varying briefs (or with mixed use), and how a type can accommodate different sites. Approaches that aim to model building types as data structures of interrelated variables (so-called ‘prototypes’) face problems clarifying these questions. The research work at hand proposes to investigate the role of knowledge associated with building types in the design process. Knowledge of the building type must be represented during the design process. Therefore, it is necessary to find a representation which supports design decisions, supports the changes and transformations of the design during the design process, encompasses knowledge of the design task, and which relates to the way architects design. It is proposed in the research work that graphic representations can be used as a medium to encode knowledge of the building type. This is possible if they consistently encode the things they represent; if their knowledge content can be derived, and if they are versatile enough to support a design process of a building belonging to a type. A graphic representation consists of graphic entities such as vertices, lines, planes, shapes, symbols, etc. Establishing a graphic representation implies making design decisions with respect to these entities. Therefore it is necessary to identify the elements of the graphic representation that play a role in decision making. An approach based on the concept of ‘graphic units’ is developed. A graphic unit is a particular set of graphic entities that has some constant meaning. Examples are: zone, circulation scheme, axial system, and contour. Each graphic unit implies a particular kind of design decision (e.g. functional areas, system of circulation, spatial organisation, and layout of the building). By differentiating between appearance and meaning, it is possible to define the graphic unit relatively shape-independent. If a number of graphic representations have the same graphic units, they deal with the same kind of design decisions. Graphic representations that have such a specifically defined knowledge content are called ‘generic representations.’ An analysis of over 220 graphic representations in the literature on architecture results in 24 graphic units and 50 generic representations. For each generic representation the design decisions are identified. These decisions are informed by the nature of the design task at hand. If the design task is a building belonging to a building type, then knowledge of the building type is required. In a single generic representation knowledge of norms, rules, and principles associated with the building type are used. Therefore, a single generic representation encodes declarative knowledge of the building type. A sequence of generic representations encodes a series of design decisions which are informed by the design task. If the design task is a building type, then procedural knowledge of the building type is used. By means of the graphic unit and generic representation, it is possible to identify a number of relations that determine sequences of generic representations. These relations are: additional graphic units, themes of generic representations, and successive graphic units. Additional graphic units defines subsequent generic representations by adding a new graphic unit. Themes of generic representations defines groups of generic representations that deal with the same kind of design decisions. Successive graphic units defines preconditions for subsequent or previous generic representations. On the basis of themes it is possible to define six general sequences of generic representations. On the basis of additional and successive graphic units it is possible to define sequences of generic representations in themes. On the basis of these sequences, one particular sequence of 23 generic representations is defined. The particular sequence of generic representations structures the decision process of a building type. In order to test this assertion, the particular sequence is applied to the office building type. For each generic representation, it is possible to establish a graphic representation that follows the definition of the graphic units and to apply the required statements from the office building knowledge base. The application results in a sequence of graphic representations that particularises an office building design. Implementation of seven generic representations in a computer aided design system demonstrates the use of generic representations for design support. The set is large enough to provide additional weight to the conclusion that generic representations map declarative and procedural knowledge of the building type.

summary Interactive architecture occurs in buildings when part of the building engages in exchange of information with the user, in such a way that the interactive system adjusts it's assumptions about the user's needs and desires. Acquiring the user's needs and desires is no trivial task. Currently there are no techniques that will reliably make such assertions. Building a system that unobtrusively monitors the inhabitant seems to be a tall order, and making the system ask the user all the time is very distracting for the user. An alternative option has become available however: personal wearables are increasingly monitoring the user. Therefore it suffices that the interactive system of the building gets in touch with those wearables, rather than duplicating the sensing function of the wearables. The enabling technology for wearables is Internet of Things, which connects physical objects (smart objects) on a virtual level, and Cloud Computing, which provides a scalable storage environment for wearables and smart objects. In this paper we outline the implications of the convergence of these three technologies in the light of interactive architecture.

title Experiential Learning of Structural Systems - Comparison of design-based and experiment-based pedagogies

summary This research aims to compare two experiential learning methods’ effectiveness for (1) a deeper understanding of structural behaviour, and (2) skills to design architectural forms that are structurally informed. A course was planned to investigate the effect of the type and order of the two teaching units: (1) guided experiments on a parametric design model, and (2) parametric design of a tower and custom experiments using Grasshopper and Karamba. Results indicate that the group that started with the experiments learned to ask the relevant questions by experimenting with the appropriate parameters that helped them to find the structural principles and apply them during their design phase. The group that started with the design were lost in the structural concepts and in identifying the meaningful parameters to test for. However, after the experiment was completed, this group could make a knowledge transfer. Acquisition of structures knowledge may require the experience of multiple situations while the application of this knowledge may involve selecting the relevant structural experience with the architectural form-finding process. In the future, a proposed experiential learning method will be compared with an instructive learning approach of structural systems for architecture students.

summary The paper presents the outcomes of the experiment being conducted at the Faculty of Architecture in Bialystok, which derives form three main sources: a new course of architectural composition by computer modelling, developed and conducted in Bialystok postrationalisation as a formulation platform for new architectural values and theories, applied by e.g. Bernard Tschumi the idea of new values emergence resulting form a teamwork, when placed in an appropriate environment; It is assumed that the work performed first intuitively, can be later seriously interpreted, and to some extent rationalised, verbalised, described. With no doubt we can state, that in creative parts of architectural activities, very often decision are taken intuitively (form design). So this ‘procedure’ of postrationalisation of intuitively undertaken efforts and results seems to be very important –when trying to explain ideas. This kind of activity is also very important during the first years of architectural education. In case of this experiment, the students’ works from the course of architectural composition are taken as a base and subjects for interpretation, and values research. However, when at first, individual works are being interpreted by their authors, at the latter stage, the teams are to be formed. The aim of the teamwork is to present individual works, analyse them, find common value(s), and represent it (them) in an appropriate, creative way. The ideal environment to perform this work is hypertext based internet, because the non-linearity of team interpretations is unavoidable. On the other hand, the digital input data (computer models) is a very appropriate initial material to be used for hypermedia development. The experiment is to analyse the specific of the following: the self-influence of the group on the individual work ‘qualification’, mutual influence of the team members on their own work interpretation, the influence of the digital non-linear environment on the final outcome definition. The added value of hypertext in architectural groupwork digital performance shall be examined and described. A new value of individualised, though group based, non-linearity of expression will be presented and concluded.

summary Several research projects (Gramazio et al. 2014; Willmann et al. 2015; Helm et al. 2017; Adel et al. 2018; Adel Ahmadian 2020) have investigated the use of automated assembly technologies (e.g., industrial robotic arms) for the fabrication of nonstandard timber structures. Building on these projects, we present a novel and transferable process for the robotic fabrication of bespoke timber subassemblies made of off-the-shelf standard timber elements. A nonstandard timber structure (Figure 2), consisting of four bespoke subassemblies: three vertical supports and a Zollinger (Allen 1999) roof structure, acts as the case study for the research and validates the feasibility of the proposed process.

summary The paper presents an algorithmic modeling tool for segmented timber shell structures made of glued wave-edge CLT plates. The goal is to provide a larger bonding area and thereby higher adhesive strength between plates, especially where a higher tension-resistant capacity is required. In addition to a number of contemporary research for exploring stereotomic modules, the inspiration is taken from the long history of the traditional glued finger joints in carpentry where they are used for providing higher interlocking capacity and adhesive strength. The structural performance of regular and glued finger joints is directly proportional to the bonding area between adjoining elements where they are interlocked and glued. Hence, expanding the shared faces would intrinsically magnify the structural performance of the glued finger joints. The paper presents the modeling method of a material-efficient, grain-informed, and structurally-optimized wedge edge joint system for the multi-shaped shell structures where the wave pattern is chosen for generating smoother fabrication toolpaths compared to any sharp-cornered pattern. The algorithm developed by the authors can efficiently maximize the glue bond by optimizing the wave-edge properties dynamically with respect to the geometric design, material system, and structural analysis within a feedback loop. The wave-edge properties directly affect the material waste and fabrication time and cost; therefore, the production parameters could be directly considered and controlled within the design process. The algorithm is able to produce the structural data model for the direct RFEM structural analysis, and fabrication data for automated production of multitude elements. The paper argues the application possibilities and limitations of the joint system for multi-shaped timber plate shells made of a multitude of geometrically-differentiated timber plates.
