summary Climate challenges faced by cities have their origins in water resources management. The built infrastructure ignores its ecological bases, altering ecosystems and the water cycle. Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) arise as viable alternatives to confront these problems. However, the inconsistent documentation about the systematization and functioning of NBS makes the professionals insecure about their use. New approaches using Virtual Reality (VR) facilitated the visualization and evaluation of the 3D model of a bioretention prototype. We used the headset Oculus Quest 2 and the notebook Predator Helios 300 for VR immersion. The model viewed was produced by the Archicad 26, Twinmotion, Rhinoceros 3D, and Gravity Sketch software. The experience showed that VR is effective for simulating propositive scenarios and as a learning tool in an academic environment, widening the comprehension and functioning of the subjects.

summary Everybody who has read his Gordon Cullen or his Edmund H. Bacon knows that movement has long been recognized as a factor in environmental planning in many ways. For example, in the traditional Japanese promenade garden the importance of movement has always been appreciated. The promenader gains an intense experience of the succession, variation and rhythm of the surrounding scene. The spaces and paths lead him from one stage to another. The spatial structure of the Japanese promenade garden, as well as of traditional Japanese architecture in general, is joined most intensively to time and motion. The environment is in relation to the flow of change in many sense, both concretely and existentially. Taking an example of western urban environment. Here perhaps the most marked sequential spaces are to be found in small medieval, mediterranean towns. Thanks to their organic growth, narrow and winding streets and the emphasis on public squares, most of them provide exciting experiences if the observer is only interested in seeing the townscape from the point of view of movement. There are also examples of this kind of environment in Finland. In old wooden towns like Porvoo and Rauma one can still find varied and rhythmic streetscapes and networks of streets and squares, together with a human scale and an almost timeless atmosphere. One could say that such an opportunity to experience spaces sequentially, or as serial visions, is an important dimension for us, especially as pedestrians. And as Gordon Cullen has shown there is in any urban environment much scope to heighten this experience. For example, by creating a sense of ’entering in’ some place, ’leaving for’, ’moving towards’, ’turning into’, ’walking through’ some place or ’following on’ the flow of spaces. Or, as Edmund H. Bacon has said, the departure point of good town planning should be that the successive towns spaces give rise to a flow of harmonic experiences: present experiences merge with earlier ones and become a step towards a future. Or, again in the words of Donald Appleyard, Kevin Lynch and John R. Myer: “The experience of a city is basically of a moving view, and this is the view we must understand if we wish to reform the look of our cities”.

title Architectural Innovation as an evolutionary process

summary Traditionally in art and architectural history, innovation is treated as a history of ideas of individuals (pioneers), movements and schools. The monograph is in that context one of the most used forms of scientific exercise. History of architecture is then mostly seen as a succession of dominant architectural paradigms imposed by great architectural creators fighting at the beginning against mainstream establishment until they themselves come to be recognised. However, there have been attempts to place architectural innovation and creativity in an evolutionary perspective. Charles Jencks for example, has described the evolution of architectural and art movements according to a diagram inspired by ecological models. Philip Steadman, in his book "The Evolution of Designs. Biological analogy in architecture and the applied arts" (1979), sketches the history of various biological analogies and their impact on architectural theory: the organic, classificatory, anatomical, ecological and Darwinian or evolutionary analogies. This last analogy "explains the design of useful objects and buildings, particularly in primitive society and in the craft tradition, in terms of a sequence of repeated copyings (corresponding to inheritance), with small changes made at each stage ('variations'), which are then subjected to a testing process when the object is put into use ('selection')." However, Steadman has confined his study to a literature survey as the basis of a history of ideas. Since this pioneering work, new developments like Dawkins' concept of memes allow further steps in the field of cultural evolution of architectural innovation. The application of the concept of memes to architectural design has been put forward in a preceding "Generative Art" conference (Daru, 1999), showing its application in a pilot study on the analysis of projects of and by architectural students. This first empirical study is now followed by a study of 'real life' architectural practice. The case taken has a double implication for the evolutionary analogy. It takes a specific architectural innovative concept as a 'meme' and develops the analysis of the trajectory of this meme in the individual context of the designer and at large. At the same time, the architect involved (Eric Vreedenburgh, Archipel Ontwerpers) is knowledgeable about the theory of memetic evolution and is applying a computer tool (called 'Artificial') together with Remko Scha, the authoring computer scientist of the program who collaborates frequently with artists and architects. This case study (the penthouse in Dutch town planning and the application of 'Artificial') shall be discussed in the paper as presented. The theoretical and methodological problems of various models of diffusion of memes shall be discussed and a preliminary model shall be presented as a framework to account for not only Darwinian but also Lamarckian processes, and for individual as well as collective transmission, consumption and creative transformation of memes.

summary In the fabrication of organic free-form shapes in architecture one is constantly faced with specifi c planning and design challenges. This paper examines these problems as well as possible solutions for the design of a completed and built prototype using the example of an organically shaped pavilion made of glass fi bre reinforced plastic modules. The paper describes which adjustments to the original design were required to take the step from “digital physicality” to “physical digitality” to realize a constructive and economically successful implementation. The solutions discussed combine modern digital software methods such as parametric design with innovative 3D modelling principles.

summary Many settlements like the fishermen’s habitat have organically developed and embody the complex relation between land characteristics, functional activities and social aspirations. However, the recent rehabilitation and planning projects, constrained by technical and inscriptional rigidities, have become relatively fixed, formal and monotonous. This research attempts to harness and integrate some of the qualities of organic design process into computer aided design. The two complementary fields of Shape Grammar and Genetic algorithm have been converged for this purpose.

summary Cul-de-sacs are examined together with the urban reading in Siverek. Studying cul-de-sacs is instrumental to understand the morphology of Islamic cities. Cul-de-sacs provide a buffer zone between main roads and houses. For this reason, both the privacy phenomenon, which is one of the important issues for Islam, and the safe space need of the residents are important spatial elements. Until 1968, the city of Siverek developed organically within a compact texture of narrow and curvilinear streets, open courtyards, and a adjacent high-walled residences. In this texture, many semi-private cul-de-sacs have an organic form, which is one of the critical spatial elements of the city. Residential walls or courtyard walls form the natural line of traditional streets. In this study, typological analyses of cul-de-sacs were made, and form grammar, a productive method used to analyze architectural language, is included. It aims to examine the relationship between residential settlement and street using the data set created with shape grammars and to make urban propositions for neighbourhood structures in the context of a cul-de-sac using L-systems in the next step. Some parameters have been determined in forming cul-de-sacs that form the urban texture. These parameters were transferred to the model using digital tools. A method thought to be used in urban production has been put forward. The most important reference of this method is dead-end streets.

title The Language of the Prairie : Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie Houses

summary The following parametric shape grammar generates the compositional forms and specifies the function zones of Frank Lloyd Wright's prairie-style houses. The establishment of a fireplace is the key to the definition of the prairie-style house. Around this fireplace, functionally distinguished Froebelean-type blocks are recursively added and interpenetrated to from the basic compositions from which elaborated prairie-style houses are derived. The grammar is based on a corpus of eleven houses from the Winslow house, the evolutionary precursor of the style, to the Robie house, considered by many as the culmination of the style. Much has been written about prairie-style houses - their balance, their debt to Beaux Arts and Japanese design traditions, and their organic qualities. However, such descriptions do not explicitly inform us as to how prairie-style houses are constructed, and consequently provide little help in designing new members of this style. The power of a grammar, such as the one given here, is that it establishes a recursive structure from which new designs can be constructed. Three new prairie houses generated by the grammar as well as step-by-step generation of one of these designs are shown

summary The growth of urban settlements is a phenomenon on the rise. It is expected that more than 70% of the people will live in urban settlements by 2050. To be able to tackle and embrace this growth, we need alternative tools that help us to face these challenges. On this framework, this proposal aims to raise the paradigm of how the information can be gathered and used to equilibrate urban systems in terms of planning concerning the distribution of resources. To achieve this goal, the exchange of data through an organic system of biochemical interaction network is proposed.

summary In the modern urbanization process, urban planners create rules to define urban form and composition of blocks which are greatly impacted by the road network. This research paper proposes a "city generator", as an urban design toolkit for urban designers to make prototypes of large new town planning and reimagination of city generation. The generator aims to translate planning regulations into three-dimensional urban form and provide users with efficient and intuitive design iterations. Moreover, our generator emphasizes consistency in generation across scales. From a single block to a district, they can be produced in one operation without losing details. Finally, the generator provides a great degree of freedom for users to manipulate, including three aspects - road generation, density mapping and building form. Because of the flexibility of input parameters, generated models can be a rigid urban grid or an organic pattern, which can highly satisfy urban designer's expectations and imagination.

summary Despite, the innovation of additive manufacturing (AM) technology, and in spite of the existence of natural bio-materials offering notable mechanical properties, materials used for AM are not necessarily more sustainable than materials used in traditional manufacturing. Furthermore, potential material savings may be partially overshadowed by the relative toxicity of the material and binders used for AM during fabrication and post-fabrication processes, as well as the energy usage necessary for the production and processing workflow. Soil as a building material offers a cheap, sustainable alternative to non-biodegradable material systems, and new developments in earth construction show how earthen buildings can create light, progressive, and sustainable structures. Nevertheless, existing large-scale earthen construction methods can only produce highly simplified shapes with rough detailing. This research proposes to use robotic additive manufacturing processes to overcome current limitations of constructing with earth, supporting complex three-dimensional geometries, and the creation of novel organic composites. More specifically the research focuses on robotic binder-jetting with granular bio-composites and non-toxic binding agents such as hydrogels. This paper is divided into two main sections: (1) biodegradable material system, and (2) multi-move robotic process, and describes the most crucial fabrication parameters such as compaction pressure, density of binders, deposition strategies and toolpath planning as well as identifying the architectural implications of using this novel biodegradable fabrication process. The combination of soil and hydrogel as building material shows the potential of a fully reversible construction process for architectural components and foresees its potential full-scale architectural implementations.

summary As Chinese cities entering a so-called organic renewal era, building projects runs with much more constraints from high-density and high-rise surroundings. Such a situation makes the technical review in any urban planning bureau time-consuming and error-prone, which conflicts with the developers profits and citizens rights. This study introduces a preliminary system being developed for the planning bureau of Huangpu District, Shanghai. It has covered 21 code items among 44 computational ones of the local planning codes last year, which automatically generates technical reviews upon developers submissions. Due to the feasible level of BIM application in domestic projects, a set of strategic approaches, such as the standardization of CAD drawings and the reconstruction of an internal building information model, are adopted rather than developing the system on any BIM platform directly. Two examples of technical reviews about distance-checking between buildings and length-checking of facades are demonstrated, in which officers reached confidential judgments in seconds rather than several days conventionally.

summary With the deterioration of urban environment gradually in these decades, the demand for improving the outdoor thermal environment is increasing. The traditional architecture and urban planning contain abundant climate responding strategy, while current studies about it are still insufficient. Furthermore, many researches had profound results on how different urban design parameters would impact outdoor thermal comfort, but only a few of them could achieve an effective transformation into a practical scenario. Thus, this paper attempts to present the impact of different traditional urban form, which is extracted from different neighborhoods with arcade street in south China, on the outdoor thermal environment, through field measurements and climatic simulation with Envi-met. Moreover, these different complex urban forms were transferred into a simplified form with uniform character and simulating based on the same boundary condition. Comparing the SVF (Sky View Factor) and PET (Physiological Equivalent Temperature) of each point, the organic urban form would lead better thermal environment than others on the main road. On the other hand, the SVF of a point is not the only one aspect of its PET, which related with the form of urban geometry as well.

summary This paper discusses the potential of a spatial microsimulation-based decision support system for policy analysis. The system can be used to describe current conditions and issues in neighbourhoods, predict future trends in the composition and health of neighbourhoods and conduct modelling and predictive analysis to measure the likely impact of policy interventions at the local level. A large dynamic spatial micro-simulation model is being constructed for the population of Leeds (approximately 715,000 individuals) based on spatial microsimulation techniques in conjunction with a range of data, including 2001 Census data for Output Areas and sample data from the British Household Panel Survey. The project has three main aims as follows: (i) to develop a static microsimulation model to describe current conditions in Leeds; (ii) to enable the performance of ‘What if?’ analysis on a range of policy scenarios; and (iii) to develop a dynamic microsimulation model to predict future conditions in Leeds under different policy scenarios. The paper reports progress in meeting the above aims and outlines the associated difficulties and data issues. One of the significant advantages of the spatial microsimulation approach adopted by this project is that it enables the user to query any combination of variables that is deemed desirable for policy analysis. The paper will illustrate the software tool being developed in the context of this project that is capable of carrying out queries of this type and of mapping their results. The decision support tool is being developed to support policy-makers concerned with urban regeneration and neighbourhood renewal.

summary The paper is a follow-up to earlier work investigating the research hypothesis that Virtual Reality (VR) is nowadays a maturetechnology, suitable for communicating planning ideas. A work in progress involving the redesign of two squares within the urbanfabric of a deprived Athenian neighbourhood is presented. A VR model of existing and proposed layouts was constructed, focusingon accuracy of visualisation, ease of navigation, online spatialized commenting mechanism and ease of access. User groups weresupported with appropriate training—researchers had the opportunity to observe the reactions of people and deliver questionnairesthat help identify problem areas related to technophobia, disbelief, past knowledge, communication skills, understanding of thevisualisation system used, usability of the navigation system as well as the commenting mechanism. Gender and social exclusionare key issues in this particular multicultural neighbourhood. Collecting demographic data on all participants (age, sex, educationlevel, employment, marital status, etc.) during the commenting process enables a series of analyses testing the ways the system isused.

summary The spatial distribution of urban commercial spaces significantly impacts the overall efficiency and vibrancy of adjacent neighbourhoods. As such, it is an important factor to consider during urban development. This study aims to examine the patterns of impact between commercial distributions and neighbourhood dynamics in a residential neighbourhood, based on the case study of a highly populated, thriving commercial, and culturally rich area situated in Mong Kok, Hong Kong. In this research, a series of numeric evaluations and statistical analyses of liveability and vibrancy metrics are presented, uncovering the tension created by existing commercial forms and local living patterns. This research started with multi-dimensional data mining, such as accessing planning data using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), perception data using Street View Images (SVI), and business performance data from Google; secondly, analysing the data via machine learning (ML) algorithm and statistical correlation to identify correlations overlaid with a mapping of spaces of measurable characteristics. summary We question the recent practices of conventional and participatory urban design approaches and offer a middle approach by exploring computational design tools in the design system. On the one hand, the top-down urban planning approaches investigate urban form as a holistic matter which only can be calibrated by urban professionals. These approaches are not able to offer enough information to the end users to predict the urban form. On the other hand, the bottom-up urban design approaches cannot visualise predicted urban scenarios, and most often the design decisions stay as general assumptions. We developed and tested a parametric design platform combines both approaches where all the stakeholders can participate and visualise multiple urban scenarios in real-time feedback. Parametric design along with CIM modelling system has influenced urban designers for a new endeavour in urban design. This paper presents a methodology to generate and visualise urban form. We present a novel decision-making platform that combines city level and local neighbourhood data to aid participatory urban design decisions. The platform allows for stakeholder collaboration and engagement in complex urban design processes.

summary Sense-of-the-City was a project that was executed in the city centre of Eindhoven using mobile phones with GPS. Ten persons carried this equipment during the working day for a period of one week. While carrying their route was traced and projected on a map that could be viewed on the internet. The citizens were asked to pictures of places of interest. These pictures are uploaded to the server and attached to the route. Later on text can be added to each picture through the website. All participants showed a high level of engagement in the project. Although the logbooks of the routes that were created on the web provided very personal insights, it was very hard to draw conclusions from these data.

summary In this study a neighborhood unit which contains 700 dwelling of 6 different types is planned in Ankara- TURKEY. The site is at the outside of the boundaries of the main city and it is designed with regard toall daily facilities exept the workplace. This case study is limited to neighborhood units of 3500 persons and incorporates a kindergarden, primary school, health center, shopping center, playgrounds, playfieldand library within the housing area. The proposed settlement is planned or the middle, and uppermiddle socio-economic classes. The housing project provides its users 6 types of dwellings for their choice: 2 from the houses and 4 from the appartment blocks. They can decide the most suitable typeconsidering the finance and use. The houses are clustered together to encourage social and economical relation of the people living in them.

summary In the international student-project "European Environmental Campus 91 TU Delft Dordrecht" 20 students from 13 European countries worked in september 1991, during three weeks on "EcologicalSketches for the Island of Dordrecht". They worked on four different scales: the region isle of Dordt / the district Stadspolders / the neighbourhood I the house and the block. The environmentaltheme's Energy, Water, Traffic & Noise, Landscape & Soil were together with spatial analyses combined with the different scales. This combination was organised following the scheme mentioned below. The characters stand for the students. During the first period they worked in research groups, during the last period more in design groups. For instance: student L works in the beginning with the students B, G and Q in the research group water. In the last period sheworks with K, M, N and 0 in the design group Neighbourhood. Those students worked earlier in the other research-groups and contribute now in the design-group their thematic environmental knowledge. The results were presented to the Dordrecht council, officials and press. In the next project in september and october 1993 we started earlier with the design groups. Ten Dutch and ten "Erasmus" students worked for six weeks on proposals for the Vinex location Wateringenthe Hague. Each morning they worked in the research groups each afternoon in the design groups. The research groups used the EcoDesign Tools, small applications in Excel on Apple Macintoshto quantify the environmental pressure.
