title The Pleated Cape: From the Mass-Standardization of Levittown to Mass Customization Today

summary In the 1950’s, the Levitts put mass-production and the reverse assembly line into use in the building of thousands of single-family houses. However, the lack of variation that made their construction process so successful ultimately produced a mundane suburban landscape of sameness. While there were many attempts to differentiate these Levitt Cape Cods, none matched the ingenuity of their original construction process. The notion of mass-customization has been heavily theorized since the 1990’s, first appearing in the field of management and ultimately finding its way into the field of architecture. Greg Lynn used mass-customization in his design for the Embryological House in which thousands of unique houses could be generated using biological rules of differentiation (Lynn 1999). Other industries have embraced the premise that computer-numerically-controlled technologies allow for the production of variation, though it has not been thoroughly studied in architecture. While digital fabrication has been integral in the realization of several high-profile projects, the notion of large-scale mass-customization in the spec-housing market has yet to become a reality. Through the execution of an addition to a Cape Cod-style house, we examine the intersection between prefabricated standardized panels and digital fabrication to produce a mass-customized approach to housing design. Through illustrations and a detailed description of our design process, we will show how digital fabrication technologies allow for customization of mass produced products.

summary Within computational environmental design (CED), different Machine Learning (ML) models are gaining ground. They aim for time efficiency by automating simulation and speeding up environmental performance feedback. This study suggests an approach that enhances not the optimization but the generative aspect of environmentally driven ML processes in architectural design. We follow Stan Allen's (2009) idea of 'field conditions' as a bottom-up phenomenon according to which form and space emerge from local invisible and dynamic connections. By employing parametric modeling, environmental analysis data, and conditional Generative Adversarial Networks [cGAN] we introduce a generative approach in design that reverses the typical design process of going from formal interpretation to analysis and encourages the emergence of spatial configurations with embedded environmental intelligence. We call it Intensive-driven Environmental Design Computation [IEDC], and we employ it in a case study on a residential building typology encountered in the Mediterranean. The paper describes the process, emphasizing dataset preparation as the stage where the logic of field conditions is established. The proposed research differentiates from cGAN models that offer automatic environmental performance predictions to one that spatial predictions stem from dynamic fields.

summary This paper introduces a framework that addresses the limitations of form-first design approaches in contemporary architectural practice, where digital design and comput- er-aided design (CAD) tools often neglect material realities. The framework aims to bridge the gap between form-based and material-centric approaches by proposing a digital design tool that is both geographical and temporally conscious. Outlined in this paper is a proposal for a 3D modeling tool that incorporates information from material, weather, and environmental databases, enabling users to model with location-specific materials that dynamically respond to local environmental factors over time. This integration of material and environmental data empowers designers to consider the temporal dimension of their design decisions, promoting a more environmentally sustainable and contextually respon- sive design practice. The presented framework and pilot tool derived observations and insights from material studies, fabrication experiments, and accelerated weathering tests. These tests involve bio-composites made from agricultural byproducts and food wastes, where the findings are translated into computational simulations for material properties and decay. These insights inform the development of the framework, which seeks to align with the principles of a circular and hyperlocal material economy, countering supply-chain determinism by emphasizing localization, mechanical property variation, and material decay. This paper contributes to the advancement of architectural design and fabrication by bridging the gap between form-based and material-centric approaches, fostering an understanding of materials and their temporal characteristics. The proposed 3D modeling tool promotes sustainable and contextually responsive architectural solutions, advocating for the use of regionally sourced materials.

A regular decomposition of picture area into successively smaller quadrants is defined, which involves logarithmic search. summary In this paper, the dominant definitions of intelligence are explored in order to establish a set of working principals towards the development of higher order computational design processes in architecture. A review of intelligence as it has been understood over the last 60 years since Alan Turing (1950) first asked the question “can machines think?” shows the question of intelligence is far from clearly understood. Principals of intelligence however can be identified within the neurophysiological and artificial intelligence (AI) communities that differ significantly from the notion of intelligence as it is commonly used in architecture typically relating to the phenomena of emergence and critical point material physics. While distinct, these definitions provide a foundation for understanding intelligence specifically in computational architecture at a moment when it is necessary to develop a foundational taxonomy of systems thinking and processes. Through critiquing the principals of intelligence as it is understood in these different discipline areas, the thesis of this paper is that it is possible to frame a productive general theory of intelligent systems applicable to design processes, while simultaneously distinguishing the goals of design oriented higher order computational systems from those goals of general Artificial Intelligence research.

summary Sloping façade buildings have been present throughout XXth century architecture, for different programs and in different countries. One of the first architects to use sloping façades was probably Frank Lloyd Wright, two early examples being Taliesin West (1937) and the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel at Florida Southern College (1938-41). In Brazilian Modern architecture sloping façades soon became a recurrent solution, the earlier examples being produced by architects Oscar Niemeyer, João V. Artigas and Affonso E. Reidy, possibly influenced by FLW, as suggested by Irigoyen (2002). The present research proposes that these buildings may have influenced other architects in Brazil and abroad. In order to confirm this hypothesis, a design process was modelled and a shape grammar was developed to describe a small corpus of buildings designed by these three architects in the 1940´s and 1950´s.

summary Digital technologies are becoming a popular vehicle for the re-creation and dissemination of cultural heritage, in the form of modeling buildings, people, and their activities. Video game engines can be used to let user virtually "inhabit" the digitally recreated worlds made accessible via the Internet, opening them up to people who otherwise would never be exposed to these cultural sites. Yet, like every medium ever used to preserve cultural heritage, digital media is not neutral: it impacts the represented content and the ways the audience interprets it. Perhaps more than any older technology, it has the potential to affect the very meaning of the represented content in terms of the cultural image it creates. This paper examines the applications and implications of digital media for the recreation and communication of cultural heritage, drawing on the lessons learned from a project to recreate the thriving jazz and blues club scene in West Oakland, California, in the 1940s and 1950s.

summary In 1950, fifty years ago, Alan Turing published a much-quoted paper that has given rise to a long list of articles and books. It presented, perhaps for the first time, in a clever and somehow sarcastic way, what has become one of the main big questions raised by the use of computers in human societies. The title of that paper was "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" (Mind, Vol. LIX, No. 236, October 1950) and the game proposed in it, called by Turing "the imitation game" has come to be known as "Turing's Test". The paper presented here is a rather simple adaptation of Turing's Test. It may, I hope, present in a, perhaps, not too serious a way, some central points related to the way that computers have integrated themselves in architect's, engineer's and building enterprises and, through them, in the way that architecture evolves in our times and adapts itself to modern societies.

Given the dominance of certain concerns within the profession of architecture during that time—prefabrication and strict modularity—the selected case studies reveal unprecedented characteristics which anticipate current developments in algorithmic and parametric formation. The projects in question demonstrate sophisticated strategies for differentiated part-to-whole relationships which predate contemporary organizational systems, now derived with the aid of digital computation. Their importance to current architectural discourse lies in distinguishing the manner in which they manifest notions of space-time, including transformation, continuity and modulation, as architects increasingly operate within dexterous and interconnected environments.

summary This research focuses on the geometric analysis of a project by the architect Marcello D'Olivo, in which the role of parametrization could be a significant part.The first phase was an in-depth study of the compositional syntax of the author, in order to understand the rules adopted by him to design architectures. As he worked between 1950 and 1990, he didn't use digital software for the computation of his projects, but only traditional instruments.The second phase was a description of digital computational procedures to generate models using parametric software. The digitization of some morphologies designed by D'Olivo was converted in shape algorithms.So the aim of the research was to convert his analog procedures into a series of well-defined digital steps, in order to systematize a way to proceed to control complex forms and to attempt to build a bridge between the pencil projects of D'Olivo and parametric design.

summary The joint GeoVille/ARC Seibersdorf project EO-Plan-GIS has the objective of deriving Earth Observation (EO)/Geographic Information System (GIS) products for public and private customers (i.e. Austrian state governments and digital mapping industry). Representatives of three state administrations (i.e. Carynthia, Upper Austria and Vorarlberg) and of Tele Atlas (a commercial enterprise in the production of digital road databases) have been actively involved in the project activities. The major focus of the project is on the automated differentiation of built-up areas and the derivation of land use/cover data for both the state governments and Tele Atlas, as well as on the update and upgrade of the Tele Atlas road network. Using GIS methods, the EO-derived base data will be adapted to serve the individual user needs (i.e. Geographic State Information Systems and Tele Atlas MultiNet). EO-Plan-GIS was initiated by the Austrian Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology as a national initiative within theframework of the current GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) activities of ESA and the EU. summary In 1976 Richard Foqué established periods in the development of methods of designing. The first stage (the 50's and early 60's) - automatization of the designing process - properly identified language of description that is understood by a machine is vital. Christopher Alexander publishes 'Pattern Language'. The second stage (late 60's) - the use of the Arts - research techniques as interview, questionnaire, active observation; ergonomic aspects are also taken into consideration. The third stage (starts at the turn of the 60's and 70's) - co-participation of all of the parties involved in the designing process, and especially the user. The designing process becomes more complex but at the same time more intelligible to a non-professional - Alexander's 'Pattern Language' returns. It's been over 20 years now since the publication of this work. In the mid 70's prototypes of integrate building description are created. We are dealing now with the next stage of the designing methods development. Unquestionable progress of computer optimalization of technical and economical solutions has taken place. It's being forecasted that the next stage would be using computer as a simulator of the designing process. This stage may be combined with the development of AI. (Already in 1950 Alan Turing had formulated the theoretical grounds of Artificial Intelligence.) Can the development of the AI have the influence on the creation of present time regional architecture? Hereby I risk a conclusion that the development of AI can contribute to the creation of modern regional architecture.

summary Several research projects (Gramazio et al. 2014; Willmann et al. 2015; Helm et al. 2017; Adel et al. 2018; Adel Ahmadian 2020) have investigated the use of automated assembly technologies (e.g., industrial robotic arms) for the fabrication of nonstandard timber structures. Building on these projects, we present a novel and transferable process for the robotic fabrication of bespoke timber subassemblies made of off-the-shelf standard timber elements. A nonstandard timber structure (Figure 2), consisting of four bespoke subassemblies: three vertical supports and a Zollinger (Allen 1999) roof structure, acts as the case study for the research and validates the feasibility of the proposed process.

summary The built environment is a complex juxtaposition of static matter and dynamic flows, tangible objects and human experiences, physical realities and digital spaces. This paper offers an alternative understanding of those dichotomies by applying experimental design research strategies that combine objective quantification and subjective perception of urban contexts. The assumption is that layers of measurable datasets can be afforded with personal feedback to reveal "hidden" characteristics of cities. Drawing on studies from data and cognitive sciences, the proposed method allows us to analyze, quantify and visualize the individual experience of the built environment in relation to different urban qualities. By operating in between the scientific domain and the design realm, four design research experiments are presented. Leveraging augmenting and sensing technologies, these studies investigate: (1) urban attractors and user attention, employing eye-tracking technologies during walking; (2) urban proxemics and sensory experience, applying proximity sensors and EEG scanners in varying contexts; (3) urban mood and spatial perception, using mobile applications to merge tangible qualities and subjective feelings; and (4) urban vibe and paced dynamics, combining vibration sensing and observational data for studying city beats. This work demonstrates that, by adopting a multisensory and multidisciplinary approach, it is possible to gain a more human-centered, and perhaps novel understanding of the built environment. A lexicon of experimented urban situations may become a reference for studying different typologies of environments from the user experience, and provide a framework to support creative intuition for the development of more engaging, pleasant, and responsive spaces and places.

summary The direct and rapid connections between scripting, modeling and prototyping allow for investigations of computation in fabrication. The manipulation of planar materials with two-dimensional CNC cuts can easily create complex and varied forms, volumes, and surfaces. However, the bulk of research on folding using CNC fabrication tools is focused upon surfaces, self-supporting walls and shell structures, which do not integrate well into more conventional building construction models.This paper attempts to explain the potential for using folding methodologies to develop structural members through a design-build process. Conventional building practice consists of the assembly of off-the-shelf parts. Many times, the plinth, skeleton, and skin are independently designed and fabricated, integrating multiple industries. Using this method of construction as an operative status quo, this investigation focused on a single structural component: the truss. A truss is defined as: “A triangulated arrangement of structural members that reduces nonaxial external forces to a set of axial forces in its members.” (Allen and Iano 2004)Using folding methodologies and sheet steel to create a truss, this design investigation employed a recyclable and prolific building material to redefine the fabrication of a conventional structural member. The potential for using digital design and two-dimensional CNC fabrication tools in the design of a foldable truss from sheet steel is viable in the creation of a flat-packed, minimal waste structural member that can adapt to a variety of aesthetic and structural conditions. Applying new methods to a component of the conventional ‘kit of parts’ allowed for a novel investigation that recombines zero waste goals, flat-packing potential, structural expression and computational processes.
