summary The role of the architect is quite literally one of assembly: synthesizing the various parts of a project into a cohesive whole. It is a difficult job, often requiring the architect to weave many seemingly contradictory concerns into a solution that benefits them all. It is not surprising then, that the many elegant and effective systems found in nature should be inspiring to the architect. Emerging fields like biomimicry and systems dynamics model the patterns of interaction between organisms and their environments in terms of dynamic part to part and part to whole relationships. ¶ Observations of real relationships between organisms and their environments, as they exist in nature, reveal complex feedback loops working across multiple scales. These feedback loops operate by the simultaneous action of two observed phenomena. The first is the classic phenotypic relationship seen when organisms of the same genetic makeup instantiate differently based upon differences in their environment. This is the relationship that was originally proposed by Charles Darwin in his theory of natural selection of 1859. Darwin’s model is unidirectional: the organism adapts to its environment, but not the other way around. It operates at the local scale as individual parts react to the conditions of the whole. (Canguilhem, 1952). ¶ The second phenomenon, which sees its effect at the global scale, is the individual’s role as consumer and producer in the flows of energy and material that surround it. It is the subtle and incremental influence of the organism upon its environment, the results of which are often invisible until they reach a catastrophic threshold, at which point all organisms in the system feel global changes. ; The research presented in this paper addresses the dialectic between organism and environment as each responds reciprocally to the others’ changing state. Such feedback loops act in a non-linear fashion, across nested scales in biological systems. They can be modeled to act that way in a digital design process as well. This research is an exploration into one such model and its application to architecture: the simple communication between organisms as they affect and are affected by their environments through the use of signal chemicals.

summary In 1952 the Italian Olivetti Company opened a study laboratory on electronic calculators in New Canaan, USA; in 1955 it created an electronic research laboratory in Pisa and two years later, co-founded a company to produce electronic conductors. In 1959 it presented ELEA 9003 and in 1965 the P101, respectively the first full transistorized computer and the first desktop computer. This paper aims to investigate how the Olivetti Company accomplished in such a brief period of time a pioneer vision in the field of computing. By one hand it seeks to highlight the forerunner idea of Adriano Olivetti (1901-1960) for an integrated awareness of what computing could become and on the other hand, how that wakefulness fostered an innovative agenda among architects, designers, filmmakers and scientists for the invention of the computer as an artifact expression of an epoch. This successful endeavor anticipated what would become the concept of personal computing. Moreover the paper underlines how the early commercial development of Olivetti and IBM computing flourished in the context of the Universal Exhibitions of Brussels and New York.

summary Reports show that numerous heritage sites are in danger due to conflicts and heritage mismanagement in many parts of the world. Experts have resorted to digital tools to attempt to conserve and preserve endangered and damaged sites. To that end, in this applied research, we aim to develop a deep learning framework applied to the decaying tangible heritage of Historic Cairo, known as “The City of a Thousand Minarets.” The proposed framework targets Cairo’s historic minaret styles as a test case study for the broader applications of deep learning in digital heritage. It comprises recognition and segmentation tasks, which use a deep learning semantic segmentation model trained on two data sets representing the two most dominant minaret styles in the city, Mamluk (1250–1517 CE) and Ottoman (1517–1952 CE). The proposed framework aims to classify these two types using images. It can help create a multidimensional model from just a photograph of a historic building, which can quickly catalog and document a historic building or element. The study also sheds light on the obstacles preventing the exploration and implementation of deep learning techniques in digital heritage. The research presented in this paper is a work-in-progress of a larger applied research concerned with implementing deep learning techniques in the digital heritage domain.

The book The Art of Computer Graphics Programming: A Structured Introduction for Architects and Designers was published in 1987 by William J. Mitchell, Robin Ligget and Thomas Kvan, and remains an important reference for architects. The original Pascal codes in the book were translated into Processing, and made available through an Internet website, along with images and comments, in order to give late Prof. Mitchell’s work the consideration it deserves.

summary The development of expert systems (ES) for manufacturing problems indicates a need to interact with potentially large amounts of data, much of which resides elsewhere in the ES user's organization. A large amount of information required for planning, design, and control operations can be made available through an existing database management system (DBMS). The need for an ES to access that data is critical. This paper presents two approaches to the development of ES- DBMS interfaces, both query-language based. One approach uses a procedural attachment to the ES language to obtain the required data via the DBMS query language, while the other one uses a separate interface program between the ES and the query language of the DBMS. The procedural attachment is able to acquire data from a DBMS at a faster rate than the interface program; however, the procedural attachment lacks knowledge of the DBMS schema. On the other hand, the interface program sacrifices speed but promotes flexibility, as it has the capability of selecting which DBMS to extract the required data from and allowing augmentation of schema knowledge outside of the ES. A disadvantage of the interface approach is the amount of time involved in data retrieval. The process of writing information to disk files is I/O intensive. This can be quite slow, particularly in PROLOG, the language used to implement the ES. Thus the use of such an interface is only suitable in applications such as design, where extremely fast I/O is not required

summary The MICON Synthesizer Version 1 (M1) is a rule-based system which produces a complete small computer design from a set of abstract specifications. The ability of M1 to produce designs depends on the encoding of large amounts of domain knowledge. An automated knowledge acquisition tool, CGEN, works symbiotically with M1 by gathering the knowledge required by M1. CGEN acquires knowledge about how to build and when to use various computer structures. This paper overviews the operation of CGEN by providing an example of the types of knowledge acquired and the mechanisms employed. A novel knowledge-intensive generalization scheme is presented. Generalization is a pragmatic necessity for knowledge acquisition in this domain. A series of experiments to test CGEN's capabilities are explained. A description of the architecture and knowledge-base of M1 is also provided

However, the acquisition of knowledge is a difficult and tedious task. Automated knowledge-acquisition tools (AKAT) provide capabilities for quickly building and maintaining knowledge-bases. This paper describes the CGEN AKAT, which allows hardware designers, unfamiliar with artificial intelligence programming techniques, to deposit their expertise into a synthesis tool's knowledge-base. A set of experiments which tested CGEN's capabilities are presented. The experiments show that with CGEN hardware designers can produce high quality knowledge-bases

This paper argues that, whilst literature and film are appropriate precedents, there are more suitable sources to refer to when designing virtual worlds. The paper discusses the use of computer modelling in exploring architectonic concepts in three-dimensional space. In doing so it draws on the philosophy of simulation and gives examples from alternative film and literature sources but concludes that one of the most appropriate metaphors is widely available in the form of the television soap opera.

summary DesignSpace is a computer-aided-design (CAD) system that facilitates dexterous manipulation of mechanical design representations. The system consists of an interactive simulation programmed with a seamless extended model of the designer's physical environment and driven with continuous instrumentation of the designer's physical actions. The simulation displays consistent visual and aural images of the virtual environment without occluding the designer's sensation of the physical surroundings. Developed at Stanford University's Center for Design Research (CDR), DesignSpace serves as an experimental testbed for design theory and methodology research. DesignSpace includes significant contributions from recent CDR development projects: TalkingGlove, CutPlane, VirtualHand, TeleSign, and VirtualGrasp. The current DesignSpace prototype provides modeling facility for only crude conceptual design and assembly, but can network multiple systems to share a common virtual space and arbitrate the collaborative interaction. The DesignSpace prototype employs three head-tracked rear projection images, head-coupled binaural audio, hand instrumentation, and electromagnetic position tracking.

summary The recent availability of Non-Manifold Topology (NMT) enables the coexistence of wireframe geometry, surfaces, and solids in a single representation with complete topological resolution. This in turn allows a new approach to boundary evaluation. This new approach merges a set of primitives into a single Boundary REPresentation (B-rep), and selects the desired Boolean results without destroying any B-rep entities. The results of the Boolean operations are displayed by drawing only selected entities. The B-rep resulting from the merge contains a complete description of the input primitives. While traditional algorithms allow incremental addition of primitives, this new approach also allows incremental deletion of primitives from the merged B-rep. Changes in Boolean operators and/or their order of evaluation can be reflected in the B-rep simply by changing the criteria of the selection process. Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) editing operations can be mirrored in the B-rep incrementally, i.e. without performing complete reevaluation of the B-rep from its constituent primitive definitions. In addition, the domain of boundary evaluation has been extended to include Boolean operations between wireframe geometry, surfaces, and solids. This new approach has been successfully implemented and tested to boundary evaluation. Test results have shown an order of magnitude reduction in the cost associated with reflecting CSG editing operations on existing B-reps, with only minimal additional cost for initial construction. summary The purpose of this study is to analyze William Hajjar’s singlefamily houses in State College, PA, and compare them with the European modernist work of Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer in the United States. This analysis is performed using shape grammars as a computational design methodology. Hajjar was a member of the architecture faculty at the Pennsylvania State University, a practitioner in State College, and an influential figure in the history of architecture in the area. Shape grammars are used specifically to verify and describe the influences of Bauhaus/European modernism on Hajjar’s domestic architecture. The focus is on establishing Hajjar’s single-family architectural language and comparing it to the architectural language of Gropius (Gropius-Breuer partnership) as the founder of the Bauhaus architecture and a prominent practitioner in introducing European modernism to American architecture students in the mid-twentieth century like Hajjar.

summary A major aspect of engineering design is the formulation, application, evaluation, and satisfaction of design constraints. The ability to represent and process a wide variety of such constraints is a necessary ingredient of an engineering design database. This is especially true in databases integrating several design processes, where the database management system must serve as an active design agent performing many of the consistency and integrity checks that are currently done manually. This paper presents a mechanism for representing and processing engineering design constraints. The mechanism can be used for checking that constraints are satisfied as well as for deriving attribute values that satisfy the applicable constraints. Furthermore, the mechanism provides flexibility in sequencing the enforcement of constraints by allowing new constraints to be applied to a preexisting state of the database as well as to all subsequent operations on the database. In both these respects, the mechanism proposed appears to have applications beyond engineering design. The mechanism presented handles a broad class of single-relation, single-tuple constraints typical in engineering design applications. Instead of relying on normalization where possible, to remove functional dependencies, the mechanism incorporates new attributes that represent the status (satisfied or violated) of each constraint, thereby increasing the functional dependence of the relation. Consequently, passive constraint checking can be readily extended to active assignment of attribute values that automatically satisfy constraints. A prototype system implementing many of the components presented has been programmed in Pascal. In addition, portions of the system were implemented using the Relational Information Management (RIM) system, a commercially available DBMS

summary This paper describes a development process and mechanism for transmitting academic research and information to the community and the profession, and attempts to examine the effect of the information on the community. It is about my recent work with students on the design and development of a prototype interactive electronic document for archiving and visualizing information on an urban area. The work reflects the initial phase of a three year research grant and is a prototype document of a pilot area. The design and visualization of information for this area will establish the primary organization and graphic user interface, for the entire project. The final document will provide community organizations and city agencies with an interactive tool for visualizing and evaluating neighborhood planning and design proposals.
