title New Territories: The digital model as a shape-laboratory in architectural education
source SIGraDi 2005 - [Proceedings of the 9th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Lima - Peru 21-24 november 2005, vol. 1, pp. 264-269
summary New digital technologies allow architecture students to explore architectural shape freed of many of the formal and physical constraints implicit in traditional analog representation technologies. We believe that this will allow for a greater understanding of the origin of architectural form and the emergence of new project methodologies, informed by current day developments in digital art and visualization systems. Ultimately, the new generation of architects should be able to select, adapt and create digital tools that allow them to process, manipulate and give form to wide-ranging and complex data sets. title Parametric urban simulation: digital modeling system for building codes
source SIGraDi 2005 - [Proceedings of the 9th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Lima - Peru 21-24 november 2005, vol. 2, pp. 591-596
summary Urban building codes include a series of abstract geometric and mathematical prescriptions whose final built result is not easily visualized by non-technical users. This makes an informed public debate about the proposed regulations difficult and leaves the final definition of the exact ratios and formulas in the hands of local governments’ technical consultants. Even these experts usually have only gross numerical approximations, photomontages and other non-rigorous representations of the final built environment on which to base their decisions. We propose a system which, taking as its inputs the roads and lots of the area under consideration, as well as the proposed building codes, generates a detailed three dimensional model that gives neighbors, users and authorities’ access to a common, objective preview of the foreseeable result of the codes under consideration. We believe this will lead to a greater transparency and participation in building code definition and approval processes. [Full paper in Spanish]

source SIGraDi 2018 [Proceedings of the 22nd Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISSN: 2318-6968] Brazil, São Carlos 7 - 9 November 2018, pp. 1159-1166
summary The paper presents some of the spatial production involved in three events promoted by different organizations in the city of Brasilia, Brazil. The role of architecture was to materialize sensations, experiences and phenomena for the people who participated. This production defines a kind of urbanism produced by groups of people who are temporarily using public spaces of the city with creativity. Limited by minimum time and budgets, and located in a place where high technology is scarce, handcraft is a necessity in all production processes. The main intention is to analyze how the use of advanced technology corresponds to this type of situation.

title Design Intents Disentanglement: A Multimodal Approach for Grounding Design Attributes in Objects
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2022.1.333
source Jeroen van Ameijde, Nicole Gardner, Kyung Hoon Hyun, Dan Luo, Urvi Sheth (eds.), POST-CARBON - Proceedings of the 27th CAADRIA Conference, Sydney, 9-15 April 2022, pp. 333-342
summary Language is ambiguous; many terms and expressions convey the same idea. This is especially true in design fields, where conceptual ideas are generally described by high-level, qualitative attributes, called design intents. Words such as "organic", sequences like "this chair is a mixture between Japanese aesthetics and Scandinavian design" or more complex structures such as "we made the furniture layering materials like a bird weaving its nest‚ represent design intents. Furthermore, most design intents do not have unique visual representations, and are highly entangled within the design artifact, leading to complex relationships between language and images. This paper examines an alternative design scenario based on everyday natural language used by designers, where inputs such as a minimal and sleek looking chair are visually inferred by algorithms that have previously learned complex associations between designs and intents‚vision and language, respectively. We propose a multimodal sequence-to-sequence model which takes in design images and their corresponding descriptions and outputs a probability distribution over regions of the images in which design attributes are grounded. Expectedly, our model can reason and ground objective descriptors such as black or curved. Surprisingly, our model can reason about and ground more complex subjective attributes such as rippled or free, suggesting potential regions where the design object might register such vague descriptions. title Interactive Form-Finding for Biomimetic Fibre Structures: Development of a Computational Design Tool and Physical Fabrication Technique Based on the Biological Structure of the Lichen

summary This contribution shows a biomimetic approach to design and produce fibrous structural elements derived from the morphology of the biologic archetype ‘the lichen’. The physical form fi nding strategy allows for a novel self-organised reinforcement for fibrous composite systems. A computational design tool has been developed, based on the fi ndings of various physical models. The digital device allows for shape control and therefore an interaction to and manipulation of the fabrication process. Since the form fi nding algorithms of the tool are based on physical experiments, every geometry is derived through the program and has its counterpart in production. For example: the fibre density in the model can be adjusted which leads to different geometries. In production the chosen denseness is utilised, thus, the production yields automatically to the desired load-optimized geometry found in the form-finding tool.

summary Data collected from real-world projects using Web-based communications and project management systems provide quantitative evidence for characterizing the design process. Tens of thousands of records have been analyzed from six cases. The cases are all high-end office and retail building projects, with about 50 members of the design team. The data supports the distinction of multiple stages in the design process as the patterns of usage of the software changes through time. Coordination activities are more frequent in early stages, while collaboration activities are more common in late stages. In planning and design stages, use of the software is focused upon accessing static information, while in construction documentation a relatively greater number of activities include generate and process operations.

title Integrating Language and Database for CAD Applications
source Computer Aided Design. IPC Business Press, May, 1979. vol. 11: pp.127-130. includes bibliography
summary This paper focuses on some issues related to the integration of database and programming language concepts and the usefulness of this integration for integrity maintenance. The first section explains why compilation should be independent of the database and presents some consequences of this independence. The second section shows how procedures become integrated parts of the database and serve to implement automatic maintenance of designer-defined integrity by being automatically invoked upon database operations. The third section develops a particular scheme for integrity maintenance with these procedures. Finally, in the fourth section, semantic-integrity is extended to system integrity and it is suggested that the scheme developed in the third section can apply to system integrity

summary Architects are used to work with models since the early beginnings of Renaissance. These models were made to conceive spatial objects before they become realized. Nowadays space seems to be outdated: There are information topologies, virtuality, and globalization. Our models are logistical rather than spatial and they become increasingly complicated. They put an emphasis on energy- or cost-efficiency rather than the vividness of a localized place. But as Architects we are supposed to be ‚masters of space’. And somehow it feels like we have lost our domain and degraded ourselves to attaching nice skins on increasingly optimized concrete- or steel-skeletons. In this sense it might be necessary to reconsider our mastership upon the articulation of space. One way to achieve this might be that computation could do more than just deliver increasingly intriguing geometries, instead it might offer us a look at the spaces conceivable but not yet imaginable: computed as information topologies and then rendered back into the geometrical framework of physical space. New media have entered our perception to a degree never imagined by future sciences of the past. So the question arises if space-time can still be considered as a single layer in actuality. As individualization takes command, being special becomes normality. In a quantized society, where many cultures coexist at the same places simultaneously, a new model to space must deal with the superposition of territories.

summary The paper argues that Modernism has produced a manifoldness of theories about spaces or spatial configurations which resemble valuable facets. Yet, they all shed a light on single aspects of spatiality. This raises the question if not in the age of information, there could be a common ground for theories of space that might serve as a model to purport a more general view. Speaking with French philosopher Michel Serres, when the old model of time collapsed at the end of Modernity, it has left the underlying concepts as scattered elements to the beginning of Modernism. The most promising approach to reconcile these elements in spatiotemporality appears to be Category Theory in mathematics. It defines four categorically differentiated domains which exactly resemble the scattered elements. In search for a common ground to build up a new model, the Syntopy is being developed for thinking space, based on the way information is encoded within these four domains.

source Architecture in the Network Society [22nd eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9541183-2-4] Copenhagen (Denmark) 15-18 September 2004, pp. 256-261
summary Idea association is an important behavior to generate diverse ideas during brainstorming. Through three linking principles (similarity, contrast and contiguity), idea association involves a dynamic linking process between ideas and design cases. Based on the knowledge representation issue-concept-form proposed by Oxman (1993), three interactive patterns between ideas and design cases are investigated. Finally, some computational mechanisms for supporting the linkage of idea association are discussed.

summary This paper presents a pedagogical approach to explore the relationships between time and space by using digital media. Based on a pedagogical model called e-Space proposed by Lai (2004), we apply motion as a spatial issue to approach this study. Through integrating with the characteristics of digital media, students are encouraged to evolve architectural space and form by decomposing, re-organizing, interpreting and realizing the spatial composition. Simultaneously, diverse digital media applications integrated with design thinking in a design process enables students to bridge two design spaces - physical and virtual. This process introduces the students to a new approach of design-creation and form finding. Finally, we use an advanced digital media course as an example to understand the impacts of the pedagogical approach. The students’ outcomes are also reported in this paper

summary In the traditional approach to building design, the designer (usually the architect) produces a design (often quite detailed)in blueprint before handing this to the next member of the design team (engineer) to superimpose the structure, services etc. Often this proves so impractical that the initial proposal has to be referred back to the architect for revision, and the process repeated - and this cycle may be repeated many times. Such routines arise in building design because designers find collaboration among themselves difficult to control, the task of design integration ultimately falling upon the construction manager or the contractor. This is the most common cause of problems arising during the execution of the project on site, causing a delays in the construction process, and building failures which might only be detected after occupancy. As a test-bed for addressing this problem, a system of coordinated files is proposed for use by design-students (with a working knowledge of AutoCAD) during a design project. The aim is to related data (CAD information) across all students working on the same project but developing different aspects. Participating students will be drawn from a range of design specialisms. Each member accessing the same information while developing different aspects (e.g. structure, services, and cost modelling). This goes beyond the conventional use of 'XREF' (cross-referenced drawings) and involves each member accessing and working with the same dataset - e.g. using different layers, co-ordination is easier and the data better integrated - there is thereby a reduction of the amount of repetition as the need to redraw information is eliminated. References or an initial data-set is set up by the tutor and available for reference at any stage of design project. The technological aspects to support collaborative work (and in particular the interaction process in design) is the main thrust of the undergraduate degree in Building Design Engineering at the University of Strathclyde.
