summary Since the almost simultaneous publication of Kevin Lynch and Jane Jacobs´ seminal and pioneer urban manifestos, the discipline has been increasingly permeated by what could be rightly called the phenomenological impulse. While sharing methodological principles, however, they represent two very distinct approaches to the study of urban matters, a distinction rooted on their chosen object of study. The drawing of this distinction constitutes this research´s point of departure. Its fundamental aim is to help further the development of what we characterize as the Jacobs´s lineage of urban thought. To this end, the paper outlines methodological rudiments for the development of a methodological tool that would allow the beginning of a systematic study of the patterns of people´s presence and absence in urban space (streets). We call it Urban Polaroid. This work is part of a government funded (fondecyt 11110450) project.

summary Everybody who has read his Gordon Cullen or his Edmund H. Bacon knows that movement has long been recognized as a factor in environmental planning in many ways. For example, in the traditional Japanese promenade garden the importance of movement has always been appreciated. The promenader gains an intense experience of the succession, variation and rhythm of the surrounding scene. The spaces and paths lead him from one stage to another. The spatial structure of the Japanese promenade garden, as well as of traditional Japanese architecture in general, is joined most intensively to time and motion. The environment is in relation to the flow of change in many sense, both concretely and existentially. Taking an example of western urban environment. Here perhaps the most marked sequential spaces are to be found in small medieval, mediterranean towns. Thanks to their organic growth, narrow and winding streets and the emphasis on public squares, most of them provide exciting experiences if the observer is only interested in seeing the townscape from the point of view of movement. There are also examples of this kind of environment in Finland. In old wooden towns like Porvoo and Rauma one can still find varied and rhythmic streetscapes and networks of streets and squares, together with a human scale and an almost timeless atmosphere. One could say that such an opportunity to experience spaces sequentially, or as serial visions, is an important dimension for us, especially as pedestrians. And as Gordon Cullen has shown there is in any urban environment much scope to heighten this experience. For example, by creating a sense of ’entering in’ some place, ’leaving for’, ’moving towards’, ’turning into’, ’walking through’ some place or ’following on’ the flow of spaces. Or, as Edmund H. Bacon has said, the departure point of good town planning should be that the successive towns spaces give rise to a flow of harmonic experiences: present experiences merge with earlier ones and become a step towards a future. Or, again in the words of Donald Appleyard, Kevin Lynch and John R. Myer: “The experience of a city is basically of a moving view, and this is the view we must understand if we wish to reform the look of our cities”.

summary Legibility is a core concept in spatial cognition theories since Kevin Lynch published The Image of the City in 1960. It is the ability of a city to be interpreted and easily used, travelled and enjoyed, from the pedestrian's perspective. Following a proposal in the participatory budget process of the city of Bilbao, we wrote a technical report to improve the urban legibility of the city and facilitate wayfinding through innovations in signage. This paper aims to present this project, which is an application of computational methods to measure urban legibility that resulted in a proposal for a new wayfinding strategy for Bilbao. The method is based on GIS data, and it simulates urban processes using dedicated algorithms, allowing us to perform two analyses that resulted in two overlapping maps: a heat map of decision points and a map of visual openings. It allowed us to perceive common urban elements that can help to decide both the location of the wayfinding signage and how it should provide the relevant information. In addition, the research introduces the concept of anticipation points, as a complement to the existing idea of decision points.

summary How do one’s emotions, mental state, and the spatial environment interact? Interdisciplinary research methods in architecture and neuroscience can be used to examine the interrelated factors of mental load, sensory cues, emotions, and memory in wayfinding. The objective is to propose a biometric methodology for quantifying the emotional and cognitive experience of wayfinding, and to present a pilot experiment on the impact of mental load on wayfinding. The methodology collected biometric (electrodermal activity, electroencephalogram, heart rate, accelerometer), visuospatial (GPS, camera), and interview data. The pilot study revealed a new category of sensory cues used by individuals to wayfind. Identified as “breadcrumbs” and associated with subjective emotions, researchers propose an addition to Kevin Lynch’s elements of the built environment that contribute to cognitive mapping. The aim is to invite a rethinking of the typically precedent-based nature of spatial design, bolstering the discussion with individual experience data to encourage evidence-based design.

summary This paper explores the application of computer vision and machine learning to streetlevel imagery of cities, reevaluating past theory linking urban form to human perception. This paper further proposes a new method for design based on the resulting model, where a designer can identify areas of a city tied to certain perceptual qualities and generate speculative street scenes optimized for their predicted saliency on labels of human experience. This work extends Kevin Lynch’s Image of the City with deep learning: training an image classification model to recognize Lynch’s five elements of the city image, using Lynch’s original photographs and diagrams of Boston to construct labeled training data alongside new imagery of the same locations. This new city image revitalizes past attempts to quantify the human perception of urban form and improve urban design. A designer can search and map the data set to understand spatial opportunities and predict the quality of imagined designs through a dynamic process of collage, model inference, and adaptation. Within a larger practice of design, this work suggests that the curation of archival records, computer science techniques, and theoretical principles of urbanism might be integrated into a single craft. With a new city image, designers might “see” at the scale of the city, as well as focus on the texture, color, and details of urban life.

summary This paper explores the evolution of architecture within an urban scale, utilizing Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to increase diversity and suggest various alternatives. Drawing inspiration from Henri Bergson's concepts of creative evolution, GANs' non-deterministic nature echoes Bergson's emphasis on creativity within evolutionary processes in urban design. Leveraging GANs' latent space, this study envisions a framework for AI-driven architectural generation, merging Bergson's ideas of creative intuition with AI's adaptive potential. Using Seoul as a case study, integrating Kevin Lynch's principles and symbolic representation techniques like the Nolli map, the research navigates urban spaces to create cohesive morphologies. Lynch has abstracted from the physical city. He is representing cities on the level of text, grammars and structures. What if one takes his exercise seriously and starts to play with text on the level on information, data, lists and indexes? What is an image of a book, its character, mood, how many faces does it have? This is a going to be a drama.

summary Architects and urban designers are increasingly using computers in their attempt to improve decision making in urban design. Most existing systems emphasize hard data such as statistics, land use data, etc. In recent years with the use of more powerful computers we have seen a greater emphasis on managing visual data. Computer systems are being used to generate urban models and simulations of the various kinds of impact new developments have on the existing cityscape.

This project emphasizes the use of visual data. The purpose of the research has been to develop a computer system for urban designers to use in analyzing urban architectural qualities. Therefore this project focuses on applying traditional methods and theories of urban designers rather than developing new computer techniques.

The traditional methods and theories of urban designers fall within the category which the French theorist Francoise Choay calls Pre-urbanism and Urbanism - the Cultural Model. Theorists within this category include Camillo Sitte, Gordon Cullen, Kevin Lynch, Leon Krier, Aldo Rossi, Michael Trieb, Roger Tranzick and Thiis-Evensen.

This computer system has been developed as a prototype in order to gain experience and knowledge for future development of a large system. Later development will be based upon a vectorized threedimensional model of a whole city using texture mapping and tracing techniques to annotate important architectural features.

The computer system consists of the basic analysis module supplied with a simulation unit and a theory unit. With this analytical tool, analysis is conducted on three different urban scales. The prototype has been developed on the Macintosh computer with SuperCard as the authoring tool.

The computer system was developed as a prototype for Danish Urban Designers and is currently being tested in conjunction with the city of Viborg, Denmark. ( population 55,000). Located in Jutland, Viborg was the capital of Denmark around the year 1000. It now functions as a center for regional government. Viborg was selected as the test site because of its historical core.

summary The research presented in this paper describes the develop- ment of an Instagram-based multidimensional clustering algorithm. The algorithm analyses large datasets of Instagram images to establish new metrics that qualitatively assess proximity relations in a given geographical area —i.e. negotiates multiple acceptations of proximity. Influenced by Qualitative Spatial Reasoning, Lewis Mumford’s geo- graphic plexus and Kevin Lynch’s perceptual mapping, a graphic GUI-based application has been developed to produce real-time visu- alizations —maps, network graphs, and charts— by means of brows- ing, downloading and post-processing Instagram feeds. First, the ap- plication’s functioning will be described; second, several graphic visualizations will demonstrate the capabilities of the software; third, limitations and further development will be discussed.

summary This article describes an augmented reality exposition of three Brazilian World Expo pavilions. The study of Expo pavilions allow us to perceive several historic and cultural narratives embodied in those designs. The selected pavilions were from 1939 New York World’s Fair (by Oscar Niemeyer and Lucio Costa), 1958 Brussels World’s Fair (by Sergio Bernardes) and 1970 Osaka Expo ’70 (by Paulo Mendes da Rocha). The exposition is going to be held at the main campus of UFRJ, using Layar technology with minor adaptations to show the models in natural scale along with their corresponding information, discussing locative media opportunities regarding Architecture and Virtual Heritage.

summary In this paper, we present a procedure to derive algebraic parameters from geometrically described truncated hyperbolic paraboloid surfaces. The procedure uses parametric modelling and optimisation to converge on close algebraic approximations of hyperbolic paraboloid geometry through a successive breakdown of vast search spaces. We illustrate this procedure with its application to the surfaces of the 1958 Philips Pavilion designed by Le Corbusier and Iannis Xenakis. This application yielded previously unavailable parametric data of this building in algebraic form. It highlights the power of the parametric design and optimisation toolkit, both in terms of automated search and epistemological enablement.

title Algebraic analysis and reconstruction of the Philips Pavilion’s hyperbolic paraboloid surfaces

summary In this article, we present a procedure to derive algebraic descriptions from geometric descriptions of trimmed hyperbolic paraboloid (or ‘hypar’) surfaces. We contextualise this procedure historically, and we illustrate its application using the 1958 Philips Pavilion by Le Corbusier and Iannis Xenakis as a case study. The procedure uses parametric modelling and computational optimisation to converge on close algebraic ap- proximations of hyperbolic paraboloid geometry through a successive breakdown of vast search spaces. It departs from coordinate data of three or four vertices of a geometrically described hyperbolic paraboloid and yields the surface’s two quadratic coefficients, the coordinates of its centroid location and the rotation angles of its spatial orientation. The procedure exemplifies the under-explored analytical (as opposed to generative) use of computational optimisation and parametric modelling in the field of architectural computing.

summary The purpose of this study is to build 3D models for the digital preservation of Chinese architecture. A historical architecture, the main hall of the Pao-An Temple, was scanned with a long-range 3D laser scanner. This temple is 19.68 meters wide, 18.2 meters wide, and 15.7 meters high. In total, the exterior and interior were registered into 1958 scans in order to cover the main hall. Scanned point clouds were converted into 3D computer models, sections, and boundary projections. Digital models were used as references for chronological records and comparison. Scanned components included the roof ridge, wood structure, dragon column, and a hanging flower. This research, which was sponsored by the National Science Council, created a two-way construction process, integrated geometric and image data, and established a digital reservation work process. Web pages were made to display 3D color components by using a plug-in to enable browsing of large files.

summary Advances in electronic design and communication are already reshaping the way architecture is done. The development of more sophisticated and user-friendly Computer Aided Design (CAD) software and of cheaper and more powerful hardware is making computers more and more accessible to architects, planners and designers. These professionals are not only using them as a drafting tool but also as a instrument for visualization. Designers are "building" digital models of their designs and producing photo-like renderings of spaces that do not exist in the dimensional world.

The problem resides in how realistic these Computer Generated Models (CGM) are. Moss & Banks (1958) considered realism “the capacity to reproduce as exactly as possible the object of study without actually using it”. He considers that realism depends on: 1)The number of elements that are reproduced; 2) The quality of those elements; 3) The similarity of replication and 4) Replication of the situation. CGM respond well to these considerations, they can be very realistic. But, are they capable of reproducing the same impressions on people as a real space?

Research has debated about the problems of the mode of representation and its influence on the judgement which is made. Wools (1970), Lau (1970) and Canter, Benyon & West (1973) have demonstrated that the perception of a space is influenced by the mode of presentation. CGM are two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional space. Canter (1973) considers the three-dimensionality of the stimuli as crucial for its perception. So, can a CGM afford as much as a three-dimensional model?

The “Laboratorio de Experimentacion Espacial” (LEE) has been concerned with the problem of reality of the models used by architects. We have studied the degree in which models can be used as reliable and representative of real situations analyzing the Ecological Validity of several of them, specially the Real-Scale Model (Abadi & Cavallin, 1994). This kind of model has been found to be ecologically valid to represent real space. This research has two objectives: 1) to study the Ecological Validity of a Computer Generated Model; and 2) compare it with the Ecological Validity of a Real Scale Model in representing a real space.

summary The aim of this academic research was to analyze one of the fi rst architectures designed and built with the fi nality to present electronic potentialities to people. The design was developed by Le Corbusier and his studio for the International Expo held in Brussels in 1958, for the Philips fi rm, and it was destroyed some months later, after the event. The research investigated the complex geometry of the structure in order to understand the strict relation between the physical perception of the space and the electronic aspects of them, using advanced technology, but, above all, if it is true that the best way to understand the physicality of a destroyed architecture could be a virtual visit using electronic devices and digital procedures.

summary This paper is the result of two researches done at the district of Campeche, Florianópolis, by the Grupo PET/ARQ/UFSC/CAPES. Different aspects and conceptual approaches were used to study the spatial attributes of this district located in the Southern part of Santa Catarina Island. The readings and analysis of two researches were based on graphic pistures builded with the use of Corel 7.0 e AutoCadR14. The first research – "Urban Development in the Island of Santa Catarina: Public Space Study"- examined the urban structures of Campeche based on the Spatial Syntax Theory developed by Hillier and Hanson (1984) that relates form and social appropriation of public spaces. The second research – "Topoceptive Characterisation of Campeche: The Image of a Locality in Expansion in the Island of Santa Catarina" -, based on the methodology developed by Kohlsdorf (1996) and also on the visual analysis proposed by Lynch (1960), identified characteristics of this locality with the specific goal of selecting attributes that contributed to the ideas of the place its population held. The paper consists of an initial exercise of linking these two methods in order to test the complementarity of their analytical tools. Exemplifying the analytical procedures undertaken in the two approaches, the readings done - global (of the locality as a whole) and partial (from parts of the settlement) - are presented and compared.

summary The paper discusses the following problem: How can digital technology are integrated with urban composition teaching to provide a better understanding of the aesthetical and emotional aspects of the city? It argues for the current need for an integration of computer modelling and the approaches developed form the work of K. Lynch, G. Cullen, R. Krier, F. Ching. The paper is based on the experience in design studio teaching and an experiment completed with students. The exercise shows the students that different spatial organization may cause different emotions according to the treatment of space-defining elements. The paper presents the background and context as well as describes the experimental environment and the student work.

summary The Internet, the place that people called "cyberspace", is a new place that people can explore in now. But we usually fell "astray" in there because there are no signs like roads, bridges, like it is in the physical world. This paper tries to cite the Lynch's (1960) urban design theory, then to develop a new Internet search mechanism's graphic user interface, and tries to help people explore in Internet more effectively.
