title The cybernetic imagination of computational architecture

summary Since the publication in 1948 of Norbert Wiener’s Cybernetics, this thought model has exerted a profound influence in contemporary knowledge. Such influence has been decisive for a paradigm shift in the profession of architecture and particularly for the rise of a computational perspective in architectural design. This article explores the link between the cybernetic paradigm and the conception of architectural objects as performative, responsive, intelligent, and sentient artifacts—the visions of buildings that have been central to the development of digital architecture since its early stages. This connection shows that the dominant visions of design problems associated with the development of a computational perspective in architecture have not been exclusively the result of the introduction of computer pragmatics in architectural design. On the contrary, following such scholars as Bruno Latour and Katherine Hayles, these developments must be considered as the result of a particular feedback process that includes technical aspects as well as the definition of design problems around an informational ontology and epistemology. The understanding of the intellectual foundations of digital architecture is crucial not only to promote a critical regard of its productions but to imagine scenarios for a viable cybernetic practice of computer-mediated architectural design.

summary The contemporary “built environment” as conceived by designers – be it actual or virtual; be it architecture, landscape, industrial products or, more purely, art – is increasingly generated using powerful computational tools that are shaping the culture of the design professions, so much so that the phrase “digital culture” aptly applies. Designers are rightly inclined to believe that the emerging contemporary landscape – especially in thriving global cities like New York, London and Tokyo – has recently been and will continue to be shaped in important ways by digital design. That will surely be the case. However, design does not exist in a material vacuum. Someone pays for it. This essay argues that the primary shaper of global cities today is another “digital culture”, one defined by the confluence of professions and institutions that constitute our global financial markets. The essay explores the common origins of these two cultures – design and finance; the prescient insights of Archigram into the cybernetic future of cities; the spatial implications of nomadic “digitized” capital and the hazards of desensitizing – in many ways, dematerializing – the professional practices of design and finance. The purpose of the essay is not to establish primacy of one over the other. Especially in the case of urban design, they are interdependent. The purpose is to explore the connection.

title Interactive Hemostasis Modeling in Urban Network Design

summary This paper describes a type of project that images a city as it might exist given the integration of hemostatic procedures within pedestrian networks during emergencies requiring full-scale egress from an urban core. It articulates the steps taken to integrate a pre-existing C++ hemostasis model (C. Jacob, 2008) into Maya software in order to describe how the project operates on a computational level. By projecting these agent-based logics directly into/onto each pedestrian in the city (the smallest unit of the system), egress-oriented infrastructure can shift from being extensively predetermined in form (concrete barriers, metal railing, police barricades, etc.), to something more intensively defined, real-time, and locally on-demand. These procedures are situated within a larger schema based on the structural principles of Norbert Wiener's cybernetic feedback loops, that acknowledge and allow for hybrid (top-down + bottom-up) awareness and control within systems. The project attempts to ally itself with emerging forms of network design with similar structural typologies supported through the use of personal mobile devices (PMDs) in urban environments.

summary In his work ‘Cybernetics’, mathematician Norbert Wiener (1941) pointed to the interdisciplinary areas between the sciences as a promising field for research; embracing this notion of ‘synthesis’ fifty years later, the research discussed here uses the cornice, a typical element of Classical Architecture as the role-model for a series of experiments with light and shadow in nurbs software. This process encourages the development of digital design methodologies that go beyond current stylistic boundaries and hopes to set a possible threshold towards future design-based exploration.

summary The choice of a chord and its execution should be regarded as a must and not left to arbitrary wish or superficial speculation. (Johannes Itten, 1961) The paper describes a modular concept for the IT-support of planning practice using BIM (Building Information Modelling) and a parameterized building model. The platform used is the modularized software concept for architectural planning in existing built contexts (prototype software FREAK). The current progress in the development of a reasoned support of planning tasks is described in this paper in more detail. The system consists of a series of software prototypes which are linked to the BIM, utilize the specific data within and demonstrate the value of a consistent and extendable CAD-model. The “Colored Architecture” software prototype is one such design-support module of the software platform and enables the designer to experiment with the parameters colour, light and materials in architectural space. This module supports experimentation, assessment and realization of colours and materials in the architectural design process on a new quality. For instance, the integration of “live radiosity” light simulation allows a qualified and interactive assessment and evaluation of colours and materials in near-real lighting conditions. The paper also details further software prototypes, modules and concepts including building surveying and the design of self-supporting domed structures.

summary A Digital Fabrication Production System (DFPS) is a concept describing a set of processes, tools, and resources that will be able to produce an artifact according to a design, fast, cheap, and easy, independently of location. A DFPS project is a complex assembly of custom parts that is delivered by a network of fabrication and assembly processes. This network is called the value chain. The workflow concept of a DFPS is the following: begin design process with a custom geometric form; decompose it into constructible parts; send the part files for fabrication to various locations; transport all parts at the construction site at the right time; finally, assemble the final artifact. Conceptually it means that based on a well structured value chain we could build anything we want, at anyplace, at controllable cost and quality. The goals of a DFPS are the following: custom shapes, controllable lead time, controllable quality, controllable cost, easiness of fabrication, and easiness of assembly. Simply stated this means to build any form, anywhere, accurately, cheap, fast, and easy. Unfortunately, the reality with current Digital Fabrication (DF) projects is rather disappointing: They take more time than what was planned, they get more expensive than what was expected, they involve great risk and uncertainty, and finally they are too complex to plan, understand, and manage. Moreover, most of these problems are discovered during production when it is already late for correction. However, there is currently no systematic approach to evaluate difficulty of production of DF projects in Architecture. Most of current risk assessment methods are based on experience gathered from previous similar cases. But it is the premise of mass customization that projects can be radically different. Assembly incompatibilities are currently addressed by building physical mockups. But physical mockups cause a significant loss in both time and cost. All these problems suggest that an introduction of a DFPS for mass customization in architecture needs first an integrated theory of assembly and management control. Evaluating feasibility of a DF project has two main problems: first, how to evaluate assemblability of the design; second, how to evaluate performance of the value chain. Assemblability is a system’s structure problem, while performance is a system’s dynamics problem. Structure of systems has been studied in the field of Systems Engineering by Network Analysis methods such as the Design Structure Matrix (DSM) (Steward 1981), and the liaison graph (Whitney 2004), while dynamics of systems have been studied by System Dynamics (Forrester 1961). Can we define a formal method to evaluate the difficulty of production of an artifact if we know the artifact’s design and the production system’s structure? This paper formulates Attribute Process Methodology (APM); a method for assessing feasibility of a DFPS project that combines Network Analysis to evaluate assemblability of the design with System Dynamics to evaluate performance of the value chain.

summary The paper which is proposed here will introduce an ongoing research project aiming to research data mining as a methodology of knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis. To address the increasing multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires a multidisciplinary approach to urban analysis. This research is an attempt to establish a link between knowledge discovery methodologies and automated urban feature analysis. Therefore, in the scope of this research we apply data mining methodologies for urban analysis. Data mining is defined as to extract important patterns and trends from raw data (Witten and Frank, 2005). When applied to discover relationships between urban attributes, data mining can constitute a methodology for the analysis of multi-dimensional relational complexity of urban environments (Gil, Montenegro, Beirao and Duarte, 2009) The theoretical motivation of the research is derived by the lack of explanatory urban knowledge which is an issue since 1970’s in the area of urban research. This situation is mostly associated with deductive methods of analysis. The analysis of urban system from the perspective of few interrelated factors, without considering the multi-dimensionality of the system in a deductive fashion was not been explanatory enough. (Jacobs, 1961, Lefebvre, 1970 Harvey, 1973) To address the multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires the consideration of diverse spatial, social, economic, cultural, morphological, environmental, political etc. features of urban entities. The main claim is that, in urban analysis, there is a need to advance from traditional one dimensional (Marshall, 2004) description and classification of urban forms (e.g. Land-use maps, Density maps) to the consideration of the simultaneous multi-dimensionality of urban systems. For this purpose, this research proposes a methodology consisting of the application of data mining as a knowledge discovery method into a GIS based conceptual urban database built out of official real data of Beyoglu. Generally, the proposed methodology is a framework for representing and analyzing urban entities represented as objects with properties (attributes). It concerns the formulation of an urban entity’s database based on both available and non-available (constructed from available data) data, and then data mining of spatial and non-spatial attributes of the urban entities. Location or position is the primary reference basis for the data that is describing urban entities. Urban entities are; building floors, buildings, building blocks, streets, geographically defined districts and neighborhoods etc. Urban attributes are district properties of locations (such as land-use, land value, slope, view and so forth) that change from one location to another. Every basic urban entity is unique in terms of its attributes. All the available qualitative and quantitative attributes that is relavant (in the mind of the analyst) and appropriate for encoding, can be coded inside the computer representation of the basic urban entity. Our methodology is applied by using the real and official, the most complex, complete and up-to-dataset of Beyoglu (a historical neighborhood of Istanbul) that is provided by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB). Basically, in our research, data mining in the context of urban data is introduced as a computer based, data-driven, context-specific approach for supporting analysis of urban systems without relying on any existing theories. Data mining in the context of urban data; • Can help in the design process by providing site-specific insight through deeper understanding of urban data. • Can produce results that can assist architects and urban planners at design, policy and strategy levels. • Can constitute a robust scientific base for rule definition in urban simulation applications such as urban growth prediction systems, land-use simulation models etc. In the paper, firstly we will present the framework of our research with an emphasis on its theoretical background. Afterwards we will introduce our methodology in detail and finally we will present some of important results of data mining analysis processed in Rapid Miner open-source software. Specifically, our research define a general framework for knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis and enable the usage of GIS and data mining as complementary applications in urban feature analysis. summary “Style” has long been an important index to observe the design thinking of designers in architecture. Gombrich (1968) defined style as a particular selection from the alternatives when doing things; Ackerman (1963) considered that a distiguishable ensemble of certain characteristics we call a style; Schapiro (1961) pointed out that style is constant forms, and sometimes the constant elements, qualities and expression; Kirsch (1998), Cha and Gero (1999) thought of style as a form element and shape pattern. As Simon and others referred to, style emerged from the process of problem solving, Chan (1994, 2001) ever devised a serious of experiments to set up the operational definitions of style, further five factors that relate to generating styles. Owing to that the greater part of sketches and drawings in the design process couldn’t be replaced by computer-aided design systems (Eisentraut, 1997), designers must shift between different problem-solving methods while facing different design problems. The purpose in this research is to discuss the influences of computer usage on style generation and style recognition: The employment of certain procedural factors that occurred in the design processes that using conventional media is different from the ones that using computer media? Do personal styles emerge while designers shifting between different media in the design processes? Does any unusual phenomenon emerge while accustomed CAD-systems designers recognizing a style?

summary A shape grammar formalism is elaborated for the Vienna Workshop (Wiener Werkstaette) designer Josef Hoffmann’s two designs. Early instances of abstract expressionism are traced in Hoffman’s works by investigating stylistic parallels through shape rules and computations. The analysis of Hoffmann’s two works are carried out in parallel to Terry Knight’s analysis of De Stijl artists Georges Vantongerloo and Fritz Glarner paintings with the normal form grammars.

summary Current research treats walkability in cities as an urban asset, to be identified by formal methods in order to let people benefit from it. In this paper, we take an activity-based view on the subject, arguing that walkability is not an end in itself but must always be seen from the standpoint of a specific activity to be performed. More precisely, we look at the specific walkability when seeking to perform an activity 'a' (e.g. shopping) within a given time budget 'b' (e.g. 15 minutes). Based on these two factors, we have devised a grid-based analysis method that computes transitions between grid cells. As result, we get a walkability map that extends the traditional 'proximity-based' understanding of neighborhoods by the notion of goal-directed pedestrians. To argue for the applicability of our approach, we showcase i it in two cities with different urban structure (Yerevan and Wiener Neustadt) before concluding.

summary A column is an archetypal constituent of architecture which historically underwent constant reiteration in accordance with the prevalent architectural style, material culture or technical and structural possibilities. The project reimagined this architectural element through harnessing the synergies of digital design, textile logic, and contemporary biotechnology. Textile materiality and aesthetic are deeply rooted in architectural history as a soft and ephemeral antipode to rigid building materials. An investigation in historic mechanical hand-knitting techniques allowed to extract their underlying structural and geometric logic to develop a structural optimisation pipeline with a graded yarn as a base material and a geometric optimization based on local distribution of knitting patterns. Bacterially driven biocalcification was applied to transform the soft textile structure into a rigid material. Hereby an active textile microbiome was established through colonizing of the yarn with the bacterium S. pasteurii which successively precipitated calcite on microscale within the textile substrate hence ultimately influencing the global structural behaviour of the column.

summary Volume modeling, finite element computation and spatial information systems have a common basis in topology, especially in the theory of complexes which are higher dimensional generalization of graphs. A complex is a topological space having a certain algebraic structure called “chain complex” and due to its similarity to real world buildings a special kind of complexes are even called “buildings” in mathematics. So it would be consequent to base a building information system upon this theory or at least try to do so. Some manipulations and queries of such spaces can then be expressed by mappings which are similar to complex-morphisms and generalize the well known Euler operators. Other practical useful operations like assigning a detail to a spatial element (“refinement”), hiding details at lower scale views (“coarsening”) or spatial versioning, however, need a somewhat different kind of mappings. This paper shows a simple relational database representation of a finite complex as a basis for a database backed building information system. The implementation of operations on such a relational complex in Java will also be shown.

summary This paper documents an ongoing research that combines recent developments in the field of Rapid Prototyping Technology for a materialisation of composite pneumatic models. The ability to create three dimensional prints with varying surface materials has the potential to assign the RP model a different role in the design process. The implementation of material performance, configured through CAD driven geometry, allows for an emergence of dynamical models that are freed from conventional representational function.
