summary With the IBM Research Center in La Gaude, France (1960-1962), the architect Marcel Breuer pioneered a novel industrial approach towards modular construction using precast façade elements for on-site assembly, combining load-bearing and solar control functions in their configuration. This industrial production method involved a high level of standardization, which was a practical response to the need for rapid and cost-effective construction systems. However, this standardization limited the ability to create custom elements to meet specific local requirements, such as variations in solar exposure. To overcome this limitation, new methods of Additive Manufacturing in Construction (AMC) could enhance design flexibility, allowing for bespoke designs while still maintaining industrialisable production processes. This paper draws inspiration from Breuer's building design with the aim to expand the concept of element prefabrication by incorporating performance-based and locally customized design approaches supported by AMC technology. As such, the authors present the method and results of an experimental case study for multi-scale-differentiation of building envelope elements, which design was informed by solar radiation simulations and AMC-related boundary conditions. The research describes an algorithmic based design-to-production workflow combining computational design and simulation methods using geometry-based graphical methods for solar control and solar radiation simulations for form-based changes, leveraging the potential of Selective Cement Activation (SCA) as an AMC technology. The workflow was tested and evaluated on behalf of the design and additive manufacturing of a building envelope element at full building scale.

title Perspective Vienna – A Comparison of Planning Scenarios and Real Development

summary With the suspension of national boarders in unions of nations, cities and their regions gain in significance for the economic, social and cultural development. This is particularly valid for Vienna, which lies close to the eastern boarder of the European Union, which should fall with the enlargement of EU in the near future. Of prominent importance is therefore to obtain a comprehensive understanding between proposed and defined aims for an urban development, the related measures and their extent ofimplementations and their actual or real effects. This paper attempts to give a strategic analysis of the Viennese urban and traffic development programs, from 1962, 1972, 1984 and 1994, on the one hand, and the data analysis of the statistical year books beginning from 1960 until 2000, on the other. The results show that adjustments have been made not only in response to certain trends, but also to a change of philosophy of urban development. It can be seen that certain assumptions of, for example, economic and transport measures can have the opposite outcome in relation to the intended objectives. Hence, one main question remains to beanswered: How should Vienna deal with the challenges ahead, to secure and foster a sustainable development under such circumstances on a long-term basis. In this respect, some measures are given, which should make it possible to overcome successfully these challenges.

summary The study focuses on early attempts to deal with complex physical environments through a comparative analysis of two canonic projects that combine architectural design with cybernetic theories: (1) "The Fun Palace", by British architect Cedric Price, 1962; and (2) "A Pattern Language", by architectural theorist Christopher Alexander, 1979. This study suggests that both projects dared to advance the relationship between architecture and cybernetics in order to create active reciprocity between architectural design and cybernetic system theories. Drawing on ideas and terms from systems theory, we suggest using a cybernetic system diagram to compare the two projects. We compare the work of Alexander and Price through the terminology of current technologies in order to better understand the reciprocity between the two fields. Such terms include feedback loop, optimization and translation processes, input and output, influence on the environment, automation and user interaction.

summary This article describes the use of digital photogrammetric techniques for the survey of Chapel Nossa Senhora da Escada, declared heritage by IPHAN . Institute for National Artistic and Historical Heritage . in 1962. It is one of the firsts chapels built in Brazil, in the middle of sixteenth century. In this paper, we present and discuss the procedures used in this building surveying, since the planning of the measurements until the creation of the photorealistic model in PhotoModeler software. Finally, the accuracy of the 3D model is verified using control points measured by topographical methods.

summary This paper presents the architectural modeling as a process of augmenting spatial information; a chain of actions that leads from a sketched idea to the elaborated model. A symbolic constraint solver tool is connected to traditional CAD techniques, as well as to a data representation scheme efficient for architectural elements. The orchestration of the available and added tools allows the designer to ìedit ideasî fast, keeping in mind that different design profiles require adaptive tools to support the varying methodologies. Until the moment that automated design will be both possible and desirable, machines can really shorten the time needed to visualize design ideas in the sense of a handy but non-decisive ìcalculatorî. The discussion is built around illustrated examples from the implemented constraint based modeler.

summary Geometrically complex building components‚ reliance on high-touch implementation often results in tedious information reprocessing. Recent use of Mixed Reality (MR) in architectural practices, however, can reduce data translation and potentially increase design-to-build efficiency. This paper uses Aurora, a single-story residential building for 2021 China‚s Solar Decathlon Competition, as a demonstrator to evaluate the performance of on-site holographic building construction. This paper firstly reviews recent studies of MR in architectural design and practice. It then describes an MR-aided construction process of Aurora's non-standard building envelope and rooftop mounting structure, where in-situ holographic registration, human-machine cooperation, and as-built analysis are discussed. This paper concludes by stating that MR technologies provide unskilled implementers with a handy approach to materialise complex designs. The research was guided by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially aligning with the GOAL 9 which seeks innovations in industry and infrastructure.

summary The university student faces multiple challenges to acquiring knowledge for their degrees. We study the ways the architecture student at Universidad de Sonora overcomes such difficulties, in a process of academic resilience, through the use of a video tutorial repository covering topics related to architecture scale model fabrication, among other study materials. This repository meets the demand for web-based, Spanish-language study materials. It was tested in terms of usefulness and acceptability: video tutorials were not only considered helpful by the students, but a handy tool when attempting to learn new abilities and knowledge, or reinforce those they already acquired.

summary In the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) sector, the use of point cloud data is not a novelty. Usually employed to retrieve data for inspecting construction sites or retrofitting pre-existing buildings, sensors like LiDAR cameras have been known to practitioners such as architects and engineers for a while now. In recent years, the growing interest in 3D data acquisition for autonomous vehicles, robotic and extended reality (XR) applications has brought to the market new compact, performant, and more accessible hardware leveraging different technologies able to provide low-cost sensing systems. Nevertheless, point clouds obtained from such sensors must be processed to extract valuable data for any design or fabrication application. Unfortunately, most advanced point cloud processing tools are written in low-level languages and are hardly accessible to the average designer or maker. Therefore, we present Cockroach: a link between computer-aided design (CAD) modeling software and low-level point cloud processing libraries. The main objective is an adaptation to C# .NET via Grasshopper visual scripting interface and C++ single-line commands in native Rhinoceros workspaces. Cockroach has proved to be a handy design tool in integrating building components with unpredictable geometries such as raw wood or mineral scraps into new design and industrial fabrication processes.

summary We have grown accustomed to performing elaborate queries on textual data, e.g. via online search engines, file system managers and word processors. In the past decade, retrieval methods that also work on non-textual data have become mainstream (e.g. face recognition software). Sadly, these developments have so far not caught on for data mining within geometrical data, e.g. 3D meshes generated in the course of architectural work. Specifically during data exchange, such a search functionality would be handy, as it often happens that geometry is exported but object identity is lost - think, for example, of generative geometry or exported BIM data. In this paper, we present an example of such a search functionality, based on angular search. Our method is inspired by regular expressions, a string matching technique commonly employed for matching substrings.
