summary Daylight is one of the indoor environmental qualities that most influence students’ development in learning in a classroom. However, many existing schools do not optimize daylight. Indeed, standardized façade designs result in wasted energy in artificial lighting while daylight could be harvested. This study provides a diagnostic of illuminance levels and their distribution in a typological classroom based on field data for a school in the central-south region of Chile. The government built these schools during the second half of the 20th century, and they are still operational, maintaining the same original façade, with no differentiation regarding orientation. Through simulations, it analyzes potential retrofit strategies to identify the ones that could result in better light distribution and autonomy. Facing a lack of local standards for lighting levels in schools’ classrooms, international standards are used as thresholds for actual lighting levels and a series of retrofit scenarios.

title Digital diagrams and visual communication in architecture [Diagramas digitales y comunicación visual en arquitectura]

summary Today’s architectural practice is specially based on diagrams to materialize its concepts, revealing at the same time the variety of cognitive styles used in architecture. They are usually employed to generate the strategic conditions to face the project, and in extreme cases they are immediately translated into architecture. As representations, they have evolved from an analogical condition towards a new recent variant, that is, the digital diagram. The present paper consists on identifying the digital qualities of diagrams and proposes certain analytical parameters to study the diagrammatic activity through the contemporary architectural project.

summary The aim of this article is to recognize the methods of environmental control used by the master of the "constructivist" movement Konstantin Melnikov in a Melnikov's house, a creation whose architectural value has been highlighted on several occasions, it also seeks to demonstrate through modern climate software simulation and analysis tools that in the early 20th century Melnikov consciously used environmental control methods, which makes the afore-mentioned construction a historical example of bioclimatic architecture meant for Russian climate. In order to assess this topic a digital model has been built and different energy simulations were carried out using software such as Climate Consultant, Design Builder and ArchiCAD.

summary This is a research project in progress sponsored by the Universidad de Belgrano; it is to be completed by the end of 2001. The work comprises the observation of design processes done by students using manual and digital means following the same phases (study of the context and program, parti alternatives, fixation of a general scheme, formal and material development). Each of these phases is tackled by students according to their preferences, availability of equipment and degree of training in the use of digital media. An evident drawback for students is that the possiblities of testing design alternatives are reduced because of low expertise in representation. It is our intention to develop know-how about the use of this mixture of media in the most appropriate way for a design assignment, like the one we have for the use of graphic representations, study models, etc. We should be able to describe in detail the relations between traditional and digital representation considering both as means for reaching a more complete knowledge of the object we are designing. Thus we can evaluate the possibilities of articulation between both systems and the best way to exploit these relations for didactical ends.

summary General outline: Typology has provided architects basic design resources in the past. Repertories have been created by comparing and establishing relations among a multiplicity of examples: these repertories have been used as the basis for new inventions. Research on type establishes the foundations for organized knowledge that can be accumulated, shared, and enriched by successive designs. We are testing our assumption that CAD is a specially adequate tool for the transformation and manipulation of type in the early stages of the design process. Goals: Our Seminar/Studio gives those who take part in it a renewed vision of type as a basic disposition that can be subject to dynamic transformations. The use of CAD will allow the participants to experiment and verify design decisions on the grounds of a systematic use of typological precedents. Methodology: Starting with definite examples of contemporary architecture and the design theory backing the examples selected, the seminar/ studio is developed in eight studio sessions, exploring different dimensions leading to the “parti”. It is meant for experienced designers, both advanced students and graduates. The first experimental seminar of two sessions took place in November 1999. A more developed version is under way in August, 2000.

summary We are facing a constant growth in 3D GIS, and its interaction with CAD, VR and CG, influence each other more than ever. In this context, 3D urban models can interactively assist in any step of a decision making process. Urban planners can benefit from 3D urban models in a way never thought before. PC technology , free 3D interactive viewers and VRML offer low cost implementations. Data coming from cadastral updates in Argentina are an invaluable source of digital data and building height attributes are included on that. In that way, tabular or attribute data can be linked to 3D graphic data. Geographic Information Systems can add to these 3D urban models all the benefits of attribute data plus its spatial analysis capabilities. Queries of any kind, and links to hypertext, planning documents can enhance the information provided by this "virtual world". Finally, regarding communication aspects, Interactive design and decision making can be reached in a much easier way as 3D is better than 2D. If we consider that 3D urban models can easily be browsed in VRML we have then the enormous potential of collaborative design through internet and intranet.

summary In this study, we proposed a concept of virtual and real-field construction management systems (VR-Coms), which is integrated with virtual construction simulation, planning, scheduling, and performance management systems to evaluate productivity and safety in virtual simulated and real-field constructions. And, we built up a computational environment to develop the VR-Coms. The VR-Coms offer supporting modules for learning and discovering solutions with objective to manage construction at right speed with improved humanware and constructability. The configuration of VR-Coms is described. This paper also shows an application of agent theory to construction management.

summary Technical competence in computer technology has become a conditio sine qua non of landing a job at a respectable architectural practice. By itself, though, this does not imply that all architectural practices are now doing their work in a revolutionary way. In their overwhelming majority they have been forced into the digital domain by the ubiquity of technology itself. The digital file has replaced the drawing as the information backbone in building profession. However, the common convertible currency of this information down the construction process is still lines on paper, albeit physically produced by incredibly sophisticated devices.

The computer is a facilitator of design ideas, but by itself, is not a creator of content. The primary responsibility of the design studio is the creation of content. It is the implementation of theory and critical analysis which should be the core concern of studio instruction. Given the limited time students are exposed to design studio it would seem appropriate, then, that the digital tools, which facilitate the design process, be taught separately, so as not to dilute the design studios importance. Likewise, this separation should allow the student to concentrate attention on Digital Design as a comprehensive process, beginning with initial massing studies and ending with high resolution presentation drawings. The burden of learning this new process is difficult as well as time consuming. Students are generally struggling to learn how to design, much less to design on the computer. In addition, the current lack of digital skills on the part of design faculty makes it difficult to create a level of consistency in teaching digital design. Compounding these problems is the cost to architectural departments of providing hardware and software resources sufficient to have a computer on every studio desk.

summary This paper presents a study of the comparison of tangible user interfaces and graphical user interfaces on designers’ cognitive actions. We conducted individual design experiments using the protocol analysis method. The results reveal that designers using the tabletop system with 3D blocks reasoned more about spatial relationships among 3D objects, while the designers using the keyboard and mouse reasoned more about individual 3D objects.

summary Large design projects, such as those in the AEC domain, involve collaboration between designers from many different design disciplines in varying locations. Existing tools for developing and documenting designs of buildings and other artifacts tend to focus on supporting a single user from a single discipline. This paper introduces DesignWorld, a prototype system for enabling collaboration between designers from different disciplines who may be in different physical locations. DesignWorld consists of a 3D virtual world augmented with a number of web-based communication and design tools. DesignWorld uses agent technology to maintain different views of a single design in order to support multidisciplinary collaboration and address issues such as multiple representations of objects, versioning, ownership and relationships between objects from different disciplines.

summary The impact of collaborative design in virtual environments on the behaviour of designers depends on the nature of the design task and the resources available to the designers. By introducing new technology, we can identify the kinds of positive impacts that should be integrated, and the kinds of negative impacts that should be eliminated, in order to improve the collaborative design environment. We studied designers collaborating in three environments: (1) face-to-face with their current design and communication tools (pen and paper), (2) a shared remote drawing system (Group Board) with synchronous voice and video conference and (3) a 3D virtual world with synchronous voice and video conference. Collaborative design sessions of 5 architect pairs were video recorded. They respectively worked on separate design briefs in the three different design settings. Protocol analysis was used to study and compare collaborative design behaviour.

summary This paper examines the role of computational simulation of material processes with robotics fabrication, with the intent of examining its implications for architectural design and construction. Simulation techniques have been adopted in the automotive industry amongst others, advancing their design and manufacturing outputs. At present, architecture is yet to explore the full potential of this technology and their techniques. The need for simulation is evident in exploring the behaviours of materials and their relative properties. Currently, there is a distinct disconnect between the virtual model and its fabricated counterpart. Through research in simulation, we can begin to understand and clearly visualize the relationship between material behaviours and properties that can lead to a closer correlation between the digital design and its fabricated outcome. As the first phase of investigation, the material of clay is used due to its volatile qualities embedded within the material behaviour. The input geometry is constrained to rudimentary extruded forms in order to not obscure the behaviour of the material, but rather allow for it to drive the machine-making process.

summary The article presents the author's original Spatial Continuity Diagram SCD method. The method uses digital techniques to study the urban and architectural features of existing urban structures. The results of these studies are intended to facilitate design decisions regarding the harmonious development of existing urban buildings. The article also discusses a special software for conducting SCD study. The practical application of the research was discussed on the example of a design and implementation of one of the single-family housing estates.

summary This work is developing at the moment, tries to find elements that allow arm to a frame of reference for a doctoral thesis that studies the processes of architectonic design and the transformations that this one within the factories of education with the introduction of the digital representation undergoes. It is a study that it initiates in the 2003 with an applied cuasi-experiment to students of the masters in architecture of the Independent University of Nuevo León (Monterrey, México), (work presented/displayed in the forum SIGraDi 2003). Taking into account the results obtained in that one first work it was decided not to take part and to force the student to work with a specific type of tool (digital or traditional), but to leave them chose the work tool freely, observing his photographic process by means of video-recordings, registries and personal interviews with the purpose of explaining because of his processes. The registries were taken in the Factory from semestral Architectonic Design 5°, of the Independent University of Aguascalientes (Mexico).

summary This paper sets that in order to get a real sense in digital animations, it is requires to deal the representation and story like cinema do it, instead of only reproduction of moving images. Thus animated presentations of architectural projects should concentrate to tell main values and spatial qualities than technical information of building. The paper explains characteristics of cinematographic story, visual techniques and planning procedures. Remarking the search of narrative continuity and relationship to spectator’s imagination. Also it describes the experience to film a documentary of a real building in the city of Valparaiso and digital animations of same building. It discuses results of questionnaires taken to students about perception of architectural characteristics watching the documentary, simple animations and a animated presentation made with filmmaking concepts. This comparison showed a higher appraisal of architectural virtues than understanding of constructive characteristics, in digital media with narrative conditions.

summary The purpose of this study is to develop a Computer Aided Facility Management (CAFM) system to assist the optimal Life Cycle Management (LCM) business, especially in the repair and renewal planning works of the inhabited building Life Cycle Cost (LCC). This system is also useful for annual, mid and long term facility maintenance budget planning. Major steps of this study are as follows: (1) A Study on the actual process of the LCM business was undertaken to determine the required functions of the CAFM system. (2) We surveyed the calculation process of the LCC and examined the data processing method in order to determine an efficient LCC calculation method for the CAFM system. (3) Based on the above result, we developed each function required for the CAFM system. (4) The CAFM system was developed by unifying the above functions in a network browser environment such as data transaction management between database, LCC calculation and graphical representation applications. (5) We evaluate the CAFM system by using case studies of LCM works on actual buildings. This system contributes to the efficient maintenance works of the LCC, and is able to support the appropriate scheduling of LCM works.
