summary Activities in the building industry in Europe concentrate increasingly on a combination of renovation and new-building. A prerequisite for comprehensive IT supported design and planning in the context of existing buildings is both the use of on-site computer- aided surveying techniques and the integration of all professional disciplines in an integrated information and communication system. The starting point is often the building survey on site. An examination of currently available IT tools and hardware shows insufficient support for planning within existing built contexts. Surveying equipment has been derived from other disciplines without being modified to cater for the specific needs of building surveying. This paper describes a concept for computer-aided digital building surveying equipment based upon a wearable computer and AR to close the gap between specialist equipment adapted for use in building surveying and the need for simple straightforward surveying equipment for architects and engineers.

summary Future tasks for the building trade in Germany will be more and more a combination of the fields of revitalization and new building projects. Prerequisite for computer-aided planing for existing buildings is both, the use of onsite computer-aided measurement and the integration of all specialists involved in the building process. Existing approaches for this problem are not yet satisfying. The aim of this research project is twofold: to design a practice-relevant software concept and to develop various prototypic systems, for a structured way of capturing and organizing building-related information about existing buildings in digital form. The research is oriented towards existing buildings, in particular residential and commercial buildings. This project is a special branch of SFB524. The project is founded by "Deutsche Forschungsgesellschaft (DFG)".

Current approaches to these issues are unsatisfactory. Methods and techniques in renovation work are being investigated as part of ongoing research at the Bauhaus- Universität Weimar (SFB524 - “Collaborative research center 524 „Materials and Structure in Revitalization of Buildings”). A sub-group (SFB524 - D2 „Planning-Relevant Digital Building Surveying and Information System”) is currently investigating the possibilities of computer-aided building surveying and of joint communcation platforms for engineering disciplines (www.uni-weimar.de/sfb: May 2001). The objective is the development of a general approach for the renovation of buildings. The paper discusses concepts and requirements for a computer-aided system supporting the entire surveying process from the initial site visit to its use in a CAD system.

summary CA(A)D systems are nowadays a part of everyday architectural practice and have completely replaced drawing with pen and T-square. The standard functions of such systems are (usually) sufficient for the everyday needs of practical work. The question is: can CA(A)D systems be adapted to improve work efficiency for specific users or applications such as those of the architect? Most current CA(A)D systems already provide some level of support for individual adaptation however these are rarely exploited by the end users. This paper discusses the teaching of skills for adapting and extending existing CA(A)D systems in current architectural education. In addition to the teaching of programming and operational skills, the course also examines the critical examination of CA(A)D systems and the formulation of user requirements (analysis), the search for existing solutions, functions or extensions (research) and the technical adaptation or extension of the system (software development). Using examples from current coursework, the paper illustrates both process and results of teaching practice.

title The Computer Integrated Road Construction project

summary This paper is about the "Computer Integrated Road Construction" (CIRC) project, which is a Brite-EuRam III funded project, lasting 1997–1999, aiming at introducing a new generation of control and monitoring tools for road pavements construction. These new tools are designed to bring on the sites significant improvements by creating a digital link between design office and job site. The first part of the paper describes the background of the project, which gathers seven European partners from five different countries, and gives the objectives of the project, in general and for each of the two targeted products: one for the compactors (CIRCOM) and one for the asphalt pavers (CIRPAV). Then, the two prototypes are described, each of them being broken down into three main sub-systems: the ground sub-system (GSS), the on-board sub-system (OB) and the positioning sub-system (POS). The expected benefits for the different users are also presented and quantified. The central part of the paper is devoted to the main technical innovations that have been developed in the frame of the project: universal vector database for road equipment guidance, multi-machine functionalities of CIRCOM and the two positioning systems which are actually the technological keys of the systems. Finally, the state of progress of the developments of the two CIRC products and the first commercial success achieved in parallel are presented.

title A new facility for testing accurate positioning systems for road construction robotics

summary The first part of the paper gives a definition of positioning in the context of road work sites and stresses the advantages offered by the new generation of positioning systems. A logical classification of these systems is also proposed. The `global positioning system' (GPS) technique, as one of the most promising techniques, is detailed. The main point of the paper is the presentation of a new test facility for positioning systems which has been set up at the `Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées' (Central Laboratory of Roads and Bridges). First, its principle is described, based on the re-construction of a 6D reference trajectory to which the measurements of the system in test are compared. Then, the operation of the facility and the post-treatment software which has been specially developed for it are described. Finally, the results of some recent studies are given, results which would have been hard to obtain without using the SESSYL facility. During the first study, the facility was used to establish an accurate time-model of the vertical error and this model allowed us to propose an innovative method for improving the vertical accuracy. During the second study, SESSYL proved its capability of differentiating several state-of-the-art GPS receivers of the same category.

summary This paper is an account of the façade rationalisation strategy developed at Gehry Technologies for mitigating the tradeoffs between project constructability and the aesthetic implications of arranging flat panels over a complex surface. The strategy outlined was developed as the result of the digital building delivery of the Museo Soumaya façade in Mexico City designed by Fernando Romero LAR. This report documents the development process of a method for obtaining relevant construction information flows enabling the assembly of the façade system by a third-party sub-contractor in support of the façade system coordination. This report concludes on a method using bespoke software for extending the parametric modelling system Digital Project™ in the design support role of obtaining an aesthetically pleasing arrangement of flat hexagonal panels over a freeform surface.

title Are European cities becoming similar?

summary The paper discusses city specific development patterns to overcome todays transport problems. The results are based on recent andongoing research activities at TUW-IVV and ITS. At previous CORP-conferences, we presented the basics and the development of aplanning support tool to find optimal policy packages in urban transport and land use (Emberger, 1998), (Pfaffenbichler, Emberger, 2001). The core of this planning support tool is a dynamic land use and transport interaction model. This model, which we refer to as Sketch Planning Model (SPM), is embedded into an appraisal and optimisation framework. The SPM and this framework were developed in the recently finished European Union funded research project PROSPECTS1. Case studies with this planning supporttool were performed within PROSPECTS for the cities Edinburgh, Helsinki, Madrid, Oslo, Stockholm and Vienna. These cities are principally comparable in regards of their status (capitals and major business and education centres), but different in their size, population density, transport system etc. A set of policy instruments like public transport improvements, car traffic restrictions, and infrastructure provision was available to formulate strategies to reduce negative impacts of transport and to increase welfare. The overall objective was a sustainable development of the city. Although the instruments and the goals are similar in all investigatedcites, different solutions were adequate. The solutions vary in regard of spatial implementation, implementation time and level of implementation. The paper will highlight some reasons for the different development paths of the cities. As well the comparison of the do nothing scenario as the comparison of the most feasible policy strategies shows that European cities are different, need different solutions for their problems and will stay different in the future.

summary Collective Design seeks to explore how new forms of Collective Intelligence, arising from the web, allows mass participation in design. Regarding design we have a wellestablished grounding for understanding how design works through the use of representations. Likewise, collective intelligence via certain crowdsourcing examples has demonstrated that a diverse crowd can trump ability groups, when the conditions are right. In the literature, crowdsourcing is the leading lens bridging design with collective intelligence. However in crowdsourcing design there is less focus on the role of shared representations, subsequently any collective diversity is mitigated by the models that govern the extraction of this intelligence. We propose that more effective design in collective intelligence lies in the crowd’s ability to generate meaningful contributions via the content of shared representations. In order to investigate this, the current paper examines data collected from a pilot study in which a representationally rich online collaborative presentation tool is used to provide a shared design space. The analysis presented applies our previously established semiotic framework to identify potential patterns in the meaningful communication of image based design information.

summary The quality of computer generated images of three-dimensional scenes depends on the shading technique used to paint the objects on the cathode-ray tube screen. The shading algorithm itself depends in part on the method for modeling the object, which also determines the hidden surface algorithm. The various methods of object modeling, shading, and hidden surface removal are thus strongly interconnected. Several shading techniques corresponding to different methods of object modeling and the related hidden surface algorithms are presented here. Human visual perception and the fundamental laws of optics are considered in the development of a shading rule that provides better quality and increased realism in generated images

summary Generative design system develops the purpose that is can generate a large number of design plans. Generative design system can let designer unceasingly explore the new design plans. At present generative design system, they all only have one kind of generative mechanism. Therefore, one can’t provide enough feasibility for designer to explore new plans. So, in this paper, we propose a Co-Generative Form System (COgenForm). COgenForm is a 3D form exploration system that invokes two set of generative mechanisms. This system used co-evolutional characteristics to build the steps and framework of co-generative design process. This system includes two groups of generative mechanisms and these will evolve with each other. Using this system, the form exploration and generation process can be more dynamic and more alternatives.

summary Parameterization has shown potential in creating architectural projects and verification steps. The objective is to develop a parametric and generative tool, containing the urban parameters of the Master Plan of a municipality, to assist in the phase of field study. The model is developed with the aid of Revit software and Dynamo plug-in. The results converge to a tool where users enter the lot’s dimensions and zoning, and it applies the other parameters. It is possible to analyze the constructive potential quickly, avoiding errors. The parameterization process is emphasized, encouraging the user to apply new methodologies in early project stages.

summary The inclusion of digital fabrication and prototyping in the school environment contributes significantly to learning, stimulating the cognitive process of students. The objective is to introduce concepts of these technologies to students from municipal public schools, relating to the built environment. The action research procedure is developed through practical workshops in a university's laboratory. The workshops promoted clarification about digital technologies for children, encouraging them to reflect on elements that promote improvement in the built environment. The approach with technologies since the beginning of citizen education, points to societies aware of the transformations in the environment in which they live.

summary In this paper we present a didactic tool named “STORM”, which simulates a real environment in which students can control and program a robot in a very basic way by simply setting switches to configure an action or an activity to be carried out by the robot. The control interface is totally graphic, so it can be used by students from primary schools to universities. The objective of the simulator is to create learning objects to develop the dynamic and strategic competences of students in addition to concepts such as robot navigation and control, and computer programming.

summary The digital transformation of the construction industry and the lack of integration of digital technologies in design and construction processes are the motivation for this research. BIM solutions enable new levels of design processes and provide platforms for computational design and novel approaches in the AEC industry. In computational design parametric, generative or algorithmic procedures are utilized to support, optimize, or replace manual processes. The combination of BIM and generative, parametric or algorithmic design forms a hybrid that aims to combine the advantages of both concepts and allows for generative design processes with the creation of BIM objects containing metadata. Along with the digital transformation and novel approaches in the AEC industry, modular construction aims to shift from mass production to mass customization and maximize opportunities for cost-effective, economical, and sustainable buildings. This paper addresses the approach of generating building information models using algorithm-aided design combined with BIM at an early design stage for modular multi-story residential buildings that are affordable and sustainable. In this study, we present the framework of an algorithm-aided BIM approach, from the concept of the generative algorithm to the evaluation approach and the proof of concept as the test of the framework

It tries to identify the proposed structure and controls its stability. Upon request of the student, it also processes displacements, internal forces (moments, shear forces, etc.) and reaction forces on supports. The students can then visualise the desired information by interacting directly with the structure or its members of interest. We present different methods with which students can visualise the results of their actions and discuss their implications in the educational context.

summary This paper investigates the relationships between conventional modes of architectural design, those represented through and mediated by Cartesian schema, and the radical organization of spatial experience available through the use of NURBS modelling. This is examined particularly through a study of how game engine software and the appropriate editors are able to accommodate the properties of both. Within this software the first-person view attempts to provide a normalised experience of the VR environment (usually a game), yet there is significant scope for experiencing radically ‘other’ spatial and topological presences. Whilst considerable work has been done in the use of participatory digital spaces, there is the opportunity for examining the manner in which a highly stylised medium such as Unreal Tournament can productively assist the architectural design process.
