summary The Vibrant Fields project endeavors to construct novel representational tectonics of urbanization, aiming to comprehend the materiality of forms and the genesis of multispectral relations within complex information systems governing the interplay of atmospheric and embodied energy cycles in the biosphere. This project asserts that any perceivable condition of nature arises from dynamic processes that transcend human sensory perception. The project observes the simultaneous realities and temporalities of urban field information within its ecological context. It investigates the architecture, technology, flora, and fauna of cities in relation to their geographic, geological, and ecological conditions, analyzing multiple temporal historical and geological scales. Inspired by theoretical biology, the project models the urban environment as a systemic entity characterized by modularity, representing the biosphere's dynamic interplay of chemical and physical elements engaged in information exchange within ecological systems, influenced by technology, geography, and atmospheric conditions. Vibrant Fields utilizes layers of observation systems to translate the complex biosphere into dimensionally reduced data streams. It introduces complementary devices, bridging the gap between global and local data to better understand microclimatic phenomena.

summary NP-hardness of parametric subshape recognition for an arbitrary number of open terms is proven. Guided by this understanding of the complexity of subshape recognition, a framework for computation-friendly parametric shape grammar interpreters is proposed, which is further detailed by a sub-framework over parametric two-dimensional rectangular shapes. As both the proof of NP-hardness and rectangular sub-framework invoke elements in graph theory, the relationship between shape and graph grammars is also explored.

summary This study explores the relationship between density, built form typologies and their respective environmental quality in terms of Sky View Factor (SVF) distribution on both the facade and ground levels by examining representative residential precincts and urban street blocks. The findings demonstrate that the performances in terms of facade and ground level SVF distribution vary across cases under study. The differences in the variations of their SVF performances as a result of the increase of density suggest that alternative urban block typologies can be explored, when targeting at higher density development, that provide different spatial configurations and an equally good or better SVF performance than that of some of the existing urban block and precinct typologies.

summary This paper presents a proposal for digitalizing architectural space. For this aim, the analysis of space properties in terms of an information scale is suggested as a new way of understanding architectural space. Information scale in this paper is a new concept integrating the body scale, behaviour scale and time scale in traditional conceptions of space. Through the process of information transfer, forms, behaviour, history, design, experience, evaluation etc. in architectural space are integrated into a well-arranged and operational approach. BIM plus SIM (Space Information Model) thus constitutes an integral architectural information model.

summary This research presents a novel method of robotic fabrication for customizable fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) tubular formworks, which also function as reinforcements for large-scale structural components. This process is achieved by the spatial weaving of FRP fabric driven by a robotic arm, and calibrated with the fast-cure resin which is applied on the fabric and cures during the weaving process so the fabricated structure is self-supporting and the structure is formed in an additive manner. With this method, structural members with changing sections can be customized and fabricated rapidly with off-the-shelf materials, following a system of structural reinforcement that has been widely adopted in the construction industry and promotes new applications of construction robotics.

The traditional language of space is composed with the constructive language : plans, sections, perspective ,etc. ; but the computer software that is used to design gives the possibility to represent space in several forms : inmersion, dynamic process, parametric deformations. Here appears the question, what is the new language? Which is the way to get to the center of architectural thought, the space. The computer representations and the modification processes of models are new dynamics of design, this has to be considered in the teaching of Architecture.

summary The paper describes a computational method commonly used in interactive computer graphics and games, and demonstrates its application to structural engineering problems, using a prototype program called Arcade. The method enables a new model of interaction in structural analysis, where the simulated structure responds to user input in real time, in the same way that computer games respond. The method shows good engineering accuracy in simple verification problems involving the non-linear phenomena of buckling and beam yielding. The method offers the potential to make non-linear, timehistory analysis a much more common method in engineering practice, and to bring a greater emphasis on non-linear, dynamic structural behaviour in structural education.

summary General outline: Typology has provided architects basic design resources in the past. Repertories have been created by comparing and establishing relations among a multiplicity of examples: these repertories have been used as the basis for new inventions. Research on type establishes the foundations for organized knowledge that can be accumulated, shared, and enriched by successive designs. We are testing our assumption that CAD is a specially adequate tool for the transformation and manipulation of type in the early stages of the design process. Goals: Our Seminar/Studio gives those who take part in it a renewed vision of type as a basic disposition that can be subject to dynamic transformations. The use of CAD will allow the participants to experiment and verify design decisions on the grounds of a systematic use of typological precedents. Methodology: Starting with definite examples of contemporary architecture and the design theory backing the examples selected, the seminar/ studio is developed in eight studio sessions, exploring different dimensions leading to the “parti”. It is meant for experienced designers, both advanced students and graduates. The first experimental seminar of two sessions took place in November 1999. A more developed version is under way in August, 2000.

summary This paper describes an introductory computational design course for graduate students of design in which Islamic star patterns are utilized in teaching computational logic and design rules. Formal descriptions of eight pointed Islamic star pattern that depict a variety of geometrical structures and constraints of the Euclidean shapes are extracted with the shape grammar method. Then star pattern generator that runs on a specific CAD system is developed by encoding these formal descriptions in systems scripting language. The examples of new designs are generated, and then fabricated using various CAM technologies.

summary This article introduces seven principles for the design of mixed reality compositions. Contrasting the novelty of mixed reality technology, we have derived these principles from basic needs served by traditional architecture as well as those that have arisen since the introduction of information technologies. These principles draw also from research in cognitive science, human-computer interface design and the recognition of the multivalent, psychosomatic nature of space.
