summary The state university of Campinas, Unicamp, is a public university in upstate São Paulo, Brazil, ranked the second best in the country. It was founded in 1966, and its main campus started to be built in 1967, in the suburbs of Campinas, nowadays a two-million people city. The area of the campus is almost 3 million square meters (300 hectares), with a total built area of 522.000 m2 and a population of 40 thousand people - 30 thousand students, 2 thousand faculty members and almost 8 thousand staff members. The campus’ gross population density is 133 people per hectare. Less than 6% of the total campus area is presently occupied. The design of Unicamp's campus is based on concepts that were typical of the modern movement, with reminiscences of corbusian urbanism, in which preference is given to cars and buildings are spread apart on the territory, with little concern to the circulation of pedestrians. The standard building type that has been built on campus since the 1970's is based on non-recyclable materials, and has a poor thermal performance. Unicamp is expected to double its number of students by the year 2030. The campus density is thus expected to grow from 600 people per hectare to almost 1,000 people per hectare. The need to construct new buildings is seen as an opportunity to correct certain characteristics of the campus that are now seen as mistakes, according to sustainability principles. This paper describes a set of proposals targeting the increase of the campus' density in a sustainable way. The plan also aims at increasing the quality of life on campus and diminishing its impact on the environment. The main targets are: - Reducing the average temperature by 2oC; - Reducing the average displacement time by 15 minutes; - Increasing the campus' density by 100%; - Reducing the CO2 emissions by 50%. // In order to achieve these goals, the following actions have been proposed: Developing a new standard building for the university, incorporating sustainability issues, such as the use of renewable and/or recyclable materials, the installation of rainwater storage tanks, the use of natural ventilation for cooling, sitting the buildings in such a way to decrease thermal gain, and other issues that are required for sustainable buildings' international certifications. To assess the performance of the new standard building, different simulation software were used, such as CFD for checking ventilation, light simulation software to assess energy consumption, and so on. 1. Filling up under-utilized urban areas in the campus with new buildings, to make better use of unused infrastructure and decrease the distance between buildings. 2. Proposing new bicycle paths in and outside campus, and proposing changes in the existing bicycle path to improve its safety. 3. Developing a landscape design plan that aims at creating shaded pedestrian and bicycle passageways.

summary Designing is a complicated human behaviour and method, and is often treated as a mysterious "black box” operation in human mind. In the early period as for theory-studying of design thinking, the way of thinking that the researchers took were mostly descriptive discussions. Therefore, they lacked direct and empirical evidence although those studies provided significant exploration of design thinking (Wang, 1995). In recent years as for the study of cognitive science, they have tried to make design "glass box”. That is to try to make the thinking processes embedded in designers publicized. That is also to externalize the design procedure which provided the design studies another theoretical basis of more accurate and deeply researched procedure (Jones, 1992). Hence the studying of design thinking has become more important and the method of designing has also progressed a lot. For example, the classification of the nature of design problem such as ill-defined and well-defined (Newell, Shaw, and Simon, 1967), and different theoretical procedure modes for different disciplines, such as viewing architectural models as conjecture-analysis models and viewing engineering models as analysis-synthesis (Cross, 1991).

summary When Benoît Mandelbrot raised the question about the length of Britain’s coastline in 1967, this was a major step towards formulating the theory of fractals, which also led to a new understanding of irregularity in nature. Since then it has become obvious that fractal geometry is more appropriate for describing complex forms than traditional Euclidean geometry (not only with regard to natural systems but also in architecture). This paper provides another view on architectural composition, following the utilization of fractal analysis. The procedure concerning the exploration of a façade design is demonstrated step by step on the Roman temple front of the Pantheon by Appolodorus and its re-interpretation – in the particular case the entrance front of Il Redentore, a Renaissance church by Palladio. Their level of complexity and range of scales that offer coherence are visualized by the specific measurement method of box-counting.

summary Architectural information has been presented in a myriad of ways through various media for the purpose of public education. Rapid technological change tremendously affects the modes and techniques of communication media necessitating a reassessment of these vehicles. This paper suggests that if the medium should continue to be the ‘massage’ (McLuhan, 1967), it is imperative that we should understand the implications our choice and use of various media for communication of specific data, especially in relation to a targeted audience.

The paper presents the results and analyses of an online user survey (please refer to http://cumincad.scix.net/data/works/att/8d88.content.09055.pdf) which considers the use of currently available media, their roles and performance in the delivery of information of architectural works. It proposes suggestions for the manner and reasons these factors fashion users’ preferences. It also highlights several aspects of architectural data (e.g. forms, lighting, materials, etc) as well as those of the respective media used to represent them while indicating how significant end-users perceive these aspects in the process of understanding architecture. The interpretations of the results outlined in this paper may suggest some answers to the questions relating to current media use, but they may also pose more questions about the types of and the manner in which information should be delivered to architecture enthusiasts/readers. This reassessment is intended to help anticipate future directions in the application of these media in presenting architectural information. Special attention is particularly paid to the opportunities afforded by the digital platform.

title Digitally Mediated Design: Using Computer Programming to Develop a Personal Design Process

summary This thesis is based on the proposal that the current system of architectural design education confuses product and process. Students are assessed through, and therefore concentrate on, the former whilst the latter is left in many cases to chance. This thesis describes a new course taught by the author at MIT for the last three years whose aim is to teach the design process away from the complexities inherent in the studio system. This course draws a parallel between the design process and the Constructionist view of learning, and asserts that the design process is a constant learning activity. Therefore, learning about the design process necessarily involves learning the cognitive skills of this theoretical approach to education. These include concrete thinking and the creation of external artifacts to develop of ideas through iterative, experimental, incremental exploration. The course mimics the Constructionist model of using the computer programming environment LOGO to teach mathematics. It uses computer programming in a CAD environment, and specifically the development of a generative system, to teach the design process. The efficacy of such an approach to architectural design education has been studied using methodologies from educational research. The research design used an emergent qualitative model, employing Maykut and Morehouses interpretive descriptive approach (Maykut & Morehouse, 1994) and Glaser and Strausss Constant Comparative Method of data analysis (Glaser & Strauss, 1967). Six students joined the course in the Spring 1999 semester. The experience of these students, what and how they learned, and whether this understanding was transferred to other areas of their educational process, were studied. The findings demonstrated that computer programming in a particular pedagogical framework, can help transform the way in which students understand the process of designing. The following changes were observed in the students during the course of the year: Development of understanding of a personalized design process; move from using computer programming to solve quantifiable problems to using it to support qualitative design decisions; change in understanding of the paradigm for computers in the design process; awareness of the importance of intrapersonal and interpersonal communication skills; change in expectations of, their sense of control over, and appropriation of, the computer in the design process; evidence of transference of cognitive skills; change from a Behaviourist to a Constructionist model of learning Thesis Supervisor: William J. summary The Mesopotamian Marshlands form one of the first landscapes where people started to transform and manipulate the natural environment in order to sustain human habitation. For thousands of years, people have transformed natural ecosystems into agricultural fields, residential clusters and other agglomerated environments to sustain long-term settlement. In this way, the development of human society has been intricately linked to the extraction, processing and consumption of natural resources. The Mesopotamian Marshlands, located in one of the hottest and most arid areas on the planet, formed a unique wetlands ecosystem, which apart from millions of people, sustained a very high number of wildlife and endemic species. Several historical, political, social and climatic changes, which densely occurred during the past century, completely destroyed the unique civilisation of the area, made all the wild flora and fauna disappear and forced hundreds of thousands of people to migrate. During the last decade, many efforts have been made to restore the marshlands. However, these efforts are lacking a comprehensive design strategy, coherent goals and deep understanding of the complex current geopolitical situation, making the restoration process an extremely difficult task. This work aims at providing strategies for recovering the Mesopotamian Marshlands, organising productive functions in order to sustain the local population and design a new inhabitation model, using advanced computational tools while taking into account the extreme climatic conditions and several unique cultural aspects. Part of the aim of this work is to advance the use of computation and explore the opportunities that digital tools afford in helping find solutions to complex design problems where various design variables need to be coordinated to satisfy the design goals. Today, advanced computation enables designers to use population consumption demands, ecological processes and environmental inputs as design parameters to develop more robust and resilient regional planning strategies. This work has the double aim of first, presenting a framework for re-inhabiting the Marshlands of Mesopotamia. Second, the work suggests a design methodology based on computer-aided design for developing and organising productive functions and patterns of human occupation in wetland environments.

summary The OMS estimates that over 7 million people die every year of complications attributed to atmospheric pollution. Air quality has degraded progressively and dramatically in urban environments over the last couple of decades, being a current concern in most metropolitan areas, and the focus of public policy as well as public/private scientific innovation for better diagnostics and better solutions. At SIC we are developing a method for 3D mapping the sources, affected locations, density, motion, translation, and potential composition of polluted air masses in close to real-time. We do this by leveraging a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses urban and architectural simulation with data science and astronomical techniques, producing a data visualization that enables novel research in air quality, urban policy, private investment, sustainability efforts, and smart transportation. Our approach, Sit-C, combines satellite remote sensing of air masses and atmospheric conditions, with data obtained from traffic and urban surveillance cameras deployed throughout the city of Santiago, in Chile. These cameras, oftentimes open to public access, are usually placed linearly along main avenues, or scattered around urban milestones, providing walk-though perspectives and locally situated POVs to observe the city, analog to series of cross-sections through urban areas. Satellite sensing provides a large-scale plan view, allowing for precise location of specific conditions across a region. This collaboration between architects, designers, engineers, and meteorologists, from Chile and Finland, combines digital design, data science, and remote sensing techniques to study air quality. We study suspended particulate matter (SPM) and other molecules, and its spatial behavior over time, through light-occlusion analysis, producing a three-dimensional map of the air over a city.

summary This article talks about the development and presentation of our work of Degree Thesis, framed inside a Degree Theses restructuring process in the School of Architecture, in this case, emphasizing in virtual buildings design. The Virtual Centre of Venezuelan Digital Art project is a research and design project of a type of Arts Centre with cyberspace only presence specialized in the exhibition of Venezuelan digital art. The first part of it needed an information research, studies in the diverse ways in thatcomputers have being used for virtual museums design, the diverse focuses for the creation of this type of museums and the study of a museum model that adapts to the way this project were focused. When completing the theoretical basement, the individual proposals were developed. In general terms, the prospective results were achieved.

summary This article discusses the redefinition of freehand drawing´s function in the design process, through digital media. This paper presents an experience for an interpretative analysis of drawing using tablets, by the students of Architecture and Urbanism of IAU - USP. It is a design exercise, emphasizing the draft phase. This empirical approach intends to be a pilot for the use of tablets in the perception´s process, suitable for architecture students as a reflection on the different cognitive dimensions that constitute the drawing practice and on its reinterpretation to reach new ideas.

summary Due to the progressive growth of data dimensionality, addressing how much data and time is required to train deep learning models has become an important research topic. Thus, in this paper, we present a benchmark for generating floor plans with Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks in which we compare 10 trained models on a dataset of 80.000 samples, the models use different data dimensions and hyper-parameters on the training phase, beyond this objective, we also tested the capability of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to reduce the dataset noise. The models' assessment was made on more than 6 million with the Frétche Inception Distance (FID). The results show that such models can rapidly achieve similar or even better FID results if trained with 800 images of 512x512 pixels, in comparison to high dimensional datasets of 256x256 pixels, however, using CNNs to enhance data consistency reproduced optimal results using around 27.000 images.

summary Artificial Intelligence represents a substantial part of the available tools on architectural design, especially for Space Layout Planning (SLP). At the same time, the challenge of Mass Customization (MC) is to increase the product variety while maintaining a good cost-benefit ratio. Thus, this research aims to identify new, valid, and easily understandable data patterns through human-machine interaction in an attempt to deal with the challenges of MC during the early phases of SLP. The Design Science Research method was adopted to develop a digital artifact based on deep generative models and a reverse image search engine. The results indicate that the artifact can deliver a series of design alternatives and enhance the navigation process in the solution space, besides giving key insights on dataset design for further research.

summary This paper introduces a real-time neighbour scoring system, using data collected from various web-based APIs, to facilitate "15-minute city‚ designs. The system extends on the current state of the art in three ways; first, it incorporates a multi-source urban API, to automate the extraction of location-based information from online sources; second, it provides a quantitative method to calculate and index "15-minute city‚ performance; and third, it provides a web-based application, to allow real-time feedback of neighbourhood design performance complementing the design refinements at a building and tenancy level. In addition to discussing its theoretical basis, and technical implementation, this paper provides a case study to demonstrate how the neighbourhood scoring system is incorporated into the design of a hypothetical mixed-use urban development.

summary "Synthetic Machine Learning‚ offers a revolutionary leap in real-time environmental analysis for conceptual architectural design. By integrating automatic synthetic data generation, artificial neural network (ANN) training and online deployment, Synthetic Machine Learning offers two main advantages over conventional simulation; First, it reduces the analysis time for a reference simulation from minutes to seconds; Second, it is possible to deploy ANN as a web service in an online design environment, which therein increases accessibility, significantly reducing simulation costs and setup time. The application of Synthetic Machine Learning to perform Daylight Autonomy (DA) and Spatial Daylight Autonomy (sDA) studies to maximise building daylighting for a given use, window to wall ratio, and floorplan arrangement is showcased through a preliminary demonstration work. Comparatively the use of algorithmically generated synthetic data versus real-world data is becoming ubiquitous in other disciplines, the advantages of this approach to the building design process are further discussed.

summary In this paper, we introduce Morphosis: A Responsive Membrane, which physically responds to movement, light and sound interacting spatially and temporally with the environment and their inhabitants. The fundamental hypothesis is to create architectural systems as living, evolving materials. The dynamic of the material is produced by dozens of actuators made by Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) and LED’s which react in real time to change the behavior of the membrane. The system is controlled by a genetic algorithm in an attempt to develop a technological approach to performance skins that possess adaptive and evolutionary personality relative to changing phenomena of the environment of buildings.

summary This work first presents the Acaiaca building, recognizing its iconicity in the city of Belo Horizonte, and discussing aspects of patrimonialization. The building has two sculptures of indigenous faces on its facade, which contribute to the symbolic establishment in the city. Taking advantage of this characteristic of this element of cultural heritage, the research explores, from the photogrammetric digitization of the indigenous face, derivations or cultural products such as resources in mixed realities (augmented and virtual), three-dimensional printing and metal casting, graphic productions. The objective is to show ways for the penetration of representations of our culture in the increasingly digital daily life, illuminating processes that strengthens relationships between the physical world and cyberspace. Thus, the object contributes to museum cyberculture by providing resources for the digital musealization of cultural goods.
