summary The research attempts to defi ne and classify the design capabilities of architects into a basic framework. This defi nition will be useful in understanding and determining the types and nature of impact introduced by digital and manual media used during architecturaldesign process. The research consists of three parts. The First part reviews the main stages, tasks and activities of the architectural design process. The second part builds the proposed framework of design capabilities relating them to the specifi c tasks and activities conductedby the architect along the design process. The third part proposes some useful measures as to how to make use of the proposed framework in assessing the impact of media on the design capabilities of architects.

summary Schema definition is a vital component in the computerised A/E/C projects. existing tools to manage this task are limited both in terms of the scope Of problems they can tackle and their integration with each other. This paper describes a global modellling and development environment for large modelling projects. This environment provides a total solution from initial design of schemas to validation, manipulation arid navigation through final models. A major benefit of the described system is the ability to provide multiple views of evolving schemas (or models) in both graphical and textual forms This allows modellers to visualise their schemas and instance models either textually or graphically as desired. The system automatically maintains the Conisistency of the informalion in these views even when modifications are made in other views. Simple and intuitive view navigation methods allow required information to he rapidly accessed. The environment supports strict checking of model instances and schemas in one of the major ISO-standardised modelling languages no used in product data technology. Ill this paper we show how such a modelling environment has been constructed for evaluation in the JOULE founded COMBINE project.

summary The OMS estimates that over 7 million people die every year of complications attributed to atmospheric pollution. Air quality has degraded progressively and dramatically in urban environments over the last couple of decades, being a current concern in most metropolitan areas, and the focus of public policy as well as public/private scientific innovation for better diagnostics and better solutions. At SIC we are developing a method for 3D mapping the sources, affected locations, density, motion, translation, and potential composition of polluted air masses in close to real-time. We do this by leveraging a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses urban and architectural simulation with data science and astronomical techniques, producing a data visualization that enables novel research in air quality, urban policy, private investment, sustainability efforts, and smart transportation. Our approach, Sit-C, combines satellite remote sensing of air masses and atmospheric conditions, with data obtained from traffic and urban surveillance cameras deployed throughout the city of Santiago, in Chile. These cameras, oftentimes open to public access, are usually placed linearly along main avenues, or scattered around urban milestones, providing walk-though perspectives and locally situated POVs to observe the city, analog to series of cross-sections through urban areas. Satellite sensing provides a large-scale plan view, allowing for precise location of specific conditions across a region. This collaboration between architects, designers, engineers, and meteorologists, from Chile and Finland, combines digital design, data science, and remote sensing techniques to study air quality. We study suspended particulate matter (SPM) and other molecules, and its spatial behavior over time, through light-occlusion analysis, producing a three-dimensional map of the air over a city.

summary We describe the need for a joint effort between design researchers and simulation tool developers in formulating procedures and standards for integrating simulation into the building design process. We review and discuss current efforts in the US and Europe in the development of next-generation simulation tools and design integration techniques. In particular, we describe initiatives in object-oriented simulation environments (including the US Energy 'Kernel System, the Swedish Ida system, the UK Energy Kernel System, and the French ZOOM program.) and consider the relationship of these environments to recent R&D initiatives in design integration (the COMBINE project in Europe and the AEDOT project in the US).

title Natural Language with Discrete Speech as a Mode for Human- to-Machine Communication

summary A voice interactive natural language system, which allows users to solve problems with spoken English commands, has been constructed. The system utilizes a commercially available discrete speech recognizer which requires that each word be followed by approximately a 300 millisecond pause. In a test of the system, subjects were able to learn its use after about two hours of training. The system correctly processed about 77 percent of the over 6000 input sentences spoken in problem-solving sessions. Subjects spoke at the rate of about three sentences per minute and were able to effectively use the system to complete the given tasks. Subjects found the system relatively easy to learn and use, and gave a generally positive report of their experience

title Building product information search by images

summary Building product information is required during the architectural design and technical design. The common access to the technical information system is the multi-criteria search mode. This search mode is adapted to the situation where an architect has a precise demand of information. But most of the time, the architect looks for ideas and wants to obtain many illustrations of product uses. Therefore, the system has to propose another search mode adapted to the situation where the demand is still fuzzy. Considering that the architect has the capacity to think with image and that an image can generate easily ideas, then a search by images seems to be suitable to the situation where an architect looks for ideas. The web is an inexhaustible resource of images we can exploit to provision an image database on a specific area. The system we propose allows making building product information search with images extracted from the web. This article presents the method used to extract images from web sites of French building product companies and how these images are used in an interactive and progressive image retrieval process.

summary This paper presents an ethnographic pilot study into the design and application of digital design tools in a leading Shanghai-based architecture and engineering firm. From a participant observer's point of view, we employ qualitative research methods to enquire the conditions and experiences entailed in day-to-day collaborative activities in conjunction with the custom-development of digital design tools in advanced practice. The described initial ethnographic enquiry lasted for six weeks. While previous studies tended to favour post-rationalised and outcome-focused reports into toolmaking for design, we observe through participant observation that daily collaboration in practice is multi-faceted and overwhelmingly more complex. This paper further portrays and reflects on the concomitant opportunities and challenges of participant observation as a research method that can bridge academia and practice. We argue that, in order to appreciate and to inform digital design toolmaking practices, it is essential to recognise the richness of practice, in and of itself.

summary Compactness of a district or zone is determined by considering its appearance and the area of dispersal of the district (Altman, 1998) and it is used as a characteristic to describe shape (Shiode, 1998; Knight, 1997). However, existing compactness measurement used to assess district plans in redistricting applications are vague and imprecision although there are more than thirty over Euclidean or non-Euclidean measurement methods. Therefore, this paper presents an integrated shape compactness measurement indexing with a fuzzy multicriteria decision making approach (FMCDM) to enhance the measurement of shape compactness. An experiment is conducted in order to verify the practically of the proposed model to improve existing compactness measurement method.

summary The paper presents a design support system for collaborative work based upon the composite knowledge representation. It addresses the main challenges of distributed environment: ensuring a convenient access to the common data by multiple users and maintaining consistency of such data. The main idea is to couple the design support system implemented in C/C++ with the knowledge database using the ODBC library developed by the Microsoft. The ability of the proposed system is demonstrated on several examples.

This paper presents a virtual reality interface tool which allows a user to assemble an architecture structure from a library of pre-built blocks. The library is a distributed client-server database.

summary The first few years of the 21st century have seen a revolution in the ways that we think about designing and making buildings. In no other area is this more apparent than in the interface of computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacture (CAM). The potential blurring or assimilation of these two systems holds the still elusive but golden promise of a direct, smooth transference of design data into large-scale production facilities in which components are directly cut, modelled and moulded. How far off are we from seeing the widespread adoption of this technology? What is the potential for CAD/CAM beyond tailor-made forms? In the future, what is the possibility of complex, large-scale forms being run out in mass-customised buildings?

summary Work at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) on laser radar imaging of a construction site is described. The objective of the NIST research is to make measurements required in a construction project quicker and cheaper than current practice and to do so without impacting existing operations. This can be done by developing techniques for real-time assessment and documentation in terms of 3-D as-built models of the construction process. Once developed, this technology may be used for other applications such as condition assessment of a hazardous environment where human intervention would be impossible.

summary A virtual environment (VE) has been designed for functioning as a three-dimensional interface to a repository of images and sounds. This paper attempts to study design interface in VEs. This study first examines the characteristics of VEs. The difference between physical and virtual environments is also studied. The relationship between both is classified as three types, i.e. complement, replacement, or independence. Then it establishes the design interface in VEs, and presents an experimental project, the virtual architecture museum (VAM). Four elements of VEs are highlighted, i.e. wayfinding, linkage, context, and atmosphere. In VAM, the interface is implemented on the web and is integrated with an architectural database. It is found that the appropriateness of design interface can enhance the users' spatial awareness, and consequently facilitate the task of navigation and wayfinding within VEs. The context and atmosphere of VEs can be defined by means of simile or metaphor through the visual or acoustic experience for gaining senses of a place.

summary The article presents a methodology for the assessment of the impact of new buildings on the cultural landscape, in particular the exposure of historical landmarks. While using digital analysis and a 3D city model, the methodology examines reciprocal visual relations between historical and planned buildings. The following methods have been used: a) Visual Impact Size (VIS) which enables to determine a visual impact area and the degree of architectural facility domination in space; b) comparative analysis (cumulative viewshed) which enables to determine areas where viewsheds of new investment and historical buildings overlap; c) simulation of selected views from the level of human eyesight. The proposed landscape examination methodology has been presented using the case study of Katowice, Poland. The goal was to determine reciprocal relations between historical landmarks of the Silesia Museum and tall buildings planned in the vicinity. The study used a Digital Surface Model (DSM), a 3D city model. All simulations have been performed using software developed by the author (C++).

summary In Britain, health and leisure tourism seems primarily to mean leisure with health being normally merely a secondary consideration ranging from fresh air to diet. In central Europe Spas still draw tourists and patients for leisure and for treatments from their own as well as neighbouring countries. Indeed, whilst Buxton, Bath, Harrogate and Leamington draw day trippers to see their historic buildings, Carlsbad, Budapest, Piestany and many of the other grand old Spas of central Europe are filled with longer-term guests seeking an improvement to their own chronic ailments. The reasons for this decline in British Spas and the continuing relative good health of Spas in central Europe are a complex mix that includes national characteristic, financial constraints and a disbelief by the British medical establishment in the efficacy of the water cure and related Spa treatments. This reluctance to acknowledge complementary health care is certainly not the case in Germany and the old Austro-Hungarian lands and Spa tourism presents a challenge as well as a promise of lucrative international tourism to the emerging "new" states of pre-communist Europe.

summary In this paper we report on recent developments in ARTHUR: an approach to support complex design and planning decisions for architects together with the simulation of pedestrian movement and the integration of existing CAD tools on the design table. Following a brief introduction, past and current work that has taken a similar approach will be reviewed. Next we describe a scenario that integrates agent-based simulations of pedestrian movement with space creation, and then give an overview of the system before finally discussing findings related to recent user evaluation studies of the system. This paper suggests that the integration of simulated pedestrian movement on the design table, while going through a cycle of reflection-in-action, plays a vital role in exploring possible design solutions and encourages new and different ways of thinking about design problems.
