title Unicamp 2030: A plan for increasing a university campus in a sustainable way and an example of integrated use of CAAD simulation and computational design strategies

summary The state university of Campinas, Unicamp, is a public university in upstate São Paulo, Brazil, ranked the second best in the country. It was founded in 1966, and its main campus started to be built in 1967, in the suburbs of Campinas, nowadays a two-million people city. The area of the campus is almost 3 million square meters (300 hectares), with a total built area of 522.000 m2 and a population of 40 thousand people - 30 thousand students, 2 thousand faculty members and almost 8 thousand staff members. The campus’ gross population density is 133 people per hectare. Less than 6% of the total campus area is presently occupied. The design of Unicamp's campus is based on concepts that were typical of the modern movement, with reminiscences of corbusian urbanism, in which preference is given to cars and buildings are spread apart on the territory, with little concern to the circulation of pedestrians. The standard building type that has been built on campus since the 1970's is based on non-recyclable materials, and has a poor thermal performance. Unicamp is expected to double its number of students by the year 2030. The campus density is thus expected to grow from 600 people per hectare to almost 1,000 people per hectare. The need to construct new buildings is seen as an opportunity to correct certain characteristics of the campus that are now seen as mistakes, according to sustainability principles. This paper describes a set of proposals targeting the increase of the campus' density in a sustainable way. The plan also aims at increasing the quality of life on campus and diminishing its impact on the environment. The main targets are: - Reducing the average temperature by 2oC; - Reducing the average displacement time by 15 minutes; - Increasing the campus' density by 100%; - Reducing the CO2 emissions by 50%. // In order to achieve these goals, the following actions have been proposed: Developing a new standard building for the university, incorporating sustainability issues, such as the use of renewable and/or recyclable materials, the installation of rainwater storage tanks, the use of natural ventilation for cooling, sitting the buildings in such a way to decrease thermal gain, and other issues that are required for sustainable buildings' international certifications. To assess the performance of the new standard building, different simulation software were used, such as CFD for checking ventilation, light simulation software to assess energy consumption, and so on. 1. Filling up under-utilized urban areas in the campus with new buildings, to make better use of unused infrastructure and decrease the distance between buildings. 2. Proposing new bicycle paths in and outside campus, and proposing changes in the existing bicycle path to improve its safety. 3. Developing a landscape design plan that aims at creating shaded pedestrian and bicycle passageways.

summary The idea of an emergent or generative form based on repeating rules of development borrowed from the field of developmental biology has provided fertile ground for inspiration for architectural theory and computational design. With simple constraints developed iteratively, complex geometry and form generation can be distilled down to a list of developmental rules or functions in order to deterministically generate form. The ideas and illustrations of naturalists on organic form and developmental biology leading back to the turn of the 20th c., such as the work of D'arcy Wentworth Thompson and Ernst Haeckel, have inspired architects from Louis Sullivan all the way to contemporary generative design. This study revisits this design tradition of biomimetic geometries based on deterministic rules for the iterative development of forms based on biological analogs and models for growth. A series of semi-regular compound patterns were developed using parametric modeling and iterative rules. These geometries were then applied to surface topologies as a decorative tactile embellishment resulting in complex thermodynamic conditions. A series of physical prototypes where then developed with different high-relief patterns and pattern densities. Positive prototype geometries were then produced using stereolithography for casting plaster molds for the production molding of finished ceramic pieces for thermal analysis using digital thermography. By studying the performance of these complex geometries as physical prototypes under controlled experimentation, high-relief surfaces and the resulting thermodynamic conditions can be understood not just qualitative experience, but also quantitatively through measured performance metrics and innovative tools for analytical analysis.

summary Based on a comparison between the perception of digital and real construction, the development of virtual systems and the review of additional sources, this paper states some differences between the design of virtual environments and architectural spaces. Virtual-reality technologies provide advanced capabilities to simulate real situations, and also to create digital worlds not referred to physical places, such as imaginary landscapes or environments devoted to electronic activities, like entertainment, learning or commerce. Some on-line services already use 3D-stages, resembling building halls and domestic objects, and several authors have mentioned virtual modeling as a job opportunity to architects. But it will argue in this paper that the design of those environments should consider their own digital characteristics. Besides, the use of virtual installations on networks impells a convergence with global media, like Internet or TV. Virtual environments can be a 3Devolution of communicational technologies, which have an increasing participation in culture, reaching a closer relationship to contemporary architecture.

Projected on the lateral wall, the cadence of the vertical and horizontal elements becomes a temporal diagram of the design process.movement time takes part into the process through two kinds of movement: the first one, freezed when reaches the best results, in terms of complexity, is given by the surface intersecting the tubular paths; the second one is represented by multiple routes walking on which the project can be experienced (in absence of any objective, fixed, point of view, movement becomes the only way to understand relations). Thresholds between typical architectural categories (such as inside-outside, object-landscape etc.) are blurred in favour of a more supple condition, another kind of continuity (re)appears, as a new media, between the different historical layers of the city.

summary Reticular systems are in many aspects a distinct taxonomy of volumetric geometries. In comparison with the conventional embodiment of a ‘volume’ that encapsulates a certain quantity of space with a shell reticular geometries emerge from the accumulation of micro elements to define a gradient of space. Observed in biological systems, such structures result from their material properties and formation processes as well as often ‘simple’ axioms that produce complex results. In micro or macro levels, from forest tree canopies to plant cell walls these porous volumes are not shaped to have a singular ‘solution’ for a purpose; they provide the fundamental geometric characteristics of a ‘line cloud’ that is simultaneously flexible in response to its environment, porous to other systems (light, air, liquids) and less susceptible to critical damage. The porosity of such systems and their volumetric depth also result in kinetic spatial qualities in a 4D architectural space. Built upon a ‘weaving’ organization and the high performance material properties of carbon fiber composite, this research focuses on a formal grammar that initiates the complex system of a reticular volume. A finite ‘lexical’ axiom is consisted of the basic characters of H, M and L responding to the anchor points on the highest, medium and lower levels of the extruding loom. The genome thus produces a string of data that in the second phase of programming are assigned to 624 points on the loom. The code aims to distribute the nodes across the flat line cloud and organize the sequence for the purpose of overlapping the tensioned strings. The virtually infinite results are then assessed through an evolutionary solver for confining an array of favorable results that can be then selected from by the designer. This research focuses on an approximate control over the fundamental geometric characteristics of a reticular system such as node density and directionality. The proposal frames the favorable result of the weave to be three-dimensional and volumetric – avoiding distinctly linear or surface formations.

The ACTS 1 project MObile Media and ENTertainment Services (MOMENTS) is leveraging the usage of state-of-the-art technique for the handling of vector graphics and animation contents, obtained through very low data transmission channels, in order to provide veru attractive multimedia services in that environment. This paper focuses on the achievements obtained within MOMENTS in regard to the handling of dynamic 2D/3D graphics for the projected wireless multimedia services.

summary Architects have often employed nature as a tool for design. However, it is not until recently nature has been examined as a system of complex mechanisms. This area of study is known as Biomimetics. This research situates itself within this field by deeply investigating one such biological system, the bi-layer bending mechanism in coiling tendrils, and exploring its relevance in architectural design. This mechanism uniquely integrates the flexibility of pliable materials with the strength of rigid materials to create rapid curling responses when stimulated. When this mechanism is translated into an architectural system, it provides the opportunity to leverage two opposing materials to create self-bending structures. Particularly, the authors found a great advantage in utilizing this system for rapidly deployable shell structures. The inventive use of this bending mechanism creates bespoke morphologies with a few simple elements, creating versatile solutions which can adapt to various conditions. Through this research, the authors investigate this mechanism in a design setting and explore its potential applications at an architectural scale. This work highlights the significance of the application of biological principles in the architecture and design discipline.

Can Endoscopic methods be used effectively as a creative environment for design decision-making and teamwork and even to stimulate the generation of new design ideas? How should modelmaking be considered if it is to be of use in an ‘impatient’ design process, and how can students be made aware of the opportunities of both direct eye level observations from design models and of the more sophisticated endoscopic imaging techniques? This paper explores the theme of eye level modelling by focusing on a number of formal exercises and educational experiments carried out by the Delft Media group in recent years. summary Designing - giving form to new objects or environments - is largely a question of anticipating the workings of spatial and material environments, which can become ‘reality’ only by being built. Until ‘realized’ a design is essentially a figment of the designer’s imagination, although his or her ideas may be laid down and conveyed to others via specialized design media. In this way impressions of the design may be shared with clients, colleagues or other ‘actors’ in the design process. Such products of the designer’s imaging process can be relatively abstract or begin to approach - future - reality. Form & Media research can be ‘revealing’, stimulating insights concerning preferences, working processes and the effects of products of the designer’s imagination. In the past ten years we have gained considerable practical experience with both virtual and tangible (scale) models. We have compared different techniques in conference workshops, within educational settings and in our Form & Media research laboratory. The research projects ranged from the development of practical techniques and working methods to protocol analyses of designing architects. This contribution draws comparisons between different computer aided modelling techniques, with an indication of their perspectives, making use of the experience gained from various experiments in an educational context, and will highlight the potentials for different combinations of digital and physical modelling techniques.

title A Room with a Different View

summary This contribution documents the developments, results and findings of an experimental design visualisation and presentation exercise entitled ‘A Different View of Delft’. The primary aim of this project was to make students aware of the potentials of the active utilisation of physical models for the sake of designerly enquiry. Furthermore the ambition was to explore new ways of using such model ‘environments’ for the benefit of design communication and presentation. For this exercise a ‘game’ situation with clear constraints and rules was developed beforehand. The students were to work out a proposal for a new exhibition space, as an annex to a – hypothetical – existing museum. The new space was to create a fitting ‘setting’ for a single work of art: Johannes Vermeer’s famous View of Delft. The maximum contours of the new exhibition space were given, along with clear guidelines concerning which walls and roof segments might be (partly) opened. The emphasis lay on the viewer’s ‘approach’ to the painting, its positioning and ‘framing’ in an architectural context. A designerly search involving form and space, the choice of colours and materials and particularly the strategic use of (natural) lighting.

summary This paper documents an initiative taking the form of a "dialogue". The format which has been developed is somewhat similar to that of the "conversation" which Mondrian conceived in 1919, taking place between two fictitious characters - A and B - discussing the new direction in art, which he called "Nieuwe Beelding" and which contributed to the "De Stijl" movement (the dialogue was followed later that year by a "trialogue" between X, Y and Z on a virtual walk taking them from the countryside to the city) 1 . This time the issue is not so much the evolvement of a new artistic or architectural style, but the role of "new media" in architecture... The present dialogue takes place between two fictitious media proponents ("Alpha" and "Omega"). They take turns questioning several issues and exchanging proposals... What are the values - and the promises - of computer supported instruments in creative design and research - concerning the art and science shaping the built environment? How do the present applications measure up, how do they compare to the expectations and ambitions expressed a number of years ago? The form of a dialogue means that issues and ideas, which are not often aired within the confines of academic discourse, can be played back and forth and a measure of exaggeration was intended from the beginning... This contribution does not in any way pretend to be all-inclusive. Rather, the paper is meant to put forward ideas and experiences - from the perspective of the Delft Media group, in practice, in teaching and in research - which may stimulate (or even irritate?) but will hopefully activate. The aim is to open up discussions, to allow other (hidden) agendas for the future to become more visible and to look for platforms for sharing concepts and fascinations, however improbable they might be...

summary This paper focuses on the Research Programme of the Media Sector at the Faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology. The media research objectives for the coming years have been brought together with an overall project: “Dynamic Perspective”. The “dynamic” quality may be interpreted both as movement (visual displacement and registration) and as change (the effects of different options).

The four projects which together make up this research programme deal with perception (understanding) and conception (designing and imaging) of urban space: “the architecture of the city”. Specific aspects are the effects of primary and secondary spatial boundaries and the systematic structuring of simulation of visual information. The programme will further concentrate on the development and implementation of relevant techniques (besides “traditional” ones such as the drawing and the architectural model, on multimedia techniques such as endoscopy, computer visualization and development of virtual reality systems), both in education and in design practice.

By means of analysis, the creation of visual models of choice and the setting up of experiments, the programme aims at the furthering of theoretical knowledge and at acquiring better insights into the effects of design decisions at an urban level, both for designers and for other participants in the design process. Further development of existing laboratory facilities towards a comprehensive Design Simulation Laboratory is an important aspect of the programme.

Within the media research process the Aspern location master plan has been considered as a case study, the findings of which will be presented separately in the workshop sessions.

summary This paper focuses on results and findings of an educational project, in which the participating students had to develop a design strategy for an urban plan by using and combining endoscopic and computational design visualisation techniques. This educational experiment attempted to create a link between the Media research programme titled 'Dynamic Perspective' and an educational exercise in design composition. It was conceived as a pilot study, aimed at the investigation of emerging applications and possible combinations of different imaging techniques which might be of benefit in architectural and urban design education and potentially for the (future) design practice. The aim of this study was also to explore the relationship between spatial perception and design simulation. The point of departure for the student exercise was an urban masterplan which the Dynamic Perspective research team prepared for the workshop 'the (in)visible city' as part of the 1995 European Architectural Endoscopy Association Conference in Vienna, Austria. The students taking part in the exercise were asked to develop, discuss and evaluate proposals for a given part of this masterplan by creating images through different model configurations using optical and computer aided visualisation techniques besides more traditional design media.The results of this project indicate that an active and combined use of visualisation media at a design level, may facilitate communication and lead to a greater understanding of design choices, thus creating insights and contributing to design decision-making both for the designers and for the other participants in the design process.

summary This contribution explores the continued evolvement of the instruments of design in relation to practice and education (and potentially: research) and attempts to characterize the effects brought about by recent media ‘shifts’. For this purpose a framework has been established to identify and ‘map’ relevant design media. The relationships between various ‘traditional’ media and computer based applications are scrutinized and characterized and the opportunities which they offer are compared. The underlying conceptual framework was recently put before a group of professionals in the in the course of an experimental workshop concerning the potentials of a virtual design media ‘museum’. In the following step an attempt is made to identify changing media roles, whereby the opportunities of the educational environment – as a ‘laboratory’ for emerging developments – is stressed. Some specific tendencies are identified, notably: the combined application of different sorts of design media; the surfacing of imaginative new working methods inspired by ‘classic’ media techniques and various new ways of escaping the serious limitations of traditional computer interfaces. These developments, making use of various types of computer platforms, may be expected to contribute to more structured – and imaginative – approaches to professional design as well as to architectural education and research.

summary Designing is a specialized, unpredictable development process which is to a large extent visually generative and reflective – and, as such, predominantly pre-linguistic. Architectural designers make creative use of various imaging techniques, in order to elucidate design concepts that would otherwise remain ‘figments of the imagination’. By projecting their ideas, into readable information, these may be shared, communicated, evaluated and developed further. In this context, various types of models play an important role on different levels of design driven enquiry and representation. This contribution explores the dynamic conditions and potentials of models in architecture, in particular as a prerequisite for visual exploration and communication.

summary If we wish to understand the workings of design interventions, it may be opportune to simulate their effects using specialised techniques, such as Endoscopy or Computer Aided Modes of representation. In such undertakings, the method of study will generally involve the active use of some sort of a model. Models of all sorts are used extensively throughout architectural design, research and education. How such a model is conceived and executed is closely linked to the function it is to serve. This may concern design driven exploration, testing or communication, to name but a few of the options.

summary The underlying thesis of the research described in this paper is that imaginative, model-based explorations may help us better understand iconic architectural artefacts, such as cultural heritage projects. In order to systematically consider and study architectural artefacts, it is essential for academics to reach a level of clarity – and potentially even consensus – concerning the domains of architectural design that may be considered relevant and to question - often implicitly – shared conceptions. This paper intends to communicate the results and findings of an in-depth case-based exploration on the basis of ten design artefacts, using a specially developed conceptual framework. Furthermore, the aim was to draw conclusions concerning the benefits and potentials of this approach in the context of heritage-based architectural research in an academic environment.
