summary Context awareness is important for human senses of places as well as human computer interaction. The aim of this research paper is focusing on controlling the user's privacy in a smart space which is adaptive to different users for enhancing the user's awareness in his diary life. In Environmental Psychology, the definition of privacy is that an individual has the control of deciding what information of himself is released to others, and under how he interact with others. (Westin 1970) And privacy is categorized as the linguistic privacy and visual privacy. (Sundstorm 1986). Solutions for privacy control: Plan Layout, Vision Boundary, Access Control and Architecture Metaphor - the transmission of information is not ascertainable for every single user. Although information are shown in public, but information is implied by cues and symbols. Only a certain user or a group of users have access to the full context of information. The methodology is to form an analytic framework to study the relationship between information, user and activities by using the computational supports derived from KitchenSense, ConceptNet, Python, 3d Studio Max and Flash; and to record patterns built up by users' behaviour and actions. Furthermore, the scenario-based simulation can envision the real world conditions by adding interfaces for enhancing user awareness.

summary The paper which is proposed here will introduce an ongoing research project aiming to research data mining as a methodology of knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis. To address the increasing multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires a multidisciplinary approach to urban analysis. This research is an attempt to establish a link between knowledge discovery methodologies and automated urban feature analysis. Therefore, in the scope of this research we apply data mining methodologies for urban analysis. Data mining is defined as to extract important patterns and trends from raw data (Witten and Frank, 2005). When applied to discover relationships between urban attributes, data mining can constitute a methodology for the analysis of multi-dimensional relational complexity of urban environments (Gil, Montenegro, Beirao and Duarte, 2009) The theoretical motivation of the research is derived by the lack of explanatory urban knowledge which is an issue since 1970’s in the area of urban research. This situation is mostly associated with deductive methods of analysis. The analysis of urban system from the perspective of few interrelated factors, without considering the multi-dimensionality of the system in a deductive fashion was not been explanatory enough. (Jacobs, 1961, Lefebvre, 1970 Harvey, 1973) To address the multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires the consideration of diverse spatial, social, economic, cultural, morphological, environmental, political etc. features of urban entities. The main claim is that, in urban analysis, there is a need to advance from traditional one dimensional (Marshall, 2004) description and classification of urban forms (e.g. Land-use maps, Density maps) to the consideration of the simultaneous multi-dimensionality of urban systems. For this purpose, this research proposes a methodology consisting of the application of data mining as a knowledge discovery method into a GIS based conceptual urban database built out of official real data of Beyoglu. Generally, the proposed methodology is a framework for representing and analyzing urban entities represented as objects with properties (attributes). It concerns the formulation of an urban entity’s database based on both available and non-available (constructed from available data) data, and then data mining of spatial and non-spatial attributes of the urban entities. Location or position is the primary reference basis for the data that is describing urban entities. Urban entities are; building floors, buildings, building blocks, streets, geographically defined districts and neighborhoods etc. Urban attributes are district properties of locations (such as land-use, land value, slope, view and so forth) that change from one location to another. Every basic urban entity is unique in terms of its attributes. All the available qualitative and quantitative attributes that is relavant (in the mind of the analyst) and appropriate for encoding, can be coded inside the computer representation of the basic urban entity. Our methodology is applied by using the real and official, the most complex, complete and up-to-dataset of Beyoglu (a historical neighborhood of Istanbul) that is provided by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB). Basically, in our research, data mining in the context of urban data is introduced as a computer based, data-driven, context-specific approach for supporting analysis of urban systems without relying on any existing theories. Data mining in the context of urban data; • Can help in the design process by providing site-specific insight through deeper understanding of urban data. • Can produce results that can assist architects and urban planners at design, policy and strategy levels. • Can constitute a robust scientific base for rule definition in urban simulation applications such as urban growth prediction systems, land-use simulation models etc. In the paper, firstly we will present the framework of our research with an emphasis on its theoretical background. Afterwards we will introduce our methodology in detail and finally we will present some of important results of data mining analysis processed in Rapid Miner open-source software. Specifically, our research define a general framework for knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis and enable the usage of GIS and data mining as complementary applications in urban feature analysis. summary This paper studies houses built between 1930 and 1970 in southern Brazil. It is a large collection of projects, which has been systematized for publishing on a website and in digital media. The aim is to discuss the form of organization and systematization of this collection, which involved the construction of conceptual digital graphics. It emphasized the adoption of the concepts of type and model in the organization of the collection, which required a formal abstraction of the objects. The construction of conceptual graphics proved to be an effective tool in the process of abstraction. Moreover, such graphics have become more didactic material, enabling a better understanding of the universe studied.

summary Architecture has for too long focused on the presentation of pristine objects and the presentation in drawing form. A critical understanding of the field, however, necessitates a reevaluation of the roles of the process involved in the production of building. Rather than emphasizing surface appearances, an architecture rooted in process aims ultimately at revealing the fundamental and deep structures inherent within the making of architecture. One of the primary tasks of the process is to provoke intuition and ingenuity - and the awareness that both are founded on knowledge - and that knowledge must be applied with imagination. The experiment presented here developed sequentially with a defined structure to the process of design, moving gradually from the abstract into the concrete, thereby attempting and understanding of what Roland Barthes identified as 'concrete abstraction.'

summary Paradoxically, one of the most difficult but enjoyable things we do is to imagine. To open the eyes of our mind and see what no one else can see. We see images of things that are yet to be and through the same skill we devise ways in which to make them happen. We design the future in the form of environments, graphics, products, films, and a growing range of new media. Our ability to develop a vision and to visualize it is a gift that we are called to cultivate and put to good use. We have been privileged with a great responsibility. In the process of developing a vision and communicating that vision to others, we “visualize”. Visualization can be a very private experience in which we are alone with mental images that help us shape our vision. In other instances visualization can be a component of mass communication. Visualization can be a means or can be an end. It can be a small architectural sketch on a paper napkin or a mega-graphic covering a high-rise building, an airplane or a ship. In every case, the relationship between vision and visualization is a mutually supportive articulation of what our eyes and our minds can see. Our vision of the role of computers in the art and science of visualization is in constant development. Computer visualization can support an intimate dialog between a designer and his/her vision. It can translate and communicate that vision to a larger audience and in the hands of a new-media artist it can actually constitute his/her vision. The 9th Annual Conference of SIGraDI (Ibero American Society for Computer Graphics) will explore our collective vision on the future of digital visualization and digital media in Environmental Design, Product Design, Graphic Design, Cinematography, New Media, and Art. Authors are invited to share their research work with a focus on how it contributes to shape a collective understanding of the past, awareness of the present, and vision of the future in our multiple disciplines.

summary This paper has argued that interdisciplinary approach is necessary to get better understanding of the problem within a built heritage area. It is found that inhabitants perceived the mixed heritage architecture as their own, an appreciation also expressed toward perception values of building: uniqueness, aesthetic and age. The research has also shown that inhabitants in the Darmo residential area - Surabaya, Indonesia perceived that their area are worth to be conserve due to the function such as the city amenities and attribute of the shady environment. Taken together, these results suggest that a better understanding of inhabitant’s awareness will contribute to the successful conservation program.

summary The protection and preservation of historical heritage are important tasks for all walks of life because rebuilding the exclusionary social memory, symbolically representing the nation’s identity. From this reflection, the problem arises of how to make the people appreciate the historic buildings. The Region of Medium High Uruguay, will serve as pilot study on a method of applying to the enhancement of national heritage by the population that is through the materialization of form. It is with the help of computer modeling combined with digital prototyping that seeks to find effective alternatives that use new technologies in the upgrading of historic buildings, a form of knowledge, integration and collaboration. In many areas of knowledge, consciousness makes the human being is connected to the world through all the senses. And touch, as experimentation and understanding of space it inhabits, may be the most overlooked sense in recent informatization times. In this research, the new realization techniques used to attempt to leverage awareness and understanding of a heritage, for a population hitherto alien to the cultural and historical values of a local architecture.

summary In this paper, we explore the systems for engaging the public in evaluating the design proposals by questioning means to improve the democratisation of designing built environments. We argue that a democratic and participatory design can be achieved when community members are motivated to contribute actively to the design process of shaping their environment. Our goal is to provide a critical understanding of how existing tools have integrated or failed to motivate the public to be part of design decision-making and collect feedback effectively. Grounded in our literature review, we propose a location-based mobile-AR prototype to create an inclusive, data-informed design process. The mobile platforms are suitable for an AR application because of their accessibility, familiarity, and ability to support in-situ awareness notices. The tool features include interactive and in-situ form views in AR, performance data views, and interfaces for sharing insights through discussion threads. A challenge for such solutions is transforming complex design data for different non-specialist users through an interactive AR experience. The proposed AR interface is a step towards bridging the gap between designers and community members, ensuring that built environments are created with the perspectives of those for whom they serve.

summary The continual emergence of new informational and technological systems has impacted our cultural landscape. As society continues to evolve, we are becoming more connected to virtual systems that impact our spatial environment. The awareness and understanding of these invisible forces requires new curricular pedagogies in architectural education. This paper will document an ongoing course that was developed to research new methodologies for working with haptic environments and informational systems. Utilizing a high performance-computing center, students in the class are developing new adaptive intelligent spatial systems that engage a multiplicity of scales. They researched environments for PDA’s (Personal Data Assistance), I-Pods, cellular phones, GPS (Guidance Positioning Systems) and a new immersive virtual dome environment. The goal of the class was to reevaluate how architectural practice in the future will encompass a more holistic approach to both physical and virtual spatial development.

summary In recent years, office environments adopt ubiquitous computing with a focus on collaboration and mobile communication to promote real-time enterprises. Within this context, this study deals with a significant issue on the ubiquitous office environments by understanding human behaviors and works. We propose a ubiquitous office model considering the correlation between ubiquitous computing technologies and work services in the office. Two attributes are focused, collaboration and mobility, as identifier for categorizing the work types. The classic types of work services have variations in the amount of communication and the proportion of working outside of the office. The proposed work service model includes territorial and non-territorial services for the ubiquitous office to enable workers in and out of the office to interact with each other. The findings in this paper would be a theoretical basis for embodying the intelligent office which supports office works efficiently and effectively.

Advantages such as synergistic communication, clarification of common concepts and awareness of media characteristics are illuminated through digital and traditional projects. Language teaching shows how to use these exercises to encourage critical thinking in a CAD curriculum.

These include: Virtual design–build projects in which students construct 3D CAD models that include all elements that are used in construction. Virtual office in which several students must collaborate under the supervision of a student acting as project architect to create a 3D CAD model and design development documents. Virtual sub-contracting in which each student builds a trade specific 3D CAD model of a building and all of the trade specific models must be combined into a single model. Construction simulations (4D CAD) in which students build 3D CAD models showing all components and then animate them to illustrate the assembly process. Cost estimating using spreadsheets. These techniques are applied and reapplied at several points in the curriculum in both technical laboratory courses and design studios. This paper compares virtual construction methods to physical design–build projects and provides our pedagogical arguments for the use of digital media for understanding construction.

summary Along with the regeneration of complex cultural sites, a growing awareness regarding the essential role of ICT tools and technologies has emerged from past knowledge, research and intervention for future valorisation actions. However, within these processes, the artefact regeneration phase struggles to consider some peculiar aspects related to the material and immaterial evidence and uncertainties. Such a unique field can be supported by standard ontology conceptual formalism. Nevertheless, as it frequently occurs, it may not be enough to handle uncertain information, requiring the introduction of advanced tools for a deeper understanding and a better structure definition to manage those large sets of heterogeneous knowledge. A promising approach to handle uncertainty and to address this issue is the integration of fuzzy logic with usual technologies and semantic tools. In fact, the fuzzy set theory aims to describe indefinite concepts through a generalised notion of set. This paper aims to explore the possibility of a system based on fuzzy ontologies to manage the real complex semantics during heritage investigation and conservation processes. The expected outcome is to improve both the represented knowledge and to automatize the comprehension, recognition and valorisation of these assets by a reasoning system on ontologies.

summary The contemporary climate crisis pushed communities of actors, cities and citizens to use smart technology, digital platforms, and data-based intelligence to steer creative solutions for greening in their urban ecosystems. This phenomenon brought about an increasing imperative for citizen participation and inclusion, in the co-design of green infrastructures, suggesting alternative ways to deal with the lack or misuse of public space. In this framework, this paper analyzes the case of ''UnionYouth in Chania'', a project that aims a) to build an environmental awareness strategy for Generation Z, b) to promote capacity-building processes related to climate change and environmental protection, c) actually transform the city public space through participatory processes. Specifically, the project describes the creation of a digital platform and a mobile app consisting of several engagement tools that allow interaction between the digital community of youth, the city's decision-makers, and city greening actors. Therefore, the first part of the paper talks about the necessity of promoting today's participatory processes in the city for climate change mitigation through a literature review that emerged in the last decade. The second part of the paper examines a case study, namely UnionYouth in Chania, a digital collaborative platform that promotes methods for greening the city through district-based, activity-based, and network-based redesign solutions. The third part of the paper brings about interesting reflections on the relationship between the analog and digital world, and how bottom-up processes may be an important tool in city planning. The overall scope of the analysis of the specific case study is to bring insights into the architectural world, as a means to create more bridges with citizens and communities and contribute to their greening understanding.

summary Bushfires are a global phenomenon, closely connected to climate change and safety, resilience and sustainability of cities and human settlements. Government agencies, architects and researchers across institutions are committed to improving Australia‚s resilience to bushfires yet grappling with ways to further mitigate risks. ‚Build back better‚ is the often-used phrase to support bushfire resilience, yet there remains a limited understanding of how secondary structures, such as storage sheds, garages, and fences contribute to or mitigate fire loss. These secondary structures are integral to properties yet fall, largely, outside land use planning approval processes and other regulations. Computational modelling can be adapted to deliver visualisations that increase awareness. We developed several simulation approaches which addressed distances, relationship to and the construction materials of secondary structures, terrain slopes and environmental forces. We conclude that gaming engines may offer the optimal immersive opportunity for residents and others to visualise fire risks related to secondary structures to increase awareness and improve bushfire readiness behaviours.

summary The migration of design education to reliance on computer-based techniques requires new ways of thinking about environments which can effectively support a diverse set of activities. Both from a spatial standpoint and a computing resource standpoint, design studios must be inevitably reconfigured to support new tools and reflect new ways of communicating. At Harvard's GSD, a commitment to incorporating computer literacy as a fundamental component of design education enables us to confront these issues through the implementation of a heterogeneous network imbedded in an electronic design environment. This evolving prototype of a new design studio, its development and its potential, will be the subject of this paper. A new style design environment is built upon an understanding of traditional techniques, and layered with an awareness of new tools and methods. Initially we borrow from existing metaphors which govern our interpretation of the way designers work. Next we seek to extend our thinking to include allied or related metaphors such as the library metaphor which informs collections of software and data, or the laboratory metaphor which informs workspace groupings, or the transportation metaphor which informs computer-based communications such as electronic mail or bulletin boards, or the utility services metaphor which informs the provision of network services and equipment. Our evaluation of this environment is based on direct feedback from its users, both faculty and students, and on subjective observation of the qualitative changes in communication which occur between and among these groups and individuals. Ultimately, the network must be judged as a framework for learning and evaluation, and its success depends both on its ability to absorb our existing metaphors for the process of design, and to prefigure the emerging metaphors to be envisioned in the future.

summary This paper presents a comprehensive project-based research investigation that uses both drawing and modeling to challenge conventional design space. Situated at the University of Kentucky-College of Design Applied Computation Center (CoDACC) in Lexington, KY, this independent undergraduate research project reveals an immersive framework that develops, evaluates, and assesses both graphic and three-dimensional information at full scale. This research provides a framework that seamlessly negotiates analog and digital means of communication and prototyping. This paper outlines the micro-hybrid design process to frame topics germane to today's increasingly complex built environment. The paper also includes the micro-hybrid decision-making matrix and discusses the evaluation of the produced artifacts. The research demonstrates how the micro-hybrid process can reveal both the craft and consequences related to design experimentation and construction. Further, the micro-hybrid process has been shown to deepen a student's understanding of the composition of materials and a student's awareness of forces and structural loads, which in turn has produced a deeper appreciation for the principles of structures and an improved mastery of manufacturing jointing details.

summary Faced with the need for understanding the physical context of the projects that come under their jurisdiction, architects, urban designers, and conservationists strive to secure congruent information. Practicing professionals are not set to carry out the collecting of information themselves. As information “users,” they reach out to information “providers,” including surveyors, photogrammetrists, and GIS specialists, to secure needed information. Information providers employ a gamut of methods to survey and document design project contexts, including land surveying techniques, stereophotogrammetry, rectified imagery, laser scanning, and GIS. This study deals with digital rectified imagery (DRI) only and is aimed at creating an awareness of the method characteristics in the minds of the information users toward taking advantage of available DRI documentation opportunities offered by the information providers. As part of the methodology for this study, the authors have selected a subject building, captured a number of images through a digital camera, and processed the images using image processing software. The significance of this study resides in enabling the information users to understand RDI and to tap on its potential for consummating design, planning, and conservation projects.
