summary This paper will examine the results from a research collaboration between (BIM Software Manufacturer) and (School), whose problem statement focused on supporting robust interoperability by defining goals focused on multivariate conceptual design tools. The collaboration included design faculty, students and software professionals, the latter providing access to a broad range of design simulation tools either commercially available or currently in development. The tools were developed first through case studies and background research, followed by the design and implementation of novel computational methods advancing the architectural design workflow by seeking to create comparative tools which allow a designer to connect multiple data typologies in a single model. With advanced computational tools employed both as standalone resources and embedded in parametric loops, we sought to provide immediate feedback on design goals.

summary The method proposed in this project addresses the parametric manipulation of a given pattern to respond directly to a parametric surface. The research attempts to propose a method for attaching fixed sized objects to a free flowing surface or "blanket." The model can be used to interrogate a series of shapes and forms with the same componentry. Continuing the research of Kevin Rotheroe, Yale University and founder of FreeForm Design. Rotheroe and his students developed a series of studies in material and surface properties. By utilizing a proven pattern, the proposed method sets parameters derived from the formal properties of the original pattern and produces a new pattern that is responsive to the curvature of a complex surface. The workflow developed in this research consists of a complex blending of tools in Rhino Grasshopper and Gehry Technologies Digital Project. The intent is to achieve the aesthetics and structure offered by Rotheroe's original research and to add a responsive precision that provides an accurate adaptation of the pattern based on curvature of a specific computationally defined surface.

title Running Interference: Complex Systems Intervention as Design Process

summary This paper presents a case study problem statement tested in the design studio with the intent of teaching methods for engaging systematic thinking as a process for deriving solutions to parametric design problems. The intent is to address the simulation environment developed through complex systems and interject a curve ball, or unexpected constraint delimiting the solution as part of the design process. This method was tested through the submittal of the projects to international design competitions. The students were asked to manipulate the competition criteria by appealing not only to the design criteria but also to the juries desire (whether conscious or unconscious) for novel sustainable processes of material usage and program. This material ecology is developed as a method for linking parametric modelling, not as a process for the application of a construction technique, but as a way to pre-rationalise material constraints and discover how program and form can operate within those constraints. In the first year of the studio two of six teams were selected as finalists and in the second year of the studio five of seven of the teams were selected as finalists.

title An Open Daylighting Simulation Environment

summary Various studies have shown that performance simulation tools have not been integrated effec- tively in the architectural design process. The conventional lighting simulation tools have been characterized as decision verification tools rather than design support tools. Particularly in the early design stage, when crucial and often irreversible decisions are made, this evident lack of appropriate lighting simulation environments represents a serious drawback. The "mono-directionality" of the conventional simulation tools can be identified as one of the factors responsi- ble for insufficient integration of computational lighting modeling tools in the design process. In response to this circumstance, this thesis presents the conceptual background and the proto- , typical realization of an "open" daylighting simulation environment (GESTALT) to support architectural lighting design and education. Open simulation environments aim at extension (and inversion) of the design-to-performance mapping mechanisms of the conventional build- ing performance simulation tools. Toward this end, two fully operational versions of GESTALT have been implemented. GESTALT-01 is an explicit implementation based on invertible "fast-response" computational modules. GESTALT-02 is an implicit version that uses a comprehensive computational daylight simulator and investigative projection technique for performance-driven design exploration. Concepts, implementations, case studies, contributions and future directions are presented.

summary Using a limited "kit of parts" [two 8 ft. 2x4's and one sheet of 1/2" birch plywood] students in teams of two are to design and construct an "interface" which joins the physical world to the virtual world of the web. The location for this piece of furniture [the CYBERjack] will be a local library in Okolona, Mississippi, where existing web computers are to be housed. The students modeled the design using formZ, then plotted full-size templates to be used in cutting the actual parts out of wood in the shop. The device was supposed to join the Body to the Machine. The project lasted 2 weeks and was part of a 4th year studio which participated in the ACADIA Library Competition last year.

summary The recent development in Virtual Reality (VR) allows for novel engagement in participatory urban design. Despite that any design approach cannot include and address all items that are relevant or needed during a design process, social VR design instruments offer additionality via their real-time generation and visualisation possibilities that are unmatched in conventional realms. The research employs an anthropogenic approach to design research to engage end-users in the design process. An Immersive Virtual Environment (IVE) instrument 'SketchPad' allows laypersons to design successfully urban forms. SketchPad engaged laypersons in a meaningful design discussion and generations of urban spaces. The research discusses the findings of the experiments. The paper concludes with a reflection of how non-experts as co-designers can use IVE instruments to drive change of their neighbourhood proactively and to positively impact on the liveability of their neighbourhood.

A rural-urban intervention is done without understanding the conceptualization and development. This paper presents a methodology for analyzing the lagoon habitat, premises in the creative process, design and construction for future interventions, and a reflection on the use of criteria for urban and architectural design in modern water villages. This work is part of research “Peoples Water in Lake of Maracaibo Basin: History and Habitat”.

Digital systems of architectural production use scanning, image manipulation, visualization, solid modeling, computer aided drafting, animation, rendering, etc. Digital systems have also been called "electronic", "computer-aided", "virtual", etc. The difficulty lies in the underdeveloped state of the necessary methods, techniques, and theories to relate traditional and new media. Recent investigations on the use of multiple iterations between manual and electronic systems to advance architectural work show promising results. However, these experiments have not been sufficiently codified, cross-referenced and third party tested to conform a reliable knowledge base. This paper addresses this shortcoming by bringing together reported experiences from diverse researchers over the past decade. This summary is informed by more than three years of continuous investigation in the impacts of analog-digital conversations in the design process. The goal is to establish a state-of-the-art common foundation that permits instructors, researchers and practitioners to refer to, utilize, test, criticize and develop. An appendix is included providing support for the paper's arguments.

summary This work was developed based on the register of health servicesin the municipality of Concepción Chile, selecting three establishments as models of concentrated consume. Technical morphological and location characteristics of each facility were analyzed in order to identify the volumetric relation, the influence of shadows and solar potential roofs and facades, linking with the future implementation of materials and technologies that present thermal and /or photovoltaic properties. The computer implementation of parameterization and simulation applied to the morphology of each facility analyzed the active parameters that affecting solar gain, stating a relationship between volume, solar collection, and the percentage of energy demand covered.

summary Knowledge based design is acquired through one's exposure to a large number of projects and establishes a set of patterns regarding organizations, techniques, procedures, heuristics, priorities and preferences. Over time, designers develop a distinctive set of principles that represent their own individual methods of addressing design problems. Creative designers not only design the solutions, they also design the problems. Although their repertoire of resources includes explicit declarations regarding recognizable problem types, physical components, design rules, or evaluation methods of different aspects, design decisions are also driven by vast amounts of tacit considerations derived from professional experience. Designers make such decisions balancing design intent and technical requirements in a very efficient and synthetic manner. We designers know what we do, but it is not so clear how we do it. This conference is an invitation to engage in a dialogue concerning how Design Knowledge can be represented and manipulated within digital environments.

summary The purpose of this study is the quantification of the exposure of occupants to daylight illuminance levels. The case study is the typical floor of a patient tower occupied by nurses in twelve hours shifts, from 7 am to 7 pm. Significant evidence exists regarding the positive impact of access to daylight on staff outcomes in healthcare facilities in terms of reduction of stress, absenteeism, medication errors, and burn outs. However, the standard daylight simulation methods evaluate the building and do not capture the dynamic nature of people’s behavior while moving through the space. The proposed approach combines agent-based simulation and daylight performance analysis to compute the occupants’ exposure to daylight levels throughout the year. The results show the discrepancies between building-centric and human-centric types of analysis and the contribution of dynamic simulation methods to design occupancy schedules to warranty equitable access to daylight to building occupants.

summary This study introduces the Meta-Modeling process adopted from the Model Based System Engineering field (MBSE) to explore an approach for the generation of design alternatives beyond the restrictions of the Parametric Models that mainly produce geometric variations and have limitations in terms of topological transformations during the exploratory design tasks. The Meta-Model is the model of attributes and relationships among objects of a particular domain. It describes objects and concepts in abstract terms independent from the complexity of the geometric models and provides mapping mechanisms that facilitate the interfacing with parametric parts. The flexibility of these computer-interpretable and human-readable models can contribute to creatively manipulate the design knowledge embedded in parametric models.

summary Cultural heritage is traditionally mediated through institu- tional bodies that are authorised to broadcast heritage information, whereas new media technologies such as social media platforms con- tinue to enforce individual storytelling and information sharing. Therefore GLAMs (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) have to cope with a shift of public interest from their services to more ac- cessible, entertaining and democratic engagements available as ‘liv- ing’ media. Unmediated cultural heritage is the paramount aim of this work and, in a theoretical sense, a utopia for generation of authenticity or meaning-making. Within the realm of digital heritage, this study explores the nature of engagement with cultural heritage using an in- novative means. In this phase of the research, a photogrammetric model of Kashgar’s narrow alleys is deployed in a system, called Hy- brid Virtual Environment 3D (Hyve-3D). Via its 3D cursor technolo- gy, the concept of unmediated cultural heritage is unfolded through active participation, collaboration and interaction. Thus, in the context of heritage, this research explores a hitherto undocumented frontier of Hyve-3D designated to immersive collaborative 3D sketching.

summary We describe a computer program VOLUME for interactive 3D modelling of building which can be used in many problems (heat losses calculations, architectural evaluation, ...) where a geometric representation is required. The program is more than a tool to input a geometry: it is also a tool for design; manipulations are very easy and many design solutions can be tried. We then discuss about developments for improving the quality of that tool in the design process.
