title Designing within Virtual Worlds

summary This paper celebrates the successful outcome of a trial of an innovative multi-platform distributed design decision support system in which the shared design environment exists within the virtual world. The outcome is the result of a sustained three-year research and development effort, within an internationally recognised research group. The project set itself a number of ambitious targets within the broad spectrum of distributed design decision support, viz: • A multi-platform environment: the trial demonstrates inter-operability of different machine platforms - from a home PC to an international standard Virtual Reality Centre. • A distributed environment: the trial demonstrates the high level of understanding amongst the design team separated by time and space. • An ability to propose, discuss and agree upon, design decision from within the virtual world. Hitherto, virtual environments were viewing galleries; designers had to leave them to effect design changes in a conventional CAD package. The trial described in the paper amply demonstrates the potential to design, collaboratively and, in distributed mode, from within the virtual world. The two ideas upon which the system (known as JCAD-VR) is built are: • That all the users present in the virtual world have to be able to share the same virtual environment in a "transparent fashion"; • The user interface, instead of the traditional menu/windows based layout, is part of the virtual world itself. Any element of the interface becomes an object belonging to the 3D world and therefore it is treated as any other object. Each element of the interface can then be moved or scaled according to the user’s needs. The entire project is based on client-server architecture where every user logs into a virtual world and starts sharing design tasks with other users. The authors propose to present a video which demonstrates the positive outcome of the trials to date. More importantly, perhaps, the authors will put the achievements of the R+D into the context of past aspirations and developments in the subject area and, most importantly of all, suggest how these modest achievements will impact on the next decade of increasingly rapid R+D.

summary This paper re-establishes the theoretical framework for participatory design evolved in the late sixties and early seventies as part of the movement towards a more explicit design methodology and attempts an explanation of why the concept failed to gain commitment from the architectural and urban design professionals. The issue of user participation in the processes of building and urban design is enjoying renewed attention following its relative neglect over the last 20 years due, in large measure, to significant advances in emerging information technologies, particularly multimedia, virtual reality and internettechnologies. This paper then gives an account of two significant and relevant developments in the evolution of the application of informationtechnologies with which the authors have been engaged. These are:a responsive and interactive interface to wholly immersive and realistic virtual reality representations of proposed buildings and urban neighbourhoods. an intuitive and platform-independent VR modelling environment allowing collaborative evolution of the scheme from withinthe virtual world. The efficacy of these IT developments is tested in the context of a design exercise in which three designers, from distributedlocations and using different computer platforms, collaboratively design an Information Centre from within the virtual world.

summary This paper describes the inter-related use of three digital prototyping technologies by undergraduate students in the Department of Architecture and Building Science at the University of Strathclyde. These are: virtual reality computer graphics (CG), rapid manufacture (RM) of physical scale models from digital data, and acquisition of digital data relating to the shape of a physical object by some form of laser scanning (LS). The paper describes two experiments - one relating to housing, the other to a transport museum - to determine how seamlessly, accurately and usefully the (student) architect can move from one technology to another in the course of design.

summary This paper summarised a multi-media presentation which was authored without tuition by a 4th year student of the Department of Architecture & Building Science in the University of Strathclyde - Lindsay Johnston. In it she gives a detailed account of a 12 week project to design a Primary School relying very heavily on computer aided design support. It was a requirement of the brief that the design produced by the student should come within the (severe) cost, area and energy consumption constraints set out in the brief.

summary This paper suggests that the theoretic framework devised in the late 1960s to help structure the IT curriculum in Schools of Architecture has served the community of teachers and students well but must be re-visited to take proper account of the recent and rapid developments in Virtual Reality and Real Virtuality. The paper offers definitions which differentiate these terms and suggests that the emerging technologies will have a major impact on the issues of sustainability, user participation and creativity. It ends with an appeal for the discussion of the theoretical and philosophical ideas raised by virtuality, and the development of the skills to test them, to be put at the heart of the architectural agenda and curriculum.

summary The paper describes a recent project whose objective was to redesign GIMSEX-PERT, an existing architectural knowledge- based design system developed in 1987. Its critical generative problems appeared to be the rigid structure and limited evaluation criteria. The project's outcome is DESTOOLS, based on the 'object-oriented-methodology' inspired by the traditional trial-and-error approach. It includes a set of interchangeable design methods that can be applied interactively by any desired sequence, producing or transforming a GIMS Building System object. summary A design studio of the future shall be based on dislocated, distributed design services, and feature the ‘design by collaboration’ enabled by the computer transmitted information. However, in a collaborative design process, computer may take an additional role, i.e., as an “ultimately structured dynamic communication medium ... based on the notion of commitment and interpretation” (Winograd and Flores 1987). Various models of ‘intelligent’ design systems based on the ideas of ‘open, distributed, artificial intelligence systems’ have shown that the computer-based design agents which act on the object-to-be-designed model could be involved in a “conversation for action” (Winograd and Flores, Ibid.). The aim of the paper is to illustrate a computer-based design system that enables ‘a-kind-of’ conversations by the design agents before the design decisions were made. After the description of a design experiment and the conversation that went on between the design agents, the traits of the applied ‘design design system’ are discussed.

summary The purpose of this paper is to present a recent design offer for design and realisation of a sizable housing development. The computers were significantly involved in both, making the offer, and organisation of project design phase. The story illustrates some interesting relationships between IT and certain types of design problems. The paper presents how the offer was prepared, discuss whether the computers would be beneficial in getting the design tasks done, and finally, pose the question whether such design tasks could be achieved without the help of computers. The explicit design tasks and use of the computer tools make this case of "computerised craftsmenhip" appropriate for presentation in educational environments.

summary This paper proposes a self-assembling system for architectural application. It is a reaction to current building crisis and high energy consumption by building industry. This Unique system is based on a reconfiguration of passive elements by low-cost soft robots able to move inside as well as configure them into 2D/3D structures similar to recent Modular robots. A goal is to significantly reduce the high price and complexity of state of the art modular robots by minimization of mechatronic parts and using soft materials. The concept focuses on life-cycle management when one system can achieve assembly, reconfiguration, and disassembly with a minimum of waste. The paper compares three different versions of a self-assembly system called MoleMOD: MoleCUBE, MoleCHAIN, and MoleSTRING.

summary The paper explores the use of in-house developed self-reconfigurable modular robotic system in civil construction activities and investigates a concept where an arbitrary Civil Engineering structure or a daily use industrial product are self-assembled from a number of self-reconfigurable composite blocks. The system extends current range of modular robot systems (mDrs) where autonomous modules self-assemble into a wide variety of forms. However, contrary to conventional mDrs, MoleMOD has not mechatronic actuating parts permanently fixed to each individual module. The MoleMOD actuators are separable and operate inside the modules, tight them together or relocate them to required configuration. It significantly reduces number of expensive mechatronics parts and the environment the actuators operate. Although MoleMOD focuses on architecture, it can take over other mDrs tasks as research and rescue. This paper describes properties, advantages, foreseen applications, and basic design specifications of the second generation prototype.
