title PROXHY: a Process -Oriented Extensible Hypertext Architecture

summary This research describes a new architecture for hypertext environments. The architecture merges the process, object-oriented, and hypertext models to provide hypertext services to object-based, distributed, application components. Through this architecture, applications are integrated to form a comprehensive hypertext computing environment, allowing links to connect applications or objects in different applications. The architecture separates hypertext and application functionality so that multiple applications can use the facilities of a common hypertext layer. The design of the architecture is such that components can be extended or tailored in order to support future applications, multimedia objects, or the needs of specific applications or users. The process-based, object-oriented framework allows objects of arbitrary complexity to live and interact in a hypertext world. Additionally, the protocol and facilities which support component interaction provide location transparency, arbitrary object granularity, and parallel computation over a network. This dissertation provides a conceptual model of hypertext and a general architecture for hypertext system construction. Related literature from object-oriented programming, operating systems, multimedia applications, and database is discussed in terms of the architecture. A hypertext data model, computational model, and hypertext system taxonomy are used to discuss the capabilities of current hypertext systems. Interaction scenarios are provided in order to illustrate object interaction and the distribution of work among the components of the architecture. A prototype system, implemented to demonstrate the feasibility of the architecture, is discussed. The prototype illustrates all aspects of the architecture including distributed application and hypertext components, cross-application linking, and anchors acting as proxy objects for applications. Application scenarios, problems and limitations, and future research issues provide an understanding of the power of the architecture and its potential for impacting the design of next-generation hypertext systems.

summary In the quest to achieve the ambitious climate and clean energy targets the broad implementation of Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) is one of the keys. Photovoltaic (PV) modules can be installed above or on current roofing or traditional wall structures. In addition, BIPV devices substitute the skin of the exterior construction frame, i.e. the weather screen, thus simultaneously acting as both a climate screen and an energy producing source. However, while the integral planning strategy to building projects promotes the effective execution of BIPV, the limitation lies in the absence of both instruments and easy-to-use planning aid guidelines, particularly by non-PV experts in the early design stage. This study presents computational methods that help to quickly analyze the BIPV potential for a given building project and to suggest the optimal economical amount and location of the panels based on the building's energy demand profile.

title City information Visualizer Using 3-D model and Computer Graphics

summary 3-D models and computer graphics with its visual characteristics enables easier understanding of various information. Up until now 3-D models and computer graphics has not been used for the analysis of city information due to its high cost and the need for special techniques. Currently, we have discovered new technology in hyper medium based on network technology and lower costs. This paper focuses on the construction of an interactive and visual 3-D city information system, aiming at the 'idea processor' for research and analysis of city planning and market research. We have discovered the requirements necessary for the City Information Visualizer system. Using this technology we will construct the prototype system of the 3-D City Information Visualizer. This system is based on the personal computer and the Client/Server system. The system is then applied to practical city analysis. This paper presents the prototype system and its evaluation in a real project.

summary Buildings are the combined product of the efforts of many participants interacting in complex ways over a prolonged period of time. Currently, sequential communication among the participants is the standard means of collaboration. This method, which is well suited to current legal and professional practices, is inefficient, fraught with loss of information and prone to errors, cost and schedule overruns, and promotes optimization of individual parts at the expense of the overall project. This paper describes an integrated design environment that will facilitate collaborative decision making among the various participants, not merely communicate the results of decisions made by one participant to the other participants in the design team. It is based on the convergence of computing and telecommunication technologies, coupled with the emergence of new design paradigms, which together can overcome the technical difficulties associate with current collaborative design practices. It comprises three different modules: a product model, a performance model, and a process model (hence it is called P3). The paper presents each of these models and their integration into a unified framework.

summary Being the heart of any solid modeling system, much effort has been spent on formulating the data models which represent the shape of a polyhedral solid object within the computer in an accurate, unique and complete manner. This paper presents an example relational model as a complementary logical schema for viewing the shape database. It facilitates compact storage and supports non-manipulative query operations through the projection, selection and join operators defined for the relational model, without requiring expert knowledge of the manipulative structure. The flexibility of the relational model, compared with that of the hierarchical, manipulative one, allows easy extensibility and the association of non- geometric attributes with each data item

title The Hybrid Edge : A Topological Data Structure for Vertically Integrated Geometric Modeling

summary Generalizing the computational geometric support for the representation of designed artifacts over multiple different levels of symbolic abstraction (e.g., sketches, solid modeling, and drafting) is discussed. First, the need for integrating the representation and manipulation of points, lines, polygons and solids for the purpose of facilitating the design of artifacts at many levels of design abstractions established. Second, a vertically integrated model that supports the representation and manipulation of points, lines, polygons, and solids without redundancy, is presented. The particular roles of the operators and the operandi are discussed, along with their hierarchical integration. The utility of the model is demonstrated in performing operations that involve multiple different levels of data abstraction, such as splitting solids at an arbitrary polygon inscribed on their boundary. Finally, a particular implementation of the integrated model is presented. This implementation is based on the Hybrid Edge, a derivative from Baumgart's Winged Edge and Eastman's Split Edge models. The Hybrid Edge distinguishes between the roles of edges as topological adjacency information carriers and their role as carriers of directionality information. This distinction permits the Hybrid Edge to handle the different combinations of adjacency and directionality requirements imposed by different abstraction levels in the integrated model

summary Explicit representation of design knowledge is needed if scientific methods are to be applied in design research, and if computers are to be used in the aid of design education and practice. The representation of knowledge in general, and design knowledge in particular, have been the subject matter of computer science, design methods, and computer-aided design research for quite some time. Several models of design knowledge representation have been developed over the last 30 years, addressing specific aspects of the problem. This paper describes an approach that recognizes the multiplicity of design knowledge representation modalities and the dynamic nature of the represented knowledge. It uses a variety of computational tools to encode different aspects of design knowledge, including the realities, perceptions and the intentions it comprises. The representation is intended to form a parsimonious, communicable and presentable knowledge- base that can be used as a tool for design research and education

New software development technologies emerge at incredible rates that allow engineers and scientists to create novel, domain-specific applications. This study capitalized on a computer graphics technology based on the concept of the Scene Graph to design and implement a general-purpose 3D Visualization System that is Simulation and CAD-software independent. This system, the Dynamic Construction Visualizer, enables realistic visualization of modeled construction operations and the resulting products in 3D and can be used in conjunction with a wide variety of simulation tools. This thesis describes the Dynamic Construction Visualizer as well as the Scene Graph architecture and the Frame Updating algorithms used in its design.

summary The landscape design studio proposes to research synergies between teaching landscape architecture and using computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines as prototyping tools for students. The focus of the course is not to be proficient in CAAD-CAM technologies but to familiarize architecture students with landscape design and the problematic of large-scale topographical interventions and use these tools as verification instruments. Many prototyping tools are available to the students at the school and are easily accessible: a 3-axis mill, laser cutter, flatbed cutter and a 3D printer. Of all the CNC machines, the 3-axis mill allows for the best translation between idea and model in landscape modeling. Of interest to us is the continuous and more fluid exchange between paper/idea and a physical three-dimensional output, the ability to be able to re-shape continuously the model. The result is a series of models or evolutions, documenting the project idea as it has evolved from the initial concept to the final project.

summary To represent design, both physical and digital models are utilized in the process. However, they usually don't function in unison. In order to synchronize these two types of models, the changes made in one model are generally translated into the other one later. This study intends to provide a conceptual framework for a simultaneous and synchronized model for the use of material, structure, and performance in the preliminary design stage. The methodology of the study includes evaluating material attributes, structural systems, and building performance of a physical model in the digital environment by using a Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) interface. Because the cameras in MAR environment are mobile, the range of views can be expanded, and/or designs can be superimposed on user interfaces virtually. Thus, object interaction and navigation are all made possible. By offering a comprehensive, synchronized, and interactive design environment, where material, structure, and performance factors are incorporated both in physical and digital models, the suggested methodology will potentially aid users' decision-making process.

summary A fundamental assumption in this conference is that human actions in creating and modifying our constructed environments can be rethought and made better for the environment. There are few laboratories in which to conduct research; an isolated island system offers one such opportunity. This paper reflects on work that carried out in the past five years in the Galapagos Islands by a collaborative of researchers from five institutions. The research examines potential positive changes in urban settlements and their impact on a fragile ecology of the islands. In this work, we illustrate how small perturbations (disturbances) within urban systems can lead to changes not only within urban form but also in the citizen's environmental awareness and how these, in turn, can lead to positive changes in the environment. The paper discusses applications of models we developed using Python scripting, GIS, and agent-based modelling, as we applied them to design strategies, built outcomes and community awareness.

title MetropoGIS: A City Modeling System

summary We report on a new system to generate photo-realistic 3D models of real cities. So far, we focus on the accurate geometric andradiometric modeling of man-made structures. The modeling process starts with a 3D block model obtained from aerial images, aerial laser scans or GIS data. This block model is further augmented with geo-referenced terrestrial images of the facades. Theterrestrial images are either captured using a mobile multi-sensor-platform or an off-the-shelf digital camera. The relative orientationof terrestrial images is calculated automatically and fitted towards the 3D block model with minimized human input using vanishingpoints. 2D image features like lines are extracted from the images and used to model 3D lines using line matching techniques. Theextraction of dense 3D point clouds on the facades is based on a hierarchical point matching strategy over multiple oriented images.Facades are found by robust fitting of plane hypotheses through these 3D line and point clouds. The introduced city modeling systemdelivers a fully 3D geographic information data set and is called MetropoGIS.

title Construction simulation using parallel computing environments

summary The paper describes and compares alternative approaches to implementing construction simulation models within a multiprocessor computing environment. Both parallel-algorithmic and neural network based methods of simulating construction processes are considered, and compared with the conventional serial-algorithmic approach. The lines along which a simulation algorithm can be divided into tasks for parallel execution on a multiprocessor are first discussed, and the merits of each approach are identified. This is followed by a brief discourse on neural networks, their application to construction simulation, and the way in which such an implementation can be implemented within a multiprocessing environment. The merits and demerits of all approaches are discussed with particular reference to a model of an excavation system. A case study comparing the speed at which each implementation can process a simulation shows the neural approach to operate approximately two orders of magnitude faster than the alternatives. The paper concludes with an indication of future research to be conducted in this field.

summary In the domain of Facility Management (FM), the implementation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) poses significant challenges for the Facility Operation Manager (FOMr) in terms of effective integration into their regular workflow. Employing the Soft Systems Methodology (SSM), this study highlights a conducive environment that enhances the usability of BIM for the FOMr. By expanding the application scenarios of BIM within the FM field, we contribute to completing the lifecycle of building models. We introduce 'Text-based Building Information' (TxBI), a system designed to complement Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) while emphasizing a text-centric approach. TxBI strategically focuses on systematically integrating Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) components, which are pivotal for daily FM operations. It generates a simple yet versatile dataset derived from the as-built BIM deliverable, channeling it to Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and streamlined 3D systems. The utility of TxBI is exemplified through its application in commercial software environments, showcasing the creation of lightweight digital twins of completed buildings. Significantly enhancing FOMrs’ access to building information, TxBI establishes a more versatile data environment for all building stakeholders. The accumulation of comprehensive information throughout the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) phase culminates in enhanced asset management and extended longevity of buildings.

summary Cellular automata models of urban change have been criticised for their lack of behavioural theory and representation in simulating urban change. It has led to a plea for developing multi-agent models. As a first step into this direction, this paper discusses the formulation of a combination of a cellular automata representation for an initial configuration of land use. This is linked to an activity-based model of travel demand, which generates varying demand for facilities across space. Agents, representing facility providers respond to this demand in locating and resizing their facilities. The interplay between these components then results in urban dynamics. The model is illustrated using a hypothetical example of urban forms.

summary In the time since European architects first began using computers in the building design process, the digital revolution has transformed how architects use planning tools completely. Today, digital tools are an indispensable part of planning practice. Besides a wide variety of digital modeling tools, parametric tools offer architects diverse options for generating cybernetic building models as BIM-models or homeostatic parametric geometry models. Cybernetic models help us to describe the buildings as a system and can improve planning efficiency. The aim of planning is to construct or fabricate an end result. The integration of digital fabrication methods in the digital chain is a fundamental goal if architects are to benefit from the progressive development of computer controlled machine tools. Fabrication integrated digital models can automate the planning process up to the production stage and enable the efficient fabrication of building components. The increased efficiency of planning and fabrication has facilitated a growing proliferation of buildings of increasing geometric complexity. Computers can open a door to the realization of new forms, spaces and construction systems to architects that understand the principles of fabrication-integrated cybernetic modeling.

summary An Urban and Regional Planning System based on a geographical information system was developed using four sub-systems consisting of a digital map system, a database system, an analysis and forecast system and a planning system. In this case ARCVIEW GIS software was used as a development tool. The digital map system is formulated by the planar orthogonal coordinate system. The data is converted from digital maps issued by the Geographical Survey Institute of Japan (GSI). The database system has layers of data sets, which consist of statistical data, attribute data of geographical points and characteristics of natural features and the built environment. Several sets of principal census data havebeen converted to mesh data. These kinds of data sets are also utilized to this system. LANDSAT TM data is converted into vector data and linked to the same coordinate system. The analysis and forecast system consists of statistical or mathematical analysis, forecasts and visual presentations of the results. The planning system consists of some planning models and reviewing techniques to evaluate alternatives. As an example, this paper examines the relationship between land use and the temperatureon the ground level in built-up areas.

summary Actual developments of digital maps and tools given by GIS-systems provide the possibility to develop new methodologies to handle land-cover data for modelling purposes. At any rate empirical applications are still rare within the Geosimulation studies and yet there is not an established methodology. The aim of the work has been to construct a cellular automata (CA) model of a sprawling city region within the German context, based on empirical data. The urban land-use classes (LUC) are considered as a higher organisation level of different building typologies and relative functions. These define the land-use patterns as self-organized from their complex spatial iterations, based on limited local information exchange. On the one hand the synthesis capacity of the CA models has been verified, even without socio-economical variables. On the other hand, it has been seen that the still early evolutional state of digital land-cover datasets are too premature to fully suite the modelling purposes.
