title The Complexity of Manipulating Hierarchically Defined Sets of Rectangles
source 40 p. : ill. Pittsburgh, PA: Department of Computer Science, CMU., April, 1981. CMU-CS-81-109. includes bibliography
summary Algorithms that manipulate sets of rectangles are of great practical importance in VLSI design systems and other applications. Although much theoretical work has appeared recently on the complexity of rectangle problems, it has assumed that the inputs are given as a list of rectangles. In this paper the authors study the complexity of rectangle problems when the inputs are given in a hierarchical language that allows the designer to build large designs by replicating small designs. They show that while most of the problems are NP-hard in the general case, there are O(N log N) algorithms that process inputs obeying certain restrictions

title A influência de Frank Lloyd Wright sobre João Batista Vilanova Artigas – uma análise formal [The Influence of Frank Lloyd Wright on João Batista Vilanova Artigas - A Formal Analysis]
source SIGraDi 2009 - Proceedings of the 13th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 16-18, 2009
summary This study intends to propose a new use of the shape grammar: verify the influence of a certain architect’s language over another architect’s language. Some Brazilian modern architecture critics suggest the existence of an influence of Wright’s prairie houses over Artigas’ early work, but the methods used to reach to this conclusion are always empirical and not very objective. The present work aims to confirm this influence in a more rational manner, comparing Wright’s prairie houses grammar developed by Koning and Eizenberg (1981) to Artigas’ first phase grammar that will developed in this work.

title A Representation Approach to the Tower of Hanoi Problem
source 22 p. : ill. Wollongong: Department of Computing Science, University of Wollongong, August, 1981. includes bibliography
summary By making the moving direction of each disc explicit in the representation, a bit-string so constructed can be used to drive the Tower of Hanoi algorithm. The behavior of disc moves is further analyzed based on the bit-string representation. It has been shown that the bit-string for moving n discs can be used to generate successively the Gray codes of n bits

title Matrices of Fibonacci Numbers
source 12 p. Wollongong: Department of Computing Science, University of Wollongong, October, 1981. includes bibliography
summary The matrices of Fibonacci numbers (called windows) possess some unusual properties which are not shared by normal matrices, such as commutativity under multiplication and +1 for all determinants. The beauty of multiplicative closure lends a hand to the fast computation of generalized order-k Fibonacci numbers in O(k2 log n) time

source ACADIA 2023: Habits of the Anthropocene: Scarcity and Abundance in a Post-Material Economy [Volume 3: Proceedings of the 43rd Annual Conference for the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) ISBN 979-8-9891764-1-0]. Denver. 26-28 October 2023. edited by A. Crawford, N. Diniz, R. Beckett, J. Vanucchi, M. Swackhamer 24-32.
summary The Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) was founded on October 17, 1981. The first meeting was held at Carnegie-Mellon University and attended by 24 founding members. When the history of ACADIA is discussed, out of these two dozen founders, three are frequently noted: William Mitchell, Charles Eastman, and Chris Yessios. Mitchell was a pioneer in computer-aided design and smart cities research and is, as Wassim Jabi, ACADIA’s 21st president put it, “one of ACADIA’s most famous founding members.”1 Eastman was not only ACADIA’s first president, but also one of the leading figures in the history of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and is often referred to as “the father of BIM.” Yessios is widely known for his work at Ohio State University and his role in developing Form.Z.

title Producción colaborativa de material de enseñanza-aprendizaje de Gráfica Digital con aportes multidisciplinarios [Collaborative production for taught-learning materials for digital graphic with multidisciplinary contributions]
source SIGraDi 2006 - [Proceedings of the 10th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Santiago de Chile - Chile 21-23 November 2006, pp. 117-121
summary For a contribution to problem solving processes at different areas, this paper presents the use of Digital Graphics as a knowledge object for a distance teaching/learning workshop. At the Learning Management System, different theoretical subjects with supporting tools were proposed, and exercises requiring collaborative work. An specific didactic situation using available technologies at Internet for 3D modelling, combined with satellite images and geographic information program was proposed. The final works were then shared by a 3D models repository. As a complement of this experience and in relation with their professional work, every student proposed a new didactic situation including Learning Objects, sharing them with the others members of the group, through conceptual maps built up in a co-operative way.

summary Founded in 1995 LAB[au], laboratory for architecture and urbanism, links theoretic research LAB[a+u] to concrete works of conception and realisations LA.BAU. LAB[au] elaborates a “hyperdesign” investigating the implications of new technologies of communication and computation in spatiotemporal and social processes and their forms of representation as architecture and urbanism. The transposition of the hypertext model to architectural and urban concepts question the mutation of the spatial and semantic construct of space. The definition of architecture as a code is based on “glocal” systems according to the processes of computation and communication.

title Materiais didáticos paraoensino presencial e não presencial de perspectiva [Pedagogic Materials for Distance and Face-to-face Teaching of Perspective]
source SIGraDi 2004 - [Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Porte Alegre - Brasil 10-12 november 2004
summary The didactic activity related to the teaching of Perspective has been revised considering the possibility offered by the computing tools. This review must evaluate the potentialities of concepts and procedures related to the traditional techniques as sources for architectural graphics expression, before suggesting its suppression. It is possible to improve the accuracy and quickness controlling the visualization parameters of three-dimensional models. On the other hand, it is necessary to explore the development of the ability to construct quick hand made perspectives (sketches). This work searches for the development of a structure to the teaching process, which emphasizes the potentiality of both ways, traditional and computerized. It explores the flexibility of teaching, from face to face to distance learning, and introduces an enlarged structure of knowledge able to support the traditional and also a computerized process of representation.

source SIGraDi 2004 - [Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Porte Alegre - Brasil 10-12 november 2004
summary This project involves the creation of an architecture of music which may be defined as a series of interdisciplinary steps which seek to generate four-dimensional virtual spaces for the materialization of music. This materialization uses music as its .genetic information ., the virtual space as its medium, and the execution time of the musical piece as the fourth dimension to a three-dimensional virtual space. Within this space, each instrument.s execution is represented by a shape whose properties undergo changes resulting from the musical information. Through the use of new Virtual Reality techniques, we will soon have the possibility to be inside the music, as a habitable place. The achievement of this project is to provide the opportunity to experience this representation through virtual animation.

title Enseñanza de la representación manual y digital, para arquitectos y diseñadores [Teaching Hand and Digital Representation to Architects and Designers]
source SIGraDi 2004 - [Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Porte Alegre - Brasil 10-12 november 2004
summary The supremacy of the digital means of representation and communication and the resulting shift of the manual means in the field of design and architecture, have engendered multiple opinions and literature. They focus and analyze the virtues and risks, the losses and substitutions, and the different expressive, productive and conceptual results of their leading role in the creative process. Furthermore, if we consider both as two extremes, apparently opposed, a broad panorama of combinations and additions are produced by the emerging group of hybrid practices. This motivated the development of a research project in the Universidad Nacional del Litoral de Santa Fe, Argentina, under the Program CAI+D 2000 dealing with Design and the Analog – Digital Means. From this project emerged a collection of conceptual speculations and experimentations in the extended field of representation, extended by the incorporation of new means and hybridations, searching for new parameters and methods for professional training and practice. Key words: analog, digital, graphics, means, representation.

summary The challenges on the ways of producing and teaching architecture, in the face of new digital technologies, led us to develop guidelines for updating didactic strategies in the area of teaching geometry and graphic representation in architecture courses. In order to do so, it is proposed to use the SWOT matrix as a way to cross-check what is being discussed. To identify the factors of the matrix, in the research environment we identify Opportunities and Threats and, using as examples the works of the Sagrada Familia Temple and the Guggenheim Museum, we identify Strenghts and Weaknesses.

title Modelación de Actividades [Modeling of Activities]
source SIGraDi 2002 - [Proceedings of the 6th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Caracas (Venezuela) 27-29 november 2002, pp. 151-154
summary Despite increasing interest in the functionality and humanization of architecture, scarcely the occupation of buildings are studied and it lacks methods to represent activities in the spaces. By this reason, it proposes a system such integrates simulation of processes and virtual modeling software, to program the behavior of tri-dimensional characters based on the probabilistic evolution of events, testing this approach in the study of emergency services of hospitals. It describes the procedure developed and reflections about temporal representation, demonstrating that modeling of activities allows to suggest functional and spatial improvements.

summary ¿Can the computer improves the architectural creativity? This question is explored through a Virtual-Reality system developed for the modeling of timber structures, based on parametric elements, constructive programming and immersive visualization on real-time. Making experiences of evaluation with advanced students of architecture, whose use the system in the beginning of projects, compared with other group use not the system. This research faces the possibilities to rationalizate part of the creative process in architecture, broading the role of computer and its contribution to quality of design, and extending the possibilities to teach and share the creation of project. It is argue that major potential in this field is the swiftness, formal variety and spatial living of design, challenging the differences between objective and subjective.
