summary This work presents an analysis of recent Crowdmapping and Collaborative Mapping initiatives in Brazil. In our discussion, we argue that Crowdmapping and Collaborative Mapping technologies can contribute to the development of better representations of issues that affect communities, as well as to the development of more stable forms of civic engagement and social innovation. In addition, we discuss we discuss how design can contribute to Crowdmapping and Collaborative Mapping initiatives in order to support the development of more appropriate public policies for these communities.

title Generating Alternatives For Siting Using Genetic Algorithms and Multiple Criteria Decision Techniques

summary It is believed that a fundamental step in the structuring of a siting problem is generating alternati-ves. This task should occur at the beginning of a process for facility location, giving a preliminary insight into the feasibility of the project in the area of concern by identifying a manageable number of feasible alternatives for careful review and consideration. The purpose of this paper is to present a methodology aimed at generating alternatives for siting of facilities taking into account a number of criteria. These criteria comprise environmental, economical and the action's inherent technical aspects. The search is carried out by applying genetic algorithms (GA's) which are natural phenomena based algorithms for optimization and random search procedures. According to the GA's terminology, a fitness function measures the worth of each candidate alternative codified into a chromosome. It was thought that the merging of aspects of multiple criteria theory and genetic algorithms is essential for the problem of generating alternatives in location problems. The aim of this integration is the improvement of the theoretical principles upon which the fitness function is based, leading to the construction of a robust set of alternatives. The paper describes the integration of both multiple criteria theory and GA's and discusses the results.

title Analysis of a Collaborative Computer Based Design Experience

summary The design experience referred to in this paper deals with the creative process for developing the pre-design of a new building for the Architecture and Urbanism Department of the Federal University of Santa Catarina / Brazil. The methodological proposition was to develop the design in a collaborative way and to try to use computers from the very beginning of the process. A tri-dimensional computer model was constructed on the sketch phase. Plans, sections and views were generated from this unique 3D model in order to assist development of ideas, coordination and visualization. As soon as the design alterations were defined, the 3D model was updated in order to generate automatic new drawing documents. Due to the number of design team components (8 people) and the high level of design complexity, constant hardcopies were necessary to ease designer’s participation in the idea propositions during meetings.

summary This paper describes the beginning of a project called TEAR_AD: Network for Teaching and Learning Technology in the areas of Architecture and Design. Such project aims to support the problem of Professors, Lecturers, and students lack of knowledge about a whole set of technologies that can turn a project more precise and responsive in terms of constructibility, sustainability and general performance. They have problems in keeping updated about those technologies and, in consequence, do not apply them in their practices. In order to explain the strategic plane of the project, that consists in the first part of the Garrett Methodology for Experience Design, the identification of Personas, representing the target public, the use of the benchmarking to identify possible features to be used in the system, and so on, are described. Considerations about how to pursue the implementation and maintenance of the designed system are outlined.

summary There is a need to develop knowledge of BIM in Brazil, because it enable the integration of phases of the building life cycle, contributing to the management of activities, making it possible improve the quality of the product, reducing conflicts between disciplines, rework, fostering communication among those involved etc. However, for the BIM to be incorporated, it is necessary to restructure the project process, so that there is greater collaboration between designers. So, the uses, activities and procedures are proposed on project management, aiming the implementation of BIM.

summary Before popularity of GIS a map is a tool with two basic functions - storage of spatial data and presentation of spatial information. Now, a digital database store spatial data and cartographic visualization is how spatial information usually is presented. Recent technological development applied to visualization area can increase analyse and interpretation capacity of professionals concern with urban planning, design and management. In other hand, many professionals and students involved with urban studies are not familiar with GIS software and this can limit casual users to access urban databases. One solution is to build software that allows direct visualization of spatial information based in users needs and knowledge. The project discussed in this paper introduces a computer application structured like a hypermedia atlas using concepts from cartographic modelling. The city of Salvador is represented by a model based in a combination of maps, and others images. User composes visualization.

summary Nowadays, there is a widespread awareness towards environmental issues. This is already visible in architecture by the increasing number of analysis tools that evaluate different performance criteria. However, the application of these tools is usually restricted to the final design stages, conditioning the implementation of design changes. Performance-Based Design (PBD) is an approach that addresses this limitation. Through PBD, architects integrate analysis tools since early design stages to make informed decisions regarding the performance of their designs. Since the success of PBD highly depends on the number of evaluations that can be performed, these approaches usually end up benefiting from Parametric Models (PMs), which facilitate the generation of a wide range of design variations, by simply changing the values of the parameters. Furthermore, in order to more efficiently achieve a PBD approach, architects can take advantage of the combination between PMs, analysis tools, and optimization processes. In this paper, we explore this combination to optimize an exhibition space regarding its daylight performance and the material cost of the new elements intended for that space.

summary The architectural field is currently experiencing a paradigm shift towards a more environmentally-aware design process. In this new paradigm, known as Performance-Based Design (PBD), building performance emerges as a guiding principle. Unfortunately, PBD entails several problems, for instance, building design is often associated with the simultaneous assessment of multiple performance criteria, which dramatically increases the complexity of the problem. In this vein, recent works claim that coupling optimization tools with PBD approaches allows for more efficient and optima-oriented strategies. This approach, known as Algorithmic Optimization, is based on the use of an optimization tool combined with a parametric model of a design to iteratively generate more efficient design alternatives. This paper focus on evaluating and comparing different classes of Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) algorithms, namely, metaheuristics and model-based ones. In addition, in order to try to better understand the algorithms' suitability to different optimization problems, this research analyses two different MOO design problems.

summary The mediation by Augmented Reality, allows to add layers of virtual information to reality in natural and intuitive ways, guaranteeing interactions in real time and generating new perceptual stimuli not necessarily remitted exclusively to the field of vision. Interaction devices such as fiduciary markers are resources generally associated with RA experience, however these markers of paper-usually turn out to be ephemeral when implementation is done in open spaces and high traffic. The following work presents results in the analysis of materials that guarantee to be ideal for the permanent implementation of markers in pedestrian urban routes.

summary During the last years, insertion of technology accelerates its incursion both in the design process and in the teaching-learning process. Design education has gone through different visions: Some hold the vision of education in design with a look at professional training. Others, have chosen to study the roots and problems of the training process, the ultimate goal is to generate experts in future designers. An element that - consistently - is often absent from such discussions is the role played by prototypes in the teaching-learning process. This research reviews the role that the prototype has played, as a central element, in the process of collecting evidence, with a view to informing the decision making during the development of Project Design. The paper discusses the role that prototypes - from the standpoint of CoDesign, Evidence Design, and evolutionary design - have played in the teaching experiences of the last four semesters within a Computer Lab for students of Industrial Design. The systematization of information extracted from the research experiences has evolved from the Lab model to the Maker-space experience.

summary This research addresses the impact that technologies, particularly the Internet of Things, have when facing - directly or indirectly - the current panorama of a pandemic due to COVID-19. First, we review the literature and propose a context that allows for efficient clarification regarding two concerns: where should we insert this project? What are the implications and scope of such a decision? Secondly, we present experiences of implementation of IoT prototypes, which – in context - consider the education of the population of an apartment building, the mitigation and detection of COVID-19 symptoms, and the ability to obtain data from these experiences.

summary A visualization artifact, aims at assisting a process of collective and individual analysis of assessment and learning outcomes from participants in a design studio course. A research by design approach supported by the Nested Model for Visualization Design and Validation framework was used. Display modes in Cartesian structure diagrams and radial structure diagrams, were analyzed through heuristic methods and subsequently submitted to student user testing. The evidence provided by the case study indicates a positive qualitative assessment from students regarding the purpose of the tool but are not yet conclusive regarding optimal morphological representation of the information.

summary This paper aims to identify design strategies that integrate digital computational technologies to artifacts and installations for the interaction of museum visitors. Elements that enable the visitation experience to be satisfactory are identified through a recognition study of proposals for content mediating artifacts in museums based on theoretical aspects relevant to the understanding of human interaction with technology. It generates a classification of relevant design techniques from the cases listed on the analysis.

summary This paper aims to identify usability aspects arising from the interaction of museum visitors - with content mediation artifacts that use digital technology - in order to perceive design guidelines aimed at enhancing the visitor’s construction of knowledge. This was analyzed by the observation – in an audio and video survey - of fifteen users interacting with artificial intelligence as a guide to the museum experience on the project A Voz da Arte in the Pinacoteca de São Paulo museum.

summary A research article is presented that seeks to reflect on the relevance and possibility(s) of the incorporation of ontological approaches in the methodological articulation of parametric procedures in architectural design, having as object of study the algorithmic modeling for the digital fabrication of a laminar roof materialized with wood by sub-products from the production of national industries. Such methodological implementation makes possible, as research results, a conceptualization -through a taxonomic structuring supported by relevance- and a systematization by means of a meta-script framed in the universe of possibilities of the ontological approach. The debate problematizes the question of critical appropriation (the convening topic of the present edition of the Sigradi Congress) of methodologies that, arising in realities different from the Ibero-American one, have quickly had an impact in our environment to conclude on the need to emphasize the context parameter in the conceptualization of specific meta-scripts.

title The Fear Of The Digital: From The Elusion Of Typology To Typologics

summary It might seem that architecture has been forced to choose, once again, between two worlds of existence. One of them might be the construction of the tangible, the other, a “formal fantasy” that will never reach a legitimate status among the “tectonic” or the “structural”. This vague spectrum has confirmed the fear of loosing typology as a proof, of loosing a foremost validation for architecture. But one could see the virtual as a possibility to generate a structure of discourses and interactive tactics to reformulate the typological. This meaning that the virtual could transcend the so called “graphic” stigma and actually produce the discourses and spatial strategies to radicalize typology and move towards a radicalization of content.
