summary This paper explains the logistical and technical issues involved in design collaboration and how to address them strategically in projects for design, teaching and research. Five years of arranging projects, studying peer results and involving novices in exchanges point out the benefits and pitfalls of Internet partnering. Rather than a single universal technical solution, multiple solutions exist: Technical means must be tailored to specifics concerning the task and participants. The following factors need to be considered in finding the best fit between technology and group design: 1) Collaboratorsí profiles, 2) Mutual value of produced information, 3) Collaboration structure, and 4) Logistical opportunities. The success of a virtual studio depends upon clear task definition, aligned participant expectations and suitable engagement methods. We question the efforts required in the installation of expensive technologies for communication and visualization. Often technical systems support ancillary and non-beneficial activity.

summary This paper analyses a hybrid design approach; how physical and digital processes can inform each other in a multivalent design cycle. It describes the design of origami-inspired window shades, part of the Shaping Light project that explores how adjustable surface structures can modulate light levels and heat gain in response to the changing seasons. The screen uses sloped surfaces to diffuse light and create apertures that close when the screen is stretched and open when the screen is folded. The project complements digital methods for pattern proportioning and kinetic simulation with manual manipulation to generate 3D folding motifs and refi ne assemblies. Physical prototypes can shape digital refi nement by revealing visual and structural characteristics of materials, along with joint and production considerations. Physical models for simulating sunny and cloudy daylighting conditions provide a direct connection between spatial confi guration and visual effects. The paper concludes with guidelines for material-based digital-analog creation.

title Tradition and Innovation: Mixing digital and manual methods in designing a Cambodian Community Center

summary This thesis examines how an architectural problem with specific social and site constraints can be addressed by a formal solution. In the process of exploring formal possibilities, computer imaging techniques were used to complement traditional models and drawings. Because the methods reveal different aspects of the project, they elicit different perceptions.

The project yielded insights into the use of representational techniques in design. Changing media keeps the designer alert to alternate ways of understanding. Successive manifestations can keep the identity of the design shifting: useful for exploring variants, but antithetical to resolution. In presentation, traditional representations can make the work more legible. If traditional and digital media are shown together, they must be arranged to complement rather than compete with each other.

summary How can we make a set of digital assets useful for teaching and research? As we amass data, it is crucial to select and interpret what is presented. This paper describes how a collection of animated drawings has been made accessible through an iterative development process. It describes a Web matrix interface, interpreted lesson formats and an assessment method. The assessment method of tallying achievement on design criteria before a lesson reveals inherent challenges of the problem, tallying afterwards reveals the effectiveness of the lesson in addressing those challenges. Using space-planning layout problems, we found that students readily picked up simple graphic devices such as measurement grids, adjacency diagrams and thumbnail sketches. Students showed less immediate improvement on skills that require juggling of multiple criteria, such as meeting all programmed area size requirements.

Working with sketched lines, handcrafted finishing, geometric overlay, and tool path coding can lead a designer to unexpected results. Concentrating on forming processes moving through material over time encourages open-ended play. Iteratively examining how computer operations generate carved results provides a craftsman’s understanding of tools and materials.

summary This paper explains how to use animated drawings created with a commercial portable pen to understand and teach design process. By recording and replaying pen strokes, the Logitech Io digital pen allows us to examine the drawing process. We have been using the pen to collect expert drawings, analyse the techniques and then teach drawing strategies. The software’s animation timeline engages viewers by giving narrative sequence to a drawing, revealing sub-steps of the design or drawing process for interactive examination and discussion. The timeline allows viewers to pull apart layers of information, revealing initial strokes of complicated drawings, separating overlaid corrections and facilitating stroke counting for protocol analysis. In the classroom, students can see a variety of expert drawing techniques, use the pen in class and then immediately compare animated versions of their own efforts and expert examples. The ease of collecting new examples makes it possible to widen the range of examples to unconventional techniques.

summary Assessing the perception of street environments and understanding the relationships between their aesthetic qualities and pedestrian experiences are critical to promoting walking behaviour and enhancing urban residents’ long-term well-being. While Machine Learning-based analysis of Street View Imagery (SVI) has enabled a range of streetscape studies, the relationship between the visual qualities of cityscapes and people’s emotional responses is still under studied. This study used recently developed computational methods to quantify urban street qualities and related sentiments. It collected online reviews and employed Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods to understand how people perceive streets and which environmental features contribute to positive and negative street perceptions. The analytical framework developed in this study can support other high-resolution studies into the spatial-temporal perception of cityscapes in high-density cities across the world.

summary Elevated pedestrian systems can increase urban density and reduce congestion in urban spaces, which contributes to the sustainability of cities. In high-density cities such as Hong Kong, the complex system of underground passages and skywalks at multiple levels is crucial in facilitating efficient pedestrian circulation. While the relationship between street environments and pedestrian experience has been widely discussed, research on how the perceptual qualities of skywalk environments affect pedestrians’ walking preferences has not yet been addressed. This study demonstrates how the perceptual environmental features of skyway systems can be characterised in a quantitative and human-centric manner. Taking Central, Hong Kong, as a case study, it has investigated the walking environment of the skyway system and the environmental differences between skyways and sidewalks and has explored the relationships between subjective /objective street qualities and pedestrian’s perception. An improved understanding of the environment-behaviour relationships of these spaces can provide suggestions for designing more walkable and comfortable skyway systems that are better integrated in the fabric of the city.

summary Design process can be treated as a puzzle exploration process. With puzzle exploration as the interactive metaphor and mechanism, design collage reframes the design visual information as an interactive puzzle-solving game. Based on the design puzzle researches, this paper adapts an intuitive interface approach - physical interaction. A system using multi-touch technology (FTIR) called Collage Table has been implemented as the device to combine a design collage game with the physical interaction. The mechanism for invoking the search is developed and elaborated, and the implementation (both in software and hardware) and possible interaction are also documented in this paper.

title A GIS-based system for tracking pavement compaction

summary Compaction is an important operation for improving construction material stability in construction operations such as soils and asphalt pavement. Through the process of compaction, soil strength and stability can be increased to the magnitude required by the design. Quality control is an extremely important concern of State Highway Agencies and contractors. For asphalt pavements, performance and quality are affected by three primary factors: a properly designed mix, drainage, and adequate compaction. These three factors must be performed together to assure quality. For this reason, compaction is considered to be very important in the performance of asphalt pavements. This paper reports on research to develop a system to map the moving compaction equipment, transform this result into a geometrical representation, and to investigate the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to develop a graphical representation depicting the number of coverages. Results are stored in a permanent record that can serve as a historical document.

summary Dou Gong, pronounced in Chinese, and known as Bracket Set, is a vital support component in the ancient wooden tectonic systems. It is located between the column and the beam and connects the eave and pillar, making the heavy roof extend out of the eaves longer. The development of the bracket set is entirely a microcosm of the development of ancient Chinese architecture; the aesthetic structure and oriental artistic temperament behind the bracket make it gradually become the cultural and spiritual symbol of traditional Chinese architecture. In the contemporary era, inheriting and developing the bracket set has become an essential issue. This paper introduces the topological optimization method bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization (BESO) for form-finding. Through analyzing the development trend of bracket set and mechanical structure, the authors integrate 2D and 3D optimization methods and apply the hybrid methods to form-finding. This research aims to design a new bracket set corresponding to “structural performance-based aesthetics.“ The workflow proposed in this paper is valuable for architrave and other traditional building components.

summary Work at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) on laser radar imaging of a construction site is described. The objective of the NIST research is to make measurements required in a construction project quicker and cheaper than current practice and to do so without impacting existing operations. This can be done by developing techniques for real-time assessment and documentation in terms of 3-D as-built models of the construction process. Once developed, this technology may be used for other applications such as condition assessment of a hazardous environment where human intervention would be impossible.

title Civic Media Platforms and Participatory Urbanism: A Critical Reflection

summary In this paper, we explicate our research on technology-mediated urban experience specific to two hyper-local tests in which the space of the ‘public’ is transformed into a virtual network by connective broadcasting. The first case study presents collective mapping in Rio de Janeiro toward increased civic engagement and sustainability, the second tests documentation of political demonstrations for strategic and archival purposes for Occupy Boston. Grouped under the term “participatory urbanism,” the projects intend to explore how an individual activates interstitial space (between the physical city and hovering networks, between public and private) by engaging technology and civic media to affect change in the built environment. The physical and virtual environments serve as reciprocal sources of information, engendering a collective practice of shared encounters. We investigate how such encounters of user-centered activity through mobile and web-based media support or implicate the perception and manipulation of the built environment over spans of time and locations, and will highlight qualitative elements of a mobile and web platform designed for successful civic engagement and participatory urbanism.

summary One of the ways to improve design solutions is to make some variants of the design at the early stage of working on it. Such a process can be even more successful when it is based on computer techniques followed by comprehensive assessments of variants. The assessment of 3-dimensional and spatial solutions of industrial buildings is based on two groups of indices- technical and economical indices and the quality ones (criteria). Most of the indices belong to the first group while the second one is rather small. The list of the indices used in the procedure was worked out mainly for the assessment of finished projects and only a small part was worked out for the assessment of draft solutions.

summary The impact of urban renewal, specifically in countries experiencing rapid urbanisation due to population growth, has resulted in the erasure of urban culture and heritage in favour of repetitive homogeneity that has been synonymous with 20th century modernist planning models. One such region experiencing this rapid urban renewal is the Guangzhou region in southern China. The presented experiments examine Xian Village in Guangzhou, a culturally rich urban tissue currently experiencing redevelopment, and proposes an alternative model for urban renewal, employing a bottom-up approach to urban growth through the use of a multi-objective evolutionary model; presenting a model that integrates historic and existing urban characteristics adapted to future development plans.

summary This paper proposes a framework for applying Large Language Models (LLM) as a design partner in architectural design processes instead of a passive question-answering machine. The proposed design framework integrates LLM and Conversation Theory (CT) into a standard parametric design tool for architectural designers. The program establishes an ongoing conversation with the designer through verbal and non-verbal feedback by tracking brain activity and modelling commands. The program can collect conversation data for fine-tuning, thus progressively improving conversation effectiveness. The paper contributes to the knowledge area of architectural design by introducing a novel approach to integrating LLM and CT into the design process, simulated as a proof-of-concept pilot study within a commonly used design software.

title Site pre-cast yard layout arrangement through genetic algorithms

summary The use of modular construction has gained wide acceptance in the housing sector. Standardized modular units are often pre-cast on site. The establishment of site pre-cast yard, in particular arranging the pre-cast facilities within the compound, presents real challenge to site management. This complex task is further aggregated with the involvement of several resources with different transport cost. A GA-model is developed for the search for a near optimal layout solution. The fitness function is to minimize the total transport cost for a pre-determined daily output. The use of the model is illustrated by an example. When compared with the best solution within the initial population, 18.45% reduction in cost for resources flow was achieved by the near optimal layout arrangement arrived at the 673rd trial. It is also suggested that the model can be extended to other layout problems such as warehouse and production line.
