summary This text is intended to provide ideas for the ongoing discussion and to provide a description of chosen positive and negative, aspects of the implementation of digital technologies in research and popularization of cultural heritage – historic architecture. The paper concerns modern ways of perception and presentation in cultural heritage (with reference to the needs of presentation-popularization), which are twofold – traditional in situ presentations of architecture are still functioning, as are new-media methods, such as augmented reality (acronym AR) or body immersion. The starting point in discussing the topic indicated in the title is the conviction of the usefulness of new technologies, conditioned by a constant control, analysis and tracking of results achieved with their help, especially such results that have been unexpected and unforeseen.

summary Digital technologies and contemporary CAAD systems are increasingly being adopted in architectural practice. Thus, their impacts on buildings design process need to be addressed and explored, as there are signs of a potential revolution in AEC industry. This paper presents a methodology and preliminary results of a work-in-progress for a Master of Science dissertation. The main purpose of the study is to find similarities in practice in order to determine main characteristics and fundamentals of contemporary design process. It consists of a design praxiology approach according to Cross' taxonomy of design research. Three project cases developed by digital processes and explored by secondary data from literature reviews, complemented by documentary research, are presented as preliminary results, as well as their main similarities. Through the analysis of the cases, it was verified that the presence of BIM, parametric modeling and digital fabrication overlaps and promotes holistic and largely collaborative design processes. The role of collaboration is highlighted, which was presented as a key factor for the success of the projects. Future results from the described methodology should allow a more detailed and in-depth characterization of the contemporary design process.

summary Nowadays we deal with a real revolution in the computer science. Present times explorers no longer look for information in vast library files but rather they surf on Internet. The technological progress in the realm of computer studies made “the fathers unable to keep pace with their children”. That’s one of the reasons why it is so difficult to introduce new techniques into the routinized designing process. The problem is that some know “what” and the others “how”. At the times when drawing pens were ousted by rapidographs, communication between different generations of designers was easier. Both of these tools are, in fact very similar. It is the other way with the new computer science technique, which consists of complicated systems not so easy to access because of various economical, emotional, routine and habitual reasons. Changes in the designing process go step by step, in a much slower pace than the progress in computer hardware and software. It is difficult to accept the fact in professional environment that computer technique can assist the designer as a medium.

summary The need for regional styles to exist in architecture has been broadly and long discussed. In general, regionalisms are socially accepted and they should be employed. Discussions usually become more intensified together with the search for inspiration to create new styles in architecture. In Poland Stanislaw Witkiewicz, arts critic and theoretitian, a painter and a writer, created and developed “the Zakopane style” on the turn of the 19th century. This is the only one architectural style focussed on the regional features that has been preserved until nowadays. It referred both to architecture and industrial forms. It was received by the contemporaries with ambivalent attitude, from the uncritical enthusiasm to emotional negation. One side claimed that the style affected the national consciousness and united the nation without the State. According to the other side, “the Zakopane style”, when outside the Podhale region, shocked with its non-conformity to the surroundings. About 1910 there was an attempt to create the style not exactly regional but rather national. The designs referred to neoclassic Old Polish mansion house with a porch supported by columns and high mansard roof. Between 1915 and 1918 projects to rebuild the Polish villages and little towns were thrown open to competition. Afterwards, neatly published project catalogues presented universal, all-Polish type of architecture. In 1918, after I World War and after Poland regained independence, whole housing estates were built in manorial style. At the same time the described sets of competition projects were used together with the new ones, prepared by eg. Polish Hygenic Society (1936). All the project proposals show the all-Polish type of regionalism. Another intensification of discussion concerning the regional style is linked with the post-modernist ideas. Modernism-lacking ornament, cosmopolitan, without any homely features (by the way, he is jolly smart who knows what this “homeliness” is all about) despite its undeniable achievements has been finally faced with crushing criticism. Together with this reaction the search for inspiration in regional features of architecture has been revived. But then there has been a lack of Witkiewicz’s enthusiasm and stubbornness. We deal with constant attempts to solve the problem of creation in regional style. The situation described allows for the statement that there are two forms of regionalism: one on a narrow, territorial and second on the all-Polish scale. No doubt, “the Zakopane style” was the territorial regionalism, and the manorial architecture-the all-Polish one. The condition and quantity of traditional forms are really varied in Poland. For these still existing objects to serve as “model” and inspiration, they have to be examined, classified and made accessible to the designers. The next step is to extract the most distinct features of sub-regions and to popularize the knowledge of these problems. At the Faculty of Architecture of Bialystok Technical University the relative data base concerning the regional architecture is being created on the basis of Microsoft’s ACCESS. It is still another attempt to preserve and uphold the cultural landscape of Poland.

summary In 1976 Richard Foqué established periods in the development of methods of designing. The first stage (the 50's and early 60's) - automatization of the designing process - properly identified language of description that is understood by a machine is vital. Christopher Alexander publishes 'Pattern Language'. The second stage (late 60's) - the use of the Arts - research techniques as interview, questionnaire, active observation; ergonomic aspects are also taken into consideration. The third stage (starts at the turn of the 60's and 70's) - co-participation of all of the parties involved in the designing process, and especially the user. The designing process becomes more complex but at the same time more intelligible to a non-professional - Alexander's 'Pattern Language' returns. It's been over 20 years now since the publication of this work. In the mid 70's prototypes of integrate building description are created. We are dealing now with the next stage of the designing methods development. Unquestionable progress of computer optimalization of technical and economical solutions has taken place. It's being forecasted that the next stage would be using computer as a simulator of the designing process. This stage may be combined with the development of AI. (Already in 1950 Alan Turing had formulated the theoretical grounds of Artificial Intelligence.) Can the development of the AI have the influence on the creation of present time regional architecture? Hereby I risk a conclusion that the development of AI can contribute to the creation of modern regional architecture.

summary Research is carried out concerning the use of computer programming techniques for architectural urban design. This research concerns a wide spectrum of tools involving all stages of the design process. Bovill claims that the progression of the perception of detail can be expressed by the use of Box-Counting Dimension. The lack of the needed progression of detail would be expressed by the decrease in the value of the dimension measured. However, doubts appear already at the stage of choosing the objects to be measured, as they are likely to be selected in an arbitrary way. Thus chances are increased for the easy confirmation of the correctness of the results obtained. It remains doubtful, however, whether in the case of a different selection of components measured the results would have been confirmed. The measurements are carried out on the drawings of the facades, or on details. Bovill left unanswered the issue of the “importance” of lines on drawings, i.e. which might, or even should be, left out. He also claims that the siding should not be taken into account during the measurements. This, however, brings the question of which elements of the drawing constitute siding, and which details. Therefore, would the drawings made by two people look identical and yield the same results of the Box-Counting Dimension measurements? By demonstrating diverse examples this paper discusses the possibilities of using Box-Counting Dimension (one of the fractal dimension of Mandelbrot) in design.

summary The processes of collecting, integrating, and representing heterogeneous urban data in Urban Digital Twins (UDTs) pose significant challenges. Besides, the lack of initiators’ knowledge and experience may lead to severe consequences in the implementation, utilization, and maintenance of UDTs. This research identifies the challenges of UDT development in Tallinn, Estonia, and discusses the City of Tallinn’s approaches as a case study. By analyzing the literature, the technical challenges related to the integration of heterogeneous qualitative and quantitative data for creating and updating UDTs (e.g., data collection, modeling, data integration, storage, and maintenance) have been identified, classified, and discussed with relevant officials of the City of Tallinn. Outsourcing data collection, using open-source software, and cloud computing were alternative solutions applied in Tallinn to overcome the challenges. The research concludes that initiators should clarify their objectives, expectations, and resources before developing UDTs to efficiently allocate and manage their technological and human resources to mitigate potential future obstacles.

summary In this paper, we present a kerfing (relief-cutting) method to turn rigid planar surfaces into flexible ones. Our kerfing method is based on a generalization of the 2D meander-pattern recently invented by Dujam Ivaniševiæ. We have developed algorithms to obtain a large subset of all possible 2D meander-patterns with a simple remeshing process. Our algorithm can be applied to any polygonal mesh to produce 2D meander-patterns. The algorithm, when applied to regular (4,4) tiling pattern, in which every face is 4-sided and every vertex is 4-valence, provides the original 2D meander-pattern of Ivaniševiæ. Moreover, since these meander-patterns are obtained by a remeshing algorithm, by changing parameters, we can control local properties of the pattern with intensity of images to obtain desired stiffness in any given region (See Fig.1). This approach provides a simple interface to construct desired patterns.

summary This paper presents landscape as the continuous interface between urban media facades and the ever-expanding use of digital devices and their content. It investigates contemporary attitudes toward digital public spaces, such as mainstream media facades, interactive art installations, and mobile apps. Media-infused landscapes could, if handled properly, transfer the public domain back from corporate ownership to public authorship. This paper discusses examples of public participatory spaces mediated by new technologies and emerging opportunities associated with virtual social networks. The types of interactions and experiences that in the past were predominantly confined to art gallery installations or online chat rooms become main street events with broader participation and authorship. While perceived by some as invasive and overreaching, media participatory landscapes could also help us to reclaim the public realm and democratize its content.

summary Virtual environments, originally seen as less-than-perfect replicas of physical world, acquire their own identity with unique visual and spatial logic. Identity that now starts permeating back into everyday life and informing what is expected or acceptable within physical reality. The distinction between the actual and virtual fades when seen through the screen of a smartphone, experienced through a navigational system of the video game console, or manifested by media rich culture often confusing a product with an image. The paper considers massive multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPG) as the analogy to an urban ritual/happening and places AR in the broader context of the mobility-on-demand culture, location-based and ubiquitous technologies, and the authoring of the public realm. It also explores how we can take an advantage of the urban mobility for crowd sourcing, social networking, and multi-player gaming as well as non-normative use of public spaces.

summary The promising directions in current design practice and teaching relate to creativity with digital tools in the context of building information modelling (BIM), performance analysis, and simulations as well as digital materiality (computational simulations of materials) and dynamics-based behaviour. This line of research combines spatial design with building and material technology in search of effective and effi cient architecture. It reconstitutes questions of what to design by interrelating them with questions of how and why to design. This paper focuses on the appropriation of BIM tools for architectural curriculum teaching, from the design studio to building technology courses. It specifically focuses on BIM-based parametric modeling in discussing construction details, assemblies, and design explorations in the design studio context.

summary A city as defined by aesthetic principles and compositional patterns no longer exists. Form is out and interactions are in. Behavioral patterns stemming from individual preferences redefine what is commonly shared and agreed upon. Now inhabitants not only live in the city; they author it with their daily activities, personal communications, and consumption patterns forming an intangible layer--the invisible city--of interconnected networks, momentary media presence, and human-to-object interactions. This new dimension of the city puts in question past urban theories and organizing principles. This paper looks at the legacy of the past theories as well as new upcoming drives that will define urban frameworks in the future. It specifically identifies the emergence of identities, autonomous agents, and interconnected networks as formative elements of future cities.

summary This paper discusses research into embedded building assemblies with a focus on distributed sensing, real-time building envelope monitoring, and smart material integration. It looks into extending the concept of the Internet of Things from devices and appliances housed within a building to assemblies and a structure itself. The paper presents a number of embedded research prototypes that address thermal and moisture monitoring as well as introduce capacitive sensing as an opportunity for user monitoring and engagement. Finally, the paper points to opportunities for further extending sensing and actuating capabilities of a building envelope by combining them with embedded materials as a form of user interface.

summary This paper presents a curricular model for an integrated design studio focused on BIM-driven processes, satisfying the NAAB 2020's student performance criteria SC.5 and SC6. These criteria emphasize quantifiable, evidence-based design thinking by requiring the provision of "measurable environmental impacts" and "measurable outcomes of building performance." The studio, serving as a capstone project, integrates accessible design, user and regulatory requirements into building assemblies, structural and environmental systems, and life safety, underscoring the importance of measurable building performance outcomes. The adoption of computational design tools, particularly Building Information Modeling (BIM), facilitates engagement in environmental and user-focused simulations and ensures data interoperability throughout the design and post-occupancy phases. Utilizing a comprehensive set of tools, including life-cycle assessment (LCA) and energy modeling, the curriculum advances beyond simple simulations to support decision-making and multi-objective optimizations. This approach enables a new form of design thinking that incorporates a broader set of variables and considerations, encouraging students to meet various environmental impact and performance benchmarks, including LEED v.5 Certification points and Architecture 2030 energy standards. The integration of scenario simulation tools empowers students to autonomously advance their projects within a framework of constraints, marking a pedagogical shift towards faculty acting as learning facilitators and promoting student autonomy in design evaluation.

summary This study describes the development of a learning object to introduce parametric design techniques together with design action. It identifies in Kogan's architecture appropriate design strategies to configure parametric exercises, such as controlling the types of dynamic textures derived from the effects of light and shadows produced by cobogós. An exercise that considers time and movement, references associated with the architect's cinematographic practices. To develop the object, we started with the interpretation of the knowledge structures involved: from knowledge itself (theories and technologies that identify connections between architecture, cinema, and the concept of parametry) to know-how (a visual programming capable of instrumentalizing for the referred control, by means of parametric design techniques). It was about making available and experiencing this structure, in a teaching/learning process, interpreted as a game that allows us to highlight Kogan's purposes in promoting multisensory experiences with the space of architecture.

title Real Space, Digital Perception: Formation of Spatial Experience Beyond Materiality

summary Space is perceived by cognitive operations in which particular elements are assigned spatial significance. Such operations are relatively similar to digitalization processes. An element’s attributes are translated to numerical data according to measuring systems and scales, so that they can be evaluated comparatively. Similarly, elements of the given world are perceptible as sensory stimulations that are registered to the sensory organs and then translated to data, which is comparable to the data of other elements. Sensory stimulators may derive from any element that is registered to the sensory organs, even those which we call as “virtual”, “artificial” and “fake,” for example the elements that are rendered digitally in the computer. With such a premise, the paper examines how such elements may also contribute in the formation of spatial perception. Consequently, the meaning as well as our common interaction with space is contested, along with the limits of reality itself.
