title The Body in the Mind: The Bodily Basis of Meaning, Imagination, and Reason
source University of Chicago Press, Chicago, Illinois
summary This is the first work which systematically put together a sensible story about the intermodal structures (image schemata) linking high-level cognition, like langauge, with the body-rich information of perceptual processing. Johnson's image schemata was the first proposal for this project which was both neurally plausible, given the organization of the cortex into topology preserving maps (contradicting Fodor and Pylshyn's mistaken view), and supported by the evidence from development, in language and conceptual structure. This book spawned debates on schematization in fields ranging from developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, linguistics, philosophy, neurocomputational modeling, and neuroscience. When the st century cognitive neuroscience writes its chapter on the way semantic processing works at a neural level, it will need to refute those 20th century philosophers of language who thought that language was primarily referential, truth-conditional, and operated on symbols formed independently of bodily perception. This book will be the touchstone for that project.

title Bridging the paper and electronic worlds: the paper user interface
source Proc. of INTERCHI '93, ACM Press, pp. 507-512
summary Since its invention millenia ago, paper has served as one of our primary communications media. Its inherent physical properties make it easy to use, transport, and store, and cheap to manufacture. Despite these advantages, paper remains a second class citizen in the electronic world In this paper, we present a new technology for bridging the paper and the electronic worlds. In the new technology, the user interface moves beyond the workstation and onto paper itself. We describe paper user interface technology and its, implementation in a particular system called XAX.

title Binary Oppositions: Should Buildings Designed with a Computer “Look Like” They Were Designed with a Computer?
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.acadia.2000.019.3
source ACADIA Quarterly, vol. 19, no. 1, pp. 19-21
summary This article marks the trial introduction of what I hope will become a regular feature in the ACADIA Quarterly, a forum for the debate of opposing viewpoints on various CAD issues. In each issue, I intend to present a controversial, CADrelated topic, and argue it, pro and con, with another ACADIAn. It is my hope that the discussions in this article will cause us all to form knowledgeable opinions on subjects we hadn’t previously considered, examine our views on debatable subjects more critically, make us better informed about differing viewpoints, and perhaps even change a few minds.

title Mental Models
source Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press
summary As psychological representations of real, hypothetical, or imaginary situations, mental models were first postulated by the Scottish psychologist Kenneth Craik (1943), who wrote that the mind constructs "small-scale models" of reality to anticipate events, to reason, and to underlie . The models are constructed in working memory as a result of perception, the comprehension of discourse, or imagination (see 1982; Johnson-Laird 1983). A crucial feature is that their structure corresponds to the structure of what they represent. Mental models are accordingly akin to architects' models of buildings and to chemists' models of complex molecules.

summary The goal of the presented research is to explore human-machine interaction and to study how Augmented Reality (AR) may be a potential tool to inform Architectural Rehabilitation and Conservation processes. Nowadays obtaining data to inform both marchitecture projects and real estate investments is a very bureaucratic process. City councils technicians suffers from the same diffi culties when are in fi eldwork to do inspections and lack a complete sort of information. This proposal considers that the use of mobile technologies as smart phones and tablets can empower these technicians to obtain building related data. The specifi c goal of the study aims to develop a data model and an interface that can be made available to professionals which allows an efficiently reply to the user’s needs as the system enables the gathering of updated information considering a particular building.

title Exploring motion sequence of virtual characters: Experimenting motion-capture variables
source Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Geometric Modelling and Imaging (GMAI 07), ETH Zurich, Switzerland, 4-6 July, 91-96.
summary The purpose of the research is to study the detail of motion of various subjects with differences in physical attributes. The research outlines how different physique produces different behavioural patterns based upon mass and proportion. This research focuses on ‘walk motion’ to identify the differences in each subject’s physical attributes by sampling subjects of physical differences. This experiment employs Vicon8i® Optical Motion Capture system (MOCAP) to study the detail of human motion by extracting the subjects’ core motions for analysis with pre-defined actions. The research used the findings to establish the relationship between height and weight against motion frequencies in 3D space.

title The Management of CADD Systems in the AEC Office
source 1985. [17] p
summary A well known A/E firm purchased a CAAD system two years ago. They report great success and satisfaction. Their staff is enthused and more importantly so are their clients. Other firms watched them, and after six months one of their competitors purchased the identical CADD system. But that's where the similarities end. At the second firm, the system is under-utilized, management and staff appear to regret their decision and there has been little impact on the firm's work, its profitability and its clients. Identical systems installed in very similar firms with totally different results. What's the difference? MANAGEMENT...Even with the brief history of CADD in the AEC office we can see that the success or failure of CADD system implementation is more likely traced to the effectiveness of management than accuracy of system selection. The information conveyed in this paper is directed at new and experienced planners and managers of turnkey CADD systems in AEC or facilities management environments. With a focus on real solutions to real problems, it addresses some of the critical issues that will help you successfully plan and implements your own CADD system

title La representación gráfica de las ciudades del pasado [Graphical Representation of Past Cities]
source SIGraDi 2004 - [Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Porte Alegre - Brasil 10-12 november 2004
summary Digital modelling techniques allow for representations of reality. In the same time, evolutions in computing allow present personal computers to handle digital representations of whole historic cities. We need to assess the nature of operating restriction so that the result obtained can be used as a scientific product, while still of a size compatible with current devices. possibilities. Concepts such as urban spatial perception, fidelity to historic research sources, and urban theory applied to uncertainty, will underpin hypothesis for the virtual renaissance of cities of our past. We present a digital model of Granada (Spain), based on a morphological hypothesis of the XIX century. It is based on specific theories to achieve typological models of buildings which original morphology is uncertain and on techniques for the geometrical optimisation and creation of scenes. The paper also presents the sources used, e.g. romantic travellers drawings, historic local maps, old photographs, engravings, literary descriptions.

title Composing musical geometry with sonic objects
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2014.2.195
source Thompson, Emine Mine (ed.), Fusion - Proceedings of the 32nd eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, Department of Architecture and Built Environment, Faculty of Engineering and Environment, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, UK, 10-12 September 2014, pp. 195-203
summary This article relates an experiment linking two types of forms: geometric forms generated from algorithms by mathematical functions and sonic forms generated from algorithms and linked to the first. In order to formalize a graphical and musical object called “sonic object" were used the following tools: the environment of a graphic program, the C# language and the Midi-dot-Net musical library. Diverse equations are used to generate the geometric shapes which generate periodical, cyclical and circular movements. Other equations used in the experiment are formulas adapted from the Edward Lorenz's Strange Attractor. Current research into the problem of the generation of patterns of movement, such as that of Jules Moloney, and research which deals with algorithms which generate shapes, such as that of Robert Krawczyk, have been taken as references and parameters for comparison for this work..

title An Introduction to Display Editing with VI
source September, 1980. 30 p
summary VI (Visual) is a display oriented interactive text editor. When using VI the screen of the terminal acts as a window into the file which is being editing. Changes which made to the file are reflected in what is seen. Using VI the user can insert new text any place in the file quite easily. Most of the commands to VI move the cursor around in the file. There are commands to move the cursor forward and backward in units of characters, words, sentences and paragraphs. A small set of operators, like d for delete and c for change, are combined with the motion commands to form operations such as delete word or change paragraph, in a simple and natural way. This regularity and the mnemonic assignment of commands to keys makes the editor command set easy to remember and to use. VI works on a large number of display terminals, and new terminals are easily driven after editing a terminal description file. While it is advantageous to have an intelligent terminal which can locally insert and delete lines and characters from the display, the editor will function quite well on dumb terminals over slow phone lines. The editor makes allowances for the low bandwidth in these situations and uses smaller window sizes and different display updating algorithms to make best use of the limited speed available. It is also possible to use the command set of VI on hardcopy terminals, storage tubes and 'glass ty's' using a one line editing window; thus VI's command set is available on all terminals. The full command set of the more traditional, line oriented editor ED is available within VI; it is quite simple to switch between the two modes of editing

source T. Tidafi and T. Dorta (eds) Joining Languages, Cultures and Visions: CAADFutures 2009, PUM, 2009, pp. 443-457
summary This study is interested in the attribution of technological properties to geometrical elements in a 3D architectural modeler. We propose an original method based on the principle of semantic groupings of faces by geometrical requests. We describe the method and the results of interviews led with architects to identify the relevant groupings, then we list the simple geometrical requests developed within the modeler for the selection of these groupings and we report the efficiency of the method on a case. We conclude by the benefits and limits of our method.

title The Vega Platform - IT for the Virtual Enterprise
source CAAD Futures 1997 [Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-7923-4726-9] München (Germany), 4-6 August 1997, pp. 591-616
summary One of todays many buzzwords is 'virtual enterprise'. The objectives of the ESPRIT project VEGA are the development of an IT platform enabling such enterprises. Virtual enterprise means a number of people or smaller companies grouped together for a distinct contract, which none of them alone could or would able to get and to undertake. Modern decentralized, distributed IT solutions typically could support such virtual enterprises in their competition against those who are big or strong enough to to carry out such contracts with their internal resources alone. VEGA gathers together the necessary components as technically available and extends their capabilities as needed for a platform enabling collaboration in an flexible and distributed environment.
