summary This paper examines the existing training gaps between the traditional teaching process of the Architectural Design Studio (ADS) and the new contemporary training scenarios through the perception of the ePortfolio’s use, which allows it to visualize guidelines for updating its teaching and learning process. The study is qualitative with an applied approach, based on a perception survey answered by students who attended the P2 workshop, between 2012 – 2018, in the Architecture Career of Concepción University, Chile. The results show the existence of training gaps associated with factors of conception, planning and development of pedagogical strategies of the training process. The conclusions allow us to observe opportunities for updating the teaching process of the ADS through the mediation of technological tools, which help to build a new pedagogical conception, more adjusted to the current and future scenarios of modernity.

summary This paper shows and describes the experience of the ePortfolio implementation in architectural training for promoting Networked Learning (NL). The aim was to analyze the potential of ePortfolio, as a techno-pedagogical strategy to develop and enhance connections and learning integrations among students who belong in the second year of the Architectural Design Studio. The research had a descriptive methodology with a mixed approach over fourteen cohorts of the same training cycle across the years 2012 to 2018, considering a total of 336 students. The results reveal that ePortfolio, conceived inside the techno-pedagogical model, articulates a set of learning connections between students and learning situations and promotes the construction of an active collaboration net, which evidence NL development in the formative process.

title Design-Based on VR-Modeling of Environemntal Conditions

summary The research on CAD has been looking for a long time a creative contribution to architectural design, including recently the use of virtual-reality as an immersive modeling system, but without much practical results. However, contemporary architecture is increasingly including digital characteristics based more on cultural influences than on the use of electronic tools. This shows an evolution of the discipline in relation to digital media and apparently distant from environmental concerns. But the works and reflexions reveal a common convergence in the role of body in architecture as a pivot between virtual and local dimension of design. Based on that relationship we propose to take advantage of virtual-reality for modeling environmental conditions of the location in order to guide architectural design, using for example the potential of representing characteristics not visible in reality or to simulate time cycles. Sun displacement, wind direction, temperature ranges, topography and landscape are specific conditions in design that define energy consumption and human comfort. Such characteristics can establish optimal shapes crossing the different variables with timelines. VR-modeling and interactive control allow an spatial evaluation of environmentally efficient forms. That is showed through an exercise of housing in different locations of Chile. This merger between digital media and ecological concerns represents a crossing of contemporary cultural trends to motivate exploration of new geometries, supported on the potential of technology and on sustainable human development

summary In 2001, discussions began on the elaboration of a new Pedagogical Project (PPC) for the School of Architecture and Urbanism (CAU) of the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), but only in 2010 a proposal was presented utilizing new didactic-pedagogical concepts and dynamics. After eight years of its implementation, and without a formal evaluation, it was verified the lack of a methodology that manages the teaching process according to the principles formulated in the PPC2010. This article consists of the analysis of the teaching of the CAU /UFPE design process. It also contains a proposal`s presentation to update the curricular structure through the meta-methodology of Geodesign. The proposal strives for a better flow of information, integration and contextualization of contents.

This study intends to contribute to the establishment of reference for the construction of a new paradigm concerning the methodology for teaching of projects that are supported by free platforms. This research attempts to identify opportunities for simulation, interaction and collaboration that are provided by free platforms. The analysis of the results indicates that the possibility of interaction, collaboration and simulation that ICTs offer act as a support for the methodology of teaching/learning projects.

summary The aim of this research was to investigate the relationship between the object-oriented paradigm and the design process in architecture. The work was inspired by Mitchell´s (1990) comparison between architectural types and classes of objects. An analogy was set between the development of classes and the structuring of design problems based on architectural typologies. The method was then compared to Alexander´s (1964) in terms of levels of abstraction. Two classes were implemented, illustrating the application of the object-oriented paradigm in architectural design. The method developed is expected to help architects develop a new understanding of the design process.

title Generating floor plans with deep learning: A cross-validation assessment over different dataset sizes

summary The advent of deep learning has enabled a series of opportunities; one of them is the ability to tackle subjective factors on the floor plan design and make predictions though spatial semantic maps. Nonetheless, the amount available of data grows exponentially on a daily basis, in this sense, this research seeks to investigate deep generative methods of floor plan design and its relationship between data volume, with training time, quality and diversity in the outputs; in other words, what is the amount of data required to rapidly train models that return optimal results. In our research, we used a variation of the Conditional Generative Adversarial Network algorithm, that is, Pix2pix, and a dataset of approximately 80 thousand images to train 10 models and evaluate their performance through a series of computational metrics. The results show that the potential of this data-driven method depends not only on the diversity of the training set but also on the linearity of the distribution; therefore, high-dimensional datasets did not achieve good results. It is also concluded that models trained on small sets of data (800 images) may return excellent results if given the correct training instructions (Hyperparameters), but the best baseline to this generative task is in the mid-term, using around 20 to 30 thousand images with a linear distribution. Finally, it is presented standard guidelines for dataset design, and the impact of data curation along the entire process

summary Due to the more significant architectural complexity, it is helpful to include structural analysis studies in the early design stages. An architectural team typically carries out the structural grid fit in this phase. This limitation may lead to the structural distribution in the initial phase not being the most appropriate. This work aims to provide a tool for architects oriented design by optimising the cost of the structure, making an initial layout for residential buildings with the regular shape of steel structures using the generative design, which allows the creation of structural BIM models that comply with the requirements of stability and resistance for gravity design specified in the American code ASCE 360 as starting point on the conceptual design. The paper describes the computational design development for the structural building grid using multi-criteria optimisation solved by a genetic algorithm.

summary This paper introduces a computational framework that fosters collaboration between architects, engineers, and contractors by bridging the gap between architectural design, structural analysis, and digital construction. The present research is oriented toward the formulation of an automatic design-to-construction pipeline for Integrally-Attached Timber Plate Structures (IATPS). This construction system is based on assembling timber panels through the sole interlocking of wood-wood connections inspired by traditional Japanese joinery. Prior research focused on developing distinct computational workflows and dealt with the automation of 3D modelling, numerical simulation, fabrication, and assembly separately. In the current study, a single and interactive design tool is presented. Its versatility is demonstrated through two case studies, as well as the assembly of a physical prototype with a robotic arm. Results indicate that efficiency in terms of data flow and stakeholder synergy is considerably increased. The proposed approach contributes to the†Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 by facilitating the collaborative design of sustainable timber structures. Besides, the research also contributes to SDG 9 as it paves the way for sustainable industrialisation of the timber construction sector through streamlined digital fabrication and robotic assembly processes. This reduces manufacturing time and associated costs while leveraging richer design possibilities.

summary This paper evaluates, along with expert assessment, the novel, evolving and creative instruments employed for a digital design process. Applications within this paper derive outputs which are attention-grabbing. These include Agent Simulations, Artistic Image Processing, Realistic Site Geometry, Projected 3D Space Sketching, Immersive 3D Space Sketching, Rhinoceros3D, Grasshopper3D, Fuzor, and Immersive Virtual Reality Presentation. The expert evaluations conclude that all design instruments and methodologies implemented within the digital design ecology work together well for educational purposes. Within the professional practice, however, the various tools could be implemented seamlessly; whereas some of them would not suit the industry from a time-cost perspective. Throughout this paper reason and insight becomes explained and is clear as to why various applications should be selected within various modes of operandi for design processes.

summary Transitioning away from traditional design methodology, for example, paper sketching, CAAD works, and 'flat screen' rendering, this paper proposes a new methodological ecosystem of which tests its validity within a studio-based case study. The focus will prove whether dynamic implementation and interconnectivity of evolving design tools can create richness and complexity of a design outcome through arbitrary phases of a generative design methodology ecosystem. Processes tested include combinations of agent simulations, artistic image processing analysis, site photogrammetry, 3D immersive sketching both abstract and to site-scale, parametric design generation, and virtual reality style presentations. Enhancing the process of design with evolving techniques in a generative way which dynamically interconnects will stimulate a digital culture of design generation that includes new aspects of interest and introduces innovative opportunities within all corners of the architectural realm. Methodology components within this ecosystem of interaction prove that the architecture cannot be as rich and complex without the utilisation of all strengths within each unique design tool.

summary The development of new shapes in architecture has deeply influenced the current perception of the built environment. The analysis of the processes behind this evolution is, therefore, of great interest. At least two well known factors, influencing this development, may be pointed out: the great improvement of digital tools and the tendency toward building distinctiveness.In particular, the innovation of digital tools such as parametric modeling is resulting in an overall diffusion of complex shapes, and the phenomenon is also evident in a clear expressionistic search for architectural singularity, that some might consider as a negative effect of globalization trends.Though, if we can consider as a positive result the fact that parameterization allows a deeper control over design factors in terms of reference to cultural, historical and physical context, at the same time such control possibilities are sometimes so stark to be even auto-referential, stepping over site-specific parameterization, to create unusual shapes just for the sake of complexity.The ever-growing diffusion of generative design processes is in fact going to transform niche procedures, frequently limited to temporary decontextualized structures, into an architectural complexification as an end in itself.The hypothesis of this paper is to demonstrate that site-specific parametrization can be considered as a tool able to translate intentions into shape; it is necessary, for this aim, the widening of the meaning of the word singularity.

summary This paper investigates some possibilities of interactive design in architectural practices and presents an experiment using tools for increasing dialog with people connected to the project. The building is an Art Institute in a small city of 15,000 inhabitants at Minas Gerais State, Brazil, At first, the article describes the creation of the Institute, and the important role of the architect as someone who articulates different instances in the design process, and not just the design of the object. Then, this interactive design process is described and analysed, and some differences between "Participative Design" and "Interactive Design" are emphasized. The article concludes with a discussion about the change of architect's role, changing from "designer of products" to "designer of architectural interfaces".

summary In order to directly make insightful which implications follow from structural design changes and to be able to adapt a structural design quickly to geometrical design changes made by the architect, the structural engineer may embed a parametric and associative design approach in the structural design process. This approach focuses on parametric modelling and the development of parametric tools which serve specific needs in the structural design process, allowing designers for instance to quickly communicate and discuss alternatives or to inform design team members of structural results of changing design parameters. The paper presents multiple projects within these categories of parametric approaches. They are concentrated on design and analysis with the goal of presenting practical examples of these approaches in structural design which were integrated in the full design process in order to benefit from the qualities of a multi-disciplinary parametric and associative design process.

summary This paper is a study of an ongoing housing project in Brussels (SMH) which involves bottom-up spatial occupation and 'making' by activists, activist architects, social workers and citizens. The particular focus of this paper is on the critical spatial agency of the citizens, activist-architects and artefacts for enabling architectural design justice (ADJ) in the SMH. Building on the Actor-Network Theory of Latour (2005) we developed an analytic method called Actor Link Mapping and Analysis (ALMA) which involves data collection from a wide range of network actors, the generation of a variety of digital network maps, making computational analysis, followed by workshops and interviews to discuss the findings. ALMA was used to recognize potential assets which are essential for design justice practices and networks. The analysis revealed the limits to community control of design processes and practices as well as limits to the conceptual links surrounding socio-spatial equality, thus limits to design justice in the SMH project. Our research also revealed a plethora of new roles and agencies in bottom-up housing production which were essential to understanding the dynamics and power distribution among the different actors.

title Models of the design process: integrating across the disciplines

summary Models of the design process in engineering have converged to a consensus, represented for example by the VDI model. However, after starting from common origins, models of the design process in architectural and industrial design have diverged from the engineering consensus, in response to criticisms from both theorists and practitioners. There now appear to be significant differences between the engineering and architectural/industrial design models. Criticisms of the consensus model of engineering design have also been made, in part reflecting the earlier criticisms of architectural and industrial design models. We discuss the similarities and differences between the two consensus models -- in engineering and architectural/industrial design -- and identify prescriptive versus descriptive emphases. We suggest that attempts should be made to re-integrate the two consensus models, in order to improve education and practice across the disciplines.

title Evolving designs by generating useful complex gene structures

summary This chapter presents two examples of work for evolving designs by generating useful complex gene structures. where the first example uses a genetic engineering approach whereas the other uses a growth model of form. Both examples have as their motivation to overcome the combinatorial effect of large design spaces by focussing the search in useful areas. This focussing is achieved by starting with design spaces defined by low-level basic genes and creating design spaces defined by increasingly more complex gene structures. In both cases the low-level basic genes represent simple design actions which when executed produce parts of design solutions. Both works are exemplified in the domain of architectural floor plans.
