title Aalto on the Internet: architectural analysis and concept representation with computer media
source Automation in Construction 10 (5) (2001) pp. 561-575
summary This paper describes a teaching project, carried out in the postgraduate program of the ETH in Zurich, whose goal was to apply multimedia, Internet-based technology to a study of the work of the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. The goal of the course was twofold: to learn about the architecture of Aalto while teaching students to design a web site, using dynamic pages and databases. The outcome of the course was a web site in which the work of Aalto is represented in three distinctive contexts: descriptive, analytical and associative. The rich network of connections within and between the different contexts allows the visitor of the site to gain new insights on the work of Aalto in a truly interactive way.

title From Sketches to Computer Images: A Strategy for the Application of Computers in Architectural Design
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.1992.331
source CAAD Instruction: The New Teaching of an Architect? [eCAADe Conference Proceedings] Barcelona (Spain) 12-14 November 1992, pp. 331-350
summary The use of computer tools in architectural practice has been steadily increasing in recent years. Many architectural offices are already using computer tools, mostly for production tasks. Hardly any design is being done with the computer. With the new computer tools, architects are confronted with the challenge to use computers to express their design ideas right from conception.

This paper describes a project made for a competition which recently took place in Spain. Sketches and computer models were the only tools used in designing this project. A variety of computer tools were used in different stages of this project: two dimensional drawing tools were used in the early stages, then a three-dimensional modeling program for the development of the design and for the production of final drawings, and a rendering program for final presentation images.

title Design as Formal Language
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.1992.319
source CAAD Instruction: The New Teaching of an Architect? [eCAADe Conference Proceedings] Barcelona (Spain) 12-14 November 1992, pp. 319-330
summary Geometry and language are disciplines with which architecture holds a strong relationship. They have highly structured natures, which make them well-suited for computer implementation. Architecture, on the other hand, lacks such an abstract and hierarchical system. This is one of the main obstacles to the integration of computers in architecture at this point. This paper presents the results of a pedagogic approach based on the association of language, geometry and computers. This association can be successfully used in the education of basic design principles that, although not directly related with architecture, are fundamental to the education of an architect.

source Digital Design Studios: Do Computers Make a Difference? [ACADIA Conference Proceedings / ISBN 1-880250-07-1] Québec City (Canada) October 22-25, 1998, pp. 44-57
summary More often than not, discussions taking place in specialised conferences dealing with computers and design tend to focus mostly on the tool itself. What the computer can do that other tools cannot, how computers might improve design and whether a new aesthetic would result from the computer; these are among the most recurrent issues addressed in those forums. But, by placing the instrument at the center of the debate, we might be distorting the nature of design. In the course KEYWORDS, carried out in the years 1992 and 1993 at the ETH Zurich, the goal was to transcend the discourses that concentrate on the computer, integrating it in a wider theoretical framework including principles of modern art and architecture. This paper presents a summary of the content and results of this course.

source Thompson, Emine Mine (ed.), Fusion - Proceedings of the 32nd eCAADe Conference - Volume 1, Department of Architecture and Built Environment, Faculty of Engineering and Environment, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, UK, 10-12 September 2014, pp. 297-302
summary This paper explores the application of cellular automata as method for investigating the dynamic parameters and interrelationships that constitute the urban space. With increasing aspects needed for integration during the architectural and urban design process with the relations between these aspects growing in parallel, complexity of the design process and design solution increases. Additionally, aspects and relations are of a transformative character in that they change over time and therefore construct a time-based condition for which problems are presented and solutions are sought. An architectural methodological response to this situation is presented through the development of a conceptual computational design system that allows these dynamics to unfold and to be observed for architectural design decision taking. Reflecting on the development and implementation of a cellular automata based design approach on a master level urban design studio this paper will discuss the strategies for dealing with complexity at an urban scale as well as the pedagogical considerations behind applying computational tools and methods to a urban design education.

title Optimizing Tensile Membrane Architecture for Energy Harvesting
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2020.1.569
source D. Holzer, W. Nakapan, A. Globa, I. Koh (eds.), RE: Anthropocene, Design in the Age of Humans - Proceedings of the 25th CAADRIA Conference - Volume 1, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, 5-6 August 2020, pp. 569-578
summary This paper identifies the correlation between the stiffness of a tensile membrane and wind-induced vibration. Here, a means by which to optimize the tensile membrane architecture and a harvester for the collection of energy from wind-induced vibration is proposed. Because its material property, the tensile membrane architecture is suitable for harvesting energy. While high stiffness is desired to ensure the stability of the tensile membrane architecture, the stiffness is negatively correlated with the energy collection. Thus, optimization considering the stiffness and the amount of harvestable energy in tensile membrane structures is conducted, broken down into the following tasks: 1) investigate the energy generator on the tensile membrane to combine a membrane type of architecture and wind energy harvesting; 2) set-up the computational environment with which to analyze the energy efficiency of the tensile membrane architecture; 3) visualize the resulting datasets to determine the relationship between the stiffness and the energy efficiency; and 4) define optimized tensile membrane architectures.

title Data-Driven Analysis of Spatial Patterns through Large-Scale Datasets of Building Floor Plan
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2021.1.301

summary This paper introduces a unique quantitative analysis method and results that are differentiated from those in existing studies. We analyzed five types of information in floor plan images: the silhouette, number of rooms, room area, and direct and indirect room connectivity. Furthermore, the analysis used a large-scale apartment unit dataset consisting of 33,892 units. We present convincing and objective spatial pattern analysis results of Korean apartments by quantitatively analyzing a large-scale dataset. It is expected that the analysis results will clarify the characteristics of the residential environment of Korean apartments. The results suggest that changes in lifestyles lead to the modularization of bedrooms, increased numbers of private bathrooms and balconies with corridors as junctions, and the diversification of room layouts.

title The Reduction of CO2 With the Help of Vegetation to Improve the Air Quality of Workrooms
source García Amen, F, Goni Fitipaldo, A L and Armagno Gentile, Á (eds.), Accelerated Landscapes - Proceedings of the XXVII International Conference of the Ibero-American Society of Digital Graphics (SIGraDi 2023), Punta del Este, Maldonado, Uruguay, 29 November - 1 December 2023, pp. 1299–1310
summary This article presents a study that addresses the importance of indoor air quality. The research aimed to understand how the use of specific plants can enhance air quality in work environments. The methodology involves a prototype with two sensors to measure CO2 concentration in a space without natural and mechanical ventilation, considering the use of plants for air purification. The results demonstrate the variation in CO2 levels with and without the presence of plants and occupants. While a reduction in CO2 levels was observed with the use of plants, under high occupancy, the vegetation wasn't sufficient to maintain recommended levels. The conclusion emphasizes the need for sensor calibration, as well as the proportional relationship between CO2 accumulation in the environment and the quantity of plants required to uphold air quality.
