summary An approach for a graphical CAD system that is capable of representing physical and geometric aspects of a design using high-level constraints (HLCs) is presented. A prototype spatial planning system incorporating constraints is used in an interactive manner to refine designs by following an iterative approach which uses visual information to evaluate the design at each stage of iteration. High-level constraints aid this iterative approach by influencing (or constraining) the behavior of objects as they are interactively manipulated during the design stage of problem solving. High-level constraints also define the scaling properties of objects which are useful during the construction stage of problem solving. This system and its implications for the design of CAD systems incorporating HLCs are discussed.

title Using high-level constraints to aid space planning applications in computer-aided design

summary This thesis describes a system that aids in solving space planning and layout design problems through an innovative use of constraints. Space planning problem solving is aided by constrained manipulation, a trial-and-error approach, and modelling the scaling properties of objects. Constraints are used to model various physical properties of solid objects (including gravity and friction) and to control the way in which objects scale. The system runs on a Silicon Graphics workstation supporting interactive, real-time, 3-dimensional graphics that aid in visualizing designs. The problems handled by our prototype are restricted to objects representable with rectangular solids oriented along the cartesian axes. This system was used by designers and novice computer users to solve a studio layout problem. Constraints were found to aid in the manipulation of objects by providing predictable behaviour for objects. The test results indicate that subjects learn the behaviour of objects easily and use this information in useful ways. In addition, there are indications that constraints can reduce users' cognitive loads at the user interface level. The coupling of constraints with the interactive, 3-dimensional aspect of the system encourages the use of the system at earlier stages of the design process than simple geometric drafting systems. From the experience with the project, the paper also aims to discuss databases, in particular those representing cultural objects, as expressive forms, and some of their expressive mechanisms.

summary This article describes a study on the 1930 Extension – Remodeling – Beautification Plan of the city of Rio de Janeiro, elaborated by Alfred Agache but only partially built, and its influences on the city. The research is divided in two stages: the first comprises the examination of primary and secondary sources in order to obtain a better understanding of the Plan, including the geolocation of the information gathered; the second involves the elaboration of this information in a 3D model and its visualization in two different Augmented Reality systems for public consultation by students and researchers.

summary This paper examines the potential of Virtual Reality (VR) technologies for architectural applications. There has been a great deal of anticipation for its implications for architecture since Ivan Sutherland's first VR system in the 60's. The term VR was formalized and became popular in the main stream in the late 80's and became an industry by the late 90's. Although it has found good applications in Medicine, Flight Simulation, and Video Game Industry, its effect on architecture remains imperceptible. In the work that we review, we found that the success of VR in architecture has primarily been in the passive and exploratory applications. We also note that at the present time, the cost of VR systems is directly proportionate to the level of photorealism and immersion. We contend that photorealistic visualization and total immersion are not absolute prerequisites for making most design decisions. Hence, through this paper we bring to light the inherent promise of VR technology and the potential impact it could have with its current limitations, on the way we conventionally think and design our built environment pushing it beyond space and time constraints.

title Observations on daylighting as demonstrated by the work of Alvar Aalto

summary Daylight plays a dominant role in the works of Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. This thesis project investigates the role played by the natural light in his architectural works. One of the major concerns of this paper is to discover his intent behind the use of daylight, as well as to identify some of the techniques he devised to handle daylight. Literature research and physical model simulation studies have been incorporated as a method for the study. Significant works of Aalto have been surveyed. It has been observed that the use of daylight has been one of the preoccupations of Aalto since the design of Viipuri Library and Paimio Sanatorium. It was also observed that skylights play a prominent role in Aalto's architecture and that they are well developed and sophisticated devices. Some of the technical components and contributing factors of Aalto's skylights have been identified. Three case-studies were conducted through literature research and simulations. It was concluded that Aalto treats daylighting as one of the elements to embody sufficient psychological factors in man's built environment. It was discovered that the selection and the detailing of the skylights in each case has been predominantly guided by the climate, function, personal relationships, and the visual task of the individual space. Physical model simulations proved to be extremely helpful in understanding the modeling of the daylight and the spatial quality.

summary This paper is organized into two parts. The first part is a commentary on the state of CAAD in response to the three very important pedagogical issues raised by Klerker in the conference theme narrative. The second part presents an introductory course developed and taught by the author that is based on a very simple premise; until intelligent CAAD (Computer Aided Architectural Design) programs become available, use what is available intelligently. The pedagogical model employed is explained. Some of the work done by the students of this course is included. The impact of this course on the curriculum in the school, the marketability of our students, and our future plans are summarized in the concluding remarks.

summary This paper presents an approach to developing the computer aided architectural design systems investigating architectural semantics paradigm and void modeling representation as a method. A prototypical system called FRED(Facile Roof Editor & Designer) was developed incorporating structural logic and characteristics of roof in its basic representation and its operational behavior constrained by distinct attributes of a roof. Design of Hip, Pitch, Multi-level, and Flat roofs in Solid and Shell forms was made possible by extracting from an existing building or creating them as independent entities. The implementation successfully demonstrates that incorporating architectural semantics in the basic representation of a CAD system allows architects to create and test roof morphology fairly quickly, accurately, and fluidity for ideation.

summary Accuracy and facility for iterative exploration are two of the most appealing promises of computer use in architectural design. In this paper, we discuss daylighting visualization, a very important aspect of the architectural design process, where computers do not yet fulfill these promises. We initiated a project to understand the reasons for this and to develop methods to deal with it in architectural design education. We report our work in progress, which combines creative thinking with scientific procedures to resolve the bottlenecks in computer graphics technologies making them suitable for design exploration. Our strategy seeks to fill the gaps in the science of photo realistic visualization with time tested physical modeling techniques. We present some of our student work based on this strategy.

summary This paper reflects on the experiences of teaching undergraduate design studios for past 4 years and presents a systematic investigation conducted in a classroom setting to further understand the role of computer in conceptual stages of design. A case study project inquiring the implications of using two different forms of media, namely cardboard and computer, for design development during conceptual stages is presented. Twelve novice designers were challenged to learn and use computers in a five-week design project. A conceptual framework for understanding the discovery and usefulness of computer in their design process was developed and tested. An analysis of the outcome indicated that computers played a positive role in student innovation, improving possibilities for discovery. It further revealed that the employing cardboard was useful in turning the abstract discoveries made by the computers into productive and useful design solutions. It also supported the notion that the novice designer’s use of photorealistic possibilities offered by computer visualization (rendering, animation) during conceptual stages of design had an effect of distraction rather than a design aid.

title Making Ripples: Rethinking pedagogy in the digital age

summary This essay presents a pedagogical model for beginning design that introduces digital fabrication methods through an integrated learning framework. Ripples - a wall sculpture made collectively by all second year architecture and interior design students as a joint project between studio, graphics and shop—exemplifies design practice as a collective activity. In this example, solutions emerge out of interactions among multiple stakeholders through iterative experimentation and optimization. The goal of this essay is to provoke a rethinking of the status-quo pedagogical practices in order to incorporate digital fabrication within existing curricular structures as a core skill for beginning design students, rather than merely as a technology course elected by a few students. Conclusions suggest the relevance to broader contexts of lessons learned from this modest experiment.

summary The performance of an architectural object is highly difficult to both define and measure in its complexity since it is integrating a constantly increasing amount of information, from concrete measurable characteristics to the subjective perception of individual users. The question arising though is how to predict the performance of a building and influence the design in order to increase it according to a significantly high number of criteria.The presented paper proposes two design tools, both developed and programmed in rhino python for the generation of freeform geometries. The tools are generated for specific tasks, but may be interpreted as exemplary for a way of defining and structuring a design program in order to increase its efficiency. Both tools rely on a computational core that is generally defined and may be fed with as many and different constraints and criteria as considered suitable for the defined task.

summary The paper investigates and assesses different room acoustics software and the opportunities they offer to engage in parametric acoustics workflow and to influence architectural designs. The first step consists in the testing and benchmarking of different tools on the basis of accuracy, speed and interoperability with Grasshopper 3d. The focus will be placed to the benchmarking of three different acoustic analysis tools based on raytracing. To compare the accuracy and speed of the acoustic evaluation across different tools, a homogeneous set of acoustic parameters is chosen. The room acoustics parameters included in the set are reverberation time (EDT, RT30), clarity (C50), loudness (G), and definition (D50). Scenarios are discussed for determining at different design stages the most suitable acoustic tool. Those scenarios are characterized, by the use of less accurate but fast evaluation tools to be used in early design stages, or by more accurate but slower tools for later-stage design stage detailing and delivery phases.

summary Purpose of this paper is to present the first promising results of an ongoing research program that is part of a larger multi-year project carried out by the Computer Aided Design Research Group (GRCAO) of the UniversitÈ de MontrÈal, in order to define new methods of archaeological restitution using computer-aided means. This novel approach involves a redefinition of surveying techniques, data processing and knowledge-based thinking in disciplines such as epigraphy and architecture. As its chosen field of investigation, the GRCAO is using the Egyptian temple of Karnak, a monument on the UNESCO World Heritage list that is of considerable historical importance. This impressive archaeological site serves as an excellent case study and testing ground for the project, since it underwent tremendous and complex architectural transformations in the course of its two thousand year-long history.

summary This research investigates a tunable cellular material system that can alternate between a thermal insulator and a heat exchanger. The capability to morph between these two distinctive thermal functions provide opportunities to create novel material systems that can dynamically adapt to its environment. The operating principle is to strategically deform the cellular material so that the shape and size of the cavities are optimized for the intended thermal function. In the compressed state, the cavity spaces are narrow enough to suppress convection heat transfer and utilize the low thermal conductivity property of still air. The expanded state has the optimum cavity dimensions for air to move through the system and exchange heat with the material system. The first stage of the research utilizes the existing thermal optimization studies for establishing the analytical model for predicting the performance of each state as a function of the geometric features. The second stage constructs a parametric model using the predictions, and two separate material architectures were designed and fabricated based on it. The calibrated analytical model can be utilized in designing various dynamic thermal interaction systems at a wide range of conditions and parameters (e.g., climate, temperature, scale, and material).

summary The Poisson’s ratio of materials describes the ratio of the transverse to axial strain. While most materials exhibit non-negative Poisson ratio, here we focus on the topological properties of negative ratio materials also known as auxetic constructs. Digital modelling and physical fabrication are employed to generate and test experimental auxetic configurations. The first set of studies employ 2D space-filling tessellations integrating both negative and positive Poisson ratio cells. The tessellations are designed through binary state transitions and gradual morphing transitions. A second set of studies explores the topological optimization of a single negative Poisson cell configuration following the logic that a cell constitutes the building block of auxetic materials. The third set of studies focuses on the translation of heterogeneous Poisson ratio 2D tessellations into 3D constructs. Here, two methods of fabrication are explored: lamination method and cellular grading. The precision of the cellular grading method renders it particularly suitable for multi-material 3D printing fabrication which is theoretically studied and proposed. Space-filling heterogeneous tessellation studies are applied to architectural and product design proposals. These proposals exhibit properties that could serve to design and develop further research on real-world applications.
