title On the Impact of Machine Learning: Architecture without Architects?
source Ji-Hyun Lee (Eds.) "Hello, Culture!"  [18th International Conference, CAAD Futures 2019, Proceedings / ISBN 978-89-89453-05-5] Daejeon, Korea, pp. 148-167
summary Architecture has always followed and adopted technological breakthroughs of other areas. As a case in point, in the last decades, the field of computation changed the face of architectural practice. Considering the recent breakthroughs of Machine Learning (ML), it is expectable to see architecture adopting ML-based approaches. However, it is not yet clear how much this adoption will change the architectural practice and in order to forecast this change it is necessary to understand the foundations of ML and its impact in other fields of human activity. This paper discusses important ML techniques and areas where they were successfully applied. Based on those examples, this paper forecast hypothetical uses of ML in the realm of building design. In particular, we examine ML approaches in conceptualization, algorithmization, modeling, and optimization tasks. In the end, we conjecture potential applications of such approaches, suggest future lines of research, and speculate on the future face of the architectural profession.

summary In the actual textual landscape, images work activating cognitive and behavioral processes, disrupting the anthropological context of critical thinking based on logical-formal reasoning. Different types of languages –carrying specific signs and syntax- entwine to oral and written text, augmenting the differences and introducing new problematic in education, situation that requires to be investigate, debate and adequate. From this statement and through the presentation of a didactic experience of parametric systems application in a beginning design studio of Architecture, this paper aims to contribute to the discussion of which are the notions and basic strategies needed to initiate significant learning process that allow to think and design starting from emergent design languages.

summary University faculty -adult culture- work from the logic that goes through their speech, didactic model and strategies, providing special links with: the aim of knowledge, transmission mechanisms and technological medium. Students -young culture- receive and deal with knowledge mechanisms from a new logic. In a multimedia framework they establish interpretations using technological medium from semantic decodification. Young graduates, assistants, studio leaders -intermediate culture- coming from traditional learning models with acquired abilities in digital media, are a “potential interface” between both cultures. The impact between fields and cultures implies limitations and risks that may encourage change. A discourse about “new didactic configurations” from the point of view of these three cultures makes possible the exploration of other ways of teaching. Therefore the articulation of teacher-student interrelations and media promotes the development of teaching-learning techniques. [Full paper in Spanish]

title The topics of CAAD: An evolutionary perspective – a research for representing the space of CAAD
source T. Tidafi and T. Dorta (eds) Joining Languages, Cultures and Visions: CAADFutures 2009, PUM, 2009, pp. 626- 641
summary This paper is concerned with the ongoing changes and the evolution of CAAD using machine-assisted techniques. It is feasible to create a hypothesis of the identity of the discipline depicted in the archived published output, and semantically link it to the data cloud. This allows for expansion of the meanings embodied in the research and inference about what CAAD is, and to trace back how the field progressed. We present several case-studies showing how this inference is done and finally, observations are elaborated and an outlook on further work is discussed.

summary The act of design using the graphic language is esential to the organization and determination of the process. Introducing digital tools modifies the design project research. Its application faces the traditional experience and encourages different demands conceptually and operatively. We wonder if the use of digital media, from the very beginning, is possible or pupils must have trainning in the use of conventional graphic in order to be meaningfull. Our proposition is to include digital technology from the beginnitng of the teaching process, in order to explore the potencial of each mode and promoving to learn the normative background.

summary Generative systems have a significant potential to synthesize innovative design alternatives. Still, most of the common systems that have been adopted in design require the designer to explicitly define the specifications of the procedures and in some cases the design space. In contrast, a generative system could potentially learn both aspects through processing a database of existing solutions without the supervision of the designer. To explore this possibility, we review recent advancements of generative models in machine learning and current applications of learning techniques in design. Then, we describe the development of a data-driven generative system titled DeepCloud. It combines an autoencoder architecture for point clouds with a web-based interface and analog input devices to provide an intuitive experience for data-driven generation of design alternatives. We delineate the implementation of two prototypes of DeepCloud, their contributions, and potentials for generative design.

summary The research in this paper is presented from the perspective of a designer interested in investigating using artificial intelligence, specifically machine learning, to act as a co-pilot during architectural design phases. Significant recent interest has been evident in, for instance, rapidly developing text-to-image and intelligent chat AI areas. However, we have a particular focus and have undertaken a series of feasibility experiments to explore the potential for enabling a designer's exploitation of machine learning, and consequently in effect, using machine learning as a co-designer. We conclude that the industry would need to develop certain protocols to take advantage of the opportunities available through such an AI-assisted approach.

doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2009.285
source Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / Yunlin (Taiwan) 22-25 April 2009, pp. 285-294
summary Schools and teachers increasingly apply Online Learning Environments for teaching and course management. In many cases, an existing platform is used to support the curriculum. At the K.U. Leuven in Belgium a campus-wide platform is provided, using a commercial Content Management System. At the same time, the Design and Building Methodology research group at the Department of Architecture, Urbanism and Planning developed a custom portal to organize Computer Aided Architectural Design courses and seminars. Integration of this portal into the university system was rather disappointing, since much of the flexibility and customizability was lost, without any chance of filling in the gaps. This article discusses the possibilities and limitations of existing web-based systems to support Computer Aided Architectural Design teaching and reports on our own experiences from the last decade. A comparison of selected systems is juxtaposed with the requirements derived from these experiences.

title A Machine-Learning Approach to Urban Design Interventions In Non-Planned Settlements
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2022.1.223

summary This study presents generative adversarial networks (GANs), a machine-learning technique that can be used as an urban design tool capable of learning and reproducing complex patterns that express the unique spatial qualities of non-planned settlements. We report preliminary experimental results of training and testing GAN models on different datasets of urban patterns. The results reveal that machine learning models can generate development alternatives with high morphological resemblance to the original urban fabric based on the suggested training process. This study contributes a methodological framework that has the potential to generate development alternatives sensitive to the local practices, thereby promoting preservation of traditional knowledge and cultural sustainability.

source SIGraDi 2010_Proceedings of the 14th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, pp. Bogotá, Colombia, November 17-19, 2010, pp. 104-107
summary Didactic material in digital format is being produced in different contexts focused on similar themes. The efforts of such production are not being optimized. This paper describes the structuring process of a system of collaborative production of didactic material aimed at broadening geometric vocabulary and repertory in architecture. Established material regarding this theme is analyzed through the concept of learning objects. Efforts concentrate on the establishment of a taxonomy to characterize these objects, seeking to make the search and selective recovery of these objects easier. An environment has been made available for sharing, discussion and validation of this material, outlining a methodology for the establishment of the proposed system.

summary Knowledge of geometric drawing, hitherto considered previous in the training context in architecture, has little emphasis in the school curriculum. In the context this work, were recognized approaches such as shape grammar, which explain design practices, unveiling relationships of the geometric form. It was also identified practices of the Gestalt, established under the modern architecture, which sought to stimulate the student to have insights to think about geometric structures implicit in the form. From these references and digital tools, it is demonstrated the types of concepts and some of the exercises that are being used for the configuration of an learning for the insight.

title Experimental Results in Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR): Searching Critical Design Factors within IVR to Increase Architectural Space Qualities
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2007.091
source Predicting the Future [25th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 978-0-9541183-6-5] Frankfurt am Main (Germany) 26-29 September 2007, pp. 91-98
summary The actual study in IVR (Immersive Virtual Reality) proposes a path which may provide meaningful information about the user’s behaviours and difficulties to articulate in immersive worlds. Beyond it, we are searching for parameters to improve design qualities in such an architectural space. Our interest is to use IVR as a medium to research the quality of spaces in particular the atmosphere of such spaces, on the basis of people’s interest and eagerness. Therefore it is important to comprehend the special conditions of the perception and the behaviour of the user in virtual spaces. The purpose is to understand the influence of an IVR environment upon the human being and to develop motivation for a personal use of virtual space as a learning environment. The aim of the analysis was to explore behaviour patterns in a simulated IVR environment. Moving from the dynamic of space, there arises a personal “space-time-system”.

source SIGraDi 2002 - [Proceedings of the 6th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Caracas (Venezuela) 27-29 november 2002, pp. 193-197
summary The purpose of this work is the development of a Digital Learning Material that helps the process of understanding complex concepts, specifically architectural projects. In order to optimize the comprehension of architectural projects new materials can be developed based on multimedia technology. This technology mix different sorts of messages in one single interface, stimulating students in different ways. As an architectural project has many different information to be tansmittd and assimilated, multimedia technology is a good way to organize all of them to comunicate in an efficient way. All these concepts are applied in a proposal for a multimedia learning material: a prototype about an “Architectural Project”.
