The process combines conceptualization, plus integration of streaming technologies, software and similar visual programming compositional techniques. The result are three performances.

title Do Intelligent Objects Need Programmed Users?

summary Intelligent objects for daily use offer greater advantages than electromechanical products. However, they need a user whose life is more methodical, programmed and predictable. As de number of services offered in such products increase, their restrictions in their flexibility of use arise. Finally, users adapt themselves to habits that these objects suggest (for better) or prescribe (for worse). However, a paradox exists. What is controversial for a standard user: the increasing passivity justified in the eternal pursuit of comfort, for a disabled person means achieving independence and autonomy. In order to accomplish the revolutionary equity that computer science claims, the possibility of being excluded for economic reasons should not exist. If not, it will increase the fracture between coexistent realities in the same territory. For these reasons, assuming the risk of being considered naive and idealist, we believe that in order to build a better future it is necessary to promote policies that guarantee the access to new technologies for people with low economic means. Together with the consciousness users gain -related to product selection-, it would break the premature discouragement that the markets try to impose, resigning us to an unjustified idea of weakness and submission.

summary The authors introduce the concept of a Pixel Stream Editor. This forms the basis for an interactive synthesizer for designing highly realistic Computer Generated Imagery. The designer works in an interactive Very High Level programming environment which provides a very fast concept/implement/view iteration cycle. Naturalistic visual complexity is built up by composition of non-linear functions, as opposed to the more conventional texture mapping or growth model algorithms. Powerful primitives are included for creating controlled stochastic effects. The concept of 'solid texture' to the field of CGI is introduced. The authors have used this system to create very convincing representations of clouds, fire, water, stars, marble, wood, rock, soap films and crystals. The algorithms created with this paradigm are generally extremely fast, highly realistic, and asynchronously parallelizable at the pixel level

summary The focus of this article is the exploration of landscape and the question of representation, more specifically how landscape principles can be represented through computation. It is a quest for essential qualities, through an application of philosophical questioning, and a response to a human perception of reality. Reality, as an invention of the human mind, is often thought of as a set of accepted conventions and constructs. Such a reality has an inherent dependency upon cognition where spatial and temporal principles may be defined within the natural and built environment, and further embraced within a cultural context. However, there also exist rules or relations that are neither invented nor formulated by the participants understanding. In effect these relations may not have been effectively articulated, a result perhaps of unfamiliar cues. Therefore, to the participant, these relations reside in the realm of the unknown or even the mystic. The aesthetic often resides in the realm of the mystic. The discovery of the aesthetic, is often an experience that comes from encountering physical and essential beauty where it has been produced through unconscious relations, perceived, yet transcending human understanding. The aspects of space and time, spatial and temporal properties and relations of things and events, are generally accepted conventions. Yet, the existence of a time order, is often not perceived. An understanding of spatial temporal properties may involve a temporal detachment from convention, allowing the release of previously unknown patterns and relations. Virtual realities are well constructed simulations of our environments, yet they may lack the embedded essential qualities of place. Virtual reality should transcend human perception and traditional modes of understanding, and most importantly our limited notions of the temporal nature of our environment. A desire to reach beyond the limits of perceived time order, may take us beyond existing sets of cultural values, and lead to the realization of new spatial/temporal conventions with the assistance of the computer.

summary The dynamics of COVID-19 spread have been studied from an epidemiological perspective, at city, country, and global scales (Rabajante, 2020, Ma, 2020, and Giuliani et al., 2020), although after two years of the pandemic we know that viruses spread mostly through built environments. This study is part of the Spatiotemporal Modeling of COVID-19 spread in buildings research (Gomez, Hadi, and Kemenova et al., 2020 and 2021), which proposes a multidimensional model that integrates spatial configurations, temporal use of spaces, and virus characteristics into one multidimensional model. This paper presents a specific branch of this model that analyzes the behavioral parameters, such as vaccination, masking, and mRNA booster rates, and compares them to reducing room occupancy. We focused on human behavior, specifically human interactions within six feet. We utilized the multipurpose simulation software, AnyLogic, to quantify individual exposure to the virus, in the high school building by Perkins and Will. The results show how the most effective solution, reducing the occupancy rates or redesigning layouts, being the most impractical one, is as effective as 80% of the population getting a third boost.

summary Activities in the building industry in Germany concentrate increasingly on a combination of renovation and new-build. A prerequisite for computer-aided planning in the context of existing buildings is both the use of on-site computer aided surveying techniques and the integration of all professional disciplines in an integrated information and communication system. Current approaches to these issues are unsatisfactory. Methods and techniques in renovation work are being investigated as part of ongoing research at the Bauhaus- Universität Weimar (SFB524 - “Collaborative research center 524 „Materials and Structure in Revitalization of Buildings”). A sub-group (SFB524 - D2 „Planning-Relevant Digital Building Surveying and Information System”) is currently investigating the possibilities of computer-aided building surveying and of joint communcation platforms for engineering disciplines (www.uni-weimar.de/sfb: May 2001). The objective is the development of a general approach for the renovation of buildings. The paper discusses concepts and requirements for a computer-aided system supporting the entire surveying process from the initial site visit to its use in a CAD system.

title High-precision application of GPS in the field of real-time equipment positioning

summary In the frame of its research concerning real-time positioning and control of road construction equipment, the Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées, has carried out in 1996 a study to know more about the actual vertical accuracy that a real-time kinematic (RTK) global positioning system (GPS) sensor could reach, under work site conditions. This study has widely used the dedicated testing facility called SESSYL, built to perform high-accuracy and real-time evaluation tests on positioning systems. It has been performed in collaboration with the French road contractor COLAS and the Ecole Supérieure des Géomètres et Topographes (ESGT). First, there is the proposed adapted geodetic transformation procedure, compatible with the high accuracy requirements. Then, the main results of a special SESSYL tests program are presented, where the impacts of several influencing parameters on the vertical accuracy have been carefully examined. The core part of the paper is the analysis of the typical RTK GPS set of data, from which we have tried to extract two different components: a high-frequency noise, rather easy to filter, and a low-frequency bias. This bias, given its good repeatability, can be modelled and used in prediction to improve in real-time the raw accuracy of the data. As a full-scale validation of our study, a site experiment is finally described, carried out this time on a real piece of equipment (an asphalt paver) during real roadwork.

title A new facility for testing accurate positioning systems for road construction robotics

summary The first part of the paper gives a definition of positioning in the context of road work sites and stresses the advantages offered by the new generation of positioning systems. A logical classification of these systems is also proposed. The `global positioning system' (GPS) technique, as one of the most promising techniques, is detailed. The main point of the paper is the presentation of a new test facility for positioning systems which has been set up at the `Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées' (Central Laboratory of Roads and Bridges). First, its principle is described, based on the re-construction of a 6D reference trajectory to which the measurements of the system in test are compared. Then, the operation of the facility and the post-treatment software which has been specially developed for it are described. Finally, the results of some recent studies are given, results which would have been hard to obtain without using the SESSYL facility. During the first study, the facility was used to establish an accurate time-model of the vertical error and this model allowed us to propose an innovative method for improving the vertical accuracy. During the second study, SESSYL proved its capability of differentiating several state-of-the-art GPS receivers of the same category.

title Are European cities becoming similar?

summary The paper discusses city specific development patterns to overcome todays transport problems. The results are based on recent andongoing research activities at TUW-IVV and ITS. At previous CORP-conferences, we presented the basics and the development of aplanning support tool to find optimal policy packages in urban transport and land use (Emberger, 1998), (Pfaffenbichler, Emberger, 2001). The core of this planning support tool is a dynamic land use and transport interaction model. This model, which we refer to as Sketch Planning Model (SPM), is embedded into an appraisal and optimisation framework. The SPM and this framework were developed in the recently finished European Union funded research project PROSPECTS1. Case studies with this planning supporttool were performed within PROSPECTS for the cities Edinburgh, Helsinki, Madrid, Oslo, Stockholm and Vienna. These cities are principally comparable in regards of their status (capitals and major business and education centres), but different in their size, population density, transport system etc. A set of policy instruments like public transport improvements, car traffic restrictions, and infrastructure provision was available to formulate strategies to reduce negative impacts of transport and to increase welfare. The overall objective was a sustainable development of the city. Although the instruments and the goals are similar in all investigatedcites, different solutions were adequate. The solutions vary in regard of spatial implementation, implementation time and level of implementation. The paper will highlight some reasons for the different development paths of the cities. As well the comparison of the do nothing scenario as the comparison of the most feasible policy strategies shows that European cities are different, need different solutions for their problems and will stay different in the future.

summary In this paper we present a didactic tool named “STORM”, which simulates a real environment in which students can control and program a robot in a very basic way by simply setting switches to configure an action or an activity to be carried out by the robot. The control interface is totally graphic, so it can be used by students from primary schools to universities. The objective of the simulator is to create learning objects to develop the dynamic and strategic competences of students in addition to concepts such as robot navigation and control, and computer programming.

summary The paper concerns the issue of constructing flat vaults from elements topologically interlocking inspired by the Abeille blocks. One of the new ideas that are presented is constructing the vaults in an order opposite to the one considered untill now. The problem of static response on the thrust force, significant for flat vaults, is usually solved by the use of the perimeter frame, added only after arranging all the elements of the vault. The paper presents how to arrange the vault inside a previously made frame thanks to application of special components divided into parts, which are inserted at the end and play the same role as a keystone in a stone arch. The other new concept is shaping vaults based on equilateral triangles and regular hexagons, from hexagonal, romboidal and triangular elements shaped and arranged in a manner similar to the one used for shaping square vaults. The last innovative concept presented in a paper concerns shaping the perimeter frame from the components providing stiffness of the frame only due to topological interlocking. All presented ideas have been analised purely at a geometric level.

summary The emergence of a data space (Big Data and IoT) and, with it, the proliferation of communication means, led many scholars to describe the city through a series of concepts like the informational city, the intelligent city or the cybercity, all of them being characterized by a strong networked consciousness (Castells, Graham, Boyer). The hypothesis of this paper is that game methodology is now gaining momentum and can act as enabler of smarter communities by an increasing access to data infrastructures. This is why the city can be seen as a series of connected playgrounds where interactive tools can support citizen engagement and decision making processes. It does so by going through relevant theoretical background on gamification in the urban context and best practices, to finally describe two student projects developed at CHORA Conscious City, TU Berlin. The two projects are experimental and explore the capabilities of interactive tools in order to support planning processes.

It would not be the first time in history nor the last in which a technological advance is used to monitor society and impress upon it the power of the State. The particularity of this case is that not only could it be misused by the government, but also some members of society could come together in an anarchic movement that, for example, could invade people's privacy, as the fact of knowing the lack of control over this type of practices.

summary This paper presents an interdisciplinary work done at the Museum Oteiza near Pamplona, Spain during 2012 and 2013. The main goal is the use of low cost devices that allows natural interaction, Virtual and Augmented Realities to get the general public closer to the works and concepts of Oteiza through interactive serious games. The most difficult Oteiza’s concepts to understand are those related with the empty space or with time & space. We propose three different activities, shaped as serious game, that use the whole body to interact and play with these concepts. The result is a facility that has been installed at the entrance of the Museum and that can be used for free, before or after a visit to the museum. These activities were presented to 4 experts in Oteiza and the results are discussed. In addition, we gathered more comments after several groups of children tried the application in the museum.

summary In the next 25 years, the elderly population will increase on average to 65 thousand people annually in Chile (INE, 2018). Their independent living is jeopardized partially for diminished visual capacity that difficult spatial perception. Although light does not correct vision impairment, adequate light levels can respond to the needs of older people as preventing visual errors. This study evaluates daylighting availability in an assisting living residence in a southern city in Chile. A quantitative approach resulted in the identification of envelope-retrofit strategies that allow achieving recommended levels of natural lighting, particularly in shared spaces where residents spend most of the day. The results show that it would be possible to achieve better light availability, as it also allows for a better understanding of the contributions of the building envelope. Finally, the study outlines recommendations for future retrofits that meet requirements for visual comfort for a growing senior population.
