summary This paper introduces NetSketch, an application that supports distributed conceptual design by providing tools for modelessly creating, manipulating and viewing 3D models in a shared virtual space. Inherent problems exist with collaborative design tools because of the simultaneous group interaction required for users to smoothly and effectively work together in the same virtual space. With NetSketch, we provide solutions to these problems by providing a fast and direct gesture-based user interface, a set of visual effects that better enable a user's awareness of operations done by other participants, and a set of tools for enhancing visual communication between participants.

summary On a number of occasions after telling people about Corporate Design Foundation and what we do, their reaction is “well, business now understands the importance of design, right?” The answer is yes and no. There is, as they say, good news and bad news. A growing number of senior business executives do understand the possibilities of design. But many still do not. Unfortunately, the majority of mid-level managers do not. While there has been an increasing amount written about design in the business press, there has also been an equal amount in the general press which is misleading or just wrong. There is a great deal more to do.

summary The professional roles and fonctions of architects are linked to the societal context in which they practice. Furthermore, this context, which is not static, has a relationship to the ways in which institutions, groups and individuals are involved in processes for the design and construction of the built environment. This presentation illustrates how the roles and functions of architects, other professionals, their clients and the general public have a bearing on the tools and methods used by the architectural profession to simulate design projects. Traditionally, sketches, renderings and pattern books were used. Then, they were supplemented by axonometric and perspective drawings, written and diagrammatic specifications, photographs and small-scale models. In recent decades mathematical models of diverse kinds, simulation techniques -including small- and full-scale modelling kits -as well as computer aided design and drafting systems have been used. This paper briefly presents these kinds of tools and then presents a typology of them. In conclusion, possible applications for the future are discussed.

summary This paper briefly examines five interrelated themes concerning the use of full-scale simulation models in architectural projects, in the context of research and professional practice. First, the meaning of design is discussed. Second, a multi-functional interpretation of building performance is presented. Third, the main reasons for simulating design projects, in general, and for using full-scale models, in particular, are summarized. Then the antecedent or prerequisite conditions for public participation to occur effectively are discussed. Finally, an overview of the use of full-scale simulation models in European workshops enables us to table four ma n classes of functions for full-scale models.

summary The paper discusses the problem of CAD in architectural design from the point of view of aiding creativity. It argues that so far there is no real evidence that this has been achieved. An explanation for this is offered and the authors suggest that more work needs to be done on how we hold conversations about design. The authors also conclude that, at least until design conversations are better understood, we should concentrate less on pictures and more on words. A first attempt to develop a computer-aided design conversation system is described.

State-of the art representations of this kind derived from a 3D computer model will be discussed on the basis of a case study relating to the destroyed synagogue of Jablonec in the Czech Republic.

In this paper, based on our previous teaching in collaborative virtual environments, the student’s perceptions and evaluations of the courses, we discuss the pedagogy of design teaching in collaborative virtual environments, considering what skills the new generation of designers should have in terms of collaboration, communication and design.

title Robotic Construction by Contour Crafting: The Case of Lunar Construction

summary Contour Crafting is a digitally controlled construction process invented by Professor Behrokh Khoshnevis that fabricates components directly from computer models, using layered fabrication technology. By obviating the need for formwork used in traditional concrete construction, CC can reduce costs and construction times significantly. The technique has great potential as a robotic form of construction reliant on relatively minimal human labor as a form of construction in relatively hazardous environments, such as the Moon with its radiation levels that can prove highly damaging. Current research funded by NASA has been exploring the potential for using CC on the Moon to build structures making use of readily available regolith that is found in great abundance on the surface of the Moon. This article offers an overview of this research and evaluates the merits of using CC on the Moon.

summary The works Acusma and Microfônico by the group Chelpa Ferro not only represent an inflexion point in the group's trajectory but also make reference and allow an interpretation which places Chelpa Ferro amongst several other artists who experimented with sound-noise throughout the 20th century. Since the first modernists sound was object of artistic experiments, always informed by technological innovations. Thus the group inserts itself in such context and augments it, appropriating theirselves of everyday objects to produce their sound or by creating their own specially built apparatuses to amplify inexistent sounds, as in the works here discussed.

The objective of the present proposal is to show by way of a GIS application that presents georeferenced information of the province of San Juan, an integration of written documents, sound documents (popular music), folkloric elements (images) and digitized videos about the cultural inheritance of eminent places of the province of San Juan, that we are more committed ourselves to preserve due to their peculiar aridity characteristics and highly seismical risk. Some personalized icons displaying the afore mentioned resources are incorporated into the GIS application. The GIS-database presents an field destined to give data regarding the information source consulted about the inheritance.

title From an architectural sketch to its semantic representation

summary This paper presents an essay on the needs and viability of the semantic harnessing of architectural sketches in the framework of integrated computer design. A symbolic and relation representation is proposed as the shared architectural model. This is structured with the practical proposals of cognitive sciences about knowledge creation and manipulation. An experiment is described which observes and analyses the composition of professional sketches. Its results are taken as directives to build the architectural model content. summary In this paper, we present our latest research related to the concept of a sketchinterface. After describing our vision of computer assisted design and the conditions necessary for its effective implementation, an original data model is presented, which covers different levels of representation and is grounded in a database of implicit information. We then describe our software prototype, which exploits the potentials of the digital sketch, in order to demonstrate how our ideas are pertinent and the feasibility of three kinds of applications. In particular, we argue in favor of using an architectural software program in relation to the sketch within the same computer assisted environment at an early stage in the design process.

summary This paper presents a 24 degree of freedom input device for 3D modeling. iSphere uses the proximity information of pulling-out and pressing-in capacitive sensors to manipulate 12 control points of a 3D surface simultaneously . The iSphere dodecahedron is demonstrated manipulating an analog parametric model with high-level modeling concepts like push or pull the 3D surfaces. Our pilot experiment shows that iSphere saved many steps of selecting the control point and going through menus. Experts were used to those extra steps and still found themselves doing them but novices saved significant time for surface shaping tasks. 3D systems are benefited to execute high-level modeling commands, but lacking of fidelity is a great issue of analog input device.

summary Our prediction model is based on the development of “Semantic Location Model.” It embodies geometrical and topological information which can increase the efficiency in prediction and make it easy to manipulate the prediction model. Data mining is being implemented to extract the inhabitant's location patterns generated day by day. As a result, the self-learning system will be able to semantically predict the inhabitant's location in advance. This context-aware system brings about the key component of the ubiquitous computing environment. First, we explain the semantic location model and data mining methods. Then the location prediction model for the ubiquitous computing system is described in details. Finally, the prototype system is introduced to demonstrate and evaluate our prediction model.

summary This paper presents a rule-based mechanism for mediating design processes in a web-based collaborative environment. This mechanism is developed based on a logical description of flexible declarative inter-dependency relationships between collaborative design activities. We address design coordination problems by focusing on overlapping problem solving within dynamic workflow. A system prototype is presented to demonstrate our approach. This prototype is part of "DECADE", a long-term project to develop the needed technologies supporting design collaboration.

summary Automated design rule checking (RDC) in Building Information Modelling (BIM) can be challenging especially when dealing with qualitative aspects and intricate regulations like building circulation. The study proposes a novel method for Regulatory Design Rule Checking (RDRC) for building circulation, addressing challenges in translating regulations to computational constructs and extracting relevant information from complex BIM models. Through a tiered compliance assessment, the investigation considers preventive rule-based checks for doors and corridors and explores constraint-based regulatory incentive schemes such as through-block pedestrian links (TBPL). The RDRC analysis identifies non-compliance and concludes with a recommendation for potential adjustments. This work aims to benefit designers and regulators, providing productivity enhancements and a deeper understanding of regulatory intricacies in the context of building circulation.

summary Given a subdivision of the plane induced by a planar graph with n vertices, in this paper the problem of identifying which region of the subdivision contains a given test points is considered. A search algorithm, called point-location algorithm, which operates on a suitably preprocessed data structure is presented. The search runs in time at most O((log n)2), while the preprocessing task runs in time at most O(n log n) and requires O(n) storage. The methods are quite general, since an arbitrary subdivision can be transformed in time at most O(n log n) into one to which the preprocessing procedure is applicable. This solution of the point location problem yields interesting and efficient solutions of other geometric problems, such as spatial convex inclusion and inclusion in an arbitrary polygon
