title A Tale of Three Cities
source VR News. Proceedings of Virtual Heritage Conference 1995 (Bath [UK], Nov 22)
summary The ABACUS Group has been active for some years in the use of computer graphics and multimedia to represent past, present and future buildings in both urban and rural settings. The three cities discussed during the presentation are Split, in former Yugoslavia - a graphical account of the development of Split from its origin in the Diocletian Palace of the Venetian Empire up to the present day; Edinburgh - a multimedia interface to a large-scale three dimensional computer model of Edinburgh Old Town; and Glasgow - Virtual City developments in the run up to the City of Architecture and Design celebrations in 1999. The presentation concludes with a report on the IMAGEA project - an international initiative to construct an Interactive Multimedia Archive of Great European Architecture.

title From Virtual Reality to Real Virtuality
source Design Computing Conference, Sydney
summary The history of CAAD spans a short but eventful 30 years. This paper initially takes stock of the outcomes over this period by focusing sequentially on the modelling of the functional behaviour of building and on the modelling of the formal characteristics of building and cities. It conlcudes with a view of the way forward.

title The Virtual Studio [Conference Proceedings]
source eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9523687-0-6 / Glasgow (Scotland) 7-10 September 1994, 262 p.
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.1994
summary ECAADE was established in 1982 with the intention, across Europe, of facilitating the adoption of the Information Technologies - particularly Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) - within the system of architectural education. The Association, in the 12 years of its existence, has grown in its membership (now close to 350) and in its importance. The annual conferences (Delft 82, Brussels 83, Helsinki 84, Rotterdam 85, Rome 86, Zurich 87, Aarhus 89, Budapest 90, Munich 91, Barcelona 92 and Eindhoven 93) now number 12 and this volume records the 70 or so contributions to the Conference held in Glasgow over the period 7-10 September 1994.The proceedings are arranged according to a number of themes. Theories and Ideas, Teaching and Learning, Visualisation, Multi-Media, Virtual Reality, Virtual Design Studios, Functional Analysis, Design Support Systems and Surveys of Activity. The Conference featured 'long presentations'; and 'short presentations'; the length of these presentations is reflected in the two main sections of this text. To preserve the spirit of conference communication and ensure the rapid dissemination of ideas in a fast grown community of polyglot Europeans, no changes to the papers, which were submitted in Apple Mac and/or PC diskettes, have been imposed; you see them as they were submitted and as the authors intended.

title Information Technology in Design: A Perspective
source Journal of Housing, Building and Planning, vol 1, 0218-6536
summary In October 1990 a small group of people met at Ross Priory on the shores of Loch Lomond in Scotland to celebrate 21 years of computer aided building design. The calloboration- called CAAD Comes of Age - took the form of a seminar with papers presented by academics and design practitioners whose experience of this subject spanned these formative years during which the subject has grown from the minority time interest of a few eccentric academics into a multi- billion dollar business A number of the papers and much of the discussion focused on what had transpired over the 21 year period and how the evolution of the subject corresponded to the predictions which had been made at various times in the past This paper gathers together some of the perceptions which emerged from the event.

title CAAD's Seven Deadly Sins
source Sixth International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Futures [ISBN 9971-62-423-0] Singapore, 24-26 September 1995, pp. 21-22
summary This short paper takes a critical view of the direction of research and development in Computer Aided Architectural Design over the last five years of its twenty five year history. The criticisms are set out as seven deadly sins which, in summary, are: macro-myopic, devu, xenophilia, unsustainability, failure to validate, failure to evaluate

source CAADRIA ‘98 [Proceedings of The Third Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / ISBN 4-907662-009] Osaka (Japan) 22-24 April 1998, pp. 1-10
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.1998.001
summary The extraordinary characteristic of the city which thrills both its citizens and those who visit it, is the complex way in which multitudes of individual buildings, themselves each a complex of individual spaces, combine to form the weft and weave of the urban fabric. No two cities are alike but each and every one has its innate and endearing character: the grandeur of Vienna, the eternity of Rome, the simplicity of Tucson, the elegance of Edinburgh, the dynamic of Tokyo, the vibrancy of Hong Kong. This presentation illustrates how the emerging computer-based technologies can, in a manner hitherto impossible, explain to students of architecture and urban design (and to the public at large) how the design of individual buildings and their spatial relationship to each other, aggregate to create the environment which characterises the city; in a complementary way it demonstrates how the virtual urban voyager can not only identify and visit individual buildings, but enquire within - to observe, understand and even handle the contents.

title Communication of Heritage The Evolution of Digital Patrimony in the Built Environment
source ENVISIONING ARCHITECTURE: IMAGE, PERCEPTION AND COMMUNICATION OF HERITAGE [ISBN 978-83-7283-681-6],Lodz University of Technology, 23-26 September 2015, pp.283-289
summary This contribution deals initially with the notion of a “virtual prototype” of existing or proposed built artefacts within the computer. It provides an account of how the information and communication technologies evolved. Early applications of the technology are illustrated through the multimedia work of the ABACUS group at the University of Strathclyde. Recent applications are illustrated through the laser-scanning work of the Digital Design Studio at the Glasgow School of Art. The contribution concludes by addressing the underlying issues of digital patrimony.

title A Classification of Multi-Media Applications in Architecture
source Multimedia and Architectural Disciplines [Proceedings of the 13th European Conference on Education in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe / ISBN 0-9523687-1-4] Palermo (Italy) 16-18 November 1995, pp. 155-160
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.1995.155
summary Drawing on multi-media research and development in the ABACUS Group (Department of Architecture and Building Science at the University of Strathclyde), and on work from other Institutions reported in recent ECAADE and ACADIA conferences, this paper attempts a classification of the applications of multi-media to architectural education and practice. It goes on to identify further benefits which the technology could bring to Computer Aided Architectural Design. Finally, it proposes a mechanism for sharing our multi-media products.

title Sustainability: Real or Virtual?
source Connecting the Real and the Virtual - design e-ducation [20th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9541183-0-8] Warsaw (Poland) 18-20 September 2002, pp. 12-13
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2002.012
summary Sustainability in the built environment is difficult to define but easy to recognise. We can observe it in those buildings which have been with us for many decades, centuries, even millennia which have survived because they have proved to be fit-for-purpose(s), cost beneficial, environmentally friendly and culturally significant. The past’s relatively slow rate of change in building technology and social need allowed the evolutionary survival of buildings which are now our sustainability icons; but what of the future? How can we design for the future in a period of accelerating social, economic and technological change to secure a sustainable built environment which will be recognised and acknowledged by following generations.
