summary This research investigates architectural conceptual design and discusses its recent historical, philosophical and theoretical development within the overall architectural design process and attempts to establish an objective definition more tuned to current thinking and advancement in technology. It also evaluates the various traditional and information technology (IT) tools available to the designer and establishes their relationship to the conceptual design process in order to identify if any of these tools, in particular the IT tools, have a role to play in the practice and the enhancement of the conceptual design process. A survey of Scottish practicing architects (small to medium size practices) was undertaken to validate the results of the investigation. The results seem to suggest that IT tools are not essential to the conceptual design process but that they are very well capable of enhancing the creativity and speed of some aspects of it. They also suggest the existence of an inherent resistance amongst Architects / designers to utilising these tools in conceptual design. It is, furthermore, identified that if practitioners were to encompass new working practices and acquire new skills, IT tools could also provide powerful new modes of communication with the client. A correlation between the size of the practice and the degree of exposure and experience of IT tools was also established. To test some of the above findings, a design studio experiment was undertaken where half of the students adopted digital tools, utilising SketchUp software and digital sketchpads, whilst the others adopted traditional tools for the conceptual design part of their projects. No attempt was made to gauge the quality of the actual designs produced. The results indicate that the SketchUp group rated their conceptual design experience higher in terms of efficiency, flexibility and communication. The control group, who had dominantly adopted traditional freehand sketching, were impressed by the outcome from the SketchUp group. All student who answered the questionnaire, both SketchUp and control groups, said they would consider adopting some form of 3D sketching in the future.

title Redirecting design generation in architecture

summary Design generation has been the traditional culmination of computational design theory in architecture. Motivated either by programmatic and functional complexity (as in space allocation) or by the elegance and power of representational analyses (shape grammars, rectangular arrangements), research has produced generative systems capable of producing new designs that satisfied certain conditions or of reproducing exhaustively entire classes (such as all possible Palladian villas), comprising known and plausible new designs. Most generative systems aimed at a complete spatial design (detailing being an unpopular subject), with minimal if any intervention by the human user / designer. The reason for doing so was either to give a demonstration of the elegance, power and completeness of a system or simply that the replacement of the designer with the computer was the fundamental purpose of the system. In other words, the problem was deemed either already resolved by the generative system or too complex for the human designer. The ongoing democratization of the computer stimulates reconsideration of the principles underlying existing design generation in architecture. While the domain analysis upon which most systems are based is insightful and interesting, jumping to a generative conclusion was almost always based on a very sketchy understanding of human creativity and of the computer's role in designing and creativity. Our current perception of such matters suggests a different approach, based on the augmentation of intuitive creative capabilities with computational extensions. The paper proposes that architectural generative design systems can be redirected towards design exploration, including the development of alternatives and variations. Human designers are known to follow inconsistent strategies when confronted with conflicts in their designs. These strategies are not made more consistent by the emerging forms of design analysis. The use of analytical means such as simulation, couple to the necessity of considering a rapidly growing number of aspects, means that the designer is confronted with huge amounts of information that have to be processed and integrated in the design. Generative design exploration that can combine the analysis results in directed and responsive redesigning seems an effective method for the early stages of the design process, as well as for partial (local) problems in later stages. The transformation of generative systems into feedback support and background assistance for the human designer presupposes re-orientation of design generation with respect to the issues of local intelligence and autonomy. Design generation has made extensive use of local intelligence but has always kept it subservient to global schemes that tended to be holistic, rigid or deterministic. The acceptance of local conditions as largely independent structures (local coordinating devices) affords a more flexible attitude that permits not only the emergence of internal conflicts but also the resolution of such conflicts in a transparent manner. The resulting autonomy of local coordinating devices can be expanded to practically all aspects and abstraction levels. The ability to have intelligent behaviour built in components of the design representation, as well as in the spatial and building elements they signify, means that we can create the new, sharper tools required by the complexity resulting from the interpretation of the built environment as a dynamic configuration of co-operating yet autonomous parts that have to be considered independently and in conjunction with each other.   P.S. The content of the paper will be illustrated by a couple of computer programs that demonstrate the princples of local intelligence and autonomy in redesigning. It is possible that these programs could be presented as independent interactive exhibits but it all depends upon the time we can make free for the development of self-sufficient, self-running demonstrations until December.

summary The issue of termination has recently re-emerged as a result of new approaches to design generation, which link termination to user intervention. The similarities between this approach to termination and the conventional creative artistic process suggest that the product of thegenerative system is amenable to analysis in terms of well-formedness. A formal measure of well-formedness could be employed as an automatic termination trigger. The paper proposes that such a measure can be derived from structural information theory. By applying thecompression of structural information theory to meaningful principles of a design world we derive a consistent, universal description of the design result at any given state. This description expresses the correlation of the design with its formal constraints, as well as the general perception of the design’s patterns. The combination of the amount of structuralinformation in the design’s code and the presence of specific (sub)patterns in the same code arguably provide the triggers for termination of a generative process.

summary The acoustic computational simulation presents many advantages but at the same time there are some limits corresponding, among others, to the modelisation of the hall geometry. The integrated modelers of geometry of the halls in the acoustic simulation software are based especially on the programming code modelisation via text editors of coordinate points and not on the graphical modelisation, as the CAD software is. In cases of complex architectural shapes of halls, the majority of the acoustic simulation software imperatively needs to import a model from a CAD software. However, the modelisation of the geometry of the hall must take into account several criteria in order to run in an acoustic simulation software, and optimize the calculation results, such as the plane surfaces, the limited number of surfaces in some cases, the elimination of the unnecessary elements, the accepted geometry model format, etc. This paper explains the description and the particularities of three different modelisation processes of the Architectural School Amphitheater of Bordeaux in a CAD system in order to be adequate for acoustic simulation via acoustic software, such as ASCII, dxf and normals orientation model formats. It also presents computer automatization aspects of these processes integrated in a plate-form adaptable to a CAD system named “CAD-Acoustic.” These modelisation processes can also be a helpful tool during the architectural conception of the acoustic hall.

summary Nowadays, common methodologies in telegeoprocessing–telegeomonitoring use telecommunication means such as the GPS in order to transmit geographical coordinates to modelling and simulation systems. These 3D geodetic coordinates (φ, λ, h) can be used by modeling systems via specifics interfaces in order to proceed to real-time modelling of the remotely transmitted data. A previous published work describes a real-time remote 3D digitizing and modelling procedure via transmitted Global Positioning System (GPS) data from the field towards to a CAD system. However, these GPS data must be converted to adequate coordinate’s format (x, y, z) so that the CAD system can use them. This paper presents the computing development of a specific application adapted to a CAD modelling system permitting the conversion of the geodetic coordinates to cartesian coordinates. It presents the relation between geodetic and cartesian coordinates, the options of the final developed application and finally some schematic aspects of the computing process. The application development is realized in AutoCAD modelling system environment via special developed interface in Visual Basic (VBA) and Visual Lisp programming language. The aim of this work is to give the possibility to a CAD modelling system to “translate” and receive automatically geographical coordinates or to convert manually and selectively geodetic coordinates φ, λ, h to cartesian coordinates x, y, z.

summary Mathematical constructions and concepts can be utilized in a number of methods to investigate the process of generating architectural forms. One is to technically layout architectural elements along such constructions, another is to explicitly develop forms corresponding exactly to the underlying concept, and another is to use such concepts as inspiration, a starting point for design. A hybrid method is to follow an interpretive approach, one that uses a mathematical concept as a framework to begin to investigate architecture forms. Architectural considerations are applied both at the beginning of the process and continually throughout the process as a better understanding of the underlying concept is developed. This paper attempts to use cellular automata is such a way. The process of investigating such concepts, it is believed, will help other such approaches, as well as, more traditional approaches of design development.

In their design process, the authors tried to reconcile the visual nature of geometric vocabulary with parametric nature of interface design and dynamic nature of information organization. The project resulted in experimental interactive tools for information search and navigating complex information structures. 2. YOU ARE HERE. A study in interactivity. This paper refers to a studio project in interface design, conducted at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, where individual designers explored essential concepts in navigating complex structures of information. Taking the notion of You-Are-Here as a point of departure, individual designers explored various definitions and interpretations of the notion's three components: You(We/They, etc)-Are(Will Be/Have Been, etc)-Here(in Time/in Space). Exploring specific instances of parametric design and developing linked, multiple representations for information display resulted in a broad spectrum of contexts associated with navigation. Specific descriptions of individual instances will accompany the final presentation of the project.

title The ideological basis of generative expression in design

summary This paper will discuss issues concerning the design ideology supporting the use and development of generative design. This design ideology is based on the unique qualities of craft production and on the forms or ideas from nature or the natural characteristics of materials. The main ideology presented here is the ideology of the 1980´s art craft production in Finland. It is connected with the general Finnish design ideology and with the design ideology of other western countries. The ideology for these professions is based on the common background of design principles stated in 19th century England. The early principles developed through the Arts and Crafts tradition which had a great impact on design thinking in Europe and in the United States. The strong continuity of this design ideology from 19th century England to the present computerized age can be detected. The application of these design principles through different eras shows the difference in the interpretations and in the permission of natural decorative forms. The ideology of the 1980ïs art craft in Finland supports the ideas and fulfilment of generative design in many ways. The reasons often given as the basis for making generative design with computers are in very many respects the same as the ideology for art craft. In Finland there is a strong connection between art craft and design ideology. The characteristics of craft have often been seen as the basis for industrial design skills. The main themes in the ideology of the 1980´s art craft in Finland can be compared to the ideas of generative design. The main issues in which the generative approach reflects a distinctive ideological thinking are: Way of Life: The work is the communication of the maker´s inner ideas. The concrete relationship with the environment, personality, uniqueness, communication, visionary qualities, development and growth of the maker are important. The experiments serve as a media for learning. Taste and Aesthetic Education: The real love affair is created by the non living object with the help of memories and thought. At their best objects create the basis in their stability and communication for durable human relationships. People have warm relationships especially with handmade products in which they can detect unique qualities and the feeling that the product has been made solely for them. Counter-culture: The aim of the work is to produce alternatives for technoburocracy and mechanical production and to bring subjective and unique experiences into the customerïs monotonious life. This ideology rejects the usual standardized mass production of our times. Mythical character: There is a metamorphosis in the birth of the product. In many ways the design process is about birth and growth. The creative process is a development story of the maker. The complexity of communication is the expression of the moments that have been lived. If you can sense the process of making in the product it makes it more real and nearer to life. Each piece of wood has its own beauty. Before you can work with it you must find the deep soul of its quality. The distinctive traits of the material, technique and the object are an essential part of the metamorphosis which brings the product into life. The form is not only for formïs sake but for other purposes, too. You cannot find loose forms in nature. Products have their beginnings in the material and are a part of the nature. This art craft ideology that supports the ideas of generative design can be applied either to the hand made crafts production or to the production exploiting new technology. The unique characteristics of craft and the expression of the material based development are a way to broaden the expression and forms of industrial products. However, for a crafts person it is not meaningful to fill the world with objects. In generative, computer based production this is possible. But maybe the production of unique pieces is still slower and makes the industrial production in that sense more ecological. People will be more attached to personal and unique objects, and thus the life cycle of the objects produced will be longer.

summary Design ideas, like scientific theories, are falsifiable hypotheses subject to testing and experimentation and—if need be—replacement by newer ideas or theories. Design ideas also are known through distributed cognition, in which a mental construct and an external representation complement each other. Representations may be categorized along the axes 2D-3D and Analog-Digital, plus a proposed third axis from Form-Making to Form-Finding. In Form-Making, the mental construct component (of distributed cognition) arises before the representation. In Form-Finding, representation arises before the mental construct. All media of representation have different affordances. Certain media and representations afford Form-Making more so than Form-Finding; and vice versa. Design educators, students and practitioners will benefit from conscious, systematic choice of media and methods that afford an appropriate range of Form-Making and Form-Finding behavior when proposing and testing design ideas.

summary Building design is an integrative endeavor encompassing a multi-variate agenda that deals simultaneously with issues of architectural elements, their attributes (geometry, material properties, etc.), contextual variables (e.g., the uncontrollable external environmental conditions), and building performance variables (e.g., the potentially controllable indoor environment in terms of thermal, acoustical, visual requirements). Ultimately, an important objective of design is to create built environments that are responsive to occupant needs and building performance requirements. This paper will suggest a framework for developing appropriate representations of the complexities involved in building performance simulation. This is based on studies of the communication requirements pertaining to the informational content involved in the design process, and the interfacial relationships between various analytical components as well as between the user and the system. The applicability and effectiveness of this theoretical framework is demonstrated using the example of a fully operational hygro-thermal analysis program (META-4) developed by the authors.

title Meta-Cognitive Mappings: Growing Neural Networks for Generative Urbanism

summary This paper examines the use of dynamic learning systems and adaptive topologies within neural networks models, and their implications as a tool for architectural mappings. The principal investigation is the ability of such systems to identify/ map/ model/ represent flows within dynamic data sets and identify topological relationships between these flows. A growing neural network [GNN] model is proposed, able to map dynamic data inputs over time. It is based on Kohonen’s early self-organising feature maps [SOM] and takes as its starting point previous work by CECA with neural networks in an architectural context, as well as other examples of neural gases, and GNNs, in order to develop a model capable of ‘autopoietic’ behaviour and ‘meta – learning’. The principal investigation is the ability of such a system to identify/ map/ model/ represent flows within dynamic data sets and identify topological relationships between these flows.

As a case study, the proposed neural network model has been used to map ‘urban territory’, as part of an on going architectural research project, based in North London. The project takes the notion of ‘urban territories’ rather than ‘urban space’ as the field for interrogation, as a description of temporal spatial occupation space, rather than spatial physical permanence. Furthermore, the GNN may be used to identify the relationships between unused and vacant sites along the street. In this way, the GNN may become a means of proposing architectural interventions for these spaces, so that the territories of those that occupy it and the negotiations between them are not lost.

summary This analysis investigates whether and to what degree quantifiable spatial attributes, as expressed in plan representations, can capture elements related to the experience of spatial identity. By combining different methods of shape and spatial analysis it attempts to quantify spatial attributes, predominantly derived from plans, in order to illustrate patterns of interrelations between spaces through an objective automated process. The study focuses on the scale of the urban block as the basic modular unit for the formation of urban configurations and the issue of spatial identity is perceived through consistency and differentiation within and amongst urban neighbourhoods.
