title The role of collective intelligence in design: A protocol study of online design communication
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2011.687
source Proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / The University of Newcastle, Australia 27-29 April 2011, pp. 687-696
summary Web-enabled collective intelligence in design invites anyone to contribute to a design process through crowd-sourcing. We use a protocol analysis method to analyse the forum data on a collective intelligence web site, studying communication among individuals who are motivated to participate in the design process. A protocol analysis allows us to compare collective intelligence in design to similar studies of individual and team design. Our analysis shows that a design process that includes collective intelligence shares processes of ideation and evaluation with individual and team design, and also includes a significant amount of social networking. Including collective intelligence in design can extend the typical design team to include potential users and amateur perspectives that direct the design to be more sensitive to users’ needs and social issues, and can serve a marketing purpose.

title Extending the Design Process into the Knowledge of the World
source Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures 2011 [Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures / ISBN 9782874561429] Liege (Belgium) 4-8 July 2011, pp. 203-216.
summary Research initiatives throughout history have shown how a designer typically makes associations and references to a vast amount of knowledge based on experiences to make decisions. With the increasing usage of information systems in our everyday lives, one might imagine an information system that provides designers access to the 'architectural memories' of other architectural designers during the design process, in addition to their own physical architectural memory. In this paper, we discuss how the increased adoption of semantic web technologies might advance this idea. We briefly discuss how such a semantic web of building information can be set up, and how this can be linked to a wealth of information freely available in the Linked Open Data (LOD) cloud.

title Industry Foundation Classes: A Space-Based Model Scheme?
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2008.117
source Architecture in Computro [26th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 978-0-9541183-7-2] Antwerpen (Belgium) 17-20 September 2008, pp. 117-124
summary This paper illustrates our findings concerning space based design methodologies and interoperability issues for today’s Building Information Modeling (BIM) environments. A method is elaborated which enables building designers to perform an automated energy use analysis, based on an Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) model derived from a commercial BIM environment, in this case Autodesk Revit 9.1. A prototype application was built, which evaluates the building model as well as vendor-neutral exchange mechanisms, in accordance with the Flemish Energy Performance Regulation (EPR) standard. Several issues regarding the need for space-based building models are identified and algorithms are developed to overcome possible shortcomings.

summary The growing pressure on natural resources and the increase in demand for construction materials highlight for the construction industry the relevance of opening space for constructive alternatives and materials with less environmental impact. Additive manufacturing has developed through various technologies, materials and scales. 3D printing for construction has grown significantly. An obvious challenge for this technology corresponds to the geometric-constructive solutions that involve other materials for mechanical reinforcement. This research works over the initial development of a construction system based on clay paste reinforced with vegetable ropes, which uses additive manufacturing protocols. Through constructive experiments that integrate string reinforcements into 3d print. The lines of work operate in: Design of architectural elements, Programming of constructive robotic routines, Rheological study of printable clay and fiber pastes and Design of effectors for extrusion of pastes.

source Communicating Space(s) [24th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9541183-5-9] Volos (Greece) 6-9 September 2006, pp. 724-729
summary This paper investigates the difference of spatial perception and cognition between virtual and real architectural environments. Specifically, three different aspects have been studied, concerning the live perception and cognition of a complex actual building, the perception and cognition of a high quality rendered virtual space, as well as the perception and cognition of a non-photorealistic virtual environment. To study the differences between these three types a series of experiments were prepared, in which students of architecture participated and statistical results were drawn. Earlier studies have investigated the desirability of key simulation attributes for architectural design visualization, but extensive research on what contributes to a better spatial comprehension is still missing. This experiment is part of a series of experiments mainly focused on the perception and cognition in virtual spaces. The results of these experiments were correlated with each other, each one leading to new ideas of experimentation. Preliminary results confirm earlier findings from previous similar experiments. It was found that there was a statistically significant tendency of the students towards larger scatter in more luminous virtual space as well as a tendency to visit the lit part of virtual space. Visitors of the photorealistic spaces also seem to have better knowledge of the depth of space in comparison to those navigating in the non photorealistic space.

title Geographical Information Systems and Decision Support for Envi-ronmental Management
source Second Design and Decision Support Systems in Architecture & Urban Planning (Vaals, the Netherlands), August 15-19, 1994
summary The growing requirement for spatial decision support systems in Urban and Regional Management is pointed out. This has come about due to the increasing complexity of modern human activities, the increase in awareness of the negative consequences of mankind's technological development on the environment, and also due to the need to respect new regulations and legislation regarding environmental impacts. Such spatial decision support systems need to manipulate and analyze a wide variety of spatially referenced information, frequently in large quantities. Geographical Information Systems are now the chosen means for supporting such information, but in order to arrive at decisions further analysis modules and decision aids frequently need to be linked to them, or integrated with them. Linking multicriteria decision aid with spatial analysis is one way in which spatially referenced information can be used to arrive at decisions in situations where there are many and conflicting criteria. Examples of applications of these ideas to real management problems, including waste management, river management and site management are used to show how spatial information can now be manipulated to aid decisions, and to arrive at some of the design requirements for more flexible and applicable decision support systems. The merits and disadvantages of several different approaches to design and implementation of decision support systems, especially from the users point of view, are discussed.

source II Seminario Iberoamericano de Grafico Digital [SIGRADI Conference Proceedings / ISBN 978-97190-0-X] Mar del Plata (Argentina) 9-11 september 1998, pp. 310-315
summary It is undeniable that the computer has affected every aspect of our lives. Many people work with computers on a daily basis, from writing e-mail or simply browsing the internet to hours of serious modeling and drafting for those in the architecture field. As we spend more time working with computers, research into improving computer teaching and working environments becomes more important. For those working in an architecture office, it almost certain that a major part of the day will be spent in front of a computer drafting. This research provides a preliminary set of guidelines that can be applied in the design of computer working/teaching environments. The on-going research is focussed in creating facilities geared toward user comfort and productivity and improving teaching environments. It covers issues regarding the position and orientation of the room, lighting aspect (including natural and artificial light), acoustics, user visual comfort, psychrometric conditions, furnishings, and the adaptability of the space for future changes. The project includes analysis of existing examples of computer-lecture rooms, noting the problems and suggesting improvements.

title An Ontology-based Reasoning Framework: Towards Multi-level and Data-efficient Building Material Stock Modelling
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2024.2.335
source Nicole Gardner, Christiane M. Herr, Likai Wang, Hirano Toshiki, Sumbul Ahmad Khan (eds.), ACCELERATED DESIGN - Proceedings of the 29th CAADRIA Conference, Singapore, 20-26 April 2024, Volume 2, pp. 335–344
summary The materials stored in existing urban buildings represent a significant share of globally accumulated resources, the composition and quantity of which should be tracked for management and reuse purposes. Due to the coarse-grained nature of building data at the city level, the description of building material stock (BMS) is usually limited to the material intensity (MI) level of several key materials, omitting the component-level analysis of construction elements, and building devices. Hence, a flexible and compatible modelling framework is needed for BMS modelling to adopt different levels of detailed building data. This study proposes an ontology-based framework, which sets the characteristics of available building data as context and makes reasoning for a feasible modelling level. An ontology is developed to capture context knowledge and define the BMS concepts and their properties. A reasoning algorithm is designed to query and categorise building instances with the same attributes into an archetype, to integrate their various granularity of property data, and to calculate the material stocks at appropriate levels. Some Singapore buildings are used for ontology instantiation and explanation. This framework is anticipated to be a new paradigm for multi-level BMS modelling and contribute strategies for urban circularity design.08644890

summary Hutt (1966) demonstrated that familiarity, clarity, simplicity, and congruity are four stimulus characteristics eliciting play. When the participant reaches this status of an activity, in which is at this point that the playfulness element enters into play, and play is an important ingredient of the creative process. Correspondently, the characteristics in digital design studios which are rapid and broad exploration, systematic design process, the use of suitable digital media, and problem solving system reveal the analogical qualities with play. Since creativity is crucial in design processes, it is worthwhile to study relationships between play and digital design studio to discover possible means to benefit and facilitate digital design learning.

title MODELLING DETAILED INFORMATION FLOWS IN BUILDING DESIGN WITH THE PARAMETER-BASED DESIGN STRUCTURE MATRIX
source Design Studies, 27(1), pp. 99-122
summary The Architecture/Engineering/Construction (AEC) industry is one of the multidisciplinary domains in which collaboration among related parties is of utmost importance. Despite the intense flow of information between design professionals, there is a lack of research to better understand and manipulate these flows. Most of the current process modelling tools in the AEC industry do not enable analyses of iterative information cycles. Moreover, these tools represent the process at high levels, thus, they are inadequate for multi-parameter problems like building design. With a view to alleviate these problems, this paper introduces the use of parameter-based design structure matrix as a process modelling and system analysis tool for building design. The method reveals insights into the process structure, optimum sequence of parameter decisions, iterative cycles and concurrency in the process. The application of the method is demonstrated through a case study on suspended ceiling design in a real-life project.

title PROCESS INTEGRATION IN BUILDING DESIGN USING THE PARAMETER-BASED DESIGN STRUCTURE MATRIX
source Design Studies, 27(1), pp. 99-122In B. Tuncer (Ed.), E-Activities in Building Design and Construction. (pp. 63-72). Paris: Europia
summary This paper reviews existing process models in the Architecture-Engineering-Construction (AEC) industry and identifies two common deficiencies in them: 1. Current process models used in the industry still have a top-down approach including very little information about interrelationships at lower levels. Although these models provide a good overview of the design process, they are often too abstract to define, in detail, for complex multi-parameter problems. 2. Iteration is an important problem in collaborative design. However, most of the existing process models fail in identifying and minimizing it. With a view to alleviate these problems, this paper introduces the parameter-based Design Structure Matrix (DSM) as a tool for process integration and improvement in building design. The uses of the tool are shown via simple examples and suggestions are made for further research.

title A FRAMEWORK FOR BUILDING DESIGN PROCESS MODELING WITH PARAMETER-BASED DESIGN STRUCTURE MATRICES
source In C. J. Anumba (Ed.), Innovative Developments in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction. (pp. 25-31). Rotterdam: MillPress
summary Architecture/Engineering/Construction (AEC) industry is one of the multidisciplinary domains in which collaboration among related parties is utmost important. While the knowledge needed for building processes are distributed among the different participants from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, the product of their activities, i.e. the building itself, must be highly integrated. Despite the intense flow of information between design professionals, there is a lack of research to better understand and manipulate these flows. Furthermore, most of the current process modeling tools in the AEC industry do not enable analyses of iteration in the process and they represent the process at high levels with very little information at lower levels. In order to resolve the issues mentioned above, this paper introduces the use of parameter-based dependency structure matrix as a process modeling and system analysis tool for building design. The method reveals insights into the process structure, optimum sequence of parameter decisions, iterative cycles and concurrency in the process. A knowledge management framework for parameter-based DSM applications is proposed and the application of the framework is demonstrated through a real life building design problem.

summary As one of the domains of urban planning and design, that of green space is lagging behind in terms of the use of advanced computer technology, mo dels and design methodology compared to, for example, retail and transportation planning. However, recently, there is some evidence of the development and testing of tools such as visualization, GIS and conjoint analyses in this area, although not of more integrated Decision Support Systems. The purpose of this study is to outline ideas and needs for thedevelopment of a Decision Support System for the planning and design of green space. The objective is to provide planners with an integrated framework for the provision and management of these parts of urban areas.
