summary What does it take to run the ACADIA conference? The answer, unsurprisingly, is coffee. Volunteers brewed fifty gallons of it over the course of three days this year in Denver. You will also need a lot of iced green tea, diet coke, and chocolate. The theme this year is caffeine -- leave the instant decaf and herbal teas at Costco, thank you. But before you start the coffee maker, you will need to assemble swag bags. Once the swag arrived, it took hours to fill the bags -- dozens of cardboard boxes emptying as volunteers slowly lost ground to the “sea of red” overtaking every square inch of the storage room.

summary This paper describes the application of MATRAN-III, a computer program developed by the author, to planning the space for a branch bank in Southern California. MATRAN-III is used to identify clusters of elements within a set of interrelated elements. The program accepts any arbitrary listing of the elements and their proximal relations and creates an adjacency matrix. This matrix is block diagonalized yielding visually recognizable patterns which can be mapped into line-dot diagrams. These diagrams can then be presented to a designer providing him with a memory pattern from which we can begin laying out the geometric configuration of the space.

summary Few people would argue that architectural education, ideally a complex holistic experience, completely integrates the many aspects and concerns that contribute to the design and realization of a building. This is hardly surprising given the vast array of information that architecture schools with limited resources attempt to present to students within constricted time frames. One may argue that in attempting to approach such a holistic educational goal, representations of reality on a computer screen are no more useful or provocative than conventional communication devices: slides, photographs, drawings, the spoken and printed word, moving pictures (film, video), and various combinations of all of these. The opportunities offered by computer-driven multimedia presentations, however, lie in the speed and relevance of connections made between associated ideas in various media formats. In particular, a multimedia presentation, if carefully authored and developed, can provide a wide range of interactive information gathering pathways. The approach called ArchiMedia offers a means for presenting a wide variety of information about a range of building types in an interactive format with the goal of supporting the creative and practical processes of communication among teachers and students.

summary In the future of Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD), architects clearly need more than just computer aided design and drafting systems (CAD). Unquestionably CAD systems continue to become increasingly powerful, but there is more to designing a good building than its three-dimensional existence, especially in the eyes of all the non-architects of the world: users, owners, contractors, regulators, environmentalists. The ultimate measure of a building's quality has something to do with how well it behaves over time. Predictions about its performance have many different dimensions; how much it costs to build, to operate, and to demolish; how comfortable it is; how effectively people can perform their functions in it; how much energy it uses or wastes. Every year dozens of building performance simulation programs are being written that can predict performance over time along any of these dimensions. That is why the need for both CAD systems and performance predictors can be taken for granted, and why instead it may be more interesting to speculate about the need for 'design tools'. A design tool can be defined as a piece of software that is easy and natural for architects to use, that easily accommodates three-dimensional representations of the building, and that-predicts something useful about a building's performance. There are at least five different components of design tools that will be needed for the design environment of the future.

summary The term "Computer-Aided Design" for some people is reserved exclusively for drafting systems that provide a 2- or 3-dimensional graphic representation of a building. But many other issues bear on the final form of a building, issues that initially cannot be represented in a drawing of that building. These issues include thermal performance, lighting, economics, behavioral factors, acoustics, structural safety, etc. Architects in the future will have a whole kit of computer-aided design tools to help them address all of these non-graphic issues. A "design tool" might be defined as something that helps an architect make a better design decision. But the development of design tools also has a hidden agenda: they leave the architect with a richer understanding of the underlying issues involved. In other words, they also teach.

title An Interactive Computer Graphic Daylighting Design Tool

summary A fast simple interactive computer program which plots daylight curves has been developed for hands-on use by architects at the beginning of the design process. It calculates daylight illuminations levels using the well known IES/LOF method. The most important feature of the program is its friendly interface, which means that designers with no computer literacy can easily describe their building and quickly progress through as many design modifications as desired. The program is self-instructional, giving first-time users a demonstration of its various features, then inviting them to go back and put their own building. The program is written in FORTRAN IV and runs on Tektronix storage tube graphics terminal

summary Design studio critiques are key moments for students' learning and designing processes. During critiques, the representational ecosystem provides a setting for the critique to unfold. Tutors and students, while presenting and discussing students' designs, interact with each other and the representational ecosystem. In this article, a case study illustrates our method to measure the effect of a change of representational ecosystem on the critiques' activity. Our three settings include traditional desk critiques, 1/50 scale mockup critiques and immersive Virtual Reality critiques (with HYVE-3D). Each type of critique is analyzed by using video coding as well as protocol analysis.

summary Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality research in the architecture field show a variety of possible uses of systems to accompany designers, laymen and decision makers in their architectural design process. This article provides a survey of VR and AR devices among a corpus of papers selected from conferences and journals on CAAD (Computer Aided Architectural Design). A closer look at some specific research projects highlights their potentials and limits, which formalize milestones for future challenges to address. Identifying advantages and drawbacks of those devices gave us insights to propose an alternative type of system, CORAULIS, including both VR and SAR technologies, in order to support collaborative design to be implemented in a pedagogical environment.

summary ACADIA was founded in the early 1980s with a mission, like similar initiatives (e.g. eCAADe, CAAD Futures, etc.), to disseminate knowledge on computation in architectural design, planning, and education, as well as to contribute, through computation, in shaping “humane physical environments.” Four decades later, the question ‘What is computation?’ is so ubiquitous and pervasive that it becomes elusive. Those of us old enough to remember would recall generations of pioneers eager to introduce new tools, methods, etc. to the community, as well as the resistance against ‘the digital’ in architecture. Nevertheless, from our present viewpoint computation seems to have won. Computing is everywhere, not just within academic research or the profession’s ‘avant-garde,’ but in virtually all architectural practices. If there is even an outside to computation in architecture today, it would be difficult to pinpoint.

summary The paper suggests virtual reality (VR) as an architectural medium on the continuum of visionary architectural drawings of the past centuries. It argues that architecture and contemporary videogames engage with and share very similar concerns and aesthetic sensibilities. The potential of VR to develop designs and spatial configurations impossible to construct in physical reality but perfectly perceivable by our sensory apparatus, uncovers a latent domain of spatial aesthetics that architects can experiment with, develop and harness. The latter half of the paper discusses an experimental master studio module developed at the Institute of Architecture and Media of TU Graz, in which architecture students were called to develop interactive spatiotemporal environments in the VR videogame medium.

summary Tree planting in design practice is considered simply as void fillers or view blockers. However, for a sustainable design, creat- ing places using trees need to be reconsidered. Going beyond tradi- tional tree plantings in urban environments, an application of compu- tational methods in landscape architecture for the management of the complex system is needed. While computational methods have been extensively applied to buildings, less has been applied to trees. The goal of this paper is to investigate how the presence of trees affects human movement and find out if computational methods can be used for recommending tree planting patterns. We analysed the tree plant- ing patterns in renowned theme parks as an initial research categoriz- ing tree planting patterns, using an agent-based analysis for simula- tion, and comparing the results of the average agent counts in theme park plans without trees and those with trees. We noticed there was a clear distinction between tree planting pattern types and the change in agent counts supporting the qualitative theory in landscape architec- ture. The result of this research can guide theme park designers as well as urban park designers when deciding which tree planting pat- terns to implement for the purpose of controlling pedestrian move- ments.

summary This present work pretends to advance over the relationship between art and new technologies, as we un- derstand them in the project of CREAR/UNL "Lines on the river: a cartography of the variable". This multidisciplinary, collective creation will capture the landscape variability (identity feature of our islands) as an aesthetic fact. For a period of six months, the successive journeys on the river draw lines that connect points in the island territory that surrounds Alto Verde, and add georeferenced captures, satellite images, artistic records, and photographic observations. The narrative will of this cartography is finally translated in a multimedia product/installation that addresses this dynamic dimension increasing the opportunities for understanding the territory.

summary In usual robotic fabrication by 6-axis industrial robots such as KUKA, ABB, and other brands, the usual robot’s 4th, 5th, and 6th axis is exactly converged in one point. When this type robot (pieper) is doing movement commands, setting the degree of 4th axis close to zero is an ideal condition for motion stability, especially for putting device which connects to tool head on 4th axis arm part. In plastic melting or others print which not cares the rotation angle about the printing direction (the printing direction means the effector’s output normal direction vector, KUKA is X axis, ABB is Z axis), the optimization of 4th axis technology not only makes printing stable but also makes better quality for printing. The paper introduces a new algorithm to get the analytics solution. The algorithm is clearly explained by mathematics and geometry ways. At the end of the paper, a grasshopper custom plugin is provided, which contains this new algorithm, with this plugin, people can get the optimized target path plane more easily.

summary Prevention and management of epidemic is a protracted war. As large community in city, universities are key regions in the anti-epidemic period. However, the current epidemic prevention and management measures in many universities do not compatible with the spatial form and the characteristics of the population, likely to lead to waste of resources and cause conflicts. The research simulates campus environment by constructing GIS model, and simulates the behavior of campus crowd by ABM. Under the coupling effect of the two, the real-time calculation of the spread of epidemic in universities can be calculated in real-time, making up for the deficiency of GIS model which can only do static data analysis. On this basis, research takes South China University of Technology as an example and assumes three epidemic prevention management measures, i.e. closed-off management, zoning management and self prevention, respectively to simulate the spread of the epidemic, sum up the results of different management measures and provide certain suggestions.

title Managing a Trois: a study of a multi-user drawing tool in distributed design work

summary A multi-user drawing tool was used by participants in a distributed design exercise conducted in a multi-media working environment. The goal of the study was to explore how observations from our earlier studies of shared drawing in two-person design activity would hold up when three participants worked together. Additionally, the study provided opportunities to contrast video/audio connections with audio-only connections and to discover new behaviors that emerge in the use of new technologies. Participants successfully used the shared drawing system with no observed difficulties attributable to the addition of a third user. Audio-only connections appeared to adequately suppofi this work activity, but details of the participants' interactions in the exercise raised questions that deserve further study. Finally, observations suggest that drawing tools such as the one reported here may offer support for alternative forms of participation in collaborative work.
