summary In recent years the democratization of information and communication technologies (ICT) has become the greatest influence on the structure of CAAD education. While the content of the CAAD courses simply had to absorb the new technological possibilities, the structure of the courses and in particular their relationship to the rest of the curriculum has become the subject of speculation and experimentation. Integration of CAAD education in an architectural curriculum occurs either by (a) placing emphasis on designing in CAAD courses, or by (b)  integrating computing in design courses. Both approaches respond to the democratization of ICT by making design computing widely available and acceptable. Further improvement is possible if the student becomes the carrier of integration. This is based on the long-term amplification of two value systems. The first refers to personal cognition: rather than rewarding a student with the teacher's approval, educational goals should be translated into individual skills and knowledge. The second system addresses the values of the peer group: such groups support learning by comparison to other individuals and emerging communal characteristics, either as a result of competition or for reasons of assimilation.

summary This paper summarizes DIGITAL SKETCH, a workshop that took place over the course of two weeks in September 1998 at Designskolen Kolding, Denmark. DIGITAL SKETCH was an attempt to create a foundation course in design for the digital medium for students with strong visual design skills, but little to no computer experience. Teaching design on computers is commonly thought of as detailing the current version of the latest commercial software. As long as this is the case, design on computers will (quite rightfully) continue to get little respect from those designers using more traditional design methods. How can we find the "core" of this medium when faced with the constant onslaught of operating system upgrades and version 11.2 of software Y83? For DIGITAL SKETCH, we tried to demystify the process of controlling the computer. In this workshop we examined the meanings of the term "sketch" as it applies to the design process on the computer. Our hope was that by revealing some of the unique characteristics of the digital medium, we might develop new design processes in tune with this medium.

summary This paper presents a discussion about design pedagogy strategies focused on students’ processes rather than on their architectural objects. The hypothesis here is that critical and creative autonomy of students can be developed by the teaching of design thinking simultaneously with operative digital tools within design disciplines. An experiment was made in an introductory design discipline in a private Brazilian Architecture School and results show how students’ skills and knowledge about design grow faster when a digital creative culture is fostered within the design studio.

summary In intelligent epoch, automatic parameter design systems reduce the requirements of the skills needed to create objects. The creator only needs to select the most perceptual primitive form to automatically generate the data system that iterates to the most efficient solution. In this paper, a method of combining performance driven optimization with parametric design is proposed. The iterative evolution is under the control of performance loop and fabrication loop, which makes all the data provided by parametric design in a practical project available for exploring structural analysis and digital prefabrication. Related to the case of surface steel structure, parametric optimization is not limited to a set of shape types or design problems, it would be based on the generality and built-in characteristics of parametric modelling environment in the most convenient and flexible way. (Rolvink et al. 2010)And the given parameters would be fed back on geometric structure, performance indicators, and design variables, so that designers can easily and effectively coordinate and try different solutions. The system transforms the generated data into machine language so that the process including design, analysis, manufacturing, and construction can maintain the orthogonal persistence of the data.

summary Since March 2020, architecture schools in the world took significant decisions to abandon face-to-face learning; overnight, for security reasons, institutions around the world had to close their doors, confining professors, and students at home to teach online. Education before the Covid-19 pandemic was moving towards digitalization and online teaching, so the emergency exponentially detonated this phenomenon, bringing the Virtual Design Studio (Virtual Design Studio, VDS) as a practical-pedagogical option for distance education. summary This article deals with the use of the characteristics of fractal linear geometry and the different knowledge related to the application of its patterns in architectural elements, considering their compositional potentialities. For this, a theoretical and practical trajectory was developed, such as understanding the characteristics of fractal geometry and the existing software and methods for its reproduction. As a result, a parametric process was developed that allows to recreate fractal patterns in architectural elements, making it possible to identify the necessary steps for their elaboration, identifying the potentialities of their use and the skills necessary to reproduce similar parametric processes.

summary In our faculty a new CAAD group has been started recently after a period of virtual non-existence of CAAD education. The responsibility of the group is twofold: to provide students with a basic competence in CAAD, and to develop a high standard of experimental studio work combined with research. In our philosophy, we aim to reach the first goal by giving a wide offer of basic skills teaching in many different CAAD softwares. Building on that, we offer more specialised classes for advanced modelling and integrate skills with design work in the design studio. Due to limited means, and a small staff, we develop this program step by step. Our preliminary scope therefore, is very modest, and mostly limited to the first years of CAAD education in the Bachelor studies. In this paper we summarise our goals and preliminary results. We monitor the progression of our educational program with an enquiry that was distributed among 200 students. In that way we can assess student response to our efforts. We report on the findings from the enquiry and formulate improvements and possible directions for our teaching.

summary The general field this presentation will address is the integration of game mechanics within the design studio. The CAAD community has invested considerable energy into the insertion of games within education to teach specific skills or develop design behaviours. Building on some of this research we report on three years of studio teaching in undergraduate architectural studies. We propose that the outcomes of the design studio can benefit greatly from employing game mechanics to encourage constructive design behaviours within a student cohort. This body research flips the traditional location of game mechanic, shifting the motivations from the hands of the teacher to place the mechanic in the hand of the student. The research reports an increased level of engagement and collaboration and presents a body of work that extends beyond traditional expectations of the architectural design studio.

summary This paper gives an overview of several years of joint efforts of two European universities to develop a workflow that enables architects to use Low-Cost Virtual Reality (VR) based on Head-mounted display systems (HMD) in the architectural design process. The main goal was to find out if using VR in the design process can be beneficial for the design process, provide additional insights within reasonable effort and enable people working in the field with little scripting and programming experience to make use of these systems. To make this possible, we wanted to have some simple commands in the virtual environment to change the geometry of the design. In our workshops, students of architecture worked with students of civil engineering with a focus on computer science. The workflow is based on Unity as a software platform to prepare the geometry for the virtual world. We developed scripts for manipulating building parts such as walls and windows. The goal is that these scripts developed by the engineering students can be used with little adaption within the scripting skills of architects for new geometries. The project was already presented at several international conferences where we presented our experiments with self-developed low-tech interfaces and workflows using VR in the design process. With this paper, we give an overview of different VR platforms and summarise and finalise our findings based on the insights we gained with our joint student workshop.

summary In this paper it is argued that new digital techniques join together several skills; from CAD (Computer Aided Design), to CAE (Computer Aided Engineering), till CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing). That assemblage of methods involves a change in the way to achieve a project. The idea comes out as result of connected actions within software-hardware tools. According to this analysis the implementation of gradients (e.g. movement, time, direction) have a significant role in shaping a multi-disciplinary approach to design; supported by simulation as way to verify and control solutions. Such innovations can settle a new way to design, in terms of vocabulary, grammar and syntax? How can we develop useful tools to express the ""new visible"" of avant-garde techniques?

summary There is an absence of lightweight, sustainable construction materials in contemporary Haitian construction, a fact highlighted in the disproportionate loss of life in the 2010 Port-au-Prince earthquake. Between 2014 and 2017 the authors delivered a series of architectural design workshops in Haiti to raise awareness and develop design skills for bamboo using computational design tools. This paper provides a review of these workshops and a preliminary evaluation from surveys conducted with the course participants. Results showed architectural education had changed perceptions of bamboo and showed potential positive ecological impact due to subsequent reforestation activities instigated by participants. Weaknesses were in the lack of subsequent use of parametric modelling software. Bamboo material knowledge and a new architectural design methodology have been most relevant to their professional or academic work.
