title	Multi-Media Archive of Historical Architecture

summary	With funding from the European Union TEMPUS programme, four Universities have been working collaboratively to develop multi-media tools which help us understand the historical development of settlements and plan future developments which enhance rather than diminish the quality of the visual environment. The context taken for the collaboration was the historic region of Split on the Dalmatian stretch of the Adriatic coast. The Universities involved in the collaboration are the University of Strathclyde, the University of Rome (La Sapienza), the University Polytechnic of Catalunya and the University of Zagreb. The unique character of Split, catalogued by the University of Zagreb and the Split Institute of Urban Planning, owes much to the decision of the Emperor Deocletia to build his Palace on the coast south of Salona - which in the 4th century was the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. The Slav invasion of the 6th century drove citizens from Salonia south to Split to found a new city. After being dominated by the Byzantine Empire, Split then enjoyed free commune status , and subsequently became part of the Republic of Venice. After the fall of the Venetian Republic, the fortifications of the small city were demolished and the development of the modern city of Split began.

summary	The quality of the built environment depends critically on the concept of sustainability and in particular on designs which are energy efficient and environmentally friendly. This paper gives an account of the successful application of computer-based simulations of the physical environment made available to architects through an Energy Design Advisory Service and used parametrically within a research project carried out jointly with a design and build company. It goes on to indicate how emerging multi-media technology can be used to provide an explanation, particularly to those who are technically unsophisticated, of the complexity of the way in which design decisions impact upon the energy efficiency and environmental friendliness of buildings.

summary	The ABACUS Group has been active for some years in the use of computer graphics and multimedia to represent past, present and future buildings in both urban and rural settings. The three cities discussed during the presentation are Split, in former Yugoslavia - a graphical account of the development of Split from its origin in the Diocletian Palace of the Venetian Empire up to the present day; Edinburgh - a multimedia interface to a large-scale three dimensional computer model of Edinburgh Old Town; and Glasgow - Virtual City developments in the run up to the City of Architecture and Design celebrations in 1999. The presentation concludes with a report on the IMAGEA project - an international initiative to construct an Interactive Multimedia Archive of Great European Architecture.

summary	This paper describes and illustrates three very different uses of Information and Computing Technology (ICT) to represent, interpret and provide access to the city of Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city. The first application is a web-based three dimensional model of the city centre comprising the topography of the landform, the road and river networks and around 10,000 individual buildings. The model provides the interface to a number of different databases and search engines help the user explor the city. The second application is a recently completed CD-ROM illustrating, from an aerial perspective, the growth of the city from pre-historic times to the present. It comprises 230 images, 140,000 words of text, 5 video clips and 35 sound clips. The third application is to create a web-based massive archive of images (around 10,000) and historical events, personalities, objects and themes that can be updated and enlarged inexpensively and made available on-line to the widest possible audience.

summary	The great cities of all continents have a remarkable story to tell about their social, economic, industrial, cultural and architectural evolution. This paper gives an insight into an ambitious project to construct a 2000 year historical chronicle of Glasgow – the city at the heart of the Industrial Revolution in Northern Europe. The multimedia document which holds the chronicle draws from a huge range of paperbased resources and pulls together contributions from experts in many disparate fields. A significant characteristic of the chronicle is the use of “place” in the telling of the story. This has been achieved by sophisticated merging of artistic impressions, digital terrain modelling and aerial photography.

summary	ECAADE was established in 1982 with the intention, across Europe, of facilitating the adoption of the Information Technologies - particularly Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) - within the system of architectural education. The Association, in the 12 years of its existence, has grown in its membership (now close to 350) and in its importance. The annual conferences (Delft 82, Brussels 83, Helsinki 84, Rotterdam 85, Rome 86, Zurich 87, Aarhus 89, Budapest 90, Munich 91, Barcelona 92 and Eindhoven 93) now number 12 and this volume records the 70 or so contributions to the Conference held in Glasgow over the period 7-10 September 1994.The proceedings are arranged according to a number of themes. Theories and Ideas, Teaching and Learning, Visualisation, Multi-Media, Virtual Reality, Virtual Design Studios, Functional Analysis, Design Support Systems and Surveys of Activity. The Conference featured 'long presentations'; and 'short presentations'; the length of these presentations is reflected in the two main sections of this text. To preserve the spirit of conference communication and ensure the rapid dissemination of ideas in a fast grown community of polyglot Europeans, no changes to the papers, which were submitted in Apple Mac and/or PC diskettes, have been imposed; you see them as they were submitted and as the authors intended.

In common with all complex human functions the activity of design still understood; it involves the most rational and systematic proceses of human thought and also the most intuitive conjectural leaps within the mind.
