summary A radiatively cooled translucent building skin is developed for desert climates, constructed out of pockets of high heat-capacity liquids. The liquids are contained by a wavelength-selective membrane enclosure, which is transmissive in the infrared range of electromagnetic radiation but reflective in the shortwave range, and therefore prevents overheating from solar radiation and at the same time allows for passive cooling through exposure of its thermal mass to the desert sky. To assess the relationship between the form and performance of this envelope design, we develop a feedback loop between computational simulations, analytical models, and physical tests. We conduct a series of simulations and bench-scale experiments to determine the thermal behavior of the proposed skin and its cooling potential. Several materials are considered for their thermal storage capacity. Hydrogel cast into membrane enclosures is tested in real climate conditions. Slurry phase change materials (PCM) are also considered for their additional heat storage capacity. Challenges of membrane welding patterns and nonuniform expansion of the membrane due to the weight of the enclosed liquid are examined in both digital simulations and physical experiments. A workflow is proposed between the radiation analysis based on climate data, the formfinding simulations of the elastic membrane under the liquid weight, and the thermal storage capacity of the overall skin.

summary Buildings with complex shapes are increasingly being constructed using digital fabrication tools. However, many building components nevertheless require specialised skills for their assembly at the construction site, even if the manufacturing has been streamlined. In this study, by practising an agile design process that repeats the method of ‘Add-on the tool’ and ‘feedback on form and material, we devised a construction method that allows unskilled workers to be involved in the fabrication of pavilions and the creation of complex curved surfaces without requiring special skills, so long as the rules of assembly are determined. In this study, a method of achieving large curvatures using wire bending of Y-shaped wooden units made of 4-mm thick lauan veneer boards was proposed, in which large curvatures were used to design two-dimensionally curved surfaces with continuous wavy shapes. This method was also used to control the force applied to the wires by controlling their lengths. The free curved surface with the elastic bending of the plywood allowed a height of 2.3 m and a span of 6 m.

summary In this study, we revisit the concepts of abstraction and materialization with regards to the theoretical framework of new materialism. Underlining the changing relationship between design through abstraction (DtA) and design through materialization (DtM) in design history, we propose an integration of the two towards achieving design emergence. Additional to a theoretical framework, we provide a showcase through material experiments of plaster and abstractions in the form of shape computation. We discuss results as parameters for future digital implementations and potentials for design practice and education.

title Association Rule Mining to Assess User-generated Content in Digital Heritage: Participatory Content Making in ‘The Museum of Gamers’
source Gülen Çagdas, Mine Özkar, Leman F. Gül and Ethem Gürer (Eds.) Future Trajectories of Computation in Design [17th International Conference, CAAD Futures 2017, Proceedings / ISBN 978-975-561-482-3] Istanbul, Turkey, July 12-14, 2017, p. 413.
summary Association rule mining is one of several approaches in game design for discovering correlations among user-generated content items. This paper aims to aid the digital heritage field by analysing user preferences in interactive environments designed for participatory cultural heritage making. Textual and diagrammatic explication of the feedback mechanism introduces the universalization of the knowledge gained in this research that is supported with the outcome of a workshop which offered two gamified interactive environments. Three key pleasures of cyberspace in digital heritage are extended from immersion to meaningful experience and to transformation. User-generated content engenders meaningful correlations that help improve and evaluate digital heritage applications. Qualitative findings explicate the relationship of ‘The Museum of Gamers’ with the authenticity issue. This paper is among the first to investigate the association rule finding methods in relation to indexical authenticity in digital heritage.

title The Design of Decision Support Systems in Urban and Regional Planning
source Second Design and Decision Support Systems in Architecture & Urban Planning (Vaals, the Netherlands), August 15-19, 1994
summary Planning methodology over the years, has shifted from situations whereby planners think, plan and design for the people to one whereby both people and planners have become important components of the planning process. Consequently, the important urban planning methodology of the last two decades that utilized mathematical models in the planning process is fast becoming obsolete. The paper argues that model building should move to the creation of urban decision support systems for the planning process through the development of expert systems shells that interfaces existing planning models with the knowledge content of planning and planners. The expert system shells as the set of decision rules for determining how existing supply and demand relationships are applied for modelling land use and transportation would be responsible forguiding the development of appropriate geographical information systems, supporting land use and other models in a coordinated manner, for communicating with these other systems componentsand for guiding interactions between them and the user. Furthermore, decision support systems should be designed to bring the whole of the knowledge base to bear on a problem through a flexible and adaptive solution system that makes explicit use of both the analysts models and the decision makers expert knowledge. It is argued that this understanding leads to the development of three crucial issues for the design of decision support systems in urban and regional planning;namely the development of user friendly integrated urban land-use transportation models, the development of expert geographical information systems and the development of expert systemshells for many of the routine tasks planners deal with.

summary Unprecedented growth of hybrid settlements causes deterioration to the indoor environmental quality. Due to their narrow street-networks and fully packed urban fabric, lower floors are subjected to severe overshadow condition, which has adverse effects on the health of the inhabitants. This paper aims to investigate techniques to mitigate the under-lit indoor environment for a group of buildings with variable heights and orientations, with regard to the urban façades parameters. It reflects an intervention in an existing hybrid settlements, within hot-desert climate, to alter façades configurations for daylight optimization, and ultimately recover the lost indoor quality of users in such contexts.

title Associative Parametric Urbanism - A computational approach to parameterization of conceptual design phase
source Parametricism Vs. Materialism: Evolution of Digital Technologies for Development [8th ASCAAD Conference Proceedings ISBN 978-0-9955691-0-2] London (United Kingdom) 7-8 November 2016, pp. 207-216
summary Urban planning projects usually comprise a complex set of objectives that needs to be addressed by developing a number of proposals. This requires a lot of repetitive steps resulting in fewer and slowly-developed design alternatives. To address the limitations of the existing system, this research introduces the merge of associative parametric design tools with the conceptual design phase of urban planning process to propose a Parameterized Conceptual Design Phase. The developed Associative Algorithm within the proposed phase represents a computational approach that translates a site’s settings into local attractors to define urban fabric, and provide the designer with variations for optimal solutions. The Informal Settlement of Ezbet El Matar, Alexandria, is selected as the case study of this approach.

summary Thank you to the ACADIA team for extending the invitation to come here. For me, it's a really fantastic moment to reconnect with the ACADIA community. I've been dipping in and out of it since -- I think my first ACADIA was in Savannah, Georgia. Does anyone remember what year that was? 2001? 2002? I've been dipping in and out. And I really see this community as a model. You know, we could talk about the Mississippi and how it meanders, and passages of energy and matter and information begin to change. And the ACADIA community meanders across these different territories, but somehow it maintains its particular identity. And that identity, I think, is shrouded within ideals of sharing -- knowledge sharing -- and within a kind of creative design research, you know, rigor, which I find really fascinating.

title Liquid Stereotomy - the Tamandua Vault
source Werner, L and Koering, D (eds.), Anthropologic: Architecture and Fabrication in the cognitive age - Proceedings of the 38th eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, TU Berlin, Berlin, Germany, 16-18 September 2020, pp. 361-370
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2020.2.361
summary A renewed interest in stereotomy, narrowly entwined with digital technologies, has allowed for the recovery and proposal of new techniques and expressions in this building approach. A new classification scheme for stereotomy research allows for the framing of various aspects related to this discipline, including a newly developed fabrication system specially tailored for the wedge-shaped voussoirs. This fabrication system is based in a reusable mould which may assume an infinite number of geometries, avoiding the wasteful discarding of material found in subtractive strategies. The usage of a mould also allows for more sustainable materials to be employed, catering to current challenges. The strategies subject for demonstration in this project rely on various bottom-up approaches, which involve particle physic simulations such as a hanging model to compute an optimal stereo-funicular shape, or spring mechanisms to find optimal coplanar solutions. The proposed mechanisms work in a parametric algorithmically environment, able to handle dozens of uniquely different voussoirs at the same time. Together with the automatic translation to fabrication data, the proposed shape complexity would hardly be built with classic tools. The Tamandua Vault project has the purpose of exemplifying the possibilities of an updated stereotomy, while its design demonstrates current strategies that may be employed in the resolution of complex geometrical problems and bespoke fabrication of construction components for stereotomy.

summary The additive manufacturing process is gaining momentum in the construction industry with the rapid progression of large-scale 3D printed technologies. An established method of increasing the structural performance of concrete is by wrapping it with Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP). This paper proposes a novel additive process to fabricate a FRP formwork by dynamic layer winding of the FRP fabric with epoxy resin paired with an industrial scale robotic arm. A range of prototypes were fabricated to explore and study the fabrication parameters. Based on the systemic exploration, the limitations, the scope, and the feasibility of the proposed additive manufacturing method is studied for large scale customisable structural formworks.

title Semi-manual design support for increasing railwaystation catchment & sustainable traffic routing
source Timmermans, Harry (Ed.), Third Design and Decision Support Systems in Architecture and Urban Planning - Part two: Urban Planning Proceedings (Spa, Belgium), August 18-21, 1996
summary The shape ('configuration'), location and direction of the pattern of potential trips by foot or bicycle can help decision makers and designers:- the shape of such a pattern informs about the potential size of a traffic calming area(such as 30Km-zoning),- the location of such a pattern refers to the user-groups and specific destinations that a urban network should bring in safe reach for dictated groups,- the direction of such a pattern, together with shape and location, points to the best routing to raise the Sustainable Traffic Modal Split or to improve the reach of destinations like a railway-station.The patters can be generated from zip-code's of user-groups with obvious and daily destinations (school-children, rail-passengers). The next step confronts the theoretical pattern with the layout of streets and the traffic flow, mapping or listing (potential) confrontations between cars and the non-motorised modes, a basis for economical investment in traffic-safety.A design can 'model' the analysed pattern(s) to a economic, direct and safe base (cycle or pedestrian) network. title High tractive power wall-climbing robot
source Automation in Construction 4 (3) (1995) pp. 213-224
summary There are a lot of tasks in building construction and maintenance which demand either the carriage of heavy technological equipment along vertical and sloping surfaces and/or provision for force technological operations on such surfaces For example, surface cleaning or grinding by automatic equipment, the mounting of expansion bolts and anchors by drilling or by driving in. Additionally surface inspection by heavy measuring devices and the painting of big construction areas are difficult and expensive to perform manually. It is therefore expedient to apply climbing robots to automate these tractive power operations. The climbing robot was developed for such purposes. The design of the robot with increased load capacity and improved gripper system was carefully considered. The robot has a video camera for orientation and for the monitoring of processes. A sensor-based computer control system is used. This paper contains a brief overview of the technical parameters and experimental characteristics of the robot's transport module, control system with video camera unit, and the different schemes of the robot's application.

summary This paper presents a digital urban design game, ’Katakita’, as a tool for multiple non-expert participants to generate options for equitable transit-oriented development in Jakarta. It is set in the context of the ongoing MRT development and addresses the risk of transit-induced displacement for the lower income group. A preliminary study is done on the risk level of displacement based on historical data of displacement and vulnerable communities are then mapped out. The potential of using a game as a platform for discussion, evaluation and consensus-building is investigated in this paper. The game permits players to choose different roles to play and make design decisions by placing various building blocks in the multiplayer environment. Game scores such as equitability and profitability are tracked to encourage discussions and negotiations. Game session consisting of participants with relevant profiles has been conducted and results of which will be shared in this paper.

title From material to material with new abilities. Performative Skin: an unfinished product derived through the organizational logic as developed through research on ‘movement’
source SIGRADI 2015 [Proceedings of the 19th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - vol. 2 - ISBN: 978-85-8039-133-6] Florianópolis, SC, Brasil 23-27 November 2015, pp. 631-636.
summary This paper presents the process and products from research on ‘a movement behavior’, transforming the initial surface from one state to other states. The study developed an initial model of material organization inspired by nature: the adaptable exoskeleton of the armadillium vulgare. Through geometric analysis of functional variation in the exoskeleton’s unit shape, and physical model making, the underlying principle is translated into design & production rules. The generative model of ‘an adaptable segmented system’ is constructed through a geometric abstraction of the exoskeleton, achieving diverse functions such as variability in form, volume, porosity, flexibility and strength, through a distribution of ‘material geometry’ with the folding technique. The potentiality of this parametric physical model (based on simple systematicity) is questioned in relation to diverse situations that result in complex surface adaptations. This research shows the formulation of a design intention.

title Gamifying Origami: Rule-based Improvisation for Design Exploration
source Hybrid Spaces of the Metaverse - Architecture in the Age of the Metaverse: Opportunities and Potentials [10th ASCAAD Conference Proceedings] Debbieh (Lebanon) [Virtual Conference] 12-13 October 2022, pp. 595-608
summary Origami, which originated as a folding paper game in Japan, has turned into a source of learning and inspiration for design and engineering studies. Complex two-dimensional patterns of origami sustain visual rules of space transformation. So, this paper proposes to gamify origami to get users more involved in the design space exploration process. For the gamification of origami, the study alters the origami patterns in a 3D modular composition with rules, scoring, and rounds in a design context. Gamifying origami becomes a tool for a learning experience for first-year architecture students in the early design phases. Accordingly, this paper presents a gaming experience model based on origami for the foundation studios. This model consists of three main stages: start, rounds, and finish. The teaching of the model is the mereological relationship providing continuity concerning improvisations with visual rules. The reward is the model complexity, such as folding numbers, and regular or modified folding. The penalty is losing scores if the continuity is not maintained. The presented experience model is performed twice in the foundation studios. The former is for understanding how much preliminary knowledge is required for the first-year students to grasp and complete the game. The second is for testing the experience. The results of the study prove the role of visual reflection-on/in action by creating pauses during the origami design and the importance of sustaining the visual inference with transformations between individuals to experience form to formation, complexity, unity, and creativity in origami design. This study would contribute to the literature on experimental methods for design pedagogy.
