title Usability of contemporary tools for the computational design of architectural objects: Review, features evaluation and reflection

summary This article is an overview focused on functionality and usability of selected contemporary approaches for the computational floor plan generation of architectural objects. This article describes current solutions for generative architectural design and focuses on their usability from the point of view of architectural design practice. Recent research papers and prototypes, as well as the most important tools (selected computer-aided design and BIM software) for generative design from the architectural perspective, are described. The functionalities and level of usability of present-day software and prototypes are described. In addition, the descriptive review of the research prototypes architectural design outcomes is present. Furthermore, the survey among active architects regarding the usage of computational tools in the professional practice and possible guidelines for the development of such tools are present. This article summarises with the conclusion about the current state of generative floor plan design tools, the lack of fully functional and developed commercial tools of this type on the market and future directions for the development of generative floor plans tools.

summary The article presents the application of Hybrid Evolutionary and Greedy-based algorithms to the problem of Automated Floor Plan Generation. The described optimization issue is part of a wider domain of Computer-Aided Architectural Design. The article covers the extensive description of the representation domain model (architectural canonical guidelines, user design requirements and constraints) and the explanation of proposed approach: problem representation, genetic algorithm operators, and fitness function definition. The research experimental procedures are based on real-world data: the architectural design guidelines being the design constraints and five real-world functional programs introduced and proposed as benchmarks. The article summarizes the implementation of the proposed approach, compares the Hybrid Evolutionary Algorithm experimental results with the Greedy-based algorithm, and suggests possible extensions and future research directions.

summary Preservationists have an impressive array of digital tools to aid them in documentation and analysis of historic structures. The tools range from near photo-realistic renderings to demonstrate what a “restored” building might have looked like at one specifi c time in history to complex chemical analysis of paint chips and pigments to geographic information systems used as management tools for historic prop er ties. Computer-aided design / computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) is set of important digital aids in historic preservation efforts. This paper presents a case study of the use of CAD/CAM in support of an effort to restore a textile block house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. CAD/CAM methods are being employed to help produce a new mold so that new textile blocks can be manufactured that match the existing blocks. An existing textile block mold was digitally scanned, digitally mirrored and edited, and will be fabricated from an aluminum billet to replace a mold that no longer exists. Although seemingly a simple process and well within current technological abilities, the work proved substantially more challenging that initially imagined.

summary Craft knowledge, practices, and communities are vanishing due to globalization, automation, and techno-centric developments. This paper evaluates a computational design tool - the Bailey-Derek Grammar - for restoration of craftsmanship in the practice of wire-bending. By conducting workshops, interviews and surveys, document and artifact analyses, I examine the role of the Grammar in repairing the craft. The results shed light on how a computational description of tacit knowledge in the form of a shape grammar aids in restoring technical knowledge and skill in a craft. Results also indicate that the computational design tool promotes democratization of the craft by creating new forms of practice, and new roles for participation and engagement.

summary Active bending projects today employ highly specialized, complex computer software and machines for design, simulation, and materialization. At times, these projects lack a sensitivity to cultures limited in high-tech infrastructures but rich in low-tech knowledges. Situated Computations is an approach to computational design that grounds it in the social world by acknowledging historical, cultural, and material contexts of design and making, as well as the social and political structures that drive them. In this article, we ask, how can a Situated Computations approach to contemporary active bending broaden the design space and uplift low-tech cultural practices? To answer this question, we design and build "The Infinite Line"- an active bending pavilion that draws on the history, material practices, and knowledges in design in the Trinidad Carnival - for the 2019 International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS) exhibition in Barcelona, Spain. We conclude that Situated Computations provide an opportunity to integrate local knowledges, histories, design practices, and material behaviors as drivers in active bending approaches, so that structure, material practices, and cultural settings are considered concurrently.

summary In an effort to sustain and revitalize the dying craft of wire-bending, I present the development of three novel approaches: Digital Crafting, Computational Crafting, and Crafting Fabrication. Computation and digital technology were integrated with traditional wire-bending principles to design and fabricate artifacts. In this work, I present three artifacts resulting from these novel approaches, and analyze how these methods may be used in design education and practice. Our findings benefit the practice because it offers opportunities for teaching computational and traditional skills to older and younger generations through wire-bending.

title The question of access: Toward an equitable future of computational design

summary Digital fabrication and its cultivated spaces promise to break disciplinary boundaries and enable access to its technologies and computation for the broader public. This paper examines the trope of “access” in digital fabrication, design, and craft, and illustrates how it unfolds in these spaces and practices. An equitable future is one that builds on and creates space for multiple bodies, knowledges, and skills; allows perceptual interaction and corporeal engagement with people, materials, and tools; and employs technologies accessible to broad groups of society. By conducting comparative and transnational ethnographic studies at digital fabrication and crafting sites, and performing craft-centered computational design studies, we offer a critical description of what access looks like in an equitable future that includes digital fabrication. The study highlights the need to examine universal conceptions and study how they are operationalized in broader narratives and design pedagogy traditions.

summary The global request of energy politics and actions against climate change, reiterate the importance of promoting the nearly zero-energy buildings (nZEB), taking into account environmental habitability and comfort; therefore, this type of buildings has to include a process, design, and construction, intelligent. Accordingly, the present research shows a methodology for the design of almost zero-energy housing, by using BIM under an environment of extreme collaboration; evaluating energy consumption and active solar generation. Thus, the proposed methodology allows optimizing the processes related to design time, level of geometric development, and the application and evaluation of sustainability strategies, to achieve nearly zero-energy housing within the city Concepcion Chile.

But it is only possible to store and refer design proposals on the web. Its interface and operation are not well-optimized for architectural design activities. Then we consider that it’s necessary to develop the design information archive and visual interface to support digital design activities. The APEX and VPB system is the integrated design environment and we report the results of our experimental design studio using with it.

summary An alternative strategy is proposed for introducing the computer as a creative tool in the studio environment. It is suggested that computer graphic capabilities, focusing on color as an element of design, be incorporated into basic design studios. Techniques of color drawing on the computer are discussed, and computer modeling of color systems is recommended as a vehicle through which to introduce color theory. The effect of color on the perception of buildings is explored, illustrating how color selection can affect a building's line, form and spatial quality. These techniques enable students to develop an appreciation of the use of color in buildings, reinforcing their knowledge of basic design, and introducing them to graphic computing in a visually provocative manner. The proposal recognizes the importance of both color theory and graphic computers to an evolving architectural curriculum.

summary Modeling the formal idea has long been problematic in schools. Renaissance tools, however inspired by the invention of perspective, usually result in two-dimensional sketches. Cardboard and small pieces of wood occasionally become the three-dimensional media of first visualization in studios; modeling on the computer is a newer idea. This paper examines two experiments, one where design fundamentals and solid modeling are introduced in a common studio, the other where instruction is removed from the studio environment and made an adjunct elective. In the first case the course is an introduction to both design and computation, an electronic investigation of Paul Klee’s first principles: point, line, shape, form and space—adding, subtracting, rotating and multiplying objects using Beaux Arts principles to create the design. The result is architectural form-making that was not possible in the studio-past. The second case is a course which isolates computer instruction from the studio, making it a separate academic discipline. Fantasy projects then demonstrate computational principle, exploring pure form without burden of technical or social obligation that studio imposes; alternative methods are presented for introducing design computation to the architectural student.

summary Johannes Itten wrote in the 1920’s that seven distinct possibilities exist for the contrast of color: “Each (is) unique in character and artistic value, in visual, expressive and symbolic effect...together these constitute the fundamental resource of color design” Itten (1973). In either the digital world or in the world of painting, there has never been a more profound statement about color arrangement. Of Itten’s seven contrasts, the contrast of hue, value, and saturation, taken together have become a standard description of digital color today. As most projects reach the final stage of presentation, color selection becomes a possible paradigm for their development. It is customary to leave the selection of color to the end of a project — if time permits, then the colors are changed to make the project “appear better”, otherwise the selection of color is put in a pile of “good intentions” — overlooked. Proposed here is an alternative, a method of selecting color “up front”. Student projects are used to illustrate just how a building, or even a group of buildings may be better illustrated if one bases a presentation on a successful and understood work of art. The use of a painting as a source of color is proposed as a specific way of working. Most libraries contain an abundance of examples. The web, too, has many paintings; painters generally have more experience at putting colors together than architects and usually do not mind if their color ideas are borrowed, Done right, the result can be a happy merger of idea, emotion, and color, providing another paradigm for studying digital modeling.

summary The flow construct (Csikszentmihalyi 1977) has recently been proposed by Hoffman and Novak (1996) as essential to understanding consumer navigation behavior in online environments such as the World Wide Web. Previous researchers (e.g. Csikszentmihalyi 1990; Ghani, Supnick and Rooney 1991; Trevino and Webster 1992; Webster, Trevino and Ryan 1993) have noted that flow is a useful construct for describing more general human-computer interactions. Hoffman and Novak define flow as the state occurring during network navigation which is: 1) characterized by a seamless sequence of responses facilitated by machine interactivity, 2) intrinsically enjoyable, 3) accompanied by a loss of self-consciousness, and 4) selfreinforcing." To experience flow while engaged in an activity, consumers must perceive a balance between their skills and the challenges of the activity, and both their skills and challenges must be above a critical threshold. Hoffman and Novak (1996) propose that flow has a number of positive consequences from a marketing perspective, including increased consumer learning, exploratory behavior, and positive affect."
