summary This paper presents the didactical and research process of a pandemic-adapted digital fabrication, material-driven research master studio held at University of Montreal School of Architecture in early 2021 that concluded with the construction of a large-scale research pavilion assembled by the students with hand tools only. The paper focuses on the structure of the studio and how the research was re-oriented to permit material investigations using limited physical interaction between the participants, intermittent access to on-campus fabrication facilities, limited financial resources, and a cohort of students with near-zero computational design experience.

summary The paper presents a teaching experiment using the LOGO language to introduce geometric programming to architectural students with no a priory coding knowledge. Based on extreme simplicity as well as instant visual feedback, the language allows to introduce core programming concepts with little technicality. The extension of the language to a 3D space triggers designers interest and creativity while the introduction of a simple robotic drawing machine confront them with a simple fabrication context. These elements concur to develop a critical approach of the use of digital tools in the architectural design process, with the underlying aim to raise the students awareness on the implication of tooling on their design practice.

summary A design representation that incorporates descriptions at more than one level of abstraction is called a multilevel representation. This paper describes a multilevel representation which includes behavioral and structural levels of description, and a multilevel analysis aid, called timing abstraction, which extracts timing information from a structural design and adds it to a behavior level description. With this design aid, alternate implementations of the same behavior, generated using the CMU-DA synthesis software, can be compared using a behavior level simulator. The timing accuracy is that of the microcode implementation, while the speed of the simulation is that of a behavior level simulator

summary Digitally enhanced design processes and digital fabrication technologies have significantly expanded spatial and structural possibilities in architecture. Design and fabrication based on measurable input allow the digital processing of designs that are powerful in comparison to previously imagined spatial and material applications. However, this focus on data also limits designs by excluding social, economic, and ecological values that are related to cultural concerns central to architecture discourse and its built manifestations. Significantly, a sole focus on data that can be translated and processed results in the exclusion of information related to context from design considerations. Architectural discourse and practices must consider broad sets of references as guiding parameters; scientific developments that affect building methods and strategies therefore have to be associated to context-specific influences.While much is gained from engaging with contemporary design and fabrication technologies, architecture has to be conscious of references that exist outside of the numerical.

summary Practice, and the performance improvement that it engenders, has long been a major topic in psychology. In this paper, both experimental and theoretical approaches are employed in an investigation of the mechanisms underlying this improvement. On the experimental side, it is argued that a single law, the power of law of practice, adequately describes all of the practice data. On the theoretical side, a model of practice rooted in modern cognitive psychology, the chunking theory of learning, is formulated. The paper consists of (1) the presentation of a set of empirical practice curves; (2) mathematical investigations into the nature of power law functions; (3) evaluations of the ability of three different classes of functions to adequately model the empirical curves; (4) a discussion of the existing models of practice; (5) a presentation of the chunking theory of learning

summary As the first AAAI Presidential Address, this paper focuses on a basic substantive problem: the nature of knowledge and representation. There are ample indications that artificial intelligence is in need of substantial work in this area, e.g., a recent SIGART special issue on Knowledge Representation edited by Ron Brachman and Brian Smith. The paper proposes a theory of the nature of knowledge, namely, that there is another computer system level immediately above the symbol (or program) level. The nature of computer system levels is reviewed, the new level proposed, and its definition is treated in detail. Knowledge itself is the processing medium at this level and the principle of rationality plays a central role. Some consequences of the existence of the knowledge level and some relations to other fields are discussed

summary This work explores the transformation process from drawings to buildings by inserting unusual representation techniques between traditional orthographic drawings and actual buildings. The aim has been to explore the links and gaps between architecture as drawn and as built to gain a better understanding of the translation from idea to building. Computer modelling techniques enable designs to be 'built' at full scale and resolved in great detail. This type of representation was compared with built models, also at full scale, but using a mix of model making and real materials. At one school students interpreted actual working drawings from architects and at the other school, students worked from theoretical designs. By exploring the translation from idea to building using a range of representational interventions, this research creates a nexus between current issues of representation and design/construction research.

title The application of computer simulation techniques to the design and preservation of a national monument

summary The paper outlines a two-year research program where Radiance was used in the conversion of Empress Place, a national monument in Singapore, into an Asian Civilisation Museum. The paper describes how the research team fine-tune the modeling and software settings to cope with some of the contextual issues of design. Inaddition, the paper discusses how Radiance could be used to aid the design of the building. One of the more difficult tasks the researchers faced was to model and validate some of the daylighting control devices that are part of the existing features of the building. And to design new control devices that are architecturally consistent with the building. Working with the design team, options and strategies are studied. At the end, contrary to the original beliefs of the architect, and much to the liking of the curator, it has been demonstrated that, carefully designed, daylighting could be introduced into the gallery and that it will enhance the quality of the interior spaces. The building is currently under construction.

The experimental application of to daylighting investigation of the ACM further supports its capabilities as well as its accuracy. Using to study two daylighting control options (curtains and louvers), it can be found that louvers are more effective than curtains as daylighting control devices, and that the angle of the louvers have more effect than their reflectance on daylight penetration and distribution.

summary One of the many criticisms of early efforts in multimedia based teaching, learning and information systems is that most of the development is focused on constructing closed systems, and that once they are completed, altering their content, especially by third party users, is next to impossible. This leads to two problems. Firstly, in the current funding environment, it is almost impossible to sustain the system. Secondly, the system thereby developed is not very flexible and hence can be difficult to use. In Sheffield, we are trying to address this problem by constructing an open system. Using an interface-less data structuring system, an object oriented technique has been developed to separate the interface from the generic files thereby allowing unlimited posthumous alteration and adaptation. A prototype has been developed in Hypercard and in Director, but the beauty of the system is that it can be adapted to run on almost anything.
