summary This paper discusses the challenges of teaching architectural design theory in a world transformed by the digital revolution. Design is changing in dramatic ways and architecture is changing with it but a well-defined body of knowledge that can serve as a foundation for digital architectural design has – as yet – not been established. Relevant concepts, methods and precedents originate in many fields that are typically well beyond the scope of reading suggested to (or encountered by) students of architecture. This material is highly dynamic, often contradictory and, typically, of varying quality. Presenting this developing body of knowledge to students is a difficult challenge. A suitable pedagogical approach ought to reflect the heterogeneous and volatile nature of the contemporary design discourse enabling critical analysis of existing design practices, evidenced defence of one’s own creative work and successful communication with many heterogeneous stakeholders.

summary The most common reason for using Virtual Reality (VR) as a communication medium in urban planning and building design is to provide decision makers with access to a shared virtual space, which can facilitate communication and collaboration in order to make better decisions. However, there is a risk that judgmental biases arise within the virtual space. The displaying of the VR-models and itscontent could be one way of changing the settings for the visual access to the virtual space and could thus influence the outcome of the decision making process. For that reason it is important to have knowledge of how different settings in and around the VR-medium influence the experience of the shared visual space that the VR-medium strives to achieve. In this case the decision-making process, perceptions of space, and the cognition process of decoding of information in the visual space are important. This paper investigates how reference points influence judgments of a volume study of a building and furthermore what visual cues that are used for spatial reasoning about volumes. The results show that the initial visual information has a profound impact on the decision, even when this information lacks in validity.

title Supporting 3D city modelling, collaboration and maintenance through an open-source revision control system

summary The creation of a 3D city model is usually a very time-consuming process and due to the constant development of the city it also has to be updated accordingly. One of the problems with large 3D city models is that they contain a huge amount of data that has to be stored and processed when it is used. The storage and management of the models are therefore a very important issue. The management issue is often that many people are collaborating and working on the 3D city model at the same time and are located at physically different locations. In this paper we present an application for collaboration, maintenance and storing of 3D city models using an open-source subversion controlled system. It is a client server based with a file-based structure on the client side. This system is not as complex as the Oracle database and is not limited to a specific file format. We have integrated the revision control system into our VR application but it is also possible to have external revision control using a default file manager, such as Explorer in Microsoft Windows. The system has been tested in three different virtual reality projects, all applied to urban planning.

Key functions within the support system architecture include information management, error monitoring, and adaptive aiding. One of the central knowledge sources underlying this functionality is an operator model that involves a combination of algorithmic and symbolic models for assessing and predicting an operator's activities, awareness, intentions, resources, and performance. Functional block diagrams are presented for the overall architecture as well as the key elements within this architecture. A variety of difficult design issues are discussed, and ongoing efforts aimed at resolving these issues are noted.

summary There is an assumption that architecture can provide an evocative vision of an artificial environment using digitalized and wireless communication technology. It is a ideal based on perception of virtual space, where distance is minimized through the continual process of breaking barriers in none visible planes. It is domain of mind, in which the object becomes real by individual choice. It is conceived in a plane known as virtual space or cyber space. Marcos Novak describes it as "space created as habitat for our imagination". I approach the topic trying to establish a connection between the boundaries of virtual space and real space through architecture. These are the objectives of my inquiry: 1) To explore an architectural form in a media of non-concrete space. Space created by a negative space (empty space, residual space, loading space). 2) To define a new technology that marks the beginning of a real virtual environment accessible to everybody. Proposing the idea of socialization through the architecture and revitalizing negative spaces comprehended as valuable public places. 3) Identification and representation of sources that make possible telecommunication technology in an enclosed space. Prototype of a new communicational platform re-interpreted by cyber space, digital images, high-speed data, mobile Internet and application based on Intranets, extranets and mobile multimedia.

The intentions were integrate theoretical knowledge on the space and digital three-dimensional exercises. summary Design of a new artifact begins with incomplete knowledge about the final product and the design evolves as it progresses from the conceptual design stage to a moredetailed design. In this paper, an effort has been made to give a structural framework, through a set of generic definitions, to product specification, functionalrepresentation, artifact representation, artifact behavior and tolerance representation. A design synthesis process has been proposed for evolution of a product from theproduct specification. The proposed design synthesis method is a mapping from the functional requirements to artifacts, with multi-stage constrained optimization duringstages of design evolution. Provisions have been kept to augment and/or modify the product specification and domain knowledge during stages of development to guidethe design process. The effectiveness of the proposed design process has been illustrated with a simple design example based on a sample artifact library. An overalldesign scheme has been presented.

summary The idea of ‘city’ has now surpassed its physical concept. The emergence of the Internet and the growing development of information and communication technologies (ICT) have changed the behaviour of our society in the past decade and revolutionised the traditional ways of representing space. The classic 2D (floor plans, sections and elevations) and 3D representations have been gradually replaced by 3D digital models that can reproduce buildings and places in a virtual environment.3D digital models are tools that enable a wide range of applications in urban planning and management, especially in architectural and data documentation where they allow the analysis of theoretical scenarios such as: 1) representation of the past, considering the procedures needed to restore the heritage; 2) visualisation of the present, to enable dissemination and communication of the city as it is; and, 3) simulation of the future, with the model being used to visualise and experiment with architectural objects, even those at a design stage. The main contribution of this work is to present an urban application developed into a GeoBIM tool, ESRI City Engine Software (CE), that integrates GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and BIM (Building Information Modelling) concepts. Finally, to enhance its potential, three spatial analyses were conducted.

summary Regardless of its size or scope, the preparation of an Architectural Project, is perfectly well defined. The first phase of conception, drawn up according to the statement of intentions provided by the Owner of the Work (preliminary Program), usually is the only one in the whole process which draws on the abilities of the Author of the Project. Thus, with the aim of speeding up this process, an experimental model which can be used as a tool for negotiation between stakeholders in a project of Architecture has been developed. This implies giving priority to the graphic aspects of the model, such as visualisation, texturing, manipulation and automatic data updating. What is left to be developed is the desire to associate sensorial information to these scenic models – sound, smell and time – and to study the means of converting the results of this informal communication into documents that may come to be used in the subsequent phases of the Architectural Project.

It also shows a synthesis of how kinesiograms are used in several different media. The scope of this research includes education, advertising, signals, art, etc. Although globally there is an increased impact of this technology, in our country it is not yet widely available.

summary Word processing is universally successful as a computer application whereas computer-aided design is not. What can we learn from word processing? It tells us that, to be successful, an entry-level CAD system should be basic and focus mainly on drawing and manipulation of drawings rather than on sophisticated operations and automation, it should be simple, easy to use and moderate in cost. In architectural education, it should be used in the early stages of design to enhance design quality and design learning. To do this, we need to understand the characteristics of this new drawing and design medium. Software needs to be thoroughly learned in advance of studio use, and computer-based studio projects should take a computational view of design to enhance the effective use of computers in learning to design.

summary The article discusses computer techniques used to analyse a cityscape based on 3D models. The study focuses on the application of the Visual Protection Surface (VPS) method which enables to analyse the absorption capacity of a city as regards new investment while bearing in mind the goal of preserving a set of strategic views. The outcome of the process is a surface or a map which determines the maximum height of buildings. The goal of the study is to adjust VPS input to apply the method in urban planning. Analyses focused on the following VPS parameters: a) accuracy of 3D model, b) density of strategic views, and c) VPS resolution. They have been carried out based on the case study of Gdansk, Poland. The study shows which of the parameters are crucial for the quality of the outcome and time of the computation process. All simulations presented in the article have been developed based on the C++ program prepared by author.

summary The article presents the application of the Visual Protection Surface (VPS) method in protecting waterfront panoramas. The digital analysis of visual impact, which is most frequently used in urban planning, assesses the impact of new investment on the cityscape. The study presented in the article is based on a reverse approach -determining the maximum height of buildings so new facilities do not distort protected vistas in a city, vistas which are crucial for the preservation of the city's cultural identity and spatial identification. The assessment of the application is based on a case study of Gdañsk, Poland, where a 3D LiDAR model was used. The study involved the use of software developed by the author (C++). It also analyzed VPS input parameters. Conclusions can be used to assess and verify analysis findings with different software (GIS/CAD). The article shows the potential application of the VPS method in urban planning.

summary The research analyses the possibility of separating tall greenery as a spatial component of the city in a 3D model based on LiDAR data. This applies in particular to Digital Surface Models (DSMs). The paper presents methods to generate theoretical DSMs of a city without tall greenery and tall greenery only as a component extracted from the 3D model. The first method is based on the use of GIS data, including 2D building outlines. The second method requires additional manual contouring of tall greenery. Both methods have been applied by the author in the planning practice in several cities in Europe. Results of the research are discussed in the article based on the example of Szczecin, Poland. It includes the preparation process, visualisations of theoretical DSM models (buildings without tall greenery and tall greenery only) and their application in urban analyses concerning e.g. protection and development of the cityscape. All simulations have been performed using C++ software developed by the author.
