summary Grammar formalisms for design come in a large variety, requiring different representations of the entities being generated, and different interpretative mechanisms for this generation. Most examples of shape grammars rely on labeled shapes, a combination of line segments and labeled points. Color grammars extend the shape grammar formalism to allow for a variety of qualitative aspects of design, such as color, to be integrated in the rules of a shape grammar. Sortal grammars consider a compositional approach to the representational structures underlying (augmented) shape grammars, allowing for a variety of grammar formalism to be defi ned and explored. In this paper, we revisit and explore an exemplar shape grammar from literature to illustrate the use of different grammar formalisms and consider the implementation of rule application within a sortal grammar interpreter.

summary Description grammars represent a formalism for generating verbal descriptions of designs, used in conjunction with shape grammars. A description grammar constitutes a set of description rules that define a language of descriptions. A description grammar interpreter implements the mechanisms to interpret descriptions and description rules, apply description rules to descriptions to derive new descriptions, and generate the members of the corresponding language of descriptions. In this paper, we argue the need for the development of a (general) description grammar interpreter, offer a formal notation for descriptions and description rules, describe the representation and implementation of descriptions and description rules, and provide an example implemented using the description grammar interpreter.

summary A triple graph grammar approach is adopted as a formal framework for semantic and geometric conversion of IFC models into CityGML Level of Detail 3/4 building models. The triple graph grammar approach supports a semantic mapping from IFC to CityGML, the generation of conversion routines from this mapping, and an incremental approach to achieving a "complete and near-lossless" mapping. The objective of this approach is the development of a methodology and algorithms to automate the conversion of Building Information Models into CityGML building models, capturing both geometric and semantic information as available in the BIM models, in order to create semantically enriched 3D city models that include both exterior and interior structures.

summary Daylighting is an important part of designing sustainably. Daylighting is the use of natural light for primary interior illumination. This reduces our need for artificial light within the space, thus reducing internal heat gain and energy use. Direct sunlight, once it enters the building, is not only light but heat, and that additional heat will need to be taken into account in your energy analysis." While Autodesk Revit Architecture 2010 (ARA) itself cannot perform the actual analysis, there are some ways to do that. This papper focuses on the study of parametric modeling using a BIM tool for daylighting analysis. This paper presents the first part of the building method of LUME, a plug-in maked whit C# programming language in Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 and ARA Software Developer Kit (SDK) package. The script accepts as its input a standard three dimensional model of building opening and his position on space.

summary This paper presents the process behind the design of an interactive Media Cascade in the historic city of Congonhas, Minas Gerais, Brazil. It first introduces the physical and social context of the rehabilitation of the city, in which the cascade, called Ituita, was proposed. Different to the ephemeral character of most urban interactive installations, Ituita intends to become a permanent reference for the citizens, being as much as a playful interface for interaction as a place for raising and putting in evidence issues related to the city. This paper, thus, presents the three different levels of interaction—reactive, pro-active and dialogical—proposed in the interface designed for Ituita. Then, it discusses the possible urban benefi t of such a proposal and concludes with assessments of both technological and social slant.

summary In our national territory the rescue of the existing building property is a very important problem. For that reason, starting front the presupposition that the existing buildings, restoration finds its real achievement by means of technological and installing interventions strictly connected with the energy costs and consumptions, this study sets as a planning method on various degrees to analyze, single out and propose the possible solutions based on qualitative and quantitative researches into the thermo-physical behaviour of the above-mentioned buildings. From a research done into the principal building properties related with the different national areas we can single out significant morphological samples and typical technological structures. This first analytical study allows the singling out of significant building models on which it's possible to value the thermal behaviour and possible subsequent restoring interventions by applying computerized mathematical models or by operating diagrams deduced from them. First of all, these mathematical models for simulation allow a valuation of the main thermal parameters (dispersion both in absolute value and in volumetric factor, medium thermal transmittance (U value) of geometrical models deduced from the typical above - mentioned cases.

title xWORLDS, the implementation of a three-dimensional collaborative sketch tool within the context of a third year design course

summary This work is the result of a postgraduate thesis done at the chair for Architecture and CAAD at the ETH in Zurich Switzerland. It proposes a prototype for a three-dimensional modelling tool in a networked environment. The work is composed of two distinct parts. (1) A modeling tool to create three-dimensional objects in an intuitive and interactive manner. (2) A database component to store and retrieve the objects. This modeller has been implemented for the first time in a design course, where students where using the modeller to sketch and interact within a large group to formulate aspects of their design. The Paper focuses on the modeller and on the experience from a one week workshop.1. Modelling Tool. The modeling tool operates in two different modes: (A). Composing cubic forms within a limited cubic space. (B). Deforming the composition of boxes by means of their interaction with a separate volume. For the composition of cubes, the user has to drag a cube with the mouse to continue placing cubes in space. Furthermore, he can move and delete the placed cubes. Simple and complex objects can be created this way, in an easy and intuitive manner. For the second mode, the forms are generated by intersecting a volume with an object created previously in the first mode. The volume can be scaled and moved. The part of the existing object located outside the volume remains unchanged, while the part that lies inside it is transformed in the same way as the volume. Complex forms can be created in this way with simple transformations. 2. Database Storage and Retrieval.The created objects can be stored in a database. Other users can access the objects stored in the database and continue working on them in the same modeling environment. There are two ways to interact with objects from the database. On one side it is possible to substitute the composition of cubes, and keep the distorted framestructure of the currently active object unchanged. On the other side it is possible to initiate a morphing process between the currently active framestructure and the framestructure of an object from the database. This process can be stopped at any time. It is always possible to switch back in the modeling modus and continue work on the object.3. Workshop at the the School of Design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.A Group of over 100 students were using the tool in a second year design course. The tool has been implemented as part of a workshop in the second half of the design studio. The workshop lasted for one week in which a collective dataset of over 1000 models has been created by the students. Afterwards, a possibility was given to the students to retrieve models from the database and to process them in different software packages or have them physically built by a 3D printer, and then continue working on the physical model.

summary The process of overcoming the digital divide has led to the formation of common interest groups. Network communication has become not only a mean, but also a conditioning for the horizontal structure of groups that are also dedicated to transforming urban spaces. Known as processes of bottom-up urbanism, these groups add virtual layers to urban space, and acting in a cybrid way they make inseparable the actions that occur on the virtual or material environment. This research is dedicated to understanding the dynamics of communication in a Facebook group created in one of these bottom-up urbanism processes.

summary The paper describes the application of a standardised teaching method of digital fabrication in architecture. The introduction formulates a pedagogical problem and addresses both methodological and praxiological aspects of the teaching process based on design research. Next, the process is illustrated with a description of three digital fabrication courses where the teaching method was used. The initial implementation took place in 2016 at Faculty of Architecture at Warsaw University of Technology. The author outlines the translation of theoretical work frame into teaching method, presents the course outcomes and provides a critical analysis of results. In 2017, a revised teaching method has been used two times, again at Faculty of Architecture at WUT and at Monash Art Design and Architecture. Both courses are described in a way analogous to the initial exploration. In consequence, the results of the same course conducted in different teaching, conditions are compared. In conclusion, the developed method is evaluated in relation to teaching outcomes.

summary This article presents preliminary results of a research under development at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul on BIM notebooks. It aims to study notebooks produced by Brazilian government agencies to identify characteristics and focuses of the content presented. In this step, notebooks from the states of Santa Catarina (2018), Paraná (2018) and the Federal District (2020) were mapped. Such notebooks were prepared from 2018 and define guidelines for contracting and elaborating public building projects developed based on the BIM methodology in order to satisfactorily meet the needs of the States within the scope of the Executive Branch in relation to public building projects developed in BIM . They are also used as annexes in public notices, for contracting projects, works and services developed in BIM.

summary This article presents the results of a study that is being carried out at the University of Caxias do Sul, Brazil. The goal of the study is to publicize a collection of the modern architecture in southern Brazil through interactive media on a web portal. This study presents the development of a digital media to publicize a collection composed of single - family houses, for a total of two - hundred - and - fifteen residences that are organized by city and decade, from 1930 to 1970. The buildings of each decade are analyzed in terms of their language and compositional features. It also presents brief biographies of the architects, engineers and builders involved in the construction.

title A product modeling approach to building knowledge integration

summary Knowledge informatics is still playing only a minor role in the design process of buildings and civil engineering efforts, particularly in the inception stage. The primary reason that most knowledge tools are not well integrated into the process is that most tend to be based on stand alone expert system technology. Improving the re-use of existing knowledge is required to increase industry performance. A solution could be a new generation of integrated knowledge systems. One problem that must be addressed is how to cope with the conflicting requirements of each particular subsystem when each is optimized for its own knowledge domain. No optimum solution exists that is able to simultaneously optimize each subsystem for a total solution. This paper discusses an approach to building knowledge integration that attempts to address these shortcomings through the use of combined product model and meta-knowledge approach.

summary Hospitals are one of the most complex building types. Each is comprised of a wide range of service areas and functional spaces. Spatial relationships comprise one of the most critical design criteria, to be considered early-on in the master planning stage. Proper adjacency contributes to shorter travel distances, better wayfinding, improved patient care, higher satisfaction, and reduced overall cost. However, there is a lack of research on the automatic generation of design solutions that can be applied to real-world hospital master planning projects. Moreover, given the complexity of hospital design, an optimization tool is needed that is capable of evaluating both machine- and human-generated solutions. This study proposes a rating system for evaluating existing plans and proposed designs in hospital master planning, and explores optimal design solutions through rapid computational simulations. The first stage of this work presents interviews with senior professionals in the industry to explore best practices regarding spatial relationships in hospital planning. The second stage describes an automatic analysis tool for ranking the design options generated by healthcare planners and examining optimal design solutions that feature the best spatial adjacencies. This tool was employed in a recent master planning project with over fifty programming spaces, in order to test its validity.

title Creating and Improving a Closed Loop: Design Optimization and Knowledge Discovery in Architecture

summary This paper presents computational methods for creating and improving a closed loop of design optimization and knowledge discovery in architecture. It first introduces a design knowledge-assisted optimization improvement method with the technique - offline simulation - to reduce the computing time and improve the efficiency of the design optimization process utilizing architectural domain knowledge. It then describes a new design knowledge discovery system where design knowledge can be discovered from optimization through an automatic data mining approach. The discovered knowledge has the potential to further help improve the efficiency of the optimization method, thus forming a closed loop of improving optimization and knowledge discovery. The demonstration and validation of both methods are presented in the context of a case study with parametric form-finding for a nursing unit design with two design objectives: minimizing the nurses’ travel distance and maximizing daylighting performance in patient rooms.

summary This paper describes an ongoing research project to establish a thermal comfort based walkway performance analysis that embodies the effect of context and climate. This study combines the survey data (perceived comfort) from walkway users and thermal sensor data (actual thermal comfort) collected at various covered walkways across Singapore. One contribution is the combination of subjective and objective comfort measurements in a tropical context . We work with descriptive statistical measures to help better understand the ranges of thermal comfort offered by covered walkways. This research highlighted that the comfort offered by current walkways were identified to have no significance, and the walkways are unable to reduce the heat stress into the moderate range at all times of the day. A key contribution of this research project identified missing datasets and help improve our data collection methodology for the future expansion dataset that employ machine learning.

summary This article explores the representation of historical transformations in the Square of XV de Novembro, one of Rio de Janeiro's oldest and historically significant locations. A geometric modeling methodology is employed to visually represent the profound alterations in the landscape over time, selecting pivotal periods to offer a detailed spatial perception and virtually reconstruct lost landmarks. The utilization of game engines facilitates a first-person perspective of the model, which could further enhance the immersion. Moreover, this approach enables new interpretations of existing historical documents while also providing new material about Brazil’s and Rio de Janeiro’s history. To this end, the research combines historical simulation with an interpretative investigation, utilizing diverse historical materials. The chosen methodology provides a multifaceted understanding of the location's evolution and its significance in Brazil's history.

summary The demand for sustainable building materials is currently a major concern of society. It is known that the traditional construction industry requires a high consumption of inorganic materials, which is associated with the excessive production of waste. Thus, this article intends to demonstrate the possibility of using the Additive Manufacturing (AM) technique Paste Extrusion Modeling (PEM) in the production of reusable, biodegradable and recyclable construction systems, using a combination of different natural materials that have created multiple pastes with different additives.Cellulose is a natural material - biodegradable, recyclable and low cost - and its implementation aims to change some aspects of the current state of the construction sector and can have a real impact on the exploration of innovative solutions and more sustainable alternative building systems. The integration of AM techniques, PEM method, supported by computational modelling tools, will allow the definition of a building system and its components. Depending on the material used - natural materials or biomaterials - the constraints and limitations of AM will be considered.
