title Improving the Overhang of 3D-printed Concrete Shells by Wrinkle Structures

summary The labour shortage is impacting the construction industry globally, and 3D concrete printing (3DCP) technology is considered a solution for such an issue by using robots instead of manpower in building construction. However, due to the unstable mechanical properties of the fresh-state concrete, current 3DCP building forms exclude a massive number of options, one of them being the overhang shape. Therefore, this paper introduces bionic wrinkles to improve the overhang of 3DCP shell prototypes and demonstrates the feasibility of this idea through three groups of buckling simulations. This study proves that surface wrinkles can improve the in-process mechanical properties as well as the overhang capacity of shell structures. In the best scenario, the original design which only reached 30° overhang can be promoted to 77.5°. Besides, the applications of all wrinkle types are robust.

summary Structural form design could be considered as a bi-objective problem which should satisfy both the efficiency criterion of structural engineering and the aesthetic criteria of architects. This research tries to introduce Interactive Genetic Algorithm (IGA) in the problem of structural form design. It combines the structural analysis performed by computer and aesthetic evaluation by architects into a bi-objective IGA process, in order to generate structural forms which are preferred by the architects and at the same time structurally optimal. In this research, the structure generated consists of two kinds of members, truss and beam. Generation and evolution of structure is based on a triangular element composed of several members. Through experiment of the IGA structural form design system, it is found the structure forms are optimized as the evolutionary process proceeds, and the aesthetic preference of architect is also transferred from generation to generation. It is also revealed that the two criteria have mutual restrictions, which resulted in compromised results.

title Localization and comparison of two free-form surfaces

summary Comparison of two free-form surfaces based on discrete data points is of paramount importance for reverse engineering. It can be used to assess the accuracy of the reconstructed surfaces and to quantify thedifference between two such surfaces. The entire process involves three main steps: data acquisition, 3D feature localization and quantitative comparison. This paper presents models and algorithms for 3D featurelocalization and quantitative comparison. Complex free-form surfaces are represented by bicubic parametric spline surfaces using discrete points. A simple yet effective pseudoinverse algorithm was developed andimplemented for localization. It consists of two iterative operations, namely, constructing a pseudo transformation matrix and point matching. A computing algorithm was developed to compare two such surfacesusing optimization techniques. Since this approach does not involve solving non-linear equations for the parameters of positions and orientations, it is fast and robust. The algorithm was implemented and testedwith several examples. It is effective and can be used in industry for sculptured surface comparison.

summary Design professionals in the construction industry widely use the term “parametric”. Despite this there is a paucity of applied guidelines for developing parametric models. It is possible to attend workshops and learn the mechanics of a specific applications and access online repositories of ‘design patterns’, but the cognitive process of application in practice has received little recent attention. Analysis and experience of practice indicates that acquisition of new knowledge and capture of existing knowledge are the basis for all parametric tasks. This paper exposes a deeper understanding of the role of the parametric designer and proposes an applied strategic framework.

title Oeresund Bridge. Temperature and cracking control of the deck slab concrete at early ages

summary High performance features are required of the concrete for the deck slab of the bridge over Öresund Straight between Denmark and Sweden and, among them, great durability. To guarantee this, it is necessary to assure, in advance, and control during the construction of the deck slabs, that the maximum temperatures and the traction stresses in the deck slab will not be greater than the allowable values, and to control these factors during the construction process. Before beginning construction, the deck slab was calculated using a program of finite elements that considers the heat generated, the shrinkage and creep of the concrete and the ambient conditions. To control the temperature during construction, temperature sensors are installed in various sections of each of the 49 deck spans and the temperatures produced during the first days of hardening are recorded on a computer. The temperatures of the components are also measured in order to estimate the temperature of the fresh concrete.

summary Video games as a medium for entertainment have evolved overtime to become impactful and relevant in current culture, industry, and education. Although architecture is a cultural commodity that has been present since the dawn of civilization, within the span of less than 50 years, video games have had an incredible impact on architectural praxis. This paper posits a dyadic relationship between computer games and architecture, exploring the influences video game design attributes have had on nascent designers within the industry. This paper documents a case study examining architectural students' studio projects from Canada's largest architecture program, identifying the influences of video games that emerge within their designs. The paper discusses the effect video games have made on architectural education through passively impacting current pedagogical practice, design tendencies, and inevitably molding the architects of the future.

title Establishing design directions for complex architectural projects: a decision support strategy

summary The paper seeks to identify characteristics of the design decision-making strategy implicit in the first placed design submissions for three significant architectural competitions: the Sydney Opera House competition, and two recent design competitions for university buildings in New Zealand. Cohn Rowe's (1982) characterisation of the design process is adopted as a basis for the analysis of these case studies. Rowe's fertile analogy between design and (criminal) detection is first outlined, then brought to bear on the case studies. By means of a comparison between the successful and selected unsuccessful design submissions in each case, aspects of Rowe's characterisation of the design process are confirmed. On the basis of this analysis several common features of the competition-winning submissions, and their implicit decision-making processes, are identified. The first of these features relates to establishing project or programmatic requirements and the prioritizing of these. The second concerns the role of design parameters or requirements that appear as conflicting or contradictory, in the development of a design direction and in innovative design outcomes. The third concerns the process of simultaneous consideration given by the designer to both project parameters or requirements, and to design solution possibilities - a process described by Rowe as "dialectical interanimation".

An algorithm is given for superposing N quad trees in time proportional to the total number of nodes in the trees. Warnock-type algorithms are then presented for building the quad tree for the picture of the boundary of a polygon, and for coloring the interior of such a polygon. These algorithms take O(v + p + q) time, where v is the number of polygon vertices, p is the polygon perimeter, and q is a resolution parameter. When the resolution q is fixed, these algorithms are asymptotically optimal

summary In continuation of our previous research (Hussein, et al., 2017), this paper examines the kinetic transformable spatial-bar structures that can alter their forms from any free-form geometry to another, which can be named as Free-form transformable structures (FFTS). Since 1994, some precedents have been proposed FFTS for many applications such as controlling solar gain, providing interactive kinetic forms, and control the users' movement within architectural/urban spaces. This research includes a comparative analysis and a critical review of eight FFTS precedents, which revealed some design and technical considerations, issues, and design and evaluation challenges due to the FFTS ability to deliver infinite unpredictable form variations. Additionally, this research presents our novel algorithmic framework to design and evaluate the infinite form variations of FFTS and an actuated prototype that achieved the required movement. The findings of this study revealed some significant design and technical challenges and limitations that require further research work.

summary Traditional Korean architecture provides privacy through a proper balance of openness and enclosure through courtyard gardens. However, it is difficult to analyse privacy quantitatively in a three-dimensional space. The analysis of visual privacy is a significant issue in resolving conflicts and enhancing comfort. This paper develops a computational algorithm for simulating and measuring privacy on the concept of prospect and refuge: a design strategy for psychological wellbeing. In order to visualize privacy, the prospect area ratio (PAR) and refuge area ratio (RAR) are used in 3D visual simulations. PAR and RAR calculate the area ratio of the hiding space or the visible space in the images collected from the 3D model. In addition, parametric algorithms are proposed to calculate PAR/RAR automatically. Finally, this research demonstrates a case study of Gyeongbokgung, one of the five palace buildings in Korea, to show methods and processes of the quantitative analysis of visual privacy. The outcome of this paper contributes to quantitative confirmation of spatial characteristics that clearly distinguish between public space and private space of Gyeongbokgung. The proposed method also shows great potentials to quickly obtain the numeric value of privacy.

summary This research investigates the spatial information retrieval in architecture focused on constructingefficient metadata that is crucial for data retrieval. Generally speaking, metadata is ‘structured dataabout data’ to describe the resources especially in a digital method. In this research, metadata is a sortof data object to be used in searching spatial information, such as describing a raw spatial data objectnot only as attribute data but also as content, structurally and semantically. There are two issues thatmotivate this research; 1) the materialization of the intangible space as a data object, and 2) thecontent-based information retrieval. In the viewpoint of content-based retrieval, we analyze spatialinformation on the apartment unit floor plan common in Korea. Then we extract the metadata items in astructured manner. To manage the items efficiently, we develop a data model for spatial informationaccording to the concept of “Structured Floor Plan”. For exploiting the metadata, this research showsseveral possibilities of query operations to present a set of sample queries about L-D-K(Living room -Dining room – Kitchen). Implementation of the prototype system is divided into three parts: 1) amodeling module, Vitruvis; 2) an indexing module, SpaceCore; and 3) a browsing module.

summary Recently, The South Korean national government and local governments in Korea are pursuing national R & D tasks that can be used in the design stage to expand the BIM technology to the public environment of the future city, such as the construction of the IT integrated architecture design environment and the convenient construction administrative system environment. Among these R & D researches, various studies are continuing to provide more convenient and accurate architectural services at the licensing stage in order to promote the introduction and practical use of BIM in the Korean construction industry. Typical examples are BIM-based building design quality evaluation and building performance review technology development. Therefore, the goal of this study is to introduce the case of developing the performance review interface according to the regulation and required performance criterion of BIM model using KBIMS and analyze the possibility of evaluating building design quality by applying this to a practical project.

summary The ability to recognize properties and characteristics unforeseen in the early stage of design, namely shape emergence, is considered one of vital aspects of human visual perception in creative thinking. This study aims at developing a design model by using an extended theory of shape emergence, mutation shape emergence which we call. The first part of this paper describes the definition of mutational emergent shapes clearly. In the second part, possibility of discovering mutational emergent shapes will be explored through protocol analysis. On the basis of the results of these efforts, we will examine closely the cognitive mechanism to discover mutational emergent shapes. In the last stage, based on our results we propose a design model for understanding the cognitive process implications for training architects.

summary This paper explores the use of Albizia Lebbeck wood as a hygromorphic programmable material in adaptive architectural building skins. Several studies have investigated the use of hygromorphic behavior in developing adaptive architectural façades. Very few however have attempted to explore and evaluate the use of natural local materials in their specific climatic and cultural context, especially in the Arab World. Multiple experiments and simulations were conducted on Albizia Lebbeck wood samples as a material widely abundant in Egypt. The results demonstrate high potential for bending deformation, for use as a programmable adaptive façade panel. Compared against typical kinetic and static façade prototypes in an office space case study in Alexandria, Egypt, this double skin programmable material was shown to potentially improve performance in interior spaces in terms of light penetration and distribution without causing high levels of illumination or glare, while demonstrating low-cost and eco-friendly benefits for implementation as responsive façade prototypes.
