summary From the second year of the architecture course, a discipline is offered to introduce the BIM concept using an architectural modeling software. To optimize learning in the discipline and allow students to have a face-to-face period to discuss BIM theory, the use of Blended Learning was proposed - a learning method that combines face-to-face classroom interactivity in a physical space with digital media and online activities. For this purpose, video classes with BIM modeling tutorials were developed. The employed process proved to be efficient and may be an alternative to the conventional learning process in architecture.

summary This article aims at describing the creation process of an Augmented Reality (AR) application as a mean of expression: from production to exhibition. This study describes the development of an AR application presented at Expo SIGraDi 3D/20. A Moai miniature was scanned through digital photogrammetry techniques for acquisition of its shape and dimensions. The 3D model was generated and optimized to be viewed in AR. The process is replicable and provides an advance on documentation and development in AR applications based on digital photogrammetry.

summary Cinematic space is ephemeral and fleeting. After capture on film, the physical space of cinema is erased as lights are dimmed, props are dismantled, old sets torn down and new ones erected. For the understanding and research of historic cinematic space this is inherently limiting. Can computational tools aid this research and allow for digital reconstruction of film sets and scenes? This paper initiates a line of study into restitution methods of cinematic space. Assessment of software-based photogrammetry methods to cinematic sequences leads to the development of a bespoke parametric linear perspective reconstruction tool.

summary Traditionally, interactivity in architecture has been suppressed by its materiality. Building structures that can transform and change themselves have been the dream of many architects for centuries. With the continuous advancements in technology and the paradigm shift from mechanics to electronics, this dream is becoming reality. Today, it is possible to have building facades that can visually animate themselves, change their appearance, or even interact with their surroundings. In this paper, we introduce Architectural Chameleon Skin (ARCS), an installation that has the ability to transform static, motionless architectural surfaces into interactive and engaging skins. Swarm algorithms drive the interactivity and responsiveness of this “virtual skin”. In particular, the virtual skin responds to colour, movements, and distance of surrounding objects. We provide a comprehensive description and analysis of the ARCS installation.

title From Passive to Immersive: Metaverse as a Pedagogical Approach in History Class: Presenting a Constant Reminder of Historical Remnants and a Customizable Reality for Future Preferences; Beirut as a Case Study

summary It is widely acknowledged that passive, non-immersive strategies of teaching adopted in history classes in Lebanon do not offer the right platform for knowledge retention in students. With that said, virtual reality and the use of Metaverse as a pedagogical approach is prophesied as the most apt to invoke a positive attitude from children towards the topic being studied, and thus, in this case, it increases their awareness of the existing built heritage they live amidst. This research sets out from a recent project implemented by Beirut Arab University, together with three UN agencies. The latter aimed for “developing children emotional attachment to the territory of Beirut Blast through activating their participation in the construction of cognitive maps by playing with spatial maps strategically designed in a game environment”. A thorough assessment of the outcomes of the activities implemented throughout the project, including the executed physical models and game boards that simulate myriad neighborhoods in Beirut, is carried out, followed by an analytical comparison of these outcomes with those from using the proposed innovative digital tools. A pilot study is conducted on Martyr’s square to assess how virtual tools can enhance the sensory experience and perception of the built space, making youth active learners rather than passive. It illustrates how introducing children to educating architecture from a young age not only nurtures their awareness of their local neighborhoods, but also generates responsible citizens. The outcome of this study can be divided over a timeline of past, present, and future. The virtual recreation of old Beirut aims to enhance the virtual learning experience as opposed to that from books and chalkboards. Children are expected to formulate a better understanding of their heritage, become more attached to the remnants of the latter, and set out to customize the reality to their preferences or vision of how a better, sustainable Beirut looks like.

title Distance estimation technique from 360-degree images in built-in environments

summary The present study introduces a novel approach for quantifying distances within constructed environments. A mathematical model was developed for distance estimation in image processing using width and height estimation. In order to determine distance, the study employed the use of visual angle and sky view factor (SVF). Additionally, a camera with capabilities similar to the human eye was utilized to capture 360-degree photographs from a fixed position within a virtual reality corridor. The technique of Sky View Factor (SVF) is employed in indoor environments with ceilings by eliminating windows, doors, and roofs, thereby simulating a virtual sky. This enables the calculation of various parameters such as the image's area, area fraction, and aspect ratio through the utilization of image processing methods. Distance estimation can be predicted through the utilization of the sky view factor and visual angle, employing a linear regression analysis. The method of virtual sky view factor (VSVF) has potential applications in the fields of Engineering, robotics, and architecture for the estimation of indoor distances.

summary The trajectory of virtual reality for architecture is towards photo-realism. While this may be effective for some contexts, we propose that abstraction is more appropriate for the purposes of a historian interpreting drawings of unbuilt works of architecture. The case study we are using to explore this proposition is the Palazzo Littorio competition set in 1934 Rome. We present two prototype immersive virtual reality (iVR) applications developed in Unity for Oculus Rift: the first uses an etching aesthetic to produce a quasi-realistic site context and an interface that enables the comparative evaluation of competition entries from key viewing positions; the second application takes an even more abstract approach, where the aim is to immerse the historian within a 3D drawing, along with other historical material (drawings, photos, paintings, narrations of texts) and uses spatialized sound to evoke the ambience of the period.

summary The paper documents the development of algor thms (released as Grasshopper plugin Chingree) to generate 2D compositions and 3D embodiments inspired from the visual ethos of Mondrian's neo-plastic compositions. Based on the empirical analysis of the compositions; rectangles are sub-divided with lines parallel to x and y axes, folllowed by selection of few of the sub-divisions for colouring. The principles of sub-division and selection are applied in 3D. Volumes are sub-divided with planes parallel to xy, yz and zx planes. Few of the sub- divisions are selected to be present (analogous to colouring in 2D). Shape gr mmar is used to control sub-division.

summary The Arctic is a zone of confluent resources where climate change has begun disrupting the once stable ecological and transhumant lifestyles. Encroachment on pastureland by oil, gas and mining facilities limit reindeer herding activity, and the presence of such infrastructure continues to alter their sensory perceptions and consequently their capacity to read and navigate their environment. Parallel to this, thawing permafrost results in the release of gaseous methane, causing landforms called pingos to explode without detectable warning. This paper proposes a strategy for adapting to these rapid changes by implementing an autonomous system to balance the Arctic ecology through two mutual dependent interventions- (1) Regenerating the pingos to prevent explosion and create new pastoral lands. (2) Seasonally herding the reindeer to these new pastures. The project uses primary data, physical tests, and current technological tools to inform the discourse and suggest a derivative solution. Advanced computational tools like machine learning, robotics, and simulations are used to speculate upon the post-carbon Arctic ecology. The project performs through a strategy of local interventions, networking the living and non-living agents in a tight rope act that balances the Arctic ecology.

title Acting on the invisible: Computational tools and community action in the landscapes of air quality

summary This article proposes that designers and planners can better manage wicked problems by developing a strategic alignment of computational technology with a theory of change. Together with an understanding of the most effective places to intervene in a system, designers’ informed use of technology enables them to orchestrate community action and leverage large-scale environmental change. Aligning technology with a theory of change deepens the relevance of computational tools and suggests that technologies or tools that augment one’s ability to perceive, understand relevance, or prioritize raise the potential for action; technologies or tools that aggregate information on collective beliefs or actions help to build a community of concern; and technologies that elevate community capacity and create a sense of identity can contribute to the long-term transformation of values. Through a case study, this article demonstrates a nested approach to computation, which enhances public awareness and enables action in a small community which is trying to manage an extra-territorial problem of air quality. This article also proposes that while computational tools have extended the reach and effectiveness of advocacy, designers should continue to push for expanded application. By aggregating lessons learned from technological networks, such as the emerging clean air network described in this article, we can add another socio-ecological dimension to the practices of landscape and urbanism.

summary Professor Arturo Montagu passed away on 8th April, 2005, after a five-year long courageous battle against cancer. Arturo was one of the world's pioneers in architectural computing whose work and teaching influenced generations of professional and researchers, in Latin-America and beyond. It was through him that SIGraDi was created and that many of today's relationships among people in the rchitectural computing community got started and thrived. Despite his illness, he continued working unabatedly until the very end. In fact, few people ever noticed that he was sick. The sheer force of his intellectural activity for a long period of time in the 20th century – dense and valuable like few in architectural computing – and his invincible spirit hid the marks of his illness for a long time. This article summarizes Professor Montagu's contributions to the field of architectural computing and includes tributes from four people who knew him well but through very different circumstances.

summary This paper studies the computer in teaching drawings in architecture schools. To accomplish it differences are set between expression and representation drawings and three periods are analyzed from the perspective of historical evolution of representation drawing and relationship with architects. The first period is Renaissance and we focus on the appearance of the Perspective Method. The second is the VVIII century and the development of the Projective Method. The third is the XX century and the advent of graphic computation. The information technology in architecture course must be regarded as issue for the entire institution. We conclude that the challenge for Architecture Schools is to create ways of using computer in the architectural project process. This research show that the possibilities of teaching break away with the importance given to the projective drawing and setting the three dimensional environment as the starting point for the process of architectonic creation.

summary This paper presents experimental and simulated façade thermal and humidity performance assessments concerning three (3) types of widely used façade systems in the Dominican construction market: 8” block wall, ventilated façade & curtain wall. Using indoor and outdoor temperature (/1T) and humidity differences (/1H) as indicators in order to compare said performances between the systems and, in turn, with environmental simulations approximating them, we try to diagnose weaknesses and foresee improvement avenues for sustainable façade systems in the Dominican context. The data was obtained by on-site measurements using eight (8) temperature and relative humidity sensors in a twelve (12) storey building in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
