summary This paper presents the advancements of the Urbamedia project which was designed as part of a research program at the Center CAO (Creation computer assist), School of Architectural Design and Urbanism, University of Buenos Aires, which was led by the valued master and advisory professor Architect Arturo F. Montagu. This proposal of the city of Buenos Aires on the Mayo Avenue expands the original historical fragment presented between the following two referenced representative landmarks: The Two Congresses Square and the Mayo Square. It continues with the advancement of methodologies and techniques implemented in a system of “integrated visualization and communication” for the development of a VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) 3D virtual non-immersive and interactive vision. It also incorporates the development of a “foundation of digitally integrated knowledge” with fragments of central areas from other surrounding cities as well as interfaced phenomenological situations. The application of digital VRML technology has allowed for thoroughly researching the processes through dynamic simulation of specific urban fragments (Mayo Avenue within Buenos Aires) and the cities that are also participating in the project. summary This paper presents an investigation on the architectural, natural, and cultural resources in the southern part of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, according to their historical or environmental value, identifying natural and cultural elements known and valued by local communities, regardless their experts’ classification. Resources are identified by means of geographical information systems, combined with field information. The area comprises the coastal strip and the plains located in the last frontier of the Brazilian territory and the water system dominated by the lakes Patos, Mangueira and Mirim. The inventory of the environmental, sociocultural and economic heritage provides the necessary insight for issuing new development alternatives based on local resources. Research activities will include: the ellaboration of general and thematic maps, based on LANDSAT 5 [bands 3, 4 and 5] images; aerial photographs; DSG/SGE and municipal maps [scales 1:250.000, 1:50.000 and 1:25.000]; field work for the recognition of remarkable elements; interviews with residents for assessing their perception of local values; and community and institutional statements. These informations, comprising the elements valued by their architectural and urban quality, historical relevance and environmental significance, organised in a database, will provide contextual guidelines for the planning of a tourist route. This route, delineated by the preservation, recovery and use of representative local resources, valued as expressions of a native culture, evocates the initial occupation of the gaúcho territory, and may be touristically promoted as "The Gaúcho’s Way". The project also aims at showing the potential offered by GIS for identifying and evaluating specific spatial characteristics.

summary Digitally-generated visualizations, such as renders or movies, are, nowadays, commonly used as representation methods for architectural creations. This occurs not only in final stages of the process, with the goal of selling the product's image, but also in midst creation process to express concepts and ideas. Presently, the spread of parametric and algorithmic approaches to design creates a problem for visualization, as it enables the almost effortless change of 3D models, thus requiring repeated visualization efforts to keep up with the changes applied to the design. To solve this, we propose extending the algorithmic design approach to also include the high-level description of architectural image creation. The methodology, Algorithmic Architectural Visualization (AAV), also contemplates the required preparation settings for the visualization process, and includes possible visualization productions inspired by film techniques.

title Inside the Matrix: Immersive Live Coding for Architectural Design

summary Algorithmic Design (AD) uses computer programs to describe architectural models. These models are visual by nature and, thus, greatly benefit from immersive visualization. To allow architects to benefit from the advantages of Virtual Reality (VR) within an AD workflow, we propose a new design approach: Live Coding in Virtual Reality (LCVR). LCVR means that the architect programs the design while immersed in it, receiving immediate feedback on the changes applied to the program. In this paper, we discuss the benefits and impacts of such an approach, as well as the most pressing implementation issues, namely the projection of the programming environment onto VR, and the input mechanisms to change the program or parts of it. For each, we offer a critical analysis and comparison of the various solutions available in the context of two different programming paradigms: visual and textual.

summary The continual emergence of new informational and technological systems has impacted our cultural landscape. As society continues to evolve, we are becoming more connected to virtual systems that impact our spatial environment. The awareness and understanding of these invisible forces requires new curricular pedagogies in architectural education. This paper will document an ongoing course that was developed to research new methodologies for working with haptic environments and informational systems. Utilizing a high performance-computing center, students in the class are developing new adaptive intelligent spatial systems that engage a multiplicity of scales. They researched environments for PDA’s (Personal Data Assistance), I-Pods, cellular phones, GPS (Guidance Positioning Systems) and a new immersive virtual dome environment. The goal of the class was to reevaluate how architectural practice in the future will encompass a more holistic approach to both physical and virtual spatial development.

summary The creation of panoramic images for depicting urban landscape is a technique that has its origins in Antiquity. These images, which are known to represent large urban areas from multiple views, can be considered true works of art. Recently there has been a growing interest by some researchers, especially in the area of computer graphics, in the production of multi-perspective images for representing historic sites. However, the focus of these studies has been especially the computational aspects of this process, and there are few studies that address the impact and possibilities of these methodologies in historic preservation and urban planning. Realizing this shortcoming and considering the demand for a perspective more connected to cultural heritage, our proposal is to associate the excellent visual results of the multi-perspective images to the rich possibilities of computer simulation that can provide digital photography. The fact is that in recent years we have experienced technological innovations in the field of computer simulation that far exceeded our expectations. While most surveys of buildings are still based on the use of tape measure, pencil, paper and camera, the computer has become increasingly the main interface between the user and the information and is now the preferred instrument for the production and viewing of images, including the creation of virtual environments. Thus, this work seeks to explore the great potential which seems to exist in the combination of digital photography and the technique of multi-perspective image representation, which may provide new approaches and perspectives for the field of historic preservation. For that, we present a rapid and low cost methodology, developed in recent years, which generates orthophotos and metric multi-perspective images, useful for the analysis of built heritage and historic sites. In addition to that, we will also discuss further possible byproducts of this methodology, among which we could highlight the creation of three-dimensional models, and the analysis of building pathologies in combination with thermal photography. As a case study, we will present a representation of the Rua dos Caetés, a listed historic district in Belo Horizonte (MG), Brazil.

title Clamp links: A novel type of reciprocal frame connection

summary Reciprocal frames (RFs) are complex structural systems based on mutual support between elements. One of the main challenges for these structures is achieving geometrical complexity with ease for assembly. This paper describes the development of a new type of connection for RF that uses a single bolt to fix a whole fan. The method used was the Research Through Design, using algorithmic modelling and virtual and physical prototyping. After the exploration of different alternatives, the connection selected was structurally evaluated with a 3D solid finite element analysis (FEM) software and a 2D bar parametric model. Finally, a fullscale pavilion was built as a proof-of-concept. A total of 47 connections were fabricated using four 3D-printed templates combined with a hand router. The construction allowed us to draw conclusions on the connection design and the assembly method, and the process as a whole can contribute to the development of new structural links and production methods.

summary The optimization of resources in nature has stimulated the creation of strategies to facilitate the interchange of energy, matter and information. Observation of these natural phenomena allowed Fuller to develop the concept of Tensegrity Systems in the 50's, generating a growing integration of multidisciplinary views on this subject. In this paper Tensegrity is postulated, given its peculiar synergistic qualities, as a paradigmatic and emergent concept in the projectual disciplines, both as a type of system displaying reciprocal interactions between a given number of nodes, and as a structural system with potential applications in multiple, evolving, scientific-technological fields.

summary This paper is not just about the future of computerized design practice. It is about what to do today in contemplation of tomorrow-the issues of computercentered practice and the courses of action open to us can be discerned by the careful observer. The realities of computerized design practice are different from the issues on which design education still fixes its attention. To educators, the present paper recommends further clinical research on computerized design firms and suggests that case studies on the matter be developed and utilized as teaching material. Research conducted by the author of this paper indicates that a new form of design firm is emerging-the computerized design firm-totally supported and augmented by the new information technology. The present paper proceeds by introducing an abridged case study of an actual totally electronic, computerized design practice. Then, the paper concentrates on modelling the computerized design firm as an intelligent system, indicating non-trivial changes in its structure and strategy brought about by the introduction of the new information technology into its operations - among other considerations, different strategies and diverse conceptions of management and workgroup roles are highlighted. In particular, this paper points out that these structural and strategic changes reflect back on the technology of information with pressures to redirect present emphasis on the individual designer, working alone in an isolated workstation, to a more realistic conception of the designer as a member of an electronic workgroup. Finally, the paper underlines that this non-trivial conception demands that new hardware and software be developed to meet the needs of the electronic workgroup - which raises issues of human-machine interface. Further, it raises the key issues of how to represent and expose knowledge to users in intelligent information - sharing systems, designed to include not only good user interfaces for supporting problem-solving activities of individuals, but also good organizational interfaces for supporting the problem-solving activities of groups. The paper closes by charting promising directions for further research and with a few remarks about the computerized design firm's (near) future.

summary This paper presents an experience of collective digital fabrication and parametric modeling of furniture made with recycled plastic waste, inspired by natural elements of the Brazilian northeast. In addition to conventional joinery techniques, we highlight the technologies of rapid prototyping (PR) and digital fabrication (FD) (Volpato, 2007, Pupo, 2008; Pupo, 2009); as tools that promote a paradigm shift, both in the design process and in production and materialization (Kolarevic, 2005), allowing recycled plastic to have new applications. We started with a brief review of digital fabrication processes in Brazil, emphasizing collaboration in design and execution. Then, we contain the recycling of plastic and the need for actions for its best destination. Finally, we present a sustainable and collaborative design experience: the modeling and digital fabrication of furniture, entirely produced from recycled plastic, called “Banco Cabaça”.

summary This paper describes an instance of the author’s ongoing research in the field of Generative Design. The work is based on the premise that computer-aided design (CAD) should evolve beyond its current limitation of one-way interaction, and become a dynamic, intelligent, multi-user environment that encourages creativity and actively supports the evolution of individual, mass-customised designs which exhibit common features. The understanding of fundamental shape-forming processes in nature inspires us to move beyond the existing CAD paradigms and re-examine the way we can benefit from the computers in design. We can use this knowledge to create a new generation of computer-based design tools which use evolutionary search algorithms to generate create a common family of individual designs optimised according to particular criteria, while supporting our design intuition. The author explores this idea by illustrating a research project between the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Deakin University (Australia). The project implements a multi-user oriented design tool for evolutionary design, which was tailored to produce a simple object such as door handle. The paper first gives a short historical and philosophical to the work, then describes the technical and algorithmic requirements, and implementation of the system. It concludes by describing an experiment in which the system was used on a "live" test group of people to generate individual, mass-customised designs.

title Unicamp 2030: A plan for increasing a university campus in a sustainable way and an example of integrated use of CAAD simulation and computational design strategies

summary The state university of Campinas, Unicamp, is a public university in upstate São Paulo, Brazil, ranked the second best in the country. It was founded in 1966, and its main campus started to be built in 1967, in the suburbs of Campinas, nowadays a two-million people city. The area of the campus is almost 3 million square meters (300 hectares), with a total built area of 522.000 m2 and a population of 40 thousand people - 30 thousand students, 2 thousand faculty members and almost 8 thousand staff members. The campus’ gross population density is 133 people per hectare. Less than 6% of the total campus area is presently occupied. The design of Unicamp's campus is based on concepts that were typical of the modern movement, with reminiscences of corbusian urbanism, in which preference is given to cars and buildings are spread apart on the territory, with little concern to the circulation of pedestrians. The standard building type that has been built on campus since the 1970's is based on non-recyclable materials, and has a poor thermal performance. Unicamp is expected to double its number of students by the year 2030. The campus density is thus expected to grow from 600 people per hectare to almost 1,000 people per hectare. The need to construct new buildings is seen as an opportunity to correct certain characteristics of the campus that are now seen as mistakes, according to sustainability principles. This paper describes a set of proposals targeting the increase of the campus' density in a sustainable way. The plan also aims at increasing the quality of life on campus and diminishing its impact on the environment. The main targets are: - Reducing the average temperature by 2oC; - Reducing the average displacement time by 15 minutes; - Increasing the campus' density by 100%; - Reducing the CO2 emissions by 50%. // In order to achieve these goals, the following actions have been proposed: Developing a new standard building for the university, incorporating sustainability issues, such as the use of renewable and/or recyclable materials, the installation of rainwater storage tanks, the use of natural ventilation for cooling, sitting the buildings in such a way to decrease thermal gain, and other issues that are required for sustainable buildings' international certifications. To assess the performance of the new standard building, different simulation software were used, such as CFD for checking ventilation, light simulation software to assess energy consumption, and so on. 1. Filling up under-utilized urban areas in the campus with new buildings, to make better use of unused infrastructure and decrease the distance between buildings. 2. Proposing new bicycle paths in and outside campus, and proposing changes in the existing bicycle path to improve its safety. 3. Developing a landscape design plan that aims at creating shaded pedestrian and bicycle passageways.

summary Since 1985 the Computer-Aided Architectural Design Futures Foundation has fostered high level discussions about the search for excellence in the built environment through the use of new technologies with an exploratory and critical perspective. In 2015, the 16th CAAD Futures Conference was held, for the first time, in South America, in the lively megalopolis of Sao Paulo, Brazil. In order to establish a connection to local issues, the theme of the conference was "The next city". The city of Sao Paulo was torn down and almost completely rebuilt twice, from the mid 1800s to the mid 1900s, evolving from a city built in rammed-earth to a city built in bricks and then from a city built in bricks to a city built in concrete. In the 21st century, with the widespread use of digital technologies both in the design and production of buildings, cities are changing even faster, in terms of layout, materials, shapes, textures, production methods and, above all, in terms of the information that is now embedded in built systems.Among the 200 abstracts received in the first phase, 64 were selected for presentation in the conference and publication in the Electronic Proceedings, either as long or short papers, after 3 tough evaluation stages. Each paper was reviewed by at least three different experts from an international committee of more than 80 highly experienced researchers. The authors come from 23 different countries. Among all papers, 10 come from Latin-American institutions, which have been usually under-represented in CAAD Futures. The 33 highest rated long papers are also being published in a printed book by Springer. For this reason, only their abstracts were included in this Electronic Proceedings, at the end of each chapter.The papers in this book have been organized under the following topics: (1) modeling, analyzing and simulating the city, (2) sustainability and performance of the built environment, (3) automated and parametric design, (4) building information modeling (BIM), (5) fabrication and materiality, and (6) shape studies. The first topic includes papers describing different uses of computation applied to the study of the urban environment. The second one represents one of the most important current issues in the study and design of the built environment. The third topic, automated and parametric design, is an established field of research that is finally becoming more available to practitioners. Fabrication has been a hot topic in CAAD conferences, and is becoming ever more popular. This new way of making design and buildings will soon start affecting the way cities look like. Finally, shape studies are an established and respected field in design computing that is traditionally discussed in CAAD conferences.

summary Museums exhibit a growing development in the world, promoting buildings with significant expressions. Nevertheless, the relation of the building and its environmental performance is fundamental in the conception of new buildings. The problem originates in the early stages of design, where it is not possible to evaluate it environmentally. The methodology uses three art museum buildings in the humid subtropical climate of Brazil, whose geometries are completely different. After analyzing and relating its performance to its environmental and geometric characteristics a parametric modeling tool is proposed and the digital manufacture as a product of the process has been carried out.

summary Methods are described for forming finite element matrices for a wide variety of operators on tetrahedral finite elements, in a manner similar to that previously employed for line segments and triangles. This technique models the differentiation and product-embedding operators as rectangular matrices, and produces finite element matrices by replacing all required analytic operations by their finite matrix analogues. The method is illustrated by deriving the conventional matrix representation for Laplace's equation. Brief computer programs are given, which generate universal finite element matrices for use in various applications

summary CumInCAD is a cumulative index of publications related to 'Computer Aided Architectural Design' (CAAD). It includes bibliographic data of approximately 12K records, which were predominantly derived from CAAD-related conferences, such as ACADIA, ASCAAD, CAADRIA, eCAADe, SiGraDi and CAAD futures. A brief historical overview of almost two decades of collaboration between the University of Ljubljana and the above-mentioned CAAD-associations is provided. After years of successful operation the previous interface became gradually outdated, which called for new developments to assure continuous support to open access to scientific knowledge. In this contribution, we explain the existing status of the systems, its use, and the transition process to a cloud deployment.
