title Parametric Variations of Palladio's Villa Rotonda

summary A computational tool for the study of proportional balance is introduced as an apparatus for investigating Andrea Palladio's design of Villa Almerico, more familiarly known as Villa Rotonda, in the second book of his Quattro Libri dell'Architettura. The objective of this investigation of Villa Rotonda is to find a novel outcome from the morphological transformations of the villa, where the transformations are generated from parametric variations of the villa while maximizing its proportional balance. The outcome confirms Palladio's mastery of proportional treatments of his design of Villa Rotonda and shows various morphological descendants evolved from the original design. It suggests a new way of employing a parametric geometry in the formal study of a classical building and its stylistic evolution.

summary In Hawaii, ‚"TheBus‚" has been a main transportation system since 1971. Considering the high cost of living in Hawaii and the absence of a rail system, the use of ‚"TheBus‚" has been an instrumental vein of the city life in Honolulu with rhythmical pauses at about 4,000 bus stops in Honolulu. However, existing undifferentiated bus stops are developed from a cost effective mass production system so that they have been problematic for satisfying specific needs from various site conditions. In this research, an integrated computational method of mass-customization for designing 4,000 bus stops is introduced. According to various site conditions, the design of each bus stop is customized. Unlike the mass‚Äêproduced bus stops commonly seen in cities today, the proposed computational method in this paper produces bus stop design outcomes that fit into the physical characteristics of the location in which they are installed. Mass-customization allows for the creation and production of unique or similar buildings and building components, differentiated through digitally‚Äêcontrolled variation (Kolarevic, 2003). The employment of a computational mass‚Äêcustomization in architectural design extends the boundary of design solutions to the satisfaction of multi-objective requirements and unlimited freedom to search alternative solutions (Duarte, 2001; Caldas, 2006). The computational method developed in this paper consists of 1) definition of a prototype, 2) parametric variation, 3) manual deformation, and 4) simulation based deformation. The definition of a prototype is the development of a basic design to be transformed for satisfying various conditions given from a site. In this paper, the bus stop prototype is developed from the analysis of more than 300 bus stops and the categorization of the existing bus stops according to their physical conditions, contextual conditions, climatic conditions, and existing amenities. Based upon the outcome of the analysis, the design variables of a bus stop prototype are defined. Those design variables then guide the basic physical parameters for changing the physical configuration of the prototype according to a given site. From this, many possible design outcomes are generated as instances for further developments. The process of manual deformation is where the designer employs its intuition to develop the selected parametric variation. The designer is compelled to think about the possible implication derived from formal variation. This optional process allows every design decision to have a creative solution from an individual designer with an incidental quality in aesthetics, but substantiated functional quality. Finally the deformation of the selection is guided and controlled by the influence of sun direction/ exposure to the selection. The simulation based deformation starts with the movement of the sun as the trigger for generating the variations of the bus stop prototype. The implementation of the computational method was made within the combination of MEL (Maya Enbedded Language), autodesk MAYA and Ecotect environment.

summary Shape grammars are employed for analyzing and delineating the formal structure of Mondrian's painting. The proportionality (dynamic equilibrium or commensurability) embedded in the structure of the artifact is optimized with Genetic Algorithms. The optimization process introduced in this paper allows a user's intervention to provide a guided search for finding stylistic reproductions of the original. Two types of the stylistic reproductions are conducted: 1) generating formal descendants of the original, and 2) tuning the original structure. The implementation of the reproductions is described also.

summary We describe a domain-specific design tool capable of creating and fabricating complicated curvilinear patterns within the early stages of the design. This tool entitled “[SIN]uous” is a parametric design application that allows both the customization and fabrication of dynamic patterns created by the combination of SINE and COSINE functions. This tool allows designers and architects to design curvilinear patterns and manufacture schematic physical models of them in a short period of time, using rapid prototyping equipment such as a laser cutter. This tool consists of several modules, including a pattern maker, a fabricator, and a 3-D simulator. Using this tool, patterns are generated by manipulating variable parameters and fabricated according to the assembly sequence easily and quickly through algorithms by locating nodes of intersections. The end result is an exported computer file compatible with laser cutting technology. We expect that this design tool will facilitate the transition between the virtual and the physical, thus resulting in a better design product.

summary A generative description of Mies van der Rohe's courthouse language is presented in the form of a shape grammar. The grounding of the work is based on a set of 135 sketches produced by the office of Mies during the design process of the Everett McKinley Dirksen United States Courthouse in Chicago, and documented in the Mies van der Rohe Archive at the Museum of Modern Art. The work here postulates a set of 39 unique courthouse designs all showcasing distinct variations of the courtroom type in the Miesian language and re-casts them in two-dimensional diagrams to make their differences and similarities transparent. A series of spatial relations between five types of spaces are extracted, including courtrooms, circulation networks, vertical cores, office spaces, and support spaces, and are deployed to specify the shape rules of the grammar. A set of conventions to specify how the two-dimensional diagrams represent three-dimensional models is briefly outlined to prepare the ground for the implementation of the grammar in a three-dimensional shape grammar interpreter.

The application of the strategies described here may reduce human efforts in complicated process of re-arranging components according to new layout design and help to increase the reuse of module components in practice.

summary Energy performance modelling can provide insights into the efficiency and sustainability of commercial buildings, and also the achievement of certification standards such as USGBC LEED. However, the results from the modelling must be validated via a post-construction evaluation, which quantifies any discrepancies between the predicted energy usage and the actual energy consumed. In this study, an existing office building was examined to test how well the model predicts energy usage. The results from the model were compared with the actual usage of gas and electricity over two years (2010-2011). Our study showed a 123% higher gas usage,and a 36% lower electricity, compared with the simulation. This difference presents that occupant behaviour and building construction practices have significant impact on the energy usage of a building. For instance, the large discrepancy among gas usage is due to the office building’s thermal envelope, which identifies the spots at which heat leaks out of the building, thereby forcing the heating unit to work more. Additionally, the post occupancy evaluation study identified that indoor environmental conditions impact on energy consumption of the building.

summary Our research focuses on bio-inspired evolutionary design based on genetic algorithms to explore façade surfacesthat improve adaptivity and solar performance of stadium design during the early stages of design development. This paper describes prototype implementation of an automated computer design system, its architecture, and initial results. Our approach highlights importance of early exploration of architectural geometries by rapidly narrowing down optimised design solutions within an infinite search space of possible design solutions. Additionally, the prototype supports automatic generation of design variations and demonstrates potential use of genetic algorithms as a means to constrained design exploration.

The tool will enable them to communicate in the same language, articulate criteria and priorities in multiple perspectives, and to share rapidly simulated evaluations of schematic design variations. Among many barriers that block collaborations among professionals, a quintessential barrier in the building and design industries may be epistemological rather than physical. The professionally different ways of thinking, expertise, values, and priorities can be a block on the collaborative development process of architectural design projects. This paper takes the example of the relationship between developers and architects, who tend to have different evaluation criteria. A real-time value simulation tool is introduced as a means to generate possible building typologies on a given project site, with computation of expected total values expressed in simple financial terms.

A BIM-based tool, A Thousand BIM, is introduced as a means to quickly generate possible building typologies on a given project site, with computation of expected total values expressed in simple financial terms. Its aim is to help a group of heterogeneous professionals to communicate in the same language, articulate criteria and priorities in multiple perspectives, and share rapidly simulated evaluations of schematic design variations. The implemented evaluation process considers construction cost per square foot, land value, and sustainability as well as other soft design values such as views and accessibility. It can take various market data as inputs to cost calculation, and the weight to each of the design values is dynamically adjustable. A professional can explicitly set them, and share the criteria, priorities, and results of value simulations with others in an enhanced collaborative process.

In this paper, development of new collective housing was explored to enable flexible and efficient communication and sharing by utilizing branch structure through Constructal theory on efficient flow in system. title Parametric Design Process of a Complex Building In Practice Using Programmed Code As Master Model

summary Parameter based design explorations inevitably require a unified master model that represents the current design state, where each parameter being explored is essentially a critical sub-case of this master model. Throughout the constantly changing design state, it is beneficial to maintain a master model that is flexible and adaptive. This paper describes the design process of a complex building whose master model documented the design logic through implementation of software code. This process is illustrated by the case study of Lotte Super Tower (Seoul, Korea) from the beginning of schematic design to end of construction document phase. By maintaining the master model as a platform-free software code, in contrast to platform-dependent methods, the case study illuminates the advantages of documenting the generative logic behind design variations in a way that allows greater flexibility and a higher level of alignment with design intent.

summary The paper will examine the sites of imaginal or creative 'events' set within the discourse of architecture and landscape design. It will discuss the cognitive and reflective actions implicit in creating or opening up the spaces of thinking in design. Notions of 'linearity' and 'intuition' in the emergence of discursive design work will be tested with reference to the textual work of Barthes, Foucault and Baudrillard, and to the imaginal work of Lebbeus Woods, Piranesi and Daniel Liebeskind. The potential for relocating terms and collapsing conventional disciplinary boundaries to discover a creative field of discourse within architectural design will be discussed, together with the specific tactics and strategies which may be employed by the designer to achieve such a collision in the problematizing of a design project. Ideas of reality, simulation and materiality will be discussed in the context of the designer's external frames of reference (societal, ecological, political, aesthetic, cultural) and their possible relationship with the cognitive process in order to discover the terms under which an architectural discourse seeks validation.

summary Despite recent developments in computer-aided design in architecture, both in terms of form generation techniques and performance-based design tools, there still appears to be polarization between the ‘visual’ and the ‘technical’ elements of design. Two causes of this are discussed: long-standing tradition within the discipline and perception of design as primarily a visual exercise. Structural layout optimization is a technique which enables automatic identification of optimal arrangements of structural elements in frames. As the technique appears to have the potential to help reduce the polarization between the visual and the technical elements of design, it can be considered as an ‘integrative’ form generation tool. Applications of the technique are considered via three design examples, demonstrating both its potential and areas where refinement is required before it is suitable for application in practice.

summary In this paper we present an approach to the qualitative representation of shape and its use. We use a qualitative coding scheme founded on landmarks in the shape. The scheme encodes a qualitative representation of angles, relative side lengths and curvatures at landmarks. We then show how such a representation can be used as a basis for reasoning about shapes using extracted shape features. We conclude with a preliminary analysis of 12 sketches of the architect Louis Kahn and show how they may be categorised based on these shape features.

summary This paper aims to define the syntax of KBimCode Lan- guage as a domain-specific computer language to represent Korea Building Act sentences. KBimCode Language represents building permit requirements in Korea Building Act as explicit computable rules. KBimCode aims to accomplish the neutral and standardized way of rule-making in an easy-to-use syntax. This paper introduces the approach of language design and definition. The main concerns handled in the paper are: 1) features of building permit-related regula- tions in Korea Building Act are reflected in the strategy for the lexical and syntactic design of KBimCode Language; 2) specification of KBimCode based on the context-free EBNF notation is introduced; and evaluation of the language definition is performed. KBimCode is an ongoing project. Together with newly developed rule checking ap- plications, KBimCode will establish automated design quality assess- ment system in Korea.
